Thank You All!

I had to draw a spiraling circle and mine looked not quite as bad as the one on the right in this photo.

Miracles do happen it seems.....either that or my PCP did really listen to how desperate my ADL(activities of daily living)situation was(I was actually considering checking myself into an assisted living facility).  After they gave me an appointment 7 Months out, I was put on the Wait List for Neurology and miraculously an appointment opened up on Wednesday and I saw a text about it Tuesday evening.  Either someone canceled at the last minute(but I can't think why someone would cancel/reschedule a Neurology appt!)or somehow they figured out how seriously impaired I had become and they squeezed me in.

So I got a good going over with a new Neurologist, a med student(it's a teaching hospital after all)and then the head Dr. came in too after the Neurologist went to consult with him.  I got tested(I failed the touch your nose with your pointer finger, then touch the doc's pointer finger test as well as hold your hands out i front of you and keep them from trembling test.)

For now I've been diagnosed with Essential Tremors and put on an epileptic anti-seizure medication.(This or a Beta-Blocker(which I have adverse reactions to)is standard treatment for this disorder.)

Now we start working on getting the dosage right.  I'm on 25 mg(half a pill)for the first 4 days to get me use to it.  Then I go on the full 50mg dose and wait a few days and if that doesn't take care of the tremors we start upping the dosage.

They are also scheduling me for an MRI to check that I don't have something worse going on(like Parkinson's or lesions on my brain)since my tremor condition seemed to worsen at a quick clip and could be part of something else developing in my head plus I have family history on both sides of neurological conditions.

I'd be happy with "just" Essential Tremors thankyouverymuch!  There is no cure for this condition and it can get worse and most probably will.  Kim's hubby who passed had this condition so I've seen first hand how it can affect your life.  I don't know yet(didn't ask)how bad or how high they can push the med for it but we'll cross that bridge when and if we get there.

I see the Orthopedist early in August so we are moving ahead with the knee replacement here.  But I am also moving ahead with the elite joint surgeon program available through our insurance too.  I had picked a surgeon near Columbus OH but then they told me he insists on an in person pre-op appointment and won't do that through telemedicine.  That means trekking 995 miles to OH TWICE-once for an in-person appt. and then again for the actual pre-op testing/surgery/beginnings of PT afterwards.  And what if I go to OH and go through that initial visit and fly home and the surgeon says he won't take my case?  All that effort was for nothing and I have to start all over again in that program. ugh

So I switched to a different surgeon in the same practice who will do the initial pre-op stuff via telemedicine.  They are suppose to get back to me next week to schedule that particular appt. so we can get that ball rolling.

Basically whichever surgeon can schedule me for the knee surgery sooner gets to do it. 8-)  Either way I'll be in Physical Therapy afterwards for many, many months.

And next week I get to have more fun.....2 days of PT for my back bookending my 10 year Colonoscopy.  Goody!  I don't mind that procedure but the day before prep?  That's the b*tch!  But at this point I eat so little anyway I won't mind and barely notice going a day without eating.  Now drinking that nasty prep stuff and staying close to a bathroom all day is another story. lol

This year is genuinely what I've been calling it, the "Year of the Shit Show"(and next week will be an actual shit show on Wednesday).

I just want to thank everyone who has reached out with prayers, concerns, etc. for me this past week.  I was in a very dark place mentally before getting into see a Neurologist.  Between that and family drama plus Hubs brother passed away up in PA on July 13th, things have been nothing approaching "normal" with us.

  3. This is wonderful. I know hope is a powerful thing. But, you have hope now. I don't understand the elite joint surgeon program.

  4. Sluggy, so glad you were able to get in to see the the neurologist! Now to get you on the road to "recovery". My last colonoscopy, instead of drinking the dreaded nasty gallon of liquid, my doctor prescribed Sutab pills. 12 pills the night before with 2 glasses of clear fluid and 12 pills the morning of the procedure. Same effect but without the nasty stuff (that made me vomit). And I didn't experience the stomach cramping with these either. Good luck and hang in there! Things have to get better! (don't they?).

    1. I am glad to hear there is something else besides the liquid that makes me throw up. I was told there was nothing else!

  5. So happy to see your post and that you got to see a neurologist! Yeah! My husband had essential tremors, he didn’t go on meds since he was already on a boatload of other meds and decided he wouldn’t add any more meds into his body, he would just adapt (and I did any finesse work for him). But his level of tremors still allowed him to manage most things. Healing sparkles headed your way. I have a colonoscopy coming up next month and I laughed out loud at your comments. ;). 7. Praise the Lord that you got in so quickly. A diagnosis to boot! I sure hope the medication helps alleviate the tremors and you can have a more normal life.
Prayers sure do help. Blessings to you!

  8. You're doing a knee replacement? I work for an Ortho! We give patients about 8 sessions, so two a week for four weeks, but it is covered by our provincial health care plan. Once you're active pre surgery, I always think that helps more than not. Did anyone give you a booklet for exercises to do pre surgery? We give one to our patients for them to work on the knee pre op. I am so glad you saw the neurologist and are getting sorted out, bit by bit.

  12. Jre OMG prayers answered. I know they will figure this out and teaching hospitals are amazing! I need a knee replacement so am following this closely both this ? Pre knee workout and premium places for surgery (I’m not well informed) I do know I’m bone on bone, cortisone shots didn’t help which was probably predictable (bone on bone) nor pt (but I was a bad follower :(. I’ll be 70 and this getting old is shitty but the alternative? (Husband died at 41 so I feel guilty complaining). But this year I feel yah, multiple family issues, just finished a crying spell, vertigo, miserable knee, botched cataract surgery (I see worse than before, developed secondary cataracts and had laser surgery, see worse in left eye now I’m to a retinal specialist)….. shit. So I do feel like complaining. But very glad you’re getting some help.

  13. Glad you were able to be seen. I hope the meds help and don't cause other issues. Sorry to hear about the loss if hub's brother. So, the big question now is, should I delete my last bog post????

  14. Oh I'm so glad that you were able to see a neurologist. I hope that the meds can improve your quality of life and that the knee surgery will lessen the pain. I'm sorry for the loss of your husband's brother.
Ugh on the prep, my dh has his test next week and has to drink the gatorade. I only had to do the cologuard test a few weeks ago which was negative, yay.
Thanks for the update and the good news about the neurologist appt.

  18. This is my prep plan.....I change the sheets on my bed and get it all comfy. I have a good book to read. Then around 2 am I say eff it and pour what's left down the sink, have a shower and go to bed. Works every time. Best of luck, Barbara

  19. Welcome back. I am also a sufferer with essential tremor. I've had it for about 15-20 years. I learned that it runs in families and my mom, me and two of my daughters have this. It started with one hand and now affects both of them. I can no longer write well, holding a cup with a drink gets spilled if it's more than half full, eating can be embarrassing with utensils in motion, and using the cell phone with it's small numbers is a joke. I was diagnosed by my primary Dr. I do take a beta blocker for heart issues but it hasn't helped with the tremors. I just live with it but it's not easy. Hope your treatment is effective. diane
