It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.....For Buying Restaurant Gift Cards!

Like the old Christmas tune says.....

But it's also the most wonderful time of the year to buy Restaurant Gift Cards!

Around the Holidays, restaurant chains(as well as some local restaurants-check out your local places too!)offer bonuses for purchasing gift cards to their locations.
They want to get in on some of the money you are spending on Holiday gifts just like all those retail merchants do.

But I buy restaurant gift cards at Christmas time for my OWN use.
But ONLY those chains that are offering bonus incentives on a purchase.
Usually it's a $5 bonus gift card when you purchase a $25 or so gift card.
Sometimes it's a free item instead for a gift card purchase or a store "reward" at a grocery store or a drugstore.

This is the time of year, with the spare cash I have sitting around-NEVER go into debt or put these kind of purchases on a credit card that you can NOT pay off in January to do this!!-I load up on restaurant gift cards to places we typically go out to eat at during the year.
My list of local places includes Lone Star, Bob Evans, Logan's, Red Robin, TGI Friday's and now and again Red Lobster.

Just 2 weeks ago I bought $100 in restaurant gift cards at Rite-Aid, as they were giving a +Up Rewards bonus($12 in free script good at Rite-Aid).  So I bought gift cards to spend at restaurants I would eat at anyway in the coming year and I got $12 worth of free toiletries/HBA/food at Rite-Aid.

While out Christmas shopping together, Hubs and I went to Bob Evans for a quick and filling meal.
I saw that they were offering an incentive to buy gift cards and I bit.....

Here's the deal.....
Purchase $30 in Bob Evans gift cards(can be 1 Card for $30 or multiple cards totaling $30).
Get a Coupon Book with $20 in Bonus Savings
AND get a box of 6 Sugar Cookies

Usually I wouldn't be too thrilled with a deal like this but I checked the Coupon Book out before I plunked down the cash....

1 x BOGO Adult Entrée Q wyb an adult entree
1 x $3 off $10 Purchase Q on meals
1 x Free Kid's Entrée wyb an adult entrée
1 x Free Slice of Pie wyb an adult entrée

You can use these coupons when you eat at Bob's and then pay with your gift card.  It's actually more than $20 worth of freebies/discounts.  We don't have any kids for the Kid Entrée Q but this restaurant will let me use it on an adult who wants a kid's entrée.  Sometimes when we go I only want a small portion so this works for us.

Plus you also get these Qs in the booklet for Bob Evans products at the grocers...

These didn't inspire me much as I don't buy frozen premade foods much(frozen mashed potatoes....really??lol).
But I might use that sausage meats one.

Just be aware that the Coupon Booklet coupons good in the restaurants expire on 2/28/14, which gives you just over 2 months to redeem them.
The coupons for the grocery store foods are good until 3/31/14.
I might have purchased more than $60 worth of gift cards if these restaurant coupons didn't expire the end of February.  Jan and Feb. the weather is touch & go here so I'll have my hands full getting to Bob's enough times to use those 2 sets of Qs I got.

And how awesome is it that I have a dozen Christmas cookies now and I didn't have to bake!? lolz

Now I have to get over to Lone Star Steak House and pick up some gift cards for there before Christmas.

Do you buy gift cards in December to use throughout the following year because they offer incentives during the Christmas season?

This Week on The Dining Table

The "Christmas is only 8 Days Away and I am finally READY!" Edition.......

Everything is wrapped and under the tree except for 1 last minute order from Kohl's which is suppose to get here by Dec. 24th but isn't necessarily Christmas presents(underwear and summer clothing-great clearance deals on that now!)but if it arrives in time I'll wrap it and put under the tree.

On to the Meal Planning.
Here is what was planned last week--

Sunday--used leftover Fried Chicken to make Lemon Pepper Chicken w/Zuke, Rice
Monday--finish the Leftovers Stuffed Shells, Salad
Tuesday--Dinner out w/a gift certificate(free)
Wednesday--Meatloaf, Squash Casserole, Asparagus
Thursday--Roasted Chicken(maybe w/BBQ sauce), steamed Broccoli, roasted Sweet Potatoes
Friday--Leftovers Medley
Saturday--No Clue yet-options of leftovers, lasagna from freezer or pizza take-out(w/gift cert.)

