Meal Planning Feb. Week 3 & Food Spending Week 2

Here is the only photo I took of the "Nemo" we got around here.  Snowfall totaled about 6-7 inches.

Oh the inhumanity of it all!  Will I ever be able to sit on my swing again? lol
To a Southerner(except for those raised in the mountains), THIS amount of snow is enough to make you panic.  Nobody can drive in it, most places don't have the equipment to deal with it and everybody goes nuts thinking they'll never be able to buy food at the grocery store again!
I must say that "real" snowfall amounts were a novelty to me the first few years I lived above the Mason-Dixon Line, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing snow.
But it wears off right quick when you have to shovel it.

Good luck up in New England though as they got total snowfalls like we use to get in the Poconos every year.   Here's our previous house.....

I can't believe we lived there and SHOVELED out multiple times a Winter without a snowblower for 14 YEARS!  We were young and healthier......oh, and broke, so couldn't justify the expense of a snowthrowing machine.

So you folks in CT, RI, MA and ME have my sympathies.

And here is what actually got served last week......

Sunday--Chicken Fajitas
Monday--Taco Bell or Fend for Yourself
Tuesday--Salmon, Broccoli
Wednesday--Pan Saute Chicken, leftover rice from Take-Out, leftover Corn
Thursday--leftover Chicken Fajitas
Friday--Buffalo Blue Cheese Chicken Dip with Celery or leftover Tortilla Chips
Saturday--Hamburgers, French Fries, leftover Salad

I served about half of what I had planned.  The hot dogs, ,the soup and the ravioli got moved to this week.  Friday the Daughter was all jazzed to make some amazing chicken dip she had had before.  It called for 2 bottles of Frank's hot sauce(2 bottles!!!)so I knew I'd probably be dieting on Friday whether I wanted to or not. lol  She cut down on the hot sauce but it was still too spicy for me, though I did eat some of it.  It was also a CHEESE OVERLOAD.  So between the mega cheese and the hot sauce, let's just say I was not a happy camper on Saturday who stuck close to the bathroom and leave it at that.   Next time, I'll eat less of that hot mess and carry a box of baby wipes with me for the next 24 hours.  LOLZ
Now that I've scarred you for life.....let's move on.

The food spending last week?
Ugh.
I spent $120.90 at my 2 stores.  Most of the damage was done at Weis PMITA Markets.  I bought dairy products for Daughter's dip(everything was on sale thankfully), fruit, ravioli, asparagus, beans, OJ, clearance bologna, 3lb. of ground beef and splurged on a box of Crab Rangoons.  Then I stocked up on 6 100% juices, honey, 3lbs. of catfish and 4 pizzas, the ones we love best(on sale AND used Qs!). A sale pack of Salmon, Cabbage, Onions and frozen Green Beans(all on sale)rounded out my shopping for the week.

I've spent $206.92 and I am left at this point with $193.08 in my food budget for February.

As for leftovers rolling into this week--the only thing is a big bowl of that Chicken Dip stuff.  I'm not eating it but the family has orders to do so since it sure did cost a fortune!
If I have to buy some chips or something to get them to use it up, by gosh I will.....even if I have to pay retail for the chips!! ;-)

***********************

Here is what is getting served this week.....
Sunday--Hot Dogs, Grilled Asparagus
Monday--Ham and Bean Soup, Green Bean Casserole, homemade Bread
Tuesday--Halushki + Ham Soup/GB Casserole, Bread
Wednesday--Meatloaf, Potatoes(not sure which way), Cauliflower
Thursday--Leftovers or Fend for Yourself
Friday--Ravioli, Sausage Sauce, Caesar Salad
Saturday--Maybe Chinese date nite with Hubs

Needed at the store to serve the meals I am making this week?
I already picked up the Asparagus, Cabbage, Celery, frozen Green Beans, frozen Ravioli and a can of beans(for the soup-can you believe I had no dried Northern beans left?)last week.
Still need....Romaine lettuce, milk. I'm looking to stay out of the store(except to do my Price Book Week 6 numbers) so I'll give myself $40 this week just in case a good deal comes up.

What's on your menu for the week?  Any good deals at the grocers this week?
Did you have any food waste this week?  I need to clean out the nether regions of my fridge this week and I have a bad bad feeling I'm going to find a science experiment back there. lol

Only a Southern Girl........

