What I Got at Rite-Aid This Week

I had $30+ in +Up Rewards to spend and/or roll before Saturday night.
Not alot this week I want/need that would let me roll more than I spent down.
That's how Rite-Aid gets you.......they give you a week with a ridiculous number of great deals, so that you end up with lots and lots of +Up Rewards, and then for the next 2 weeks(that's how long you have before most +Ups expire) the store has nothing.....nada......no opportunities to roll those +Ups.
*sigh*

So it was off to Rite-Aid to shop......

1 x Bayer aspirin (used raincheck)=$3.00
4 x Dawn dish soap(used raincheck .97¢ea.)=$3.88
2 x Glad trash bags on sale($4.49ea.)=$8.98
2 x Playtex Ortho binkies 20% Wellness discount($4.39ea.)=$8.78
2 x Conair hair brushes BOGOF sale=$9.19
1 x Conair comb 20% Wellness discount=$2.23
SubTotal....$36.06

Coupons Used
1 x $3/1 Bayer ManuQ=$3.00
2 x $1/2 Dawn dish soap ManuQ(P&G insert)=$2.00
2 x $2/1 Glad trash bags AdPerksQ=$4.00
1 x $2/2 Playtex Ortho binkies IPQ=$2.00
Coupon Total......$11.00

$36.06-$11.00=$25.06
I used $25 in expiring +Up Rewards.

$25.06-$25 +Ups=$.06 + $.15tax=$.21 OOP.
I put the 21¢ on my trusty Rite-Aid gift card.

I received back $13 in new +Ups(2 x $4 for the Binkies, $5 WYB $10 in Conair items).

And here's the analysis.....
* The aspirin was free after Q and raincheck.  This was a free with +Ups deal last month that my store has been out of since then.  I'm happy they got some in before the Q expired later this month.  With 3 kids there is always a need for headache medication.lol

* With the $1/2 Qs and raincheck, the Dawn came out to .47¢ per bottle.  Dish soap is a staple in my stockpile.  It doesn't go bad and it's something you need.

*  Glad trash bags are on sale at R-A this week for a decent price-$4.49.  By pairing this sale with the August AdPerks $2 off Glad products Q, they are $2.49 a box.  If you have a ManuQ to stack with this AdPerksQ, you can get them for even cheaper this week.  Again, I like to keep a stockpile of these items.

* Select Playtex baby products produce a $4 +Up this week, including these pacifier packs.  The binkies are NOT on sale but if you have a Wellness discount, they are under $1 each after discount, the Q and +Ups you receive back.  This is not something I need, but it was good for rolling expiring +Ups AND I'll either wrap them up for my "baby is due any day" friend or I'll tuck them back for another gift opportunity.  They don't take up much room so I don't mind hanging onto them for now.

* Now to the deal that got me excited!
The hair brushes.
This week the Conair brushes are BOGO free.  Plus there is a $5 +Ups when you buy $10 in these products.
I got 2 boar bristle(the GOOD ones!)brushes for the price of one--$9.19.
I had to buy a small item to get me to $10 spent, so I also got the black comb, which cost me $2.23 after Wellness discount.  Since I didn't get 2 combs, my 20% Wellness discount kicked in on that item.
I spent $11.42 on 2 good brushes and a comb and I got a $5 +Ups back.
In the end I spent $6.42 on 2 good quality hair brushes and a comb.
I can match that deal anywhere!
One of them is going into #2 Son's Xmas stocking and the other I'll keep in reserve for when he loses the one Santa brings. 8-P

Pardon me for gushing over these brushes......

I used $25 in +Ups.....$13 was rolled, $12 was spent.
I still have $9 to spend/roll before Saturday is out.

August Grand Totals so far this month.....

Out Of Pocket....$0  cash
Value of items bought....$321.16
Savings Rate of  100%
Single Check Rebate due....$2.00
After SCR applied, Out of Pocket....Still $0
Savings Rate Still  100%

+Ups at beginning of month...$14+
+Ups used....$70+
+Ups received...$89+
+Ups currently...$33+

Tales From the College Crypt

I found this image and thought it said some things I've been saying for years.

You CAN get a college degree without debt but it takes some doing and you have to be super motivated.

Which takes us to my post for today.
It's about college and my kids.

Regular readers will remember that we have 2, count 'em 2, kids in college at the moment.
My oldest is a senior and my daughter is a sophmore.

We have/had a set amount of $ for each of our kids for college.
They were/are told how much we will spend on their college and then it's up to them to make the hard choices......
The choice of going to a less pricey school and pay cash and get their degree without debt OR to going to the high priced school and having to take out loans to finish the program.

#1 Son(oldest)chose an in-state public school with on-campus housing and meal plan.  His college fund(along with a small academic scholarship)was enough to cover all his costs, including textbooks.  Covered it all except for incidentals(pizza out, movies, fun money, etc.)which he covered with pay from a part time job.
He's our most sensible child.

As a safety measure in his 3rd year, he took out and got a $1K subsidized loan.  With the steep increase in the school's rates, he was worried about his college funds not quite covering all his bills that year.  After the school's financial aid department used some weird formula to deduct this and that from his loan, he ended up receiving $59 each semester in loans.
Yes, I just said he got FIFTY NINE DOLLARS out of a THOUSAND DOLLAR Loan that was awarded to him.
Obviously somebody somewhere needs to relearn how they do math.

Anyway, he finished his junior year of college with the grand total of $118 in student loans.
This would be ridiculously easy to pay off, right?

We sat down and had the senior year college money talk with him last Spring.
Due to a few other fees we didn't count on(clearances and such as he is going into teaching), and more increases in tuition and other charges, he doesn't have quite enough left in his college fund to finish his last year without paying out of his own pocket-either cash or taking on loans.

If he stayed on campus and on the meal plan for his last year, he would end up using all of what is left in his college fund and need another $5000.
In anticipation of this shortfall, #1 son applied for college loans again and found out in May that he was awarded $7500 worth this time around.
This would be MORE than enough to get him through.....unless financial aid starts yanking some of it and doing voodoo math again.