Well we ate everything listed except for Sweet Potatoes as I didn't get to the store until Friday.   Leftovers moved from Friday to Saturday and I bought a pizza at Weis on Friday for dinner that evening.

As for the food spending last week....
There was 1 trip to the grocery store & 2 trips to Rite-Aid and I spent a grand total of $55.35(including my Rite-Aid trips at $2.23)on $234.01 worth of groceries/toiletries at 2 different stores.  We are at $184.95 spent on $590.26 worth of groceries/toiletries for December so far.
14 days left in the month and $115.05 left in the food budget(if I want to come in under $300 this month instead of the usual $400).

I am still hopeful I can pull off a $300 food month.  The freezer is still good on various proteins and some frozen lasagna, ravioli and crab cakes so I think we can pull this off, as long as I stay out of the grocery store and am not tempted to go hog wild right before Christmas!  Oh, those marketers are pulling out all the stops to get us to spend, spend, SPEND the next week or so!  Just make a list of NEEDS, get in and get out quick to avoid the impulse spending.
Staying out of the stores will be easy for me this week since #2 Son needs my car most of the week while his is being repaired.
Best to stay outta the stores.....unless of course, you have +Up Rewards to use up at Rite-Aid that is...... ;-)

Leftovers going into this week--some of that Roasted Chicken I cooked up, leftover spaghetti sauce from the Stuffed Shells I made and Zucchini and Rice.  That is about it this week.

Here's this week's meal plan---

Sunday--Dinner Out after some Holiday shopping w/Hubs at Bob Evans
Monday--Chicken and Dumplings(to use up the rest of that chicken & milk about to expire)
Tuesday--Ravioli & Sauce(use up leftover sauce), Green Salad
Wednesday--Chicken Fried Steak(I'll have something else), Mashed Potatoes, Veggie Medley
Thursday--Something Inexpensive Out after #2 Son's Christmas Concert(the last one we ever have to attend!lol)
Friday--Shrimp Burgers on rolls, Deviled Eggs, Green Beans
Saturday--Spaghetti and Meatballs, Spinach Salad

What I need to purchase for this menu?....... biscuit dough.  I picked up salad greens, rolls, shrimp burgers last week.  Have the CFS, taters, meatballs(in the freezer)and pasta already.
Since I have little that needs buying for this menu, I'll check out any loss leaders offered in the stores this week and start constructing next week's menu around those and what I have already here.  With $115.05 left in the food budget for December, I'll try to stay at or under $40 this week for foods that will be consumed next week.  Does that make any sense to anyone? lolz

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Summer Road Trip of 2013....Day Four-We Aren't in PA(or For That Matter Chicago Land)Anymore Dorothy!

Here's my Holiday Treat for y'all.....another installment of my Road Trip of 2013.
Y'all must have all been very good this year to deserve this.  ;-)

**********************************************

We left Sonya Ann's house on Friday morning around 10am.  At least that's when I recall being able to focus again after the previous night's adventures.  *snort*

On the way out of town, Hubs and I stopped at the local liquor store to check out what goodies we could find that we can't find around home, as far as "adult beverages" go.

I was browsing over by the regional wines when I heard a loud voice say, "Will ya look at all these alcoholics in the liquor store first thing in the morning!??, or something to that effect.
I spun around and it was Sonya Ann!

Evidently I had forgotten to pack the present she gave me when we were loading the car up so she jumped in the car to try to catch us before we left town.....she knew we were making this stop before hitting the road to southern IL.
At least that's what Sonya said. ;-)
I think SA just couldn't bear the thought of me leaving and was getting all stalker-ish on us.

You decide which..... ;-)

Anyway, we hugged again and she was gone in a flash and I was holding a basket of homemade beauty products she had made just for little ol' me.

I lost the basket she presented these to me in somewhere before I got home......no, rather I gave it away to a hotel maid who had admired it and we had NO room in the trunk for anything at that point, so I gave it to the maid along with her tip.  It made her day. 8-)

Anyway, back to my presents--Sonya Ann made this stuff.......

