Goals for 2011.....Halfway Point Check-Up
Every January on my blog, I post a list of Hopes or Goals for my year. HERE's the post from earlier this year where I talked about what I hoped to accomplish in 2011.
Since we are halfway through the year......let me say that again.....halfway through the year!......I thought it would be a predictable time to check-in and see how I'm doing or how I'm NOT doing at this point in 2011.
1. Put more Money Into Savings.
PASS-We are slightly ahead of our Savings Goal at the halfway point from 2010. I only upped my Savings Goal 2 thousand dollars in 2011 since food costs have been rising this year and with another teen starting college in August, we have more expenses to cover. We are on track as of now to meet our savings goal. 8-)
2. File all the Paperwork that needs filing and completing it on time.
PASS-We got all the college and income tax paperwork completed with time to spare earlier this year. I also tackled a huge pile of papers that needed filing in May(was it?) Going forward I am going to try to file every 2 months so the pile doesn't get too unruly.
3. Declutter my entire house and garage, and storage unit(and then stop renting the storage unit).
PASS(so far)-This goal is ongoing throughout 2011. I had the storage unit down to half-empty. Then I had to temporarily put a large load of boxes from the garage into the unit so I could stage for a garage sale this month. Besides just the moving of crap around in this way, I have decluttered at least 6 loads(off hand I think it's 6, I might be wrong) so far from the house and unit. After the garage sale is over, more loads will begin leaving again for Sallie's.
This Goal is my largest, ongoing, physically challenging one for 2011. It may just kill me by December. ;-)
4. Read 30 books this year, with 75% of them being non-fiction.
FAIL-I am STILL on Book #6(this one is a 'difficult' read) plus I pitched Book #5 before finishing it because it was just horrible! So technically I am on Book #5 with 25 more to go.
bleh.
I am just not feeling much like reading yet. Maybe next month when the weather turns beastly hot I'll want to do nothing but sit still and read in the a/c.
5. Finish ALL in progress sewing projects and alter ALL clothing that needs it or give it away.
FAIL-I hemmed some pants and worked on some PJ pants for my Daughter but haven't finished them. Hubs bought 4 pairs of pants for me to hem so the pile has gone UP not DOWN.
bleh. bleh. bleh.
I just can't seem to get into a sewing zone. This is worrying me. People are going to start thinking I really can't sew.lol
6. Cook more foods from scratch and phase unhealthy options out of my stockpile.
PASS-I was doing very well on this earlier this year. I was cooking much more from scratch and we were down to a small number of cans of soda(of which I was only drinking 1 can per week if that)and I only had 2 tv dinners in the freezer.....no frozen pizzas, no 'snack' foods like Pop-Tarts or Toaster Pocket thingies, Froot snacks, only a few Helper type mixes. Ok, I still had a ton of cake mixes and breaded chicken products.lol Then school ended and I caved and bought some pizza rolls, pizzas, chicken strips, ice cream and more soda for #2 son. The kid has to eat lunch, right?lol And unless I want to spend ALL DAY cooking this summer, I'm giving him easy things to make for lunch(rather than spend a fortune buying Taco Bell and Baconators at Wendy's)and I'll give him healthy foods for dinner. It's the compromise I'll make to get through until school starts again.
And I promise I shall NEVER buy Pop-Tarts again....Nasty!
7. Grow more of the food we eat or source our food from non-grocery chain stores.
FAIL(so far)-With the wacky weather and being super busy in May/June with the impending Graduation and all that entailed I was sooo not 'into' my garden this year. We did get it planted but not everything I wanted. I don't feel we will have as much to eat from our garden this year as we did last year. As for sourcing from non-grocery chain stores, we are just getting into the season where we can buy from the local farms. I am determined to get to the farm stands this summer and put up produce for 2012. I am still looking for a local source for meats. The closest is over an hour's ride away so not very economical.
8. Use my skills to step up what I do for Others.
NEUTRAL-Ok, I can't say Pass or Fail on this one. OTOH, I have done on par with last year in terms of family and food bank donations so far this year. As soon as the garage sale is done I have another donation to take to the food bank. But since I have not been 'extreme couponing' this year(due to the lack of deals locally, not traveling where the deals are because of the price of gas and wear and tear on the minivan AND the lack of good value coupons this year, due to the tightening up on coupons by manufacturer's in part because of "That Couponing Show Which Shall Not Be Named")I haven't had as much to donate as in past years. It will take me MORE money in 2011 to donate the same amount of food as I did in 2010. I just don't know if I can come up with enough money this year to put toward this goal to "step up" what I give.
I may have to look at other ways besides monetary/food donations to do for others.
9. Be more "in the Moment" for my Family.
PASS-I feel that, so far in 2011, I have been more 'there' for the family. I have tried to limit my time on the internet by blogging less(ok, not MUCH less!lol), and spending less time deal hunting.
See?....crappy coupons and local deals give me more time to be with family, so there is one good thing about the dirth of deals!lol With less of a stockpile I spend less time organizing it.
Of course, the teens don't actually want to spend time with me when they are home, unless I have cooking them food or handing over cash....oh, the blessings of having sullen, eye-rolling teens! ;-)
Now that #2 son is home from camp, I'll be offering to drive him places and do some things for him so he can hang out with people that aren't his family.
10. Organize the running of my Home.
How to score this one?.....
I guess I'm on my way to a PASS with this one. With 2 less kids home things are running fairly smoothly. With less clutter in the way, it's easier to keep what is here organized and clean. But with so many projects pending or in progress(garage sale, cleaning out the storage unit, sewing, home repairs/remodeling)it seems like everything is at 6's and 7's and just a moment away from flying off the tracks. Since the older 2 kids don't have a car while working across the state this summer(due to the car wreck in May), I'm having to deal with business stuff for them like driver's license renewals, dr. appointments, prescription refills, college papers/forms, scholarship forms/requirement, ordering books and tuition bills. This is stuff they should/would be taking care of but since they don't have transportation or bank/credit card access it's all falling on me. I haven't screwed anything up yet, knock on wood.lol
So how about you?
How are your goals for 2011 panning out?
Are you on track to accomplish what you want to this year?
Have your goals changed significantly since the beginning of 2011?