My buddy Lisa Pie posted this over on her Facebook feed and I am stealing it so all y'all can see it.
But especially so my Daughter can start studying up on how she is gonna be needin' to talk once she moves to Louisiana.

I am a G.R.I.T.S. gal through and through so it's pained me that my children have not been raised in the South.
Yes, I have been known to have said, "I'm as stuffed as a tick!" on more than one occasion.

 Enjoy these!
There is nothing on Earth like a Southern Belle.....bless her heart. ;-)

$20K Savings Challenge....JANUARY Update

In our family we save money.
It is important to us to put money aside for "rainy days".  You know.....those unexpected days when things happen in your life that you can't plan on, but that DO happen and they cost you money you didn't know you'd need to pay out.

Our income is mainly the salary my Hubs draws from his job.  We have money taken off each paycheck from the top to put into savings, before we even get our hands on it.  This money that's taken goes into various pots....life insurance, investments and retirement savings.  It's automatic so we are never tempted to NOT put it into savings.
Once the automatic savings, plus taxes and medical/dental/vision payments are taken out, it leaves what we get to "live on".  From this amount we budget for bills, both monthly and irregular bills(semi-annual, etc.) and our variable bills(like food, eating out, etc.)  Anything left over once our monthly expenses are paid, I put aside into a Savings Challenge.

For 2013 I am continuing my Yearly Savings Challenge.  I am going to keep the Goal amount at $20,000 again this year.

On to the January report.....

I have posted my JANUARY End of Month $20K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the side bar to your right for the specific numbers.

I have 2 goals each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $1,666.67.

I have to report that we finished up January in the black!
The extra cash amount we ended the month of January with?.......$2,761.06

Income
We had $2,579.14 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.
Add in a per diem check for mileage for some business traveling and some bank interest and we get another $181.92.  This brought our gain to $2,761.06 for January.

Outgo
As for the expenses this January, most of them were on the bad side, rather than the good side....

HERE are the GOOD THINGS
*  The medical bills were $192 lower.
*  The credit card bill was $98 lower.
*  There were no Xmas spending or car repairs/maintenance bills.

HERE are the BAD THINGS
*  The cable bill  monthly price went up in 2013 by $4 a mo.
*  The cash withdrawals were $100 higher.
*  The water bill went up $4+.
*  The electric bill went up by $43.
*  The quarterly garbage bill is due in January.

The Food Budget costs for JANUARY are in another post, which is located HERE
We managed to stay well within our $400 food budget in January.

The 2013 TOTAL so far.....
With 1 month behind us, our Savings Grand Total for 2013 stands at $2,761.06.
We surpassed our monthly goal by $1,000 in January!  This extra will be a very good thing later in the year, during some of our more financially challenging months, when we can't hit our target goal.

Looking ahead for February......
February is always a challenging money month for us, because our semi-annual car insurance premium is due, as well as our county taxes for the year.  I also have an unexpected dental bill to pay in February.
In addition, the electric/heating bill will be the highest one of the year this month.
I am hoping to keep the variable bills(food, credit card, Hubs cash withdrawals)wrangled in February to compensate.  And I will hope that none of the cars needs anything other than gas until March.

So how was your January financially?
Did you put the Holiday spending on credit, and do you have Christmas debt to pay now?
Did you spend less than the income you made in January?
Did you stay within your budget or not?

If you posted your financial progress on your own blog, leave a link in the comments so we can go check you out your progress too and celebrate with you!

Wednesday's Child is "Lucky" to Be Here

*Sluggy talks about her life.*  These are my thoughts and attempts to work through issues in my life.  I may express personal views I held at certain periods/ages throughout my life in these posts.  How I saw some events that transpired in my life were obviously shaped by my age and mental abilities at that time and the society I was living in.  What I experienced may be very different from how others involved experienced the same events.

In many ways I am "lucky" to be here.  Here meaning both alive and living the life I currently have.  Looking back on the unvarnished facts from my birth until today, I can imagine a much different reality than what came to pass.

I went paging through the family photos I've digitized so far looking for one of my entire nuclear family.
I had to go all the way forward to 1969 to find one with both my parents and my brothers and I in it.
It's a classic.....an Owen Mills portrait which no doubt cost a pretty penny.  This may be the prettiest my family ever was as a group.  Note that at this point both my brothers were sullen non-smiling teenagers.