From bottom to top, there is a wet body scrub(smells like vanilla), a dry white scrub(for my face?  Hope so cuz that's where it went. lol), a lotion with some kind of butter(coconut or shea or ?), and the top is a tiny container of lip stuff.

Yes, I am such a "girlie girl" indeed that I probably got this wrong and don't know what to call some of it.
But I DO know that the yellow tub of stuff had some kind of organic/natural oil or butter in it because when it got left in a car trunk when we got to the South in AUGUST, it turned to organic/natural oil DRINK.  8-)
Yes, I am very bright that way......

And I love this little pot/container she put handmade chap stick in!  It's on a chain that you can put on your key ring or hook to something else so you don't LOSE IT.
Ask me how I know that.

Now back to the narrative......
After an HOUR! lol in the liquor store, we paid and proceeded to cram all our liquid goodies into the trunk of the rental car and then we were outta there!
Hey, I was buying Christmas gifts among all that booze so don't judge me.  ;-)

We had a couple of hours drive through mostly tiny towns on back roads until we hit Rockford.

Here's one high point of this part of the drive......

The flag obscured the "V" and part of the "A" in the sign for the town of HARVARD.

Embiggen this photo to see the road sign.

Now I can tell people that yes, I went to Harvard.  ;-)

Then we stopped for gas before we left that town and I snapped this photo of the convenience store window.  We are DEFINITELY not out East anymore.......look at what they call soda here.......

And then we drove and drove and drove down through the middle of Illinois basically.  So flat and being August, the scenery didn't change much.   Lot of shots of fields of corn(plus a few more crops)out my window, until we were about an hour away from our stop for the day.
Then the view changed a bit.......

Crops of giant windmills amidst the corn!  I guess it makes sense though if you have a flat topographical area and strong winds come whipping through at various times of the year, you try to harness that energy by building windmill farms.

It was just freaky for me to see this multitude of mills.  The only other mills I've ever seen at home are ones up on a mountain ridge, viewed from a distance.  I've never seen any so close to the highway.  You'd come around a bend and Bingo!.....there would be a windmill right near the road and it would seem as if you were going to drive right up to it's base on a few of them.
Just a bit freaky to me.

Sometime after 1pm, we made it to our first destination of the day, a small town in central Illinois called Mendota.
Another water tower for my collection.......

The meeting place was a local restaurant.
And I snapped this photo as 2 friends walked into my trap, er......the building......

We were here in Mendota, IL to meet two online friends, whom I have known since we were all members of an online Beanie Babies/Attic Treasures group.

Here's my short video while we dined on the restaurant's Friday Special, FISH SANDWICHES.

I have a fish sandwich phobia ever since about 2005 and a fateful lunch while on the way to take the kids to Summer camp.

I can't remember what type of white fish these were, do you recall Robin & Pam?, but they were most excellent!  This lunch special was such a deal too, it even came with a bowl of clam chowder.
And we all ordered it.
Update....Robin informed me that it was Walleye.  Hey, somebody actual READS this stuff! lol

And yes, I actually took pictures of everyone's plate for posterity.  ;-)

Dan's plate......

My plate.....

Robin's plate......

Pam's plate......hey!, it looks like she got a bigger piece than the rest of us........where do I complain the management??.........

It was a real nice visit.  We just sort of started talking and didn't stop, like we were old friends....which is what we were/are.....only online.

It was so nice to meet them both and just the tonic I needed before heading to the Hubs sister's town to go to a wedding  & reception where I knew exactly 2 people and I was married to one of those. ;-)

Robin, who is always doing nice things for people, had presents for me.
I "heart" presents.
Hey!, who doesn't like presents, right?

You might say I am a "presents 'ho"......at least it seemed like it on this trip! lol

And here is what I "gots".....

A very cool crocheted hat.
Yes, I am now the proud owner of my very own MINION HAT!
And don't even THINK, now that the weather is cold, I don't wear this out in public.
Yes, I am a 54 year old women......what of it?
So eat your heart out you don't have one Holly Arcure.

It even matched my dress.
I am such an attention 'ho too evidently.......