Using Up the +Ups on Saturday
Here's how I used my $10 in +Up Rewards....
2 bags of Doritos
2 teeny tiny boxes of Whitman's Sampler chocies
1 teeny tiny box of suger-free Whitman's Sampler chocies
1 pack of sheet protectors
1 Cella cherry
$11.18
I used a $1 Wellness AdPerk/VV IPQ and those $10 in +Up Rewards and put the .18¢ on my Rite-Aid gift card.
I received $4 in +Ups(3 x $1 for the chocies, 1 x $1 for the Doritos).
Analysis....
*Doritos=teen boy snacks + it gave a $1 +Up so I rolled something
*teeny tiny choccies=stocking stuffers + it gave a $1 +Up each
*sheet protectors=son needed for marching band camp + it was a good price for this item
*cherry=filler so I could use my last +Up Reward-the sugar free box of chocies was .08¢ less than the regular so my total was less than I had calculated.
I have $16 in +Ups to use this week. I don't see many item to roll them with that I can use so it might be another week of burning them. At this rate I will be out of +Up Rewards in a couple of weeks.
It might be a good thing to be out and take some weeks off from my Rite-Aid adventures. 8-)

Quick Trip to Price Chopper for Coupon Doublers and Edy's Catalina Deal
After getting a gold star this morning at the dentist.....8-))....I made a dash down to Price Chopper to roll my $5 Catalina Q from 2 weeks ago for buying all that Dove Men's Soap.
PC had 3 Coupon Doubler Qs in the ad here on Sunday and there is an Edy's Ice Cream Catalina Deal(Spend $12/Get $4 Cat Q)so I pulled a few Qs and went deal hunting.
4 x Texas Toast Croutons BOGO sale($2.29)=$4.58
2 x Edy's Fruit Bars on sale $3=$6.00
2 x Edy's Ice Cream on sale $3=$6.00
2 x Heluva Good Cheese on sale $2=$4.00
2 x Bic Comfort 3 Razors on sale $2.99=$5.98
SubTotal.....$26.56
Coupons Used
2 x $1/2 Texas Toast Croutons ManuQ(used 2 Doubler Qs)=$4.00
2 x $1/1 Edy's Fruit Bars IPQ=$2.00
1 x $1/2 Heluva Good items ManuQ(used 1 Doubler Q)=$2.00
2 x $3/1 Bic Comfort 3 Razor ManuQ(price modified down to $2.99 each)=$5.98
1 x $5 OYNO Cat Q=$5.00
Coupon Total.....$18.98
$26.56-$18.98=$7.58+.06¢tax=$7.64 OOP
And my Edy's Catalina didn't print!
Went to the counter and seems nobody's Cat for this is printing at this store, so the CSM gave me $4 cash instead.
Deduct that $4 and my OOP today was $3.64.
$37.68 worth of items gives me a savings rate of 90.34%.
Analysis.....
* The cheese was $1 a block after Qs.
* The croutons were 14&1/5 cents a bag after Qs.
* The razors were free.
* What's left OOP is $1.00(plus 6 cents for tax)for 4 containers of ice cream/popsicles which breaks down to 25 cents for each container.
* In a way I'm glad I got cash today instead of a Catalina Q to roll. I don't go to PC much in the summer so now I don't have a Cat that has to be used in 2 weeks hanging over my head.
This brings my food spending for July up to $78.37. Half the month is over and we have $171.63 left in the budget.
How is your food spending, or NOT spending going so far in July?
Any great deals you had to have so far this month?
Or are you trying to eat down your pantry?

Say Hello to My Little Friend!
Let me introduce my new, close, personal friend........
He may be very one dimensional but we enjoy each other's company.lol
The downside is that Uncle Sam will want a cut of my new buddy here, come next April. 8-(
I brought Mr. Franklin home on Monday night. He was my "thank you" for participating in a Focus Group/Mock Jury session held at a local hotel. We also got some "parting gifts" as Monty Hall use to say but this was the incentive to get me to leave my house, drive 5 miles down the mountain and give my opinion on a case.
The company I am registered with is turning out to be a good gig for me. It took a year or so to get things rolling but this is the 3rd group event I've been selected for(2 have been online/1 in-person)since last Fall. They also send emailed surveys but I seem to get dumped out of them before I get to the end so I only have $2 or so in my account for those so far. It will be sometime before I can request a $20 check on that.lol
If you'd like to sign up with Focus Forward, I'd appreciate if you'd use my link HERE.
They are a nationwide LCC corporation. Signing up is free and you will never be asked to pay for anything in order to participate in a group. I highly recommend them.
Another company Hubs is involved with is Pinecone Research. They send out online survey invites on average of 2-3 a month. Each completed survey is worth $3 and you can have a paper check sent or request payment through a Paypal account. Last year Hubs did 20 surveys so made $60. Of course, Uncle Same also got a cut of that since it IS income. You won't get rich participating but $60 is a utility bill or a week's worth of groceries, right?
Pinecone doesn't recruit or do referrals. You have to wait until they have openings and go sign up. They will advertise openings on various website via banners but there are no set sites or times so it's a matter of keeping your eyes open online and if you hear from some's blog or website that Pinecone Research is taking applications, you need to jump on it.
Hubs didn't get invited right away when he applied. He had to wait until his demographic fit the profile they were recruiting from so if you don't get in right away, keep trying.
And there is good news on the TOLUNA front as well. TOLUNA is an online survey company I signed up at the behest of my bloggy buddy SonyaAnn. If these 2 survey's incentive points every come through from 2 Pending studies I did, I may just actually have enough points to request a $20 check...woohooo!