But.......
Living on campus is NOT what he is planning to do.
He got it in his head that he could live cheaper off campus in an apartment and cook for himself.
The real reason is he wants to live with his girlfriend and THAT'S not going to happen in a double dorm room this year.
The GF has a car, so they can live outside of this tiny college town(aka find a cheaper rental)and still get to classes.
With having to pay for gas to get to class I think the savings of living off-campus would be negated by the new transportation costs.
But it's his life, right? ;-)

So they have been actively looking since March for an apt. and let's just say that after 4+ months, it's just not happening.
Until early last month when GF's relatives unexpectedly gave them both a place to live for the school year.
For a very low cost.
So low in fact that now #1 son may not need those loans he took out even if he has to pay/cook his own meals.

You know this can't be the end of the story right? ;-)

So with things looking pretty good for him......seriously, who leaves college with $118 in student loans!?lol........until last month he comes up with a new complication.

GF and he have determined that having 1 car between them is not going to cut it.
#1 son has to student teach each semester this year.....one semester in a rural school and the other in an urban school.
Since his college is in a tiny town with no public transportation(outside of the college bus that goes to the Walmart each day), he will need to find a ride for both teaching gigs without being able to ride the bus there.
And GF doesn't think that with her schedule that they can rely on her car to get them to school AND to his assignments outside of town.

Soooooo, #1 son has decided he needs his own car.
And since he has this loan money being applied to his bill(with some leftover too), what is left of his college fund(that he doesn't need for rent and food)can be used to buy a car.
And he will come out of school with a total of $7618 in student debt.
For a car.

*thunk*

So we had a long talk about all this.....but in the end it's his life, his money and his decision.
It doesn't make me happy but he'll be the one who has to live with having to pay this off.
And if it breaks down, he's the one who has to pay to fix it and he has been told as much.
And he is paying for the car insurance as well.
Outside of funding the purchase, we are washing our hands of this car.

Stayed tuned for more developments.............

Even Though You Are Frugal, You Can Still Be Nice

One of the gals I am friendly with up at my local Rite-Aid store is expecting a baby.
She is due in the next couple of weeks actually.
This is her first baby and she is super excited. 8-)

She is a sweet person, so I really wanted to do something nice for her.
Even though I am not what you'd call one of her friends in her personal life, I wanted to give her something for the new baby.  But I wanted to be frugal about it, because, well......that's what I am, frugal!lol    I went about getting a gift together without spending money.  It took planning and time to pull off.  But I had time on my side, since I've known about her impending bundle since about March.

So as soon as I found out that she had a bun in the oven, I set about entering Giveaways online for baby items.  There are always tons of giveaways out there for all kinds of baby stuff on the internet.  You name it, you can find someone giving it away in order to promote a company and/or a blog.

I know she is like me, in that she doesn't believe in having a lot of "stuff".  She's not into newfangled products that aren't "needs"......she doesn't have the room in their tiny apartment for all kinds of gadgets and doo-dads that aren't necessities for raising a baby.  She is also very big on being "natural", using natural products.

So I entered giveaways for baby stuff that was useful.
And I scored some 7th Generation diapers for free and a hardcover copy of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss back in March.  Even if she does cloth diapering, she will have occasions where disposables will be needed.

And 2 weeks ago, I bought a bunch of Johnson's Baby body wash and lotion from their "Naturals" line in a couple of my Rite-Aid trips.  These products didn't hardly cost me anything.
Combined it all made for a nice little gift for her new baby.

Now I didn't have a baby themed gift bag to put it all into but I did have a Summer themed bag(watermelons!.....so appropriate when you look like you are about to give birth to a watermelon!lol).   The bag was done in soft blue and rose colors.  There was a gift tag on the bag so no baby greeting card was needed either.

This baby gift cost me only cents on my gift card and I used something I had already.  Can't get much more frugal than that! ;-)

And the mom-to-be loved it.  She didn't expect this and she was thrilled to get it....especially the book since she said it is her favorite Dr. Seuss book and she told her hubby she wanted to get the baby a copy of it when she got older.
And she loved the irony that I got all the Johnson's baby stuff from where she works.....she may have checked me out on one of those trips too.lol

And it warmed my heart to make her happy.
And I got to be a nice person but still maintain my miserly frugal ways.

But if anyone ever says I'm a nice person, don't you believe them..... ;-)

It Drives Me Nuts!

photo  credit Chris Ratcliffe / Bloomberg / via Getty Images

I use to spend soooo much time in Toys R Us stores when my kids were little.
The oldest was a LEGO Maniac.
Seriously addicted to them!
I still have the scars on the bottoms of my feet to prove it.......
Plus I use to sell some things on eBay.

So I had a real good guffaw when I was THIS STORY HERE about a mother/son duo who when on a methodical crime spree and sold the the illegally gotten goods at an online auction/marketplace site which will remain anonymous, by the name of eBay. ;-)

I love the ironic little twist at the end......see if you can figure out what I am talking about with that!

It made me stop and think too.
Now WHY didn't I think of this and implement it?
Ok, I know why......because I wouldn't have been able to live with myself, that's why!

And the title of this post?
So many things about our culture drive me nuts so take your pick. lol
Atcually, it's in reference to that stupid backwards "R" in the toy retailers name.  It drives me insane but I admit it IS a rather clever marketing tool that some ad person came up with for the chain.
And it never kept me from dropping $ on toys in the store so argh!!! at you T-(backward)R-U

What do you think about this story?

Food Spending August Week 2 & Meal Planning Week 3

Repeating the picture above again this week.  I got to thinking and the caption is all wrong!
It should read, "If Looks could kill women wouldn't need CAST IRON SKILLETS.
Am I right? ;-)

*****************************
And here is the "meal plan" that actually happened last week.....

Sunday--Chicken Parmesan, Spaghetti, Green Beans
Monday--Meatloaf, Squash Casserole
Then things went haywire.....
Tuesday--Leftovers
Wednesday--Steak, COC
Thursday--Rigatoni with Mushrooms in Sauce
Friday--More Leftovers + mixed veggies
Saturday--Leftovers Yet Again(plus a big tossed salad)

I only made 2 of the original meals I planned.  Wed and Thurs we changed plans due to a store sale on steak, corn of cob and mushrooms(I had the sauce and pasta already.).  The 2 meatloaves and leftover pasta left us with many leftovers.

The weekly food spending was $188.09.  This is waaaay high for me in just 1 week.
I hadn't counted on the local Shursave market having their semi-annual MEAT SALE last week.  About $150 of that spending was pure meat.  I got a large Pork Shoulder(for smoking and barbecue), 7 lbs. of ribeye steaks and 2 large eye round tenderloins which I hacked up into smallish sirloin steaks and cubed the ends into stewing beef chunks.
Only about $40 of what I spent last week was on non-meat necessities.