Robin makes and sells these hats.
I don't even think she uses a pattern.  She thinks of something or sees a picture and comes up with designs in her head and just starts making them.
She posted lots of different ones on Facebook last year.....Angry Birds, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sports Team colors and I can't remember any others right now, but she's done lots of different ones.

If anyone needs a hat, drop me a line and I'll direct you to the Hat Master herself, Robin.

Robin also gave me a big bag of this......

It's something she called "Puffcorn".  Ok, so I am NOT from a corn producing state so had NO CLUE what this was.  Now I can tell you it's a popcorn that has had the hulls removed.  It just about melts in your mouth and barely resembles popcorn to me.  You can buy it plain or butter flavored or even with a caramel coating.
But Robin makes her own caramel variety from the plain stuff, and she presented me with a bag of puffcorn she made.

Well I'll tell you what.......Robin may call this Puff Corn but I call it PUFF CRACK!
O.
M.
G.

I resisted trying it until we got home to PA from our adventures.
And it's a good thing I did.
Because if I had tried it while still in the Midwest(since I couldn't find anywhere to buy this near home and no one here has even heard about it!)I might have thrown out all the adult beverages we had collected in the car's trunk so far into our trip and refilled the trunk with bags of this stuff(the plain variety)so I could have made my own.

Let's just say that once I opened this bag and tried it, it wasn't very long before it was empty.
Really, it was THAT good.
You may have heard me whimpering a little in PA from wherever you are when I finished that Puff Crack back in August.
And I didn't even share it with anyone.......bad, bad Sluggy.......

But I digress......

We posed for a quick photo before goodbye hugs were exchanged and Hubs and I hit the road again.
Thanks for the fun lunch Pam and Robin!  It was great to finally meet the both of you.

Then it was back onto the Highway.....

Sometimes you just know you are in farm country. lol

At least no old spinster woman on a bicycle passed my window.....

A rest stop break to use the facilities and check the big map in the lobby and a gratuitous posed shot of Hubs with said map......

Then back on the road.
We passed this town near our destination.
Geez, I live near a large Amish community in PA and here they are in IL.....are the Amish stalking me?

Soon after this we pulled into the Sister in-law's town and checked into the hotel.
After freshening up, we met Hub's sister and her fiancée for dinner at a local steak place.
Hub's sister is the one without the beard.......

And I didn't take kindly to not being able to wear the big Foam Ten Gallon Hat(you only get it if it's your birthday and Hubs wouldn't let me lie about that), so I posed under it before we left the building.....I'm on my tippy toes but still not quite tall enough there, am I?

I bet you never would have guessed that I am silly this way?
If I can wear a Minion hat, I certainly can pretend to wear a big foam cowboy hat.

And after dinner we went back to our room and conked out because there were big plans for the following day.
Thus ends Day 4 of the Great Summer Road Trip of 2013.

To be continued.......

Final Sealed Pot Total for 2013 and What's on Deck for This Weekend

I finally hauled my Sealed Pot change up to the bank.  As you can see, I organize and roll my coins as I go rather than dumping it into a container loose for a year.

Here is all I was able to collect over this past year and most of this is collected from Hubs pocket change......

I was able to make 1 more roll of $10 and 1 more roll of 50¢ between the time of that photo in November and when I got it all to the bank earlier this week.

And here is what it looked like after the trip to the bank.....

$110.50 didn't make much of a dent in my Holiday spending.

If we didn't have kids and didn't spend on them, this amount would have gone far to cover the bulk of gifts I got for Hubs at least.
I figure any little bit helps though, right?  8-)

The snowstorm has already begun here so we'll be staying put in the house today.
No errands, no shopping today and probably tomorrow too.

The perfect day to finish decorating the tree, wrapping gifts and just relaxing together.
No cooking today as we have tons of leftovers to chose from.
And a walk in the snow for the doggy and organizing my next Salvation Army donation in the garage.
I am not ruling out that "adult beverages" may be consumed today......

What's on your plan for the weekend?

Did you do the Sealed Pot challenge or that 52 Week Money Challenge this year?
How did you do on it?

Rolling & Spending +Up Rewards at Rite-Aid

A storm is heading into town in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow so I hiked up to Rite-Aid to spend these +Up Rewards that were expiring on Saturday and beyond, since I won't be able to get there tomorrow.