First on BIL's card....
2 x SoftSoap Body Wash on sale=$5.98
1 x Balsamic Vinegar on sale=$1.00
1 x Luster Toothpaste w/20% Wellness discount=$5.99
1 x Crest Toothpaste on sale=$2.69

I received $6 in +Ups back(2 x $1 chocolate, 2 x $2 SoftSoap).
I also qualified for SCR #6($2.69 Crest) and #84($4 Luster) so I'll receive $6.69 in cash rebates next month.
*Sheila over at Super Savvy Saver reminded me about the teeny tiny Russell Stover and Whitman's Sampler boxes are giving $1 +Up Rewards this month. With 20% Wellness discount they only 'cost' you .27¢ and you can roll $1 per box in +Ups. I was able to find a couple. While 4 pieces of chocie are NOT a great deal for this price, I am putting my boxes into the Xmas stash for stocking stuffers.
*On Wednesday, when I got to the store, the SoftSoap shelves were bare. However, there is a Men's variety of this product now and my store had it shelved separately from all the other varieties of SoftSoap Body Wash so there were still 2 bottles left for me to buy....yippee!
I would seriously advise you to GET A RAINCHECK for this item if your store is out. $.99 for a bottle which will be your raincheck price is a great deal AND you have the possibility of Dial releasing a SoftSoap ManuQ in the future, which pared with this raincheck could make for some very frugal or even free body wash! ;-) A Raincheck for the CREST toothpaste is also a given, since your raincheck will make it free.
Then I bought on my card.....

I also qualified for SCR #6($2.69 Crest) and #84($4 Luster) so I'll receive $6.69 in cash rebates next month in my account.
* If your store has the Fruit in the Middle variety of Mini-Wheats and you got the Vocalpoint mailer Qs, this is a great way to use them if you still haven't yet. 2 boxes of cereal are $5. Use the BOGO Q and one of the $1/1 Qs PLUS the $1/2 Rite-Aid AdPerk/VV Q(these can be stacked with manuQs for additional savings)and now your cereal cost you .25¢ a box!
* I also lost $2 in +Ups from my stash. They expired on Tuesday. I forgot they were expiring then and not on Saturday....ugh.

1 x $1/1 Mini-Wheats Homemailer Q(Vocalpoint)=$1.00
1 x $1/2 assorted cereals including Mini-Wheats AdPerks/VV Q=$1.00
1 x $1.50/1 Luster Toothpaste IPQ(there is also a ManuQ from the inserts out there)=$1.50
Coupon Total....$9.00
$16.22-$9.00=$7.22
I used $7 in +Up Rewards and put the .22¢ on my gift card.
I received $2 in +Ups back for the 2 Russell Stover sample boxes.
I still have $10 in +Ups to use up by Saturday so I foresee another trip to Rite-Aid in my not too distant future.lol

Food Spending from Saturday.....and Eating on Sunday
I went to use my $10 Catalina Q at Weis Markets last Saturday.
They had an unadvertised special on Hillshire Farms Smoke Sausage for $1.99 lb, so I picked up 2 as this is my "buy price" for kielbasa/smoke sausage.
I also found a $3.53 priced piece of steak with a $2 instant discount sticker on it, so $1.53 for just under a lb. of steak. This will go into the freezer to use in chili, beef stroganoff or something else at a later date.
The main item was the hunk of ribs I picked up. They were $1.79 a lb. and I got a 5.04lb. hunk that cost $9.02 total. $1.79 was the best per lb. price around here.
My bill total was $14.53 but after the $10 CatQ I paid $4.53 OOP. Not a bad price for almost 12 lbs. of meat. ;-)
That's an 81.18% savings rate.
Since the ribs were 'previously frozen' I used them on Sunday.
We fired up the smoker. Here is my baby......I call her "Precious"......yes, she is the "one ring that will feed us all".....
After 4 hours "low and slow" with an applewood chips smoking, here is what the ribs looked like....
And after another 3 hours in the smoker, I sauced them up and glazed them up for 20 minutes in the oven and ended up with this....
Not quite fall off the bone but with a pink smoke ring clear to the bone. Just enough char on the outside but tender and moist inside.
Look good enough to eat, don't they? 8-)
There is one serving left and Hubs has put 'dibs' on them for tonight's Leftovers Night.
I am liking my Precious this summer. It's one way to cut down on electricity use and generating heat in the kitchen in this hot weather. And it turns out scrumptious meats! ;-)
Now I have to find me a beef brisket that isn't corned to fill my smoker.....
So do you like real barbecue? Are you a dry smoked meat lover or do you like em sauced?
What's your favorite barbecued meat?

Using up the +Ups on Saturday
I had $11.50 in +Up Rewards on Saturday to spend or lose, so here is the junk I bought.
And trust me, most of this IS junk for Hubs and #2 son.....
2 x Planters dry roasted peanuts BOGO sale=$5.29
2 x Flavor-ice frozen sticks on sale .99¢=$1.98
2 x Reese's PB cups on sale .50¢=$1.00
1 x 5 Gum 3 pack on sale=$2.50
1 x RA cookies on sale but wellness discount was lower=$1.91
SubTotal.....$12.68
Coupons Used
1 x .50¢/2 Reeses PB cups AdPerk/VV IPQ=$.50
Coupon Total....$.50 *how pitiful is THAT!lol
$12.68-$.50=$12.18
I used my $11.50 in +Up Rewards and put the remaining .68¢ on my trusty Rite-Aid gift card so Zero OOP.
I earned ZERO +Up Rewards for this transaction and I got no Customer Survey though I did get one earlier in the week plus a Pharmacy Survey when I got my prescription filled.
A Note***It looks like RA pulled the AMP AdPerk/VV video and coupon off the website. I guess the problem I had when I tried to use it was nationwide so they yanked it instead of having to deal with fixing/adjusting it.
This week, I have $35+ in +Ups to use by this coming Saturday. We didn't get the Noxzema Qs here(of course!lol) and there is little I can see to buy to roll my +Ups besides the Compound W. I really don't want to buy it since we have no use for it....sigh. So basically unless something materializes this week, I'll be burning through a boatload of +Ups this week.
It looks like my big stash of +Up Rewards will be dwindling down to nothing soon. In a way it's a relief not to have to figure out how to roll/use them for awhile. Maybe I need a break from Rite-Aid for a month or so.....
Since I won't get a summer vacation I'll aim to take a Rite-Aid vacation instead.lol
So what is everyone else buying at Rite-Aid this week?
Come of people, inspire me! ;-)