There was one other taken at Easter with all 5 of us in it, dating from 1959, but this one works.

I have(or had)two brothers.  They were born 13 months apart in the early 1950's.  Not quite twins and very different in personality too.
I came along in 1959, so I am 6 and 7 years younger than them.  Being the opposite sex and basically born at such a great time interval from them, I feel as if I was raised an an only child.  We never "hung out" together as kids unless they were forced to be in the same room with me by the grown-ups in our lives.  Often when the younger of the two was forced to be around me, I was made to know he was not happy about the arrangement and he made me suffer for it.  We have never had a close relationship.

My brothers memories and experiences of my parents and family is very different from mine.
Our family was low income mostly while my brothers were young, but by the time I was at the same stages of growing up as they had been, our family was middle class.  One of my brothers use to joke(I think he was half joking)that I got everything lavished upon me as a kid, while he, at that age, was lucky to have a stick and rusty barbed wire to play with.  But I digress....

My father had always wanted a girl child, or so I was told.  If he had had his druthers, my oldest brother would have been a girl I was told on more than one occasion.
My parents were thrilled when my mother finally gave birth to a baby girl.
Now I don't know if this was the truth or they were just blowing smoke up my fancy drawers in an attempt to raise my fragile girly self-esteem, but it's what was regurgitated to me through my younger years. This was one of the few things said to me by my parents that actually made me feel better about myself when I was growing up.

The day I made my entrance into the world, Cecil B DeMille left it.....

And Alfalfa was murdered in an armed fight in Hollywood, California.....

I use to watch the Little Rascals on tv a lot(back in the 1960's before there were many "new" children's programming on daytime local network channels).  I remember someone told me that Alfalfa was dead back then.   He was among my most favorite of the Our Gang so it made me sad every time I watched an Our Gang short.  Being a little kid I didn't know he had died as a grown man.  I imagined him the way pictured having died.  So something that should have given me pleasure(watching kiddie tv)made me feel sad inside.

My birth was uneventful.  I was born near my due date and was a normal size, except for my ginormous head.  I did have the audacity to be born quite early in the morning which did NOT please my mother.
My mother reminded me of the early hour and never forgave me for waking her up in the morning, as she was not a morning person.  Really.  Not.
I suppose that all those times she said she blamed me for waking her up the day of my birth, she was joking.  But my young child self didn't fully understand that she was joking(if she was).  Intellectually now I realize she was being sarcastic, but I still feel weird about it.

Another thing that was blamed on me by my mother was that my birth was the cause of her taking up cigarette smoking.  Evidently, child #3 and the ensuing responsibilities was enough to drive her to smoke to relieve her stress and anxiety.
Again, these stories were both regurgitated to me often as I grew.

Now my question today is, why would a parent tell their child they were so wanted to the detriment of their oldest sibling and then turn around and blame them for having taken up an addictive habit and losing some sleep one night/early morning the day they gave birth?
Before you say that my parents were obviously joking with me, let me tell you that there was very little levity displayed in our household.

The day of my birth was a Wednesday.  The "Monday's Child" poem over the years has proved to be prophetic for me.
Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day.
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

After a week's vacation from cooking and cleaning and taking care of her family, my mother and I were  released from the hospital and my parents took me home.

Back in that time and place, new mothers were encouraged to be modern and take advantage of the "advances" in technology and take care of their babies the new ways and leave old fashioned practices behind.
The modern way was to use disposable diapers if the budget allowed it.  Very few families in the late 1950's/early 1960's could find the extra money for those, including mine.

The other big advancement was feeding your baby with formula and not breastfeeding.  The Modern Woman of the 1960's was told that feeding your infant formula was doing the very best for your baby.
Similac had been reformulated in the early 1950's and Enfamil came onto the market the same year I made my debut.  Manufacturers, besides having magazine and print ads, now had that most powerful marketing tool of Television, to convince the "hip" mothers poised on the cusp of the Space Age that feeding formula was superior to feeding your child as they had been fed for a millennium or two.

My mother so wanted to fit in into the Modern Society and had so little confidence in her abilities as a mother, to know what was the best thing to do for her child, that she stuck a bottle of formula in my gob.
I'm sure her decision also was based on the ease of bottle feeding, as a harried woman of 25 with 2 grade school boys, an infant, 2 guinea pigs, 1 dog and a demanding husband who never lifted a finger around the house to help out.