I have $91.93 left of my $400 food budget for August.
And it's just the 13th of the month.
A.C.K.

I do have $12 in Cats and a $10 gift card to help get me through the rest of August without going over my $91.93 left.   That gives me around $113 for the rest of the month.  Just keep any deals and sales away from my eyes!lol

Going into the new week I have the following leftovers to use up......meatloaf, rigatoni in sauce.

***********************

This week's menu.....
Sunday--salmon with maple glaze, Stir-fried mixed veg, mashed potatoes
Monday--BLT sandwiches with tomato from our garden...slurp!
Tuesday--tuna helper, caesar salad
Wednesday--Leftovers
Thursday--tacos or taco salad
Friday--burgers, baked beans, cucumber salad
Saturday--Leftovers

I'm going for easy peasy this week on the stovetop or outside on the grill and no running the oven.
What I need to buy this week to serve this menu?.....cucumbers.
I bought bread, carrots, rolls, lunchmeat for lunches and lots of lettuce last week so it's just cukes and milk.  I'm going to try to keep the spending under $20 this week.....I have to use the $12 in Cats this week, so actual $ spending of $8 or less.

So what's on deck for your menu this week?

Wallowing in Self-Loathing

I have hit an emotional/psychological loggerhead in regards to the decluttering again.

I have gotten down to the last layer of stuff I need to get rid of both here in the house/garage and the storage unit.
The "stuff" are things I bought to resell but due to either just having too much and not enough time to sell it, or the "market" for this stuff just isn't there anymore(due to higher shipping costs and the weaker economy making collector's cut back on spending), it still sits here.
I've tried selling locally and even with ridiculously low prices and THAT doesn't work.
So I know intellectually I need to just finish carting all of it off to charity and take what little bit of a tax write-off I can get.

So I send a little bit off and then I stop......because I just can't emotionally continue to send off the rest.
So the rest sits for weeks on end while I wrestle with myself emotionally.

Eventually I get mad enough(at myself for buying too much, at myself for not being able to let it go, at "it" for still being here in my life causing me pain), and that motivates me to send a little bit more off to charity.
And then I show what I send off on the blog and someone who hasn't been here long, inevitably comments about "why are you giving away such nice and new stuff?.....why don't you sell it?". lol
And I plummet back into an emotional/psychological dark place again and the cycle starts again.

So in the end, I DO end up getting rid of this stuff but I am in a cycle now whereas it is going to take me FOREVER to get it all done.

Here's an example of what I am talking about......
I pulled a box of Boyds bears out.
This is a box of stuffed critters I've had since 2000.
I first pulled this box out 2 years ago to sort through and check the prices things were going for online(eBay).
All but 2 of the critters aren't worth my time or energy to sell, for what they would bring in(going by sold prices on completed listings).
Not worth it for the last 3 times in 2 years I've pulled it out.

So guess who pulled the box out again 2 days ago? lol
I check online again.
Still not worth the time to sell.
Duh....really?lol

But then I get another idea......why don't I sell them on Etsy?.....or even Amazon?
I go check and people have these things listed on both marketplaces.
Then I think.....but what are the chances they would actually SELL?
And how long would I have to keep them listed in order to get a sale?.....meaning I could still be storing these things a year or two from now, waiting on a sale.
And I don't want to still be toting these critters around in 2 years from now.

And then I got depressed......and now I am getting mad at myself......for being silly........and an idiot.

I feel like a full fledged hoarder sometimes.  I might have nicer stuff and not throw it on the floor with garbage and waste but the fact is, I am emotionally attached to this stuff like a hoarder.

I think I need some of y'all to come here and hold my hand while I make the decisions to to get rid of it all.

Do you have stuff you know you need to get rid of that you can't bring yourself to throw out or give away?
Or are those loony tunes of those hoarder shows and I alone in this?

Poking Fun At Politics

*WARNING!
If you have no sense of humor and you don't want to see yet another political post on the internet, just leave now.

If you've been hanging around Chez Sluggy for awhile you know that I often times drip with sarcasm.
I do enjoy a good needling, don't you?
Especially when a subject is ripe for poking fun at.
Like say......Politics and those vile creatures known as Politicians.
Or more specifically deeply embedded career politicians.

When the gang of guys who founded this country were tinkering with how things should work in the new Republic of the United States, one of their principles was that government be as small as possible.
It was there to protect us from foreign and hostile invaders(army/militia) and to keep the order internally by way of rules and enforcement(laws/police).
It was not there to take all our income(taxes)or get in the way of our conducting business(bureaucracy).

The people who served in government did so on a limited basis.  Elected officials served their term or 2 and then they went home to their REAL job or business and continued to live their life and SUPPORT THEMSELVES.
You didn't stay in office for 40 years and then retire and go home lugging along a big fat retirement package that the people who elected you in the first place had to work additional years to pay for YOUR lifetime monthly check along with the work to save for their own retirement income.

But I digress.....

The founding fathers didn't foresee how politicians would take advantage of the system.
Knowing human nature they should have  seen it coming but they weren't perfect.
They dropped the ball.
And after 236 years of bloat and graft, look at the Monster we have now!

(The cartoon could be a Rep. Admin....doesn't matter which party.)

Again I digress......

The point is I found a "cute" little video online and I thought I'd share it with you all.
It also reminds me of a favorite quote of mine attributed to Albert Einstein.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Please thing about this quote as we get closer to Election Day on Nov. 6th.

And now, with apologies to Rogers & Hammerstein for your listening pleasure......lol.....

Rite-Aid & Complaining

Boy, you hit the jackpot today!
You get to see the spoils from my latest trip to Rite-Aid AND you get to hear complaining.
Lucky, Lucky YOU!

A quickie to Rite-Aid last night......it's a slow week again there.....

2 x Gillette Sensor 3 disposable razors on sale $7.49=$14.98
1 x Conair VIBE hairbrush on sale but 20% Wellness disc. cheaper=$2.63
1 x Revlon tweezer w/20% Wellness discount=$2.39
2 x Milky Way DARK(Mmmmm) candy bars on sale BOGO=$.99
SubTotal.....$20.99

Coupons Used
1 x $2/1 Gillette disposable razors ManuQ(7/22 RP)=$2.00
1 x BOGO Gillette disposable razors ManuQ(8/5 RP)=$7.49
1 x $2/1 Revlon Eye Beauty Tools AdPerk IPQ=$2.00
1 x .75/2 Milky Way candy bars IPQ(no longer available)=$.75
Coupon Total.....$12.24

$20.99-$12.24=$8.75 + .06¢tax=$8.81

I used $8 in +Up Rewards and put the .81¢ on my Rite-Aid gift card.
I received back $6 in +Up Rewards(2x$2 WYB Gillette disposable razor pack, 1x$2 WYB Vibe hairbrush or Scuncii hairbands).