This Year's Garden...1st Update
I know I haven't blogged much(if any!)about our garden this year.
I don't know....I guess I am just not much 'into' the garden this year.
Here's a shot of the side bed from April 30th when we were just getting to cleaning out the beds and prepping the soil....
Usually we have nothing to harvest until mid July at the earliest because of our climate/zone.
Well, the 2 weeks of unseasonably HOT weather in early June sped up the rate of germination and growth a LOT!
We've been picking radishes for weeks!
I've got them coming out of my ears at this point.lol
And here is a shot of the same side bed taken two weeks ago....
A few tomato plants, some squashy/cuke type plants(I don't even remember what kinds....see what I mean about I'm not into it this year!lol) and a few bean plants.
We are having a devil of a time getting the bean plants to grow. We've planted different kinds(bush and vine type)in all the different bed locations with little success. Hubs sewed some into the wooden barrels also and those were doing great!
Until a critter found them and had a munchfest. bleh
Hubs thinks one of the resident bunnies is decimating the bean plants since we know that the bunnies have jumped INTO the wooden barrels in the past. But if the bunnies are doing this, explain why just the tops of the bean plants are being eaten, like someone taking a weedwacker to the plants and leaving the lower/bottom foliage and plant intact? I think it's a taller animal, like a deer, walking through the yard and eating the tops of the bean plants.
Either way, our bean plants are not going to produce any beans this year. *sigh*
Doesn't this shot look very lush and promising?
It is.
But it's all WEEDS not veggies!lol
And we got our first blossom on the eggplant plants 2 weeks ago. See the lavender flower on the left in the photo? I don't know if it will produce a fruit however since I haven't see any bees around yet to pollinate stuff. The tomato plants in the backyard bed have golf ball sized tomatoes as of this week so I know the bees are around.
I hope I don't have to resort to playing bee and go from bloom to bloom with a paintbrush on the eggplant and squash blossoms. ;-)
Here's something I do that you might find unusual.
Lettuces are an early Spring crop. You are suppose to plant it early and it dies back by mid summer usually.
Since we can't plant an early crop of lettuces/greens while the weather is still coolish here due to our climate, I sew the lettuce seeds among the cuke and squash plant seeds at the same time I sew the cuke/squash seeds.
This way, by the time the weather gets too warm for the lettuces(the hot weather that makes your lettuce wilt, dry up and die), the squash leaves have grown large enough to shield the lettuce from full sun. The lettuce continues to grow well into August.
Here's my squash type plants....
But move the leaves back and look closer....
See my salad greens!
That's my diversity garden bed. 8-)

Guess What?......
It's Baaaaaaaaaack!
If you are lost and have no clue what I'm talking about, go read THIS or THIS.
It reappeared late Friday. But I did get "the story" from Hubs. He talked to The Hermit on his way back from walking the beagle, as The Hermit was out fussing with the Behemoth RV at that time.
Seems they now store The Behemoth somewhere during the off season.
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hermit says he had it brought here to 'work on stuff'. I guess they'll be taking it out on vacation in the coming weeks.
Gee, at least they get to go somewhere this Summer......sniff, sniff.....
Anyway, it left last October mid month, so it was gone 8.5+ months!
I'm just hoping the Behemoth disappears again come October, or sooner!
This would make me very happy......yes, I am easy to please. ;-)
Ok, I am off to go smoke some ribs now!

July Food Spending Week 1....Keeping on Budget Finally!
I am going to update each week in July on my food spending. After the last 2 months of going over, maybe this will help me stay on track more if all of y'all are watching me.....watching me in a good way, not the bad, creepy way. ;-)
In the 1st 7 days of July I made 10 transactions at the grocery stores.
Actually, I made all 10 transactions/8 trips in TWO DAYS and I haven't been to the store since last Saturday(except for my trip to Rite-Aid on Sunday).
Ok, so 4 of those 10 were at Price Chopper(Northeast)doing the Unilever Catalina Deal(plus 1 more to PC where I didn't buy any Unilever stuff because they were out and I got other things).
I went to Dollar General last Saturday because they had that 1 day Q for $5 off $25 purchase. I bought ALOT of packs of soda and some Flavor-aid packets. I had $1/3 Coke Qs to use along with the $5/$25 Q and was all set for a total of around $18 + tax, HOWEVER, I forgot that these $5/$25 $General Qs are ALWAYS on $25 of items AFTER ALL OTHER QS ARE APPLIED!
Still got a good deal but Argh!
I hate when I forget stuff like that.....and I hate their policy too.
So my Cokes and Flavor-Aid came to $21.51 w/tax.
Add in a trip to Weis, a trip to the Bakery Outlet and 2 small trips to the local ShurSave affiliated market and I spent $66.72 in the 1st week of July.
No trips to the store yet since last Saturday and we've been eating from the stockpile.
SUNDAY--Leftovers
MONDAY--Hot Dogs, Green Beans, Watermelon
TUESDAY--Beef Enchiladas, Corn
WEDNESDAY--Chinese take-out
THURSDAY--Spaghetti w/Meat Sauce, Salad, Watermelon
FRIDAY--Leftovers again, Homemade Pickles
SATURDAY--Homemade Pizza, Salad
I will be going to Weis tomorrow to spend a $10 Catalina Q. I'll probably buy some ribs on sale to cook in the smoker on Sunday and hopefully won't spend any money. 8-)
I'm off now to go figure out a partial menu for next week that let's us eat mainly from the stockpile again.
How about you? Are you eating from your pantry/stockpile next week?