During the second week of my life, my world turned on it's head.  My mother went to check on me one evening and I was barely breathing.  My face and fingers were blue.  10 days old and I couldn't breath.

A panicked ride to the hospital's emergency room ensued and I underwent days of testing.
The eventual diagnosis was Asthma brought on by severe allergic reactions.

More weeks of allergy skin tests ensued.  My mother never shared with me the whole list of what I was allergic too(and it was long), but I do remember the ones she shared--chocolate, sweet potatoes, animal dander, assorted plants like ragweed, flower pollens, hay, everyday household dust, and the big one......cow's milk.  Back then they didn't know it but it's the protein in the cow's milk that children with this allergy can't tolerate.  It is the most common food intolerance known to man.

I was allergic to the formula keeping me alive.
So the doctors said to feed me goat's milk instead.

The goat milk took a bigger bite out of my family's income and worked.....briefly.
Within months I had built up an intolerance to goat milk too.

The last resort they offered up as a solution was soy milk.
This was not something readily available in that time in the South.
And once my parents located a source it came at a dear price.

So this is how I came to be the most expensive baby on my block.
I had an expensive diet and started taking pricey allergy shots every 2nd week, before I turned 1 year old.
My maternal Grandmother had to pay for my food and my shots as my parents couldn't afford either.
Imagine if my grandma wasn't a great saleswoman with the funds to bankroll my lavish lifestyle!

Even with the shots, I was still at risk of having one of my allergen triggers set off an asthma attack at any moment.
This photo pretty much sums up my life until the age of 2.......

The doctors told my parents that in order to keep me from dying of an asthma attack, our home had to be cleaned thoroughly every 24 hours.  Since that was impossible for my mother to do and take care of everything else and everyone else each day, I was confined to my room every day except for brief periods of time when I could be closely supervised for warning symptoms of an impending attack.
I was a prisoner and my room was my jail cell.

The house was stripped of carpets and pets were banished or made to live outside.  My room was also stripped of curtains(blinds attract less dust) and furnishings.  I was allowed only a few toys and my bedding was washed every day and my room was wet mopped and wiped down every day.
I had few interactions with other children except my much older brothers those first years and this was my view of the world.

My mother entitled this photo in the scrapbook, "Happy Baby".  I had just passed my first Birthday.  I suppose since this is the only life I had known, I was a happy baby.  It goes a long way to explain why I have always felt comfortable being by myself.  I crave alone time.   I was groomed for the solitary life as a baby.  A happy baby alone in her room.

Happy except for the gastrointestinal distress I felt every day of my life while being fed soy milk.  I couldn't articulate to the grown ups around me that the soy milk was causing me pain and I was always hungry as it ran right through me.  I suppose they either didn't notice the distress I was going through or they just chalked my discomfort up to some of the foods I was eventually introduced to that may have caused a mild allergic reaction but did not triggered an asthma attack.

Turns out that fairly recently scientists discovered that while the protein in cow milk is ranked the most common cause of food intolerance, number 2 on that hit parade is.....soy protein!

This goes a long way to explain why a baby allergic to soy who is fed a diet of soy milk as an infant grows up to have eating and weight issues.  Being constantly hungry as an infant and toddler must have had a psychological effect on me in regard to my relationship with food.
The body image issues came later thanks to family members, the media and society.

January Goals Final Check-In

This year I am going to Set my 2013 Goals by the Month instead of for the Year.
So each month I'll put up my TO DO LIST and cross off the goals as they are completed.
End of each month, I'll do a final check-in on what was accomplished and what wasn't.

This is January's Final Check-In......

* Gather Tax Records--DONE!  Now the REAL FUN begins as we actually DO the taxes.  lol

* Make New Price Book--IN PROGRESS  We are in Week 5 of this 6 Week process.  Price Book will be finished this month.

* Shut Down eBay Store--DONE!  Accomplished halfway through January.  Bill was also paid in full, despite eBay sending me WARNING LETTERS for 3 weeks.  It was difficult ignoring those letters, since I was getting a bill credit for unused eBay Store time, but I held off and I still misjudged my credit by $1.12.....meaning I have a credit with eBay of $1.12.  Maybe I should start sending them threatening letters that they owe me money and they'd better pay me or else!!!