The tweezers should give me enough to get the SCR #30(Purchase $5 worth of beauty tools/Get $2).
I was at $4.50 with the last 2 tools I bought so now will be over $5.
Last month's SCR for beauty tools R-A counted the reg. shelf price, even if you bought them on a BOGO50% deal.
So I spent $8 in +Ups and got back $6 +Ups and $2 SCR cash.

*With the 2 razor Qs, I believe these both can be used on Mach 3 or Sensor 3  razors.  Read the wording, look at the picture on it to be sure.  My store was out of the Mach3(since that is the one all the deal bloggers told everyone to buy), but you can use on Sensor 3 as well.

And here is the Deal I wanted to do to CONVERT some +Ups to cash, but my store doesn't carry this product.....
Part of this BOGO50% Deal is the Luster Now! Mouthrinse.  It's usually $6.99 reg. shelf price, so 2 bottles on this sale would be $10.48.

I had these coupons to use....

2 x $1.50/1 IPQ(from their website)=$3.00
2 x $1.25/1 R-A Oral Care book Q=$2.50
Total....$5.50

$10.48-$5.50=$4.98, (and you pick up a small item(Cella cherry)to get your total over $5.  Then you use $5 in +Ups to pay and pay the small change amount left OOP.

Then you take your receipt and apply for SCR #28--Luster Now! Mouthrinse $3 rebate on each.
There is a limit of 2 of this rebate per household, so you get $6 cash back.
Spend $5 in +Ups(and some change), Get $6 cash back.
Awesome, right? 8-)
But only if you can find a store that carries it.  Mine carries the toothpaste and the whitening strips in this brand but not the mouthrinse. 8-(

And that's probably my only trip this week.
Slow week for my needs......they can't all be a trip to the circus.

And I probably thought I forgot about the complaining I promised you in the title, right?
HA!

Well I didn't forget.....but for a change, it's NOT ME complaining!
Evidently I ticked someone off enough that they couldn't be satisfied with leaving a comment on the post, they had to email me privately.
Seems my blog is just for bragging about my Rite-Aid trips.
Because I didn't post details like a deal blogger.
And I posted it AFTER the store had closed that night and the sale was over for the week.

First off, this ain't a deal blog.
I tried that but it bored even ME to tears!lol
It was too much work, too much pressure and just plain boring.
I sit here and pound out posts for the pleasure in it.
I am NOT making a living off this blog.

Blogging?.....for money?.....Really??!!

In the immortal words of Austin Meyers....."That ain't my bag baby!"

You want some suggestions for deal bloggers to follow, let me know and I'll post a few.

And secondly, I don't usually get to the store until later in the week.
I am not sitting in my car at the crack of dawn waiting on Rite-Aid to unlock their doors on Sunday morning.
If I did I think my store would force me to get a job there and start opening for them......I am there a lot but not on a regular basis and NEVER early in the morning.....unless I stayed up all night. hehe

I try to post details on what I buy/what coupons I use if I think it will help someone else see a deal.
So yeah, I guess some days my Rite-Aid posts are mainly bragging.
So sue me......wait, don't do that!

Ok, it's thundering like a bitch here so I am off for awhile.
Everyone leave a comment of the awesome deal you got this week somewhere.

I know SonyaAnn bought every pack of bacon in a 3 state area last week for a ridiculously small cost!
I want to know when she is inviting me over for BLTs!?!? Mmmmmmm....bacon.......

My Potty Dave....The Memories of My Childhood

As I may have mentioned before, that as a young child, I did not receive much encouragement or positive reinforcement from the adults in my life.  This was especially true of the adult men in my life.

For various reasons, my father was unavailable, both physically and emotionally to me.
My brothers, though not grown, were much older than 1, so I viewed them as 'nearly adults'.  And being that they were so much older, they wanted nothing to do with my little girl self, unless they were forced to.  I had the distinction of being not only a good part younger than either of them, but the double whammy of being of the opposite sex too, so they could not doubly relate to me and my world.
We were of two galaxies,  following completely different paths in our universe, made up of our parents and extended family.

Moving onto the older males in my young life to find some positive attention.....

There was my mother's father.  While I am sure he loved me, about the time I came along, he was pretty beat down by life.  He had a hard life, starting in his childhood back in the hill country of south central Virginia at the beginning of the 20th century.  He was once upon a time a creative soul who tried many many ways to eek out a living to support his family.  But his love of the bottle won out in the end every time.  He was creative and talented at music and carpentry and could build most anything without laying pen to paper first.  But he was a weak man who loved his wife fiercely but relied upon her to keep their world spinning.

My great grandfathers on my mother's side, one had long passed on before I was even a twinkle in my parent's eyes and the other died 20 days before I turned two years.  My mother had no brothers.  She did have 10 Uncles herself(6 through her mom, 4 through her dad), plus the 7 other Uncles that her Aunts had brought into the family by marriage.  But they either all lived a 5 hours drive away back in the country or in exotic cities out of state.
My father had 1 sister who married but they lived in Massachusetts so there was little opportunity for connection with "my" only Uncle.

So there was my father's father.  My grandmother's husband.
I did not learn until well after his death in 1966, when I was 7, that he was NOT my 'real' grandfather.

I had suspected that he was an imposter when I began to notice things like last names and realized that his and Granny's last name, PAUL, was not the same as my father and our last name, BOWMAN.
I guess I was around 9 or 10 before I asked it out loud and was told that GrandPoppy was Granny's 2nd husband.  The first GrandPoppy had died they all said and Granny married again when my father was a teenager.

And in this unlikely man I found some one who truly made me feel that I was "smart, kind and important" to quote a certain film.
Let me tell you about this man named David Noll Paul.

That's my Granny with her husband Mr. Paul and from left to right my oldest brother, my other older brother and Mr. Paul is holding me.  I am just past my 1st birthday in that photo.  We are standing on the front porch of their house.