Pay attention to this transaction so you can run up to your Rite-Aid before this sale ends on Saturday evening and try to do it.....this lot was bought on brother in-law's card.....

2 x Finish dishwasher ORANGE gel pacs on sale BOGO=$6.79
1 x Finish dishwasher tabs on clearance 50%=$4.14
1 x Simplify facial tissue on sale=.59¢
Subtotal.....$11.52

Used no Qs so paid with $11 in +Ups and .56¢(.52¢ + .04¢ tax)out of pocket.

Does sound like such a great until you notice the TRY ME FREE Q on one of the orange gel pac boxes....

So spend $10.93 on dishwasher tabs/pacs, get $4.50 back(max. for the Try Me Free Rebate), makes the cost $6.43.
Add in that there is a $3 +Up Rewards when you spend $10 on select products this week, and Finish is one of the products.
So with the $3 +Ups I earned, the cost is now $3.43 for 3 boxes....or about $1.15 per box.
Nice.
See if your store has any clearance Finish products and orange gel pacs with the TMF Rebate sticker.
You can also supplement your $12 purchase with ZipLoc bags(as those qualify for this +Ups Deal)and there is a $1/2 IPQ at Coupons dotcom for those.

Then I bought on my card.......

3 x Snickers bars on sale .59¢=$1.77
2 x Speed Stick deodorant BOGO=$3.79
1 x Sinful nail polish on sale $1.99=$1.99
1 x Sinful nail polish rang up $1.59=$1.59 ??

I used....
1 x B2G1F Mars candy Q=$.59
1 x $1.50/1 Speed Stick Catalina Q=$1.50
Coupon Total....$2.09

$9.14-$2.09=$7.05
I paid with $6.50 in +Ups, so paid out of pocket .55¢.
I received $3.98 in +Up Rewards back(2 x $1.99 Sinful).  Even though one of the polishes rang up $1.59(color was KISSY)it still generated a $1.99 +Ups.
Whatever.

Then I did this transaction back on bil's card......

2 x Yogi tea w/20% discount $3.75=$7.50
1 x Scott TP 12 pack on sale=$7.49
1 x Simplify Facial Tissue on sale=$.59

1 x $1/2 Reese's candy AdPerks Q=$1.00
Coupon Total....$14.15

$25.58-$14.15=$11.43
I used $11 in +Up Rewards and paid out of pocket .43¢.
I received $1 +Ups back(for the Scott tp)too.

Before these purchases, I bought $200 in Home Improvement gift cards-my converting cash into gift cards($100 on each Wellness card)and earned $40 in +Up Rewards.  We know we will be spending this $200 and more on house stuff at Lowe's/Home Despot anyway, so why not get a bonus $40 in free script to spend on toiletries at Rite-Aid?  ;-)

So today I spent OOP $1.58 for all this, I'll be getting a $4.50 rebate and I earned $47.98 in new +Up Rewards.
And I bought home $77.26 in food/toiletries to use.

I also got a rain check for the .59¢ facial tissue boxes deal since I bought the last couple on the shelves today.  Come February we'll probably need more tissues so why pay more than I have to for them? 8-))

What did you get at Rite-Aid this week?

Sluggy's Mid December Holiday Week Ramble

It's been very cold here, like in many other parts of the country.
I tell you, I use to be impervious to cold, but not so much this year.
Maybe it's the weight loss and maybe I just stepped over into old age recently, but I feel every drop in degree lately and just can't warm up.
bleh.

Hubs and I went out to a local pub/restaurant.  I had a gift certificate that needed to be used by the end of December.  This place is always hopping on weekends, so we went during the week as I didn't relish eating in a noisy bar with inebriated customers surrounding me.
By the time we were finished with our meal and ready to leave the place was filling up fast even on a Wednesday, so we got that visit done in the nick of time.

I had a rare drink out with my meal.  They called this a GRAPE SKITTLES....you would like it Sonya Ann....lol

 It tasted like Grape Kool-Aid.
And Hubs had a Mad Elf ale......