* Clean out InkFrog files & Close Account--IN PROGRESS  I emptied about 100 picture files but then began rethinking shutting it down right now.  It's going to be a very large job to save all my files to my hard drive so I'll have this expense for a few more months. It goes onto February's List.

* Scan 1 scrapbook of photos--FAIL  I got the book picked out but haven't begun this project yet.  It goes onto February's List.

* Finish reading the John Lee Holt book--DONE!  This was difficult.  Being as it is the compilation of personal letters this ancestor wrote home to his wife and family, it had no editorial rewriting to make it "hang" together like a work of fiction type book.  So I did better with reading it continuously every day or so, rather than picking it up in fits and starts and reading short amounts every few weeks or once a month, as I had been tackling it.  But reading it continuously was also difficult emotionally because I felt truly connected to him(and am via DNA)and his plight and I knew how his life's journey ended, so I read with a most heavy heart.  I received the book in June of 2012 and because it was emotionally draining to read, I hadn't gotten very far by the end of the year, as I was forever putting the book down.  I changed my plan of attack on the book(pardon me John!lol)and despite the gloominess of my mood, read it through in January.
I guess unless you are a Southerner who has not been brainwashed by all the tomes of Yankee mythology and propaganda that passes for truth out there regarding Lincoln's War, you don't understand what is in the mind and hearts of the Southern people.  And you wouldn't have been affected like I was by this book.

* Put Christmas stuff away--DONE!  The putting away went quite smoothly this year and I believe was accomplished quicker than in years past.  Yay us!

* Defrost the Freezer--DONE!  Thanks to #2 Son one day when school was cancelled because of weather conditions, we knocked this one out of the ballpark in 3 hours.  It did involve food filled coolers, winter gloves, bowls of ice and rubber mallets. 'Nuf said.....

* Drop National Comsumer Panel/Nielsen Membership--DONE!  I've got to laugh because the first Sunday evening after I sent the Nielsen scanner back I was feeling all anxious and jumpy.  And then I realized why....Sunday evening was my deadline for scanning purchases into NCP for the week.  For the last few years, being a member of that group, I had been putting pressure on myself every Sunday to get everything scanned before the scanner started beeping and uploading the data.  I realized at that moment how much I HATED doing this!  Seriously, it was a lot of stupid grunt work for literally NO reward.  No money and little piddley "rewards" or prizes.  And they kept dangling the prize carrot in your face on a stick.  Add in that their instructions SUCKED and nothing worked like it was suppose to and they made you feel like it was YOUR fault.  And god forbid you have a problem with the equipment and had to actually call them.  Their CS people were surly at best and condescending and rude at worst.  You would think that they'd want to be helpful?  Ha!  They talked down to you like you were 6 years old and didn't know how to operate a toaster, let alone anything a bit more technologically advanced.  I guess that's what you get when you locate your call center/company on Long Island NY.  Now I am not condemning all folks from that part of the country, but from my experience with many of them(having lived and worked in the metro NY/NJ area)is that a high concentration of people from there are loud and obnoxious.  It would be very easy to get a bunch of people working there who exude attitude all day long in their every day life.  People who don't interact with people from that area of the country on a regular basis don't understand that this is normal operating mode in daily life, and don't appreciate being talked down to in that way.   I was part of a similar program years ago that was operated out of Charleston, South Carolina.  The difference in how those employees in their CS Dept. treated you was the day to the night(mare) that those Nielsen(aka National Consumer Panel)people were!

* Celebrate my Birthday!--DONE!  I think we did a right good job of celebrating me in January.  We did some nice eating out(nothing extravagant except the steak house)and used quite a few FREEBIES and gift cards, keeping the costs down.

So I completed 7, 2 In Progress rolled over into February and 1 Fail, which also rolls over into February's List.

I'm good with how I did on my January Goals.
February Goals are posted and this month will be more challenging given I've rolled these 3 goals onto what I already had planned.
Here's hoping your January Goals went smoothly!

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....

I went into January with $400 budgeted for food/toiletries for the month.  I have $109.76 leftover in my January food envelope.  And I spent so little and even stocked up on pet food in January.
I redeemed 26 manufacturer's coupons at the 2 grocery stores(1/3 were Peelies, 1/3 were Instant Store discount Stickers and the last 1/3 were ManuQs) and 17 coupons at the drug store.
I also earned and spent 1 x $10 Catalina Q at Weis.
I tried to get us to eat down some frozen foods this month so I could defrost my freezer.  I found some neglected items buried in the back which we make a pretty successful effort to use up.
Go us! ;-)

Looking ahead to February---We'll stick to our $400 food budget again this month.  It seems to be working for us at this amount.  I'll be changing over some food choices this month and I am curious to see how this affects our spending.