My grandmother married him sometime between 1942 and 1949.  If I ever find the marriage certificate I'll be able confirm the date.  For now I have to go from stories told to me and rumors and the few photos I have of them.  I can say for sure that they were married in late 1949 since he is in a Christmas tree photo with my grandmother and her 2 kids and they are "Mr & Mrs Paul" in the notes on the photo.

Here is the only photo I have of them alone together.  It is dated 1956.  My grandmother would have been 47 and her husband 54 at that time.

All I knew as a kid is that he had been 'family' since before I was born so I hadn't known life without him.

Dave Paul was a  man's man.  He had a gruff, rough manner.  He didn't talk much but when he did have something to say it was usually yelled and he used naughty words.  He ate with gusto and loved Mrs. Fanning's bread and butter pickles with his sandwiches.  He drank beer too and even during the day! He would fall asleep in his easy chair and snore as loud as a thunderstorm. He smoked cigars(short stubby ones he called stogies)and he had lots of tattoos.....things like ships, hearts and hula girls down his arms and on his chest.
He had a heavy footfall when he walked about the house.  He didn't visit at our house often but we would visit at Granny's house.  There was always a chance that he wouldn't be there.
Because he worked on a boat.
A tug boat to be exact.
He was sometimes out to sea on a job.  Other times he worked in the harbor nearby or was home on a furlough.
He helped build this in the early 1960's....

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

He worked on a fleet of tugs that brought supplies, workers, etc. out onto the bay to work on this structure.

My grandmother was his first wife.  I am curious as to how they ever met and got together.  I can't comprehend that these two people ever had the occasion to move in the same social circles!
But then again, my Grandmother was a big fan of  "colorful" language so they did have THAT in common.

He was a confirmed bachelor until he married my grandmother.
And I learned from my mother, after I was grown, that he hated children.
And if there was a stronger word than hate, THAT would be how he felt about children.

He never had any of his own kids, well, at least none he ever knew about. ;-)
He couldn't stand to be around little kids at all.  He hardly had anything to do with my older brothers.
He didn't play with them, he didn't take them places. If my mother went to visit my Grandmother with her 2 boys, Dave Paul would conveniently have to leave the house for something or go take a nap.
Children were things to be endured and put up with and he wanted no part of being a Grandpa.

He detested kids....until I was born.
He thought the sun rose and set with me!
My brothers?   They hardly existed, but me?
When I was born, I became the center of the universe as far as he was concerned.

I called this man "Potty Dave".  I couldn't say Grand Poppy so it came out Potty.  My attempts at saying his name could have sounded like Shit Face, he still would have been wrapped around my little finger.

Before I started school, my mother would sometimes have my Granny babysit me during the day a couple of times a week, as she worked at my father's office when he was starting his own firm.  My brother's were in school so I spent quite a few days and evenings with my Granny Paul and Potty Dave.  Granny watched her soap operas during the day and we'd watch Potty Dave's boxing on the Philco TV at night.  Sometimes Granny would take me with her to play Bingo.  She was a serious Bingo shark and had a different hall each night figured out where she could go play.  She didn't discriminate between the Catholics, the Episcopalians, the Rotary Club, the Jewish Community Center or the Policeman's Benevolent Society.

Sometimes when my family came over to the Grandparents' house, Potty Dave would ask my mom and I to drive to the harbor with him if it was during a work day.  He would take us onto the tugboat to 'show me off' to his shipmates.  He did this until I started school.  He'd carry me on the tug and my mom said I would smile and bat my eyelashes at all those burly men and they would melt at my feet during silly things to get me to laugh.  When I was a little older and could walk and sing, I'd perform songs for them.
Mom also said I learned quick to give the ship's cook (yes, they called him "Cookie"), extra attention so he would bring up cookies and treats for me to eat from the galley.
I guess thinking about it now, this was my first audience and I was honing my acting skills from almost birth.  If I had stuck with it, I'd be a big star writing my memoirs and could entitle it "It All Started Aboard a Tug Boat!".
And I do actually have some faint memories of these trips to the tugboat from about the age of 3 onward.

Other times, we could visit my Granny Paul's house and I'd sneak over to Potty Dave and ask him if he wanted to go for a ride.
This was our 'code' for "do you want to take me to the candy store and buy me some candy?".
He'd ask my mother if it was ok to take me out in the car and we'd head up to the 7-11 for some Turkish Taffy, candy cigarettes, Mary Janes or lollipops.  I'd come back with a big paper bag in my hand and nothing for my brothers.
One of the perks of being little and having a fan, even if you aren't a pretty girl.

Me and Potty Dave-I'm 1.5 years old  This is the only photo I have of  him with me alone.   I wish I had that car now!

I also remember after I started school and we were working on learning to read.  We had those "Fun with Dick & Jane" books and I had mastered the first part of the book.
My mother dialed the phone so I could call Potty Dave to ask if he wanted to listen to me read to him.
I guess I was a show off even at 6 years old. lol

Of course he said ok and I sat and read the part of the book I had learned over and over again to him.
My mother said she came into the living room about 45 minutes after she had dialed the phone for me and I was still reading to him from that book.
And he was still on the line, patiently listening to Dick and Jane and Spot again and again and again.

Oh, to have someone as wonderful as this in your life!  I can't tell you how it makes my heart sing even now to remember him.
The most unlikely adult in my small world as a child who thought I was worth attention and time!
We really had a connection.

No one knows if it would have lasted or if when I grew that he would think of me as just another rotten kid.  We never got the chance to find out as he died unexpectedly in 1966 when I was 7.  I still remember my father coming to school in the middle of the day and taking me out of 1st grade.
Potty Dave died on a ship out to sea in the Middle East.
There was a funeral....I don't recall going to it.
There was a lot of crying by my Granny for awhile but then life went on.

When I actually started paying to be a member of Ancestry.com I went searching for my Potty Dave there.
He isn't part of our family by blood, but he is one of the more precious people to me over  a big slew of the blood related kin.
You can read about what I found out about his ancestors HERE.

Anyway, among the records I found was one that cleared up the mystery surrounding Potty Dave's death.
I found his "Report of The Death of an American Citizen" Form.