As we were leaving the dining room area of the pub, I noticed that the 8 tables of diners/drinkers who were seated after us.....all but 1 table of people......every single person had a smartphone placed on the table in front of them, ready to pounce on it I suppose when it came to life signaling a text.
The one couple who was there before we came in, the guy was on his phone the entire time they were eating, ignoring his dining companion.
All I can do is shake my head at what in-person social interaction has become in this day and age.

We dropped the broken vehicle off last night to get it looked at and I just found out it is not good news.
#2 Son is costing us $2,300 as he let the oil run low(out?) and it needs a new engine now.
Lovely.  Another reason not to buy a new driver a new car.
I am calling my Savings Challenge for 2013 officially over with and done, since this expense means there will be no money leftover at the end of December.  Heck, I may have to dig into last year's Savings Challenge funds, IF there are any left after what we spent on home renovations this year.

But enough of crappy news.  I refuse to dwell on it during the Holidays.

Hubs took #2 Son to school so I could have my car back today.  We are getting nasty weather tomorrow so I am off to run errands today......another trip to Rite-Aid to use +Ups expiring Saturday(since I won't be able to get there tomorrow) and a trip to the grocery store for those loss leaders I haven't picked up yet.
Since we are going to be snowed in tomorrow(the forecast just got upped to 8 inches + sleet after the snow)I may pick up a discounted pizza today for dinner and we'll work on the leftovers for lunch and dinner on Saturday.

I got ALL my Christmas packages & cards mailed out yesterday so other than the errant eBay sale, I am done with dealing with the insanity that is the post office until 2014.

All the shopping was finished days ago(with the arrival in the mail of the last online purchase)so all that is left to do here is to deck the halls some more and divvy up the Xmas loot for the stockings and wrap/bag gifts up using rolls of paper I've had for years and the used gift bags/cloths that make their appearance every December.

I still haven't done any Holiday Baking this year.  I always send one Brother in-law oatmeal cookies but he's got stomach issues so I won't be doing that this year.  The only folks around this Christmas to eat any baking I do are me, Hubs and #2 Son.  I certainly don't NEED all these sweets and Hubs isn't a big sweets eater.  That leaves #2 Son and being so involved in music both at school and as an extracurricular activity plus his part time job, he is just never home to graze in the kitchen.  And working in a restaurant, he often eats there so I never know how much to cook anymore.  I am looking to downsize the food bill in 2014.  Between #2 Son not eating here much and me not eating as much the last 2 months I'm hoping to knock down the grocery bill about $50 in the new year.
But more on that later.....

Yesterday I spent some time going through my tubs of stuff in the garage and den and gleaned out 2 more boxes of Salvation Army donations.
Then I spent some time organizing the garage some so I can get more tubs from storage to throw in there in preparation for going through them.  It is looking like getting the storage totally emptied and shutting down my account there is NOT going to happen by the end of December.  My absolute deadline for getting rid of the storage unit is Jan. 31st 2014.  Unless we get many snowstorms between now and then, I WILL get that accomplished!

This is what one side of the unit looked like back in mid July......still a significant amount of stuff in there......

And this is what it looks like as of this morning......

A wider shot so you can see how empty the unit is....

It's 12 tubs/boxes of stuffed animals still to go through.

And this poor little fellow lost his head......sort of looks like I feel like lately......lol

Today at 1:25pm my only daughter turned 21.  So apropos that today is FRIDAY the 13th.....lol

I "shared" this photo of her as a newborn on her Facebook timeline this morning.

I suspect she will be angry with me, as all her cool friends will see this.
At least I didn't post one of the MANY home movies I have and REALLY embarrass the crap out of her.  ;-)
Happy Birthday to my baby girl!
Mom loves you then and now.....

Off to Rite-Aid & the Grocery Store now before the snow flies........

Not Shopping Today

Remember my This Week On the Dining Table Post earlier this week?
The one where I said I was going to spend as little as possible this week on food/toiletries because I spent so much last week?

Well, so far so good.
I've spent OOP .65¢ all week, and that was at Rite-Aid.
I haven't made one trip to the grocery store this week, not even to pick up the loss leaders I wanted to get.

Go me! lol
If I keep this up I'll be able to come in under the food budget for December.