And here is the run down of my Food & Toiletries Spending for 2013 so far--
2013 Total Saved $453.59

2013 Yearly Total Value of Items  $743.83

2013 Yearly Total Spent $290.24

Meal Planning Feb. Week 2 & Food Spending Week 1

What do the White Rabbit and Sluggy have in common?
It's dinnertime here already and I am just now getting around to my weekly meal planning.

And here is what actually got served last week......

Sunday--KFC chicken, sides, biscuits
Monday--Pizza or Leftover KFC or Beef Tips
Tuesday--Steak dinner out(birthday meal)
Wednesday--Italian dinner out(birthday freebie)
Thursday--Sloppy Joes, corn
Friday--Fend for Yourself
Saturday--Chinese take-out(I had Eggplant in Garlic Sauce)

I actually "cooked" but once last week.....IF you can call Sloppy Joes cooking. lol

The food spending last week?
Well it's only a couple of days since most of last week was still January(so that spending went onto my Jan. spending totals), but I was able to spend a whopping $72.18 on Saturday.  Granted $2.12 of that was tax, I stocked up on Mexican items(tortillas, salsa $8.75)and $33.75 of the spending was on dog foods.  The rest, $27.56, was spent on milk, fruit, veggies, bread and chicken.  I also received $11 in Catalinas for buying the pet food so I have future savings.

I am left at this point with $327.82 in my food budget for February.

As for leftovers rolling into this week--not much beyond a helping of Sloppy Joes is left and some rolls.  Hard to have leftovers if you don't actually cook or eat at home much in a week. lol
I didn't serve 2 of the meals last week so they roll over into this week.

***********************

Here is what is getting served this week.....

Sunday--Chicken Fajitas
Monday--Taco Bell or Fend for Yourself
Tuesday--Salmon, Green Bean Casserole
Wednesday--Ham and Bean Soup, homemade Bread
Thursday--Hot Dogs, Beans, Corn
Friday--Ravioli, Sausage Sauce, Caesar Salad
Saturday--Leftovers

Taco Bell for #2 Son this week but the rest of us are staying away from the fast food.

Needed at the store to serve the meals I am making this week?
Salad Greens and celery are needed.  I also need fruit and a few other things.   I haven't looked at the ads yet to see if there are any deals.  I'm looking to stay out of the stores so I'll try to keep the spending at $35 this week.

I'll be going to my 2 grocery stores this week to note prices for the new Price Book.
What's on your menu for the week?  Any good deals at the grocers this week?
Did you have any food waste this week?

What Goes On Sale in February?

It's February.  So what will one find are the good deals this month?

The obvious is candy.  The 14th of the month brings us St. Valentine's Day, so look for candy, especially the CHOCOLATE varieties to go on sale the first 2 weeks of the month.  Also items often thought of as  gifts for a sweetheart.....long stemmed roses and flowers, as well as items of an adult nature.....lubs, lingerie......ahem.....sex toys, etc.    Yes Sonya Ann, I said sex toys. ;-)

February 10th is the Chinese New Year.  2013 is the Year of the Snake.  Look for Asian food products like soy/fish/plum/duck/ginger/teriyaki as well as other sauces, noodles, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, canned chow mein, soup mixes, etc.

It's National Hot Breakfast Month--look for hot cereals like oatmeal and wheat concoctions, syrups, frozen breakfast foods to be good deals.

Also National Canned Food Month--look for all kinds of canned foods, from veggies, fruits, meats and seafood, to pie fillings to be on sale.

The Fresh Seasonal Produce you may find at a lower cost this month(depending on what region of the country you are located in)includes Artichoke, Asparagus, Avocado, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chard, Collards, Kale, Kiwi, Potatoes, Raspberries, Spinach and Strawberries.

Anybody have any others?

Sluggy

The Fun Never Ends!

Do you know what time it is kiddies?
Yes, it's time for......

Not my desk, but it could be.