It was filled out by the American Consulate in Port Said, United Arab Republic. *Egypt and Syria formed the  U.A.R. in 1958.  In 1961 Syria left the union but Egypt was still referred to as the UAR until 1971.*

He was working for the Curtis Bay Towing Company out of Norfolk, VA, aboard the TUG LAMBERT POINT. He was taken off the tug shortly before transit of the Suez Canal, meaning the tug was in the Mediterranean Sea waiting for their turn through the canal.
Cause of death.....coronary thrombosis....a massive heart attack.
March 21, 1966.
He was 63 years old.

All I know is that his death left a hole in my young life.
And my world was forever changed and not for the better.

This is my love letter to a dear precious man I knew as a young child.
I still miss him to this day.

$20K Savings Challenge Report for JULY 2012

Ok, here is my JULY Savings Challenge Update post for 2012.
This post is NOT about bragging or showing off.  It's just what we are able to save given our income and being able to hang tough against "unconscious" spending.

Just to update, My Savings Goal for the Year in 2012 is $20,000.  It's well below what I've saved in previous years I know.  But we also have a goal of paying for 4 home improvement projects at Chez Sluggy this year.  We plan on cash-flowing these projects with the additional money we save and/or our income tax refund.
Our background info--We are a family of 5(kids are 21-16)with one living away from home.  We have 2 dogs. We own 3 cars at present and live in/own free & clear a 4 bedroom house in a small town.

On to the July report.....

I have posted my JULY End of Month $20K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the side bar to your right for the specific numbers.

I have 2 goals each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $1,666.67.

I have to report that we finished up July in the black!
The extra cash amount we ended the month of July with?.......$1641.83.

Income
We had $1639.44 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.
Add in $2.39 in interest income(HAHAHAHAHA!) and  you get a total of $1641.83.

Outgo
The usual along with a couple of large irregular bills......1 expected and 1 out of the ordinary.
As for the expenses this July......

HERE are the GOOD THINGS
* The water bill decreased by $30+.
* The electric bill decreased by $21+.
* The credit card bill decreased by $702.
* The cash withdrawals went down $1170.....even with that they were high!

HERE are the BAD THINGS

*  Home owner's insurance was due, but expected. $596.
*  Bill came in for the Minivan from last month's repairs. $1496.68.

The Food Budget costs for JULY are in another post, which is located HERE.

YEAR-TO-DATE GRAND TOTAL.....
With 7 month behind us, our Savings Grand Total for 2012 is $15,613.23.
We missed our monthly goal in July by $24.84. Since June's savings but us ahead for the year, I am not sweating a shortfall of $25 in July.
With 7 months done, we should be at $11,666.69  saved for the year, so we are $3946.54 ahead for the year as of now!

In the next 2 months we have largish irregular expenses coming due.
August is semi-annual car insurance at about $1500.
September is school taxes about another $1950.

They are irregular because they don't come every month....like the water or electric bill.  But two things about irregular bills--
1.They are usually for large amounts(due to the fact that they don't come round every month).
2. You KNOW THEY ARE COMING!  Yep, every year....so don't stick your head in the sand and ignore them.  Plan for them. Set a 12th of their amount aside each month so that when the due date rolls around, you have the money saved up to pay them in full.

We may actually get a break with our car insurance.  #1 Son is buying himself a car.  Since it will be in his name, he will need to have his own insurance policy, therefore we can have him taken off of our policy.  We tired to tell him that with our driving records, ages and the fact we get multiple discounts on our coverage, he's better off putting the car in our name and staying on our policy, and just paying us the extra it costs us to cover him and his car.
But 21 year old men want to feel virile and independent I guess, and paying through the nose for their own policy must be a testosterone inducing manly thing.
But what do I know....... ;-)

At this point, I need to come up with $4386.77 for the rest of the year to make my $20K goal.  This breaks down to $877.35 per month for the next 5 months.

As for a look ahead at AUGUST.....
* Car insurance due.
* No celebrations here, no parties, just Boring McBorington at Chez Sluggy.

So how was your July financially?
Did you spend less than you made?
Did you stay within your budget or not?
How much did you save in July?
Even if it doesn't look like a lot of money, figure out what percentage of your income you saved.  You might feel that it's a more substantial amount in those terms!
We saved 28.74% of our take home income in July.  My goal is to shoot for 50% each month. If we hadn't had that car repair bill, we could have achieved saving 55% of the take-home income.
Dang that car repair bill! lol

Leave a comment and share with us what you did with your money, both the good and not-so good.
Did you have debt you were able to pay on?
Did you pay off a car, a house or a credit card?
Did something financial blow up on you last month?
What are you doing financially to change your life?

If you posted your financial progress on your own blog, leave a link in the comments so we can go check you out too!

My Crush is Gone

I was saddened to hear this morning that composer Marvin Hamlisch had died at 68.

He was a much lauded American composer.  He is only one of two people who have ever been awarded Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and a Tony Award, as well as the Pulitzer Prize.(Richard Rodgers was the other person.)  Marvin also won 2 Golden Globe Awards.

If you went to the movies you may not recognize his name but you'd recognize his work.
Like this one.....

Or this one.....

Or follow this LINK to a medley of his hits.

But this is how I remember Marvin.....

Back in 1975, when I was a 16 year old high school student who was working toward a career in the Theater and dreamed of making it to Broadway, Marvin Hamlisch was a god.
"A Chorus Line" had hit the boards and it was the biggest thing in the Art World.  It single handedly revitalized a dying Musical Theater industry.

Marvin Hamlisch was everywhere in the media.  A constant guest on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show along with every other talk-type show.

He was twice my age but I thought he was about the sexiest thing on two legs.  I guess my "type" of man at 16 was an older Jewish geeky looking man with glasses and an unglamorous name.

But I'll tell you, there is nothing sexier about a man as what is between his ears.
This is my words of wisdom for all you young people out there who lust after all those hard bodied hotties.

This man was talented!  From what I ever saw, he was genuine and a class act.  He also had a great sense of humor.

And it didn't hurt that he looked mighty fine in a tux back in the day.....

Marvin occupied many a nightime dream of my 16 year old self.
I know this is too much information but I had this recurring dream that I went to New York and auditioned for a show and Marvin was playing piano accompaniment for the auditioners, including me.
He saw and heard me and fell in love with me, whisking me away into his world of theater, art, and the New York society world and we would have a torrid love affair.

I guess you know that things didn't quite work out that way for me. ;-)

Here's an interview with Marvin about his Audition at 6 to Julliard Music School.

And here is some more Marvin love in an interview I found online. (It's about a 1/2 hour long, but worth it if you have the time.)