Of course it helps that I had lots of food here already going into this week.
Then #2 Son's car died yesterday so I am stranded until further notice without a car so I can't run to the store.

Tonight we'll have that discounted roaster I picked up at Wegman's last week.  I cooked it up last week so I just have to heat it up and throw together some sides.

Tomorrow is leftover meatloaf and a green veggie.
Saturday?....who knows.  Depends on what is going on that day and how I am feeling.  But we don't have to buy any food if we don't want to, that's for sure! ;-)

$20K Savings Challenge......November Update

In our family we save money. It is important to us to put money aside for "rainy days".  You know.....those unexpected days when things happen in your life that you can't plan on, but that DO happen and they cost you money you didn't know you'd need to pay out.

Our income is mainly the salary my Hubs draws from his job.  We have money taken off each paycheck from the top to put into savings, before we even get our hands on it.  This money that's taken goes into various pots....life insurance, health insurance premiums, long term care insurance premiums, investments and retirement savings.  It's automatic so we are never tempted to NOT put it into savings.
Once the automatic savings, plus taxes and medical/dental/vision payments are taken out, it leaves what we get to "live on".  From this amount we budget for bills, both monthly and irregular bills(semi-annual, etc.) and our variable bills(like food, eating out, etc.)  Anything left over once our monthly expenses are paid, I put aside into a Savings Challenge.

For 2013 I am continuing my Yearly Savings Challenge.  I am going to keep the Goal amount at $20,000 again this year.
On to the November report.....

I have posted my November End of Month $20K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the Savings Challenge page tab at the top of the blog for the specific numbers.

I have 2 goals each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $1,666.67.
But seeing as I hit the $20K goal in October, we'll just see how much more I can sock away in November.

I have to report that we finished up November with a nice amount.
The extra cash amount we ended the month of November with?.......$1,825.64..

Income
We had $1,764.52 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.

Other monies received in November totaled $61.12.  This brought us to our gain of $1825.64 for November.

At this point, any money we save until the end of 2013 is bonus and I am glad to have it! 8-))

Outgo
As for the expenses this November, here are the good and the bad side of things....

HERE are the GOOD THINGS

*  Evidently I overpaid(again!)the long distance phone last month so our bill was only $4.05 in Nov.
*  Cash withdrawals were $370 less than in Oct.
*  I didn't buy any living room furniture yet so no spending there.

HERE are the BAD THINGS

*  I overspent on the food budget by $182.
*  The electric bill was $130 MORE than in October because of the heat being on.
*  We had pet related spending of $186 due to having to put our doggy down. 8-(
*  The credit card bill was double Oct.'s bill due to clothes spending, but mostly due to mini-vacation spending.

The Food Budget costs for October are in another post, which is located HERE.

The 2013 TOTAL so far.....
With 11 months behind us, our Savings Grand Total for 2013 stands at $22,751.92.

We surpassed our goal by $2,751 so far and have 1 more month to try to sock away some more!

Looking ahead for December......

*  Christmas happens, oh yes!, it does this month.  We are traveling during the Holiday season so there will be additional expenses for food, lodging and gas before December ends.

*  The credit card bill(with a lot of holiday shopping!)has closed as of yesterday so we will have a big expense paying it off this month(we never run a balance or pay interest on a credit card).  All those Home Improvement Gift cards I bought are on that bill too.  We will have enough cash to cover our bills this month but it will eat up much of our excess cash from paychecks, so I am not hopeful for saving much cash into the Savings Challenge in December.

*  Add in that the 3rd car(the one #2 Son drives)broke down last night, so we are looking at a not-yet-determined repair bill for that.  There goes more cash that might have been saved in December.

*  That living room furniture I haven't  bought yet?  It looks like it's not going to happen until sometime in 2014 now.  But I am ok with that.  It's not like we don't have awesome new inexpensive recliners to sit on instead. ;-)

So how was your November financially?

Did you spend less than the income you had in November?
Did you stay within your budget or not?
Did you pay off any debts or put extra toward your mortgage principle?

If you posted your financial progress on your own blog, leave a link in the comments so we can go check you out your progress too and celebrate with you!