$32K Savings Challenge for 2011.....June Totals or the Treading Water Edition
I have posted my JUNE End of Month $32K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.Check out the side bar to your right for the specific numbers.
I have 2 goals really each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $2,666.67.
I have to report that we finished up June in the black!
The extra cash amount we ended the month of June with.......$316.92.
Income
We had $267.96 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.
Add in $48.96 of Rebates applied against the food expenses and you have a deposit of $316.92 toward the Savings Challenge!
Our monthly target is an average of $2,666.67 to reach our Year End Goal. Do I have to even say we came in well under that amount for June?lol
As I look back over the past 2 years of doing Savings Challenges, I see that June is typically a very expensive month for us. In 2010 we only saved $547.73 in June. So our pitiful savings this month are nothing out of the ordinary for us.
Outgo
As for the expenses in June....
HERE are the GOOD THINGS
* We paid the Sewage bill for the year, so no quarterly payment this month.
* The electric and credit card bills were not higher than last month.
HERE are the BAD THINGS
* The water bill was doubled from last month(we opened the pool).
* We paid cash for camp.
* The WAM money was much higher than usual.
* We had a kennel bill for boarding the dogs.
* We had an electrician bill for running a line to the pool.
* We had a washing machine repair bill.
The Food Budget costs for June are in another post, which is located HERE. The actual Food/Toiletries spending in June was more than $147 over budget or $98 when you take off my rebate check total which I use toward the food bill.
What's ahead for July.......
There are the usual suspects: electricity, water, phone, cable, credit card bill, food cash, etc.
No non-monthly bills this month.
Plus this month will see 3 paychecks....yay! 8-)
So If I can keep the food spending on budget, we should be able to put away a good sized amount into savings this month and make up for June's lackluster showing.
YEAR-TO-DATE TOTAL.....
With 6 months behind us, our Savings total to-date for 2011 is $15,250.91.
And if you need to start putting money into savings......What's that you say? You don't have an emergency fund of 6-8 months worth of expenses!!??....consider playing along in 2011 with me and Challenging Yourself to Save Money each Month Toward a Realistic for YOU Savings Goal!
Not everyone can shoot for $32K, I fully get that!
But everyone can shoot for some number, right!?
Find a money goal that works for you and put that number out there for everyone to see. It will help keep you accountable to your goal if other eyes are on you.
Ooo, that sounded kind of creepy didn't it? ;-)

Don't Look Behind You.....It's Retirement Sneaking UP!
Last year, when I began researching the cost/probability of replacing our heating system with a geothermal system, I realized that it made little sense to spend the money to do this since we wouldn't be living here long enough to recoup the expense of said system.
Yes, it was at that moment that I realized that we only have to live in this school district, as of now, for 3 more years!
And going further, I realized that we only have to live in this area near Hubs job for another 7 years because Hubs has decided that he wants to retire early at 60.
All I can keep thinking is, "How did being near retirement age sneak up on me"!?!?
One day I am dealing with a Husband, 3 kids, 4 dogs and life as a suburban Homemaker and I turn around and I'm 52 years old with only 1 kid left at home fulltime, 2 dogs and a husband who is planning on retiring in 7 years.
Wow!
Other than throwing money into retirement/investment accounts before I get the Hubs paycheck every other week(for the last umpteen years), and glancing at the statements that come in the mail quarterly, we haven't sat down and actually crushed any numbers or figured out how much we will have or need to live in retirement.
Hubs use to tell me offhandedly that he wanted to retire at 55. He comes at that age due to his father, who was a laborer, who worked until he became physically disabled in his 50s. He was forced to retire in ill health/pain and never got to enjoy his old age fully.
Hubs wants to leave the rat race while he still has his health and wits about him.
And I so get that.
But I didn't pay him much heed when he started spouting off about retiring, because well, geez, 55 is a long way off, right?
But it's here now, knocking on the door and I am not wanting to open that door and let Mr. 55 in!
Then after the last few years of Recession/Foreclosures/Bank Bailouts/Stock Market Dives, Hubs stopped throwing around that 55 number.....especially after our investments took a nose dive in 2008/2009.
Last year he started making noises about retiring at 60 instead. He said he ran some numbers and with the hit we took in our savings(even with the rebounds lately), he feels secure about making age 60 his new retirement number.
Besides figuring out the savings balance, I am more comfortable with 60 than I was with 55. Mainly because at 55 we would still have a child in high school and one in college. So the kids would still be dependent on us for financial support. Kids + No income=Bad Planning 8-(
So I want to ask all of you dear readers.....
1. How many years from now do you or does your significant other(if that applies)plan on retiring? Is it a 'historically normal' retirement age or do you plan to retire early? Or is retirement going to happen the day you can no longer physically work or drop dead?
2. And when you retire, do you mean stop working fully?.....Or getting different job--one that is parttime and/or pays less but keeps you active?....or a job that you love?
3. Besides Social Security benefits, are you putting any money away for your retirement?
4. If you were to retire, in today's dollars equivalent, how much money do you think you would need to live on for 1 year? (Don't include the cost for major medical care(other than prescription meds and normal preventative care)in this, just the amount you would need to cover your normal living expenses in retirement with no one to support other than yourself and your spouse, if you will have one.)
5. If you will have savings/cash to live off of in retirement other than SS, do you think you will have enough to support yourself until you die(given no catastrophic medical bills that would bankrupt you)?
How many years do you think you will live until your savings run out?
6. Where will you 'park' your savings? Invest it? Bank it? CD it? Bury it in the backyard? An Annuity? Do you have a Pension?
Yeah, I know this post is pretty much a downer with all this death and running out of money talk?lol
But I am very curious to see how other people are planning for retirement and what they think about entering this stage of their lives.

What Food I Bought in June...A Big Boring List Only for Other Nerd's Eyes
My good blogging buddy, Annie Jones, over at Real Life Living posts what she buys every month. The way she tells it, it shows people that she really does get a lot of food for the little amount she spends each month. You can eat well and still be frugal.
I think it's helpful to see it all written down in one place so you can gauge how you are doing with the food money each month.
HERE is her posted list for June for feeding a family of 3.
So I thought this was a real good idea and decided tosteal borrow her idea and post all the food I buy in a month to feed my family of 4-5.
Besides, I am a big fat NERD!
For June, we had all 5 home for 2 weeks and only 2 people home for the other half of the month. We also threw a Graduation Party for 12 in June.
This list isn't necessarily what we "ate" in June since I stockpile, so we may have only eaten a few things(besides the obvious fresh produce).
But it shows you how far you can make your money go by buying on discount, bulk, sale and paring coupons and/or rebates with the deals.
Here's the food items, including pet foods, I bought in June for an out of pocket of $348.05 after rebates.
It doesn't include the 32+lb. of charcoal I bought that is included in this total spent.

I am listing subtotals for each store I purchased from in June. If you aren't interested in that much detail, just skip to the bottom for the Totals Summary.
My spending includes Food, Toiletries/HBA, Pet Supplies, Cleaning Products, Paper Goods & tax where applicable. We are a family of 5(2-4 at home this month)& 2 dogs. No kids under 15.

I don't track Rite-Aid's +Ups here, nor CVS's ECBs & Walgreen's RRs. They will be included when used on purchases under "Coupons". I'll keep track of what rebates are received monthly. Rebate money/gift cards will be considered 'income' & will go into the Food/Toiletries budget, offsetting the Out of Pocket. Cash will go immediately into the Budget kitty, while Gift Cards will be calculated in when spent.