I am off to start the torture for another year.
I'll be back later tonight, if I don't decide I need to start drinking heavily instead.....

As we spend the next few weeks undergoing this needless torture, maybe it's a good time to bring the subject of totally transforming the way we are taxed and pay those taxes in this country.
While the lunacy of this tax system is fresh on your brain, go check this out A Better Way-The Fair Tax Plan.

Time to wrestle with forms and publications......*sigh*.....

Grand Total for Rite-Aid

I didn't have a whopping big month at Rite-Aid in January.
Even with the 50th Anniversary Promo I just couldn't get into the deals last month.
It is what it is I suppose.
At least I got the lowest +Up Reward and I got through the month without spending money out of MY pocket, so it's all good. 8-)

Food Waste=Lost $$

And this is just one thing wrong in this country.

I watched this segment on the national news the other night on Food Waste.
Go check it out HERE.
Go ahead.....I'll wait.

My thoughts......
First off, they seem to have no clue what they actually spend on food for a week.
I think they pulled that $300 number out of the air, because then they go on to think it extrapolates out to up to $1500 per month.
Yah.

Second, the husband is a financial planner.
Hello?!?
You work as a money professional and you don't seem to operate with a budget on a personal level, you have no clue how much money is going to your food expenses AND you are allowing on average 13 POUNDS of food to be thrown away every week?!
Would you want this guy to be advising YOU on how to take care of YOUR money? lol

Third, have these people never heard of LEFTOVERS?
Obviously they've never had to eat them before given the amount of money they make.
How difficult is it to take Taco Meat and incorporate it into something else?....or take Squash Soup and remake it into a sauce or blend it into some kind of baked good?.....or take leftover produce and do ANYTHING with it?  Heck, she could have even just taken those greens and juiced them.

The report went on to quote that the average monthly food waste costs in the US today amount to $190 per family.  Using this figure, a family would throw away a whopping $2,280 worth of food every year and I would bet that most of that food was still perfectly edible!

Good Googley Moogley people!!

I've seen "experts" say that a family/person should be spending between 9-15% of their income on food.  They didn't say whether that was on their gross or their net income.  Somewhere in that range seems to be the accepted happy place for food spending in the US.  Is your food spending falling within this 9-15% range?
I find this method of figuring how much to allot for your food very flawed.  It might sound reasonable for a family on the lower end of the income scale. But a family with 2 wage earners making over $100K per year?  The lower end of 9% would see them spending $18,000 a year on their food needs or $30,000 if they allotted 15% of income to food expenses.

I'm not making a judgement call on how much families spend on food here.  I get it that people on the lower socioeconomic rung of the societal ladder have to spend more of a percentage of their income on food.....that's just the way the math works.

I'm just saying that if we all were more vigilant on NOT disposing of perfectly edible food, imagine how much of the food we need to REBUY each week to feed our families wouldn't have to be purchased again, saving each of us part of our income.
Now add up that say, $20 a week we throw away, and multiple it by a year of weeks.......the weekly food we waste and don't think it's a "big deal" to our budgets......it starts to really add up to serious dollars.

Serious dollars over the coarse of a year you could have spent on other priorities in your life--paying down debt, socking away into an emergency fund, beefing up a fund so that your next cars didn't have to be financed......the list goes on and on.
I'm not saying to cut down on the type or amount of food you buy.  Just use ALL of what you buy.  Don't waste anything!  It would be like found money(the money you were spending to rebuy the food you let go to waste). Found money to put toward other goals in life!

Stop overbuying food you aren't planning on preparing to save for later(canning/freezing/dehydrating).
Get a handle on portion sizes so you aren't cooking more food than you need for a meal.
If you do end up with leftovers, find ways to incorporate them into new dishes.
Clean your fridge/pantry so that you can find the foods in there that need to be used up by a certain date.
If a food does go bad on you even after all your steps to avoid it, make it do duty in your compost pile(if applicable)and grow something.  Compost is the "saving grace" for food waste.

Have a look at this TED talk too....

We don't Need No Stinking Licenses!

For those who asked the driver's test didn't go as hoped yesterday.  #2 is walking around like Joe Bfstplk today.

I won't go into a tirade about state government bureaucrats aka driving examiners masquerading as asshats...and their bias against kids who have their parents teach them(and actually force them to do the full 60 hours of road work)as opposed to those who pay for a driving school(where they don't actually meet the state min. road requirements but I suspect they give kickbacks to some of these examiners)....but I really could! lol

Let's just say there is no joy in Mudville today......