R.I.P. Mr. Marvin Hamlisch

It Changed My Life!.....Seriously.....

Dear Anonymous Blog Writer Who I Follow & Read,

I am so glad you decided to go to a Blogging Conference.
Really....I am!
I hope you had a blast.
And I already know that you did!

Because, between me and you, THAT is the point of attending a Blogging Conference.
Spending all that money to spend a long weekend away from home with other Bloggers is just an excuse for having a party.
The only people who actually make money from Blogging Conferences are the people who are in the business of setting up and running conferences.

I know, I know.....you will defend your choice to go by saying that it's "important" for your Blog.....
That you are learning so much from your fellow Bloggers......
That you are "connecting" with corporations......
That you are getting "your brand" out there for all to see.....
That you are treating your blog as a "business".....

But let's get real here.
Unless your blog really is a "business"......meaning you make enough income off of it to support yourself.
Unless you really learn something that will benefit me as your reader?
You are going on vacation.

I really don't care that much about your conference experience.
I don't want to hear how you agonized over every article of clothing you brought to find the perfect ensemble so you could go whore yourself for swag or get stinking drunk with your bloggy friends at the after party in the hotel suite.

I don't want to hear about the ridiculous spread of food and the ice carvings.
I don't want to hear about the corporate booths full of mousepads, t-shirts, samples of products, hats, etc. etc. etc. and how much flirting, smiling, cleavage, fake enthusiasm & interest, etc. you had to show those corporate stooges in order to haul a suitcase home bulging with freebies that just add to the materialistic waste stream we are already drowning in in this country.

Losing your dignity over a sample free roll of Charmin is NOT empowering to women.

Constant Tweets for 3 days and multiple posts about how FABULOUS it is to be there and LOOK AT ME! in Yet another Photograph with these other tipsy, smiling Bloggers just makes me want to hurl and block you into eternity.

So next time........and I DO KNOW there will be a next time because you are an attention junkie.......go spend your money(as long as you aren't in debt and you don't pay for the trip with credit)and have a great time!
When you get home, write ONE POST complete with links, photographs and your profound words about how this 3 Days have "changed my life".
One Post.
So that if I don't give a rat's ass about Blogging Parties I can easily scroll past it and we can get on with our online relationship.

Sincerely,

Your Reader(for now)

Food Spending August Week 1 & Meal Planning Week 2

Ain't it the truth.....

*****************************
And here is the "meal plan" that actually happened last week.....

Sunday--BBQ Chicken, Collard Greens
Monday--Hamburger Helper type casserole, Pickles
Tuesday--Leftovers/Fend For Yourself
Wednesday--Subway Sandwiches
Thursday--KFC, Mashed Potatoes, Coleslaw, Biscuits
Friday--Leftovers/Fend For Yourself
Saturday--Fried Fish, Yellow Squash, Coleslaw
I cooked 3 meals at home last week.  Hubs and I got a sandwich on Wed. since no one else was home, I didn't see the point of cooking a big meal in the heat.  KFC was our splurge/eating out for the week.  It gave us 2 full meals worth for $21.
#2 Son wasn't home for dinner Mon.-Fri. due to band.

The weekly food spending was $119.98 done in 2 trips to Weis and 1 trip to the local Shursave Market. I had a $5 WYS $50 Q for Shursave so I bought ice cream, milk, carrots, 2 types of fruit, deli meat, 2 loaves of bread, tartar sauce, 6 jars of spaghetti sauce, 6 bottles of salad dressing and 2 boxes of tea bags.
The last few items were part of a Spend $20/Get $7 Catalina Q Unilever Deal.  The 2 trips to Weis to do the Purina Dog Food and the Nestle Deals.   The Purina Deal didn't produce the Catalina so I got a $10 gift card which I promptly forgot to use for the Nestle Deal. doh!  I did receive the $5 Cat for the Nestle Deal.  Between the 2 stores I have $12 in Cats and a $10 Gift Card to spend on future free food in the coming weeks.
Besides the Cat Deals at Weis I picked up some cheap chicken cutlets, pork ribs, some steaks and some reduced bakery muffins.

I have $280.02 left of my $400 food budget for August.

Going into the new week I have the following leftovers to use up......nothing at all.

***********************

This week's menu.....
Sunday--Chicken Parmesan, Spaghetti, Green Beans
Monday--Meatloaf, Squash Casserole
Tuesday--Tuna Helper, Tossed Salad
Wednesday--Chicken in the Crockpot, Stir-fry Veggies
Thursday--Tacos or Taco Salad
Friday--Pizza, Salad
Saturday--Leftovers
I have squash and green beans to use from the garden this week.
We are suppose to have some cooler days this week so I'll be turning on the oven 1 or 2 nights(2 nights if I make a homemade pizza instead of using one of these gift cards I have for a couple of pizza places around here).  I'll make enough meatloaf for leftovers.
What I need to buy this week to serve this menu?..... lettuce.  Also more lunch  meat, fruit, eggs, yogurt and milk for non-dinner needs.   This should be a light week for groceries.  I'm figuring $30 for all.

So what's on deck for your menu this week?

"Finally Frugal and Happy" Blog & Judy UPDATE

I finally heard back from Judy last night via email.
She is ok first off.  She isn't sick or anything.

She IS dealing with some "personal family issues" which necessitated her shutting down her blog again.
I'm not at liberty to go into the details but trust me, she had to!

Between work and these personal issues she hasn't even had time to bop around and read/comment on the blog of anyone else either.
Is her blog gone for good?......not sure.
This is just how it is with Judy for now.

If anyone wishes to contact her, feel free to email me a message and I'll send it on, or leave a comment on this post and I'll tell her to get her rear over here and read them.

It saddens me and makes me angry to see her going through the crap she told me about that I can't share.

I think Judy could use a little encouragement for all of us right about now so leave her some love if ya can!

Guess Where I Went Today?

If you answered Rite-Aid, you'd be RIGHT!lol

Actually I went yesterday afternoon too.
I went in on Friday afternoon with $14 in +Ups and used my Wellness card......

I'm do this quickly and not bore you with the intimate details because most of these deals ended Saturday night.

This lot of stuff cost me $.77 on my gift card after Qs/sales and used $5 in +Up Rewards.  I received $15 in +Up Rewards back(2 x $2 Pantene, $3 WYB Crest Rinse, $4 StingEase Max, 2 x $2 Oral-B Power Toothbrushes).  The Reach toothbrushes also counted $8 toward the J&J Spend $30/Get $10 +Ups Deal, so I just have to spend another $22 to get that $10 reward.