My best 3 Store Savings Totals were from Rite-Aid at 100%, Target at 100% and the Bakery Outlet as 75%. I shopped at 11 different stores in June.
TOTAL Out of Pocket...............................$397.01
TOTAL Coupons & Store Sales Savings...$775.53

Since my Rite-Aid shopping(which contains No OOP)always skews my savings percentages, I like to figure my Totals without the Rite-Aid numbers also.
TOTAL OOP after Rebates.....$348.05
TOTAL Value of Items Purchases(w/out Rite-Aid items)....$802.18
TOTAL Savings After Rebates(w/out Rite-Aid items).....56.62%
My food savings percentage seems to run about 50%-60% for the strictly food items only.
Those Rite-Aid purchases always boost up my savings total about 20% points.
This closes out the June spending.
THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month-
Even with my rebates added to the food budget kitty, I went just south of $100 over my budget limit for the month. Since I did some Catalina deals and threw a Party for 12 in June, I am not going to beat myself up over this overage.
What's ahead for July.....
We are down to 3 family members at home this month. I hope to ease up on the food spending and try to eat from the stockpiled items in July. July is also the beginning of fresh local produce season so I'll keep my budget at $250 as I will be getting farm produce to put up for winter.
How did you do in June with your Food Budget?
What are your challenges for July? Any family coming to stay....or are you trying to figure out a food budget for a vacation?
Please leave a comment or link to your post and let us hear about your progress! By sharing our struggles and efforts we can help each other stick to our budgets and learn to be better guardians of our resources.

I received $16 in +Ups back($2 Pantene wyb2, 2 x $2 Oral B advantage brushes, $5 Gillette razor, $5 John Frieda wyb2).
I qualified for SCR #5(Oral B Pulsar brush)for $4.50.
*A word of warning on the BOGO AMP AdPerk/VV Q.
Though it should take $1.50 off for the 2 drinks, no matter what the cashier imputs, the register will change it to $1.00.
I know this because the cashier distinctly put in $1.50 and the register changed it to $1.00.
Then I bought 2 more AMPs in the 2nd transaction, so the manager tried to take $2.00 off($1.50 for those 2 cans + the .50¢ they owed me for the previous 2 cans)and the register again changed the amount to $1.00.
So much for computers NOT having minds of their own....lol
So I bought 2 more Amps and another Oral B Pulsar brush on BIL's card.....
This should have been easy, right?
2 x Amp on sale=$3.00
1 x Oral B Pulsar brush on sale=$4.99

This time the Amps rang up at $1.91, which is the reg. price with 20% wellness discount, instead of the sale price of $1.50.
This made my SubTotal...$8.81
After $4 in Qs my Total was $4.81.
I used $4.49 in +Up Rewards and put the .32¢ on my gift card.
I received no +Ups but BIL qualified for a $4.50 SCR #5.
So Rite-Aid owes me .82¢ in overcharges. I might go up and get it, I might not. Just depends on how I feel this week. ;-)
I still have $11.50 in +Up Rewards to spend this week.
Anybody have any ideas or plans?

Weis Markets on Saturday...Using some Catalinas
Friday and Saturday were a big shopping days for me.
Friday was chicken at the local Market, bread and baked goods at the Bakery Outlet and soap at Price Chopper. Saturday was more soap + other items at Price Chopper, then 12 packs of soda and kool-aid packets at Dollar General, then more items at Weis Markets.
I had $19 in assorted OYNO Catalina Qs to use at Weis Markets. They actually expire 'next' Saturday on the 9th but there are no Catalina Deals at Weis the week of the 3rd-9th to roll the Cats, so I went ahead and burned through $9 of them on Saturday the 2nd....
2 x Heluva Good Cheese on sale $2=$4.00
2 x BarS turkey breast on special .99¢=$1.98

5 x Coke 12 packs on sale=$12.00 *not pictured*

The cheese was $1 a block after Qs, the chicken legs were $1 after meat discount Q and the meat Catalina, and the 5 packs of Coke were $4 after Q and Catalina.
In just the first 2 days of July I've already spent $66.72 of my food budget for the month!
I've got to stay out of the grocery stores for the next week. 8-o

Price Chopper and The End of the Soap Saga
If you've been following the adventures of our heroine from this post HERE, she was waiting on the Price Chopper guy to call her when the soap hit the shelves on Saturday morning.
Around the crack of 11 am the phone rings and the PC guy is on the other end. Seems they didn't receive any more Dove Men's soap on the truck. I thanked him for at least letting me know I crapped out on the soap, so I didn't sit by the phone ALL DAY waiting on the call.
At this point I channeled my dead beloved dog, Mango, and said, "Crap"! This was his favorite expression.....well, the expression that would have been his favorite if indeed he could talk. ;-)
Since I had to run out Saturday to other stores I found myself over by the other PC that had soap on Friday. I figured I'd go in and check if any was left at this late stage of the Catalina game.
And I'm glad I did check it out since they were well stocked in the soap! I think this PC jacked the other PC's soap shipment....don't ya think?lol
So I did 3 small transactions, one after another, from left to right in the photo.....
Transaction #1
2 x Dove Men's soap on sale=$10.98
1 x PC Sour Cream=$1.69
1 x Grands whack biscuits on sale=$2.00

I had a young gal cashier who didn't bat an eye when I asked to do 3 transactions in a row. They weren't busy and I didn't go to an Express Lane which helped. And I was organized and prepared and ready with my loyalty card, coupons and money for a change.lol
She got a kick out of what I was doing after the 2nd transaction and she saw how little I was actually spending.
I ended up with 6 6-packs of soap, 3 tubes of whack biscuits, 2 containers of sour cream, 3 packs of hot dogs and a $5 Catalina for a grand total OOP of $3.39.
$74.66 worth of items for a savings of 95.46% and $5 in free food to spend later.
Of course, I couldn't end my trip to PC on a high note, could I?
The parking lot at this store is crazy weirdly shaped with another parking lot just next door. I parked in the lot next door because it was a shorter walk to the entrance of the PC. Makes perfect sense to park closer, right?
So I go to push the cart(one of those mini carts)out of the store and out into the parking lot roadway to get to the lot where I am parked and I almost take a header OVER the cart when it stops dead in the road!
I thought I had hit a deep pothole or something. But I look down to see there is a BOOT on the cart wheel....like the ones they put on parking scofflaws who don't pay their tickets! It must automatically trip the boot when you go over a certain perimeter. Since this other lot is closer than alot of the parking spaces in the PC lot, it can't be a distance thing, so there must be a 'force field' around the store and the store's lot that trips the boot.
I guess they use to have a lot of carts stolen or vandalized in this area but dang, you think they'd put a sign up warning you that your cart will be disabled outside of a certain area. I could have actually gotten hurt if I had fallen to the ground or ran over while I stood out in the road trying to drag that blasted cart back to the curb of the store.
Hmmm....I think I need to write them a letter.....
So I get the cart dragged, half carried back to the curb. Do you know how heavy a shopping cart is?? I do now! 8-(
Then I tried to carry my 3 bags(blasted heavy soap!)to the car with one bag split open down the side and stuff is falling out of it into the road.
Oy!
It's always something, ain't it? ;-)

It's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades at Rite-Aid & Mass Confusion
I forgot to use my Free Item Lay's Chips Qs from the Facebook promo(was that last month?), so it was back to Rite-Aid on Friday while the Lay's Chips are on sale BOGO.....

1 x $5/1 StyleScience sunglasses AdPerk/VV Q=$5.00
2 x FREE SBCoffee drink ManuQ=$2.38
Coupon Total....$24.36
$24.63-$24.36=.27¢ OOP to put on my gift card.
But that's not what happened.
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth(by the cashier)and two, count 'em two managers putting their heads together over this(price modifying an item at a reg. sale price to free with a raincheck went ok but price modifying an item that was on sale AND was free after raincheck put the cashier into a tailspin, thus 2 additional people playing with the register), here is what my transaction looked like.....
4 x Lay's Chips BOGO sale=$7.98
1 x Renpure Shampoo(raincheck)=$0.00
1 x Renpure Shampoo(raincheck)=$5.83!!! --suppose to be $0.00
5 x R-A TP(raincheck from Mar?)=$0.00
1 x Colgate Toothpaste(raincheck)=$.99
1 x R-A Ginger Ale w/wellness discount=$.80
1 x R-A Raisins w/wellness discount=$1.35--suppose to be $1.00
1 x Foster Grant kid's sunglasses=$0.00--suppose to be full price $7.99, says raincheck?
1 x StyleScience kid's sunglasses=$6.39--suppose to be 50% off $3.49
2 x Seattle's Best Coffee drink w/wellness discount @$1.19=$2.38
SubTotal....$25.72--suppose to be $24.63
Coupons of $24.32(they took .04¢ off one of my free Lay's Qs because the register showed I would have been NEGATIVE .04¢ if they put it in for the full $3.99 value)
$25.72-$24.32=$0.00
Honest to Gosh my register receipt says TOTAL....$.00.
And I didn't even use a single +Up nor whip out my gift card.
HUH??? LOLOL
I know it doesn't add up correctly and I've been over the numbers line by line about 20 times, but the receipt shows a $.00 Total.
I think the problem started when the cashier started one of the Renpure Shampoos and had a problem/called the manager over but when they figured out what to do, she rang up a different item and made one of the sunglassess free instead(when it should have been $6 something)and then I just got a wellness discount on the Renpure instead of getting it free.
After the first laborious 28 minute transaction, I wasn't about to make them redo it for a .27¢ difference.
I'm sure Rite-Aid will get that additional .27¢ outta me in the future. ;-)
So, I paid $0.00 OOP and I received $5 in +Up Rewards back(WYB 2 Sunglasses).
If you have need of kid sunglasses, go watch the AdPerks/VV videos for the $5 off Foster Grants and the $5 off StyleScience sunglasses. The sunglasses are BOGO50% until Saturday evening. Your kid sunglasses will run you approx. $11.50 with the sale. Deduct $10 in Qs for a total of around $1.50. Use $1.50 in +Ups and you'll get a $5 +Up Rewards so it's about a $3.50 +Ups moneymaker.
HERE'S A NEWBIE COUPONING TIP--If you have a FREE ITEM Q, wait until a BOGO sale to use it. This will get you 2 items free for your Free Item Q instead of 1. (Especially now since you can NOT use a BOGO Q with a BOGO sale at Rite-Aid to get 2 items free.) By doing this I made my 2 free chip coupons stretch to 4 free bags!

The Dove Men's Soap Goose Chase
So I hike over to Price Chopper AGAIN on Friday since the gal yesterday told me the truck would be in then to bring more soap to the store.
Same gal was at the CS desk and remembered telling me about the truck but I explained that I had already gone over to the aisle and the shelf was still empty!
The gal asks other gal and she confirms that yes, they DID put out more soap that morning so someone came in and must have CLEARED THE SHELF!
Argh.....
I am seriously NOT liking all these Wannabee Extreme Couponistas coming in with their ill mannered shelf clearing ways!
So #2 gal says another truck is coming in late Friday and I get ahold of the guy who will be on duty early Saturday and he is to CALL ME when my soap arrives/is put aside so I'll go down when I get the call as I have other errands I can run tomorrow over there....IF I get the call since there are no guarantees that more soaps is on that truck.
So since I am out and have to go on the other side of town on Friday, I stop in the other Price Chopper......and low and behold, they have SOAP!
**The sounds of an angelic chorus as they descend over my head.**
So I bought 2 packs of soap...2 x $5.49=$10.98
I used 2 x $4/1 Dove ManuQs...$10.98-$8.00 in Qs=$2.98 +.66¢ tax=$3.64 OOP
And I received a $5 Catalina Q.
Then I bought 2 more packs of soap..2 x $5.49, and a seedless watermelon*not picture*....$10.98+$2.99=$13.97
I used 2 x $4/1 Dove ManuQs & the $5 Cat Q($13)....$13.97-$13.00=$.97+.36¢ tax=$1.33 OOP
And received a $5 Catalina Q.
So if the truck at the other PC doesn't bring more soap, I'm all good with these 4 packs.
I'll get more if they call me though.
I'm thinking of doing "this" transaction since I have another $2/1 Hatfield Q.....
2 x Dove soap=$10.98
3 x Hatfield hot dogs B1G2F=$3.99
1 x 1 zuchinni @ $1.29 lb.=approx. $.50
SubTotal....$15.47
Coupons....2 x $4/1 Dove Soap, 1 x $2 Hatfield, 1 x $5 Cat Q=$15.00
OOP....$.47 + tax and get another $5 Catalina
$.47 + tax for 12 bars of soap, 3 packs of hot dogs and a zuke sounds pretty good to me.
If I get 2 more packs of soap I can add in a couple of containers of sour cream, as we are out, and after Qs, my total OOP for 12 more bars of soap and 2 containers of dairy will be about $1.50 with tax(plus I'll receive another $5 Catalina Q).