Used $5 +Ups, Got $15.....$14 going in - $5=$9 + $15=$24 +Ups.

Next Transaction was on BIL's card.....

This lot of stuff cost me $1.91 on my gift card after Qs/sales and used $16 +Up Rewards.  I received $26 in +Up Rewards back(2 x $3 Nivea Body Wash-part of the Gillette BW Deal, $10 Monthly WYB $20 Nivea, 2 x $2 Pantene, 2 x $2 Oral-B Power Toothbrushes, $2 WYB 3 $1 Toothpastes).

Started with $24+Ups - $16+Ups=$8+Ups + $26+Ups=$34+Ups.

Back to my card again and I bought this stuff.....

This lot of stuff cost me $.45 on my gift card after Qs/sales and used $6 in +Up Rewards.  I received $16 in +Up Rewards back(2 x $3 Oral-B Toothpaste, $10 WYB $30 J&J Deal).

Started with $34+Ups - $6+Ups=$28+Ups + $16+Ups=$44+Ups

And one more transaction on my Card again......

I spent $.34 on my gift card and Qs/sales and used $10 in +Up Rewards.  I received $13 in +Up Rewards back($3 Crest Rinse, $5 Lanacane, $1 Lanacane-a monthly maybe?, $4 Revlon WYB 2 beauty tools).

Started with $44+Ups - $10+Ups=$34+Ups + $13+Ups=$47+Up Rewards.
The Revlon tools qualified for a $2 Single Check Rebate as well.

So to recap, I put $3.47  of Out of Pocket expenses on my free gift card, brought home $244.34 worth of toiletries, grew my +Up Rewards from $14 to $47 and Rite-Aid is sending me a $2 cash rebate also.

I made a few mistakes this past week running my Deals at Rite-Aid but all in all?.....I was tearing it UP at Rite-Aid. ;-)

And I did a lot of this on Saturday......still product in the stores at the end of the week for a change.  I gave my fellow shoppers plenty of opportunity to get these deals this week, before I swept in and finished my shopping off on Sat. afternoon.   I detest shelf clearing but if it's 4pm on Saturday and the sale ends on Sat. night at 9pm, I will take the last 2 of something at that point......or maybe get a raincheck. ;-)

No excuse for dirty hair or teeth in this house now.....!

August Grand Totals so far this month.....

Out Of Pocket....$0  cash
Value of items bought....$244.34
Savings Rate of  100%

What's Growing in Sluggy's Yard?

Well the first obvious answer to this question is weeds.  *rimshot*

Since we finally got lots of rain last week, the plants are perking up around here.
And that includes the plants I want to grow AND the ones I don't want, the weeds.

We had to do some more bean picking this past weekend.....

We'll be getting another mess o' beans at least from these plants before they are done.  This variety is called Gold Rush and they are an early variety.

After picking beans, I had Hubs thin my Collard Plants.  We never thinned them after they came up and they are really going wild, so it was way past time to reign them in.  Here is what he pulled up....

They could have stood even more thinning.
Here is what I harvested after cutting the leaves off....
They overfilled my ginormously large colander.
After a nice cold soaking bath with salt in the kitchen sink(coarse salt helps remove the dirt), here is what went into the pot with a small portion of salt pork(cut into lardons).  I also season with freshly cracked pepper and a small amount of sugar(especially if the greens are picked before the first frost as they tend to be bitter and this cuts the bitterness).

I didn't have to remove many of the spines, as the leaves were so young that the spines weren't tough and large.

We ate the Collards with some Barbecue Chicken last Sunday night.  I forgot to get a photo of the finished product.....*burp*. hehehe

While the yellow bean plants on one side of the bed have been fruitful, the vine beans on the other side have been not so much.
Ok, I take that statement back.
These plants have not yielded a single dang blasted bean....yet!
But the vines?
Oh, they are doing a mighty fine impersonation of Kudzu!
And if you are a Yankee or a West Coaster, this is what Kudzu looks like....

Let's just say it is a rather "prolific" weed that grows quickly and swallows up anything in it's path.
In the Summer down South, you don't leave your windows open at night for fear that the Kudzu will come into your home and strangle you in your sleep.lol

Here's what the backside of the garden bed from the deck view looks like.....

They have topped the deck railing and are growing back down again behind the deck box onto the deck.
Now do you see the resemblance to Kudzu?......

And on the end they have overtaken the bird feeder pole and are about to consume my wind chimes.

Totally amazingly lush plants but no blooms yet, let alone actual baby green beans.

So what is growing in your yard this Summer?

Larry Is My Boy!

I haven't said anything about the whole Chik-Fil-A Brew-ha-ha......until now...... ;-)

I think Larry Winget has hit the nail on the head on this whole issue.
Give him a listen.....

Now tell me what you think.

I don't track Rite-Aid's +Ups here, nor CVS's ECBs & Walgreen's RRs. They will be included when used on purchases under "Coupons".   I'll keep track of what rebates are received monthly.  Rebate money/gift cards will be considered 'income' & will go into the Food/Toiletries budget, offsetting the Out of Pocket. Cash will go immediately into the Budget kitty, while Gift Cards will be calculated in when spent.

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....

I went into July with $300 budgeted for food/toiletries for the month.  I was able to stay substantially below that amount.
Though I didn't actively coupon in July I was still able to get close to my dream goal of a 75% savings rate.  This was mostly due to paying next to nothing for what I bought at Rite-Aid and for "buying" a substantial number of items at Rite-Aid in July. It's not the way I wanted to hit the mark but I'll take it. lol

I didn't buy many meats this month, mostly produce/fruit, bread products and some dairy.  The only stocking up I did was on cream cheese, 100% juices and drinks for #2 Son for band camp.
LOOKING AHEAD TO AUGUST....

I will be setting my food budget back to $400 for August.  #2 Son is home again.  #1 Son will also be coming home mid month for a week or so.  Between the 2 of them, I'll need to buy more groceries than last month.  I also need to stock up on dog kibble and at the end of the month restock on meats and there will be fresh produce for cheap to be frozen.

We ate down the freezer stock a good deal in July and I'll continue to eat it down in August so I can clean it out and restock later in August.
How did you do in July with your Food Budget?
Did you stick to it?
Did you find any good rock bottom prices to stock up on groceries?