Last Shopping Trip for June.....The Good & The Bad
Price Chopper(Northeast)has a Unilever Catalina Deal this week.
Buy $15 in select products(using reg. shelf price, not sale price), get a $5 Catalina.
You can buy 2 packs of the Dove Men's bar soap, on sale for $5.49(reg. shelf price of $8.49), use 2 x $4/1 Dove Men's soap ManuQs(from last Sunday's inserts) so the transaction looks like this....
2 x $5.49=$10.98-$8Qs=$2.98 + tax OOP, receive $5 Catalina Q.
Once you have the $5 Cat, you buy 2 more packs of that soap and at least $2.02 worth of meat/dairy/some other thing you want that you never have Qs for and you get it all for FREE(the 2 packs of soap and $2.02 of the other stuff you buy)& you get another $5 Catalina Q to keep rolling until you run out of the $4 Qs.
Well my Qs arrived in the mail yesterday so I ran to PC to use them.
The problem is there was not a bar of the Men's Dove soap left in the grocery store to buy!
Ugh.
So while I was there I snooped around and found a few other things to bring home. Hey, I've already blown past my food budget limit for June, why not just add to the misery, right?lol
1 x frozen corn on sale=$1.00
3 x Pop-Secret popcorn on sale B1G2F=$2.99
5 x organic mult-grain flour Tortillas on sale $1.99=$9.95
3 x Hatfield hot dogs on sale B1G2F=$3.99
SubTotal....$17.93
Coupons Used
1 x $1/2 Pop-Secret ManuQ=$1.00
10 x .75¢ Instant dairy section discount stickers on the Tortillas=$7.50
1 x $2/1 any Hatfield item IPQ(Hatfield website)=$2.00
Coupon Total....$10.50
$17.93-$10.50=$7.43 OOP
Reg. retail was $36.89, for a 79.86% savings!
Analysis--The popcorn boxes and each pack of hot dogs came to .66¢ a piece with the sales/Qs. Ok, they aren't Nathan's or Hebrew National, but these hot dogs are a mite better than Oscar Mayers! Suitable to feed the teenage son's hoard of friends that descends on the house in the summer.lol
The tortillas were a great buy! The $1.50 in instant discount stickers on each package made them .49¢ per package. Really good for organic and multigrain. I'll tuck these into the freezer until they are needed.
The package of corn was needed for that evening's dinner plan.
I'm headed back to Price Chopper in a little bit to see if the restocking truck did indeed arrive, as I was told it would. If I don't end up being able to use these Dove soap Qs there, there is always Rite-Aid, right?lol

I used $8.97 in +Ups to pay and put the .22¢ on my Rite-Aid gift card.
I received back $10.38 in +Up Rewards(2 x $2.69 Oral-B, 2 x $1 Excedrin, $1 Veet, $2 Old Spice), so I am 'up' $1.41 for this transaction.
This leaves me going into next week with $37.96 in +Ups expiring on the 9th.
On a side note--I think my camera is dying. It's the 1st digital camera I've owned so the technology is way outdated. I just never saw the point of upgrading as long as this one was working. Yes, call me frugal!lol Anyway, it keeps telling me to change the batteries, and I do, but the camera will take 1 or 2 shots and then shut off saying I need to change the batteries AGAIN! Argh It took me 20 minutes to coax it into letting me take the photo above.
So it looks like I'm in the market for a new camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
This one is a Canon Power Shot A40. I think the Power Shots are up in the A400 range now.lol
I want the new one to be on the frugal side and idiot proof, well, because I'll be using it! 8-)

I thought I had a better plan worked out using the BOGO Q from the P&G insert for the Oral-B toothbrushes. It would have made it only $2.69 OOP for both toothbrushes before using +Up Rewards to pay, but that Q was not valid on the 3-D white/Advantage manual toothbrushes, just the Cross Action manual brushes. 8-(
I'll be going up again tonight to get some prescriptions so I'll get some more 'Cedrin and Toof brushes if they have any left on the BIL's Wellness card. I have $46 in +Ups expiring the following Saturday and next week's ad doesn't look promising to me, so I'll roll some more +Ups this week.

Summer Plans Go Boom!
Well we've had some change in the summer plans for this year.
Seems that although Hubs has many MANY days of vacation time/personal time left for the year at his job, he let me know that we won't be able to take any kind of vacation this summer.
His workplace is like many these days where the employees get time off but the work is piled up so high on the employees that haven't been downsized yet, that no one is able to take their days off without feeling like it might cause them to also lose their job.
Plus Hubs is working on time sensitive projects and the deadlines are looming during the summer months so even though he has days to take, he just can't take them now.
****Sigh****
This means that unless I want to go somewhere by myself(or with #2 son only, once he gets back from camp), I am stuck at home for the summer.
We also usually take a few days in the early Fall to go to the beach.
But this year, only 1 kid will be left at home and we don't feel he is ready/mature enough to be left alone for the duration, so the fall mini-vacation is off as well.
So now I've got to salvage my summer plans.
If I take #2 son with me somewhere it will have to include an amusement park since that's all he says he wants to do. He'd have a blast but I'd be bored to tears since I don't "do" rides.
And anything I'd want to do/see would make his eyes glaze over.
Add in the fact that no 15 year old boy wants to 'hang out' with his mom.
You see the problems planning a trip with just us two will involve.lol
I'm off to ponder a solution.
Any suggestions are certainly welcomed!