Wise Words

While I never cared much for Penn & Teller's act, I think Penn Jillette is a very intelligent thinking man who, at his core, gets the big issues in life right.

You may not agree with him on the religion thing(as most of mainstream America still  isn't very open minded or accepting yet when it comes to that realm), but I encourage everyone to look up some of his writings on most any other subject.
He has a lot to say and he articulates it much better than I!

Getting to $100 Spent at Rite-Aid Last Week

Well, I did go to Rite-Aid last week and try to get to $100 of tracking so the $20 +Up Reward would kick out.

If you remember the Daughter gave me a box of chocolates for my Birthday, using my Wellness card to pay, so the $5.99 she spent tracked toward the 50th Anniversary +Up Reward Promo and I gained a $2 +Up Reward too.

So I began last week with $13.50 in +Ups and $54.40 in tracking toward the $20 +Up Reward.

I bought....

2 x 12 pack Coke(not pictured)=$8  I had 2 Free Coke Qs from my Coke Reward Pts. left, and the cashier let me use the $1 In-Ad Coke Q as well. 8-)
2 x GE Energy Smart CFL light bulbs $3.99=$7.98 and I used 2 x $1/1 Qs.
2 x Mam bottle nipples BOGO40%=$8.46 and I used 1 x $2/1 Q.
2 x Ragu Sauce RAINCHECKS ($1.00ea.)=$2.00.
Subtotal was $26.44.

After $13 in Qs leaves me with $13.44.
I used $11.50 in +Up Rewards and put the $1.94 left on my gift card.
I received back $12 in +Ups(2 x $3 GE lightbulbs, 2 x $3 Mam nipples).

That made my +Ups total $14($12 new + $2 leftover from before).
All the items bought tracked for the Reward so $54.40 + $26.44=$80.84 toward the $100 goal.

Daughter needed bottled water so I bought 2 cases at Rite-Aid last week.
2 x 24 pack of Nestle's water=$7.98
1 x Cella cherry w/Gold discount=$.26
Total of $8.24.  I used $8 in +Ups and put the .24¢ on the gift card.

I received $2 in +Up Rewards back(2 x $1 Nestle) so my Ups+ going forward total $8.
The water counted toward the tracking so $80.84 + $7.98=$88.82 total.

So I bought some qualifying items on Saturday to put me over the $100 mark, even if I didn't have any Qs to use! lol

2 x Scott TP on sale for $3.99=$7.98
2 x Jif Peanut Butter w/RAINCHECKS($1.99 ea.)=$3.98

Total was $11.96+.12¢ tax=$12.08
I used my $8 of +Up Rewards left and put the $4.08 on my gift card...actually 2 gift cards with small amounts left on them and most of it on my "Merchandise Return Card" from a return I made some time ago.  I've got to haul out my last gift cards from 2010 pretty soon.  When they are gone it's back to spending out of pocket at Rite-Aid. sigh

$88.82 + $11.96 spent in qualifying items=$100.78
I received my $20 50th Anniversary Promo +Up Reward.....yay!

Other than the baby nipples this is all stuff we needed/can use.  I was happy to get those light bulbs as they are the right strength and size for my desk lamp, and I had just put my last replacement bulb in my lamp.  And who can't use TP and food? lol
The baby items will be given a proper home in the coming months--either in a donation to the food bank, making up a basket of baby stuff for a fundraiser locally or maybe to a Boring Blog Giveaway box in the near future. ;-)

These trips to Rite-Aid--
OOP....$0.00
Value of items.....$71.66
+Ups coming into this trip....$13.50
+Ups used....$27.50
+Ups earned......$34.00

2 trips and $61.36 total spent.  $12.37 of that was unplanned spending, as a good deal popped up while I was in the local Shursave affiliate market.
And speaking of DEALS, here is most of what I got for that $12.37....

The store was holding an Instant Discount promo $5 off when you bought $15 worth of select house brand items.  I wasn't particularly interested in it until I went down the cereal aisle and saw that the house brand instant oatmeal packet boxes were included AND some had $1 Peelie Qs on them....squeal!!!
I bought 7 boxes of oatmeal($1.66 ea. on sale) + 3 bags of house brand frozen veggies($1.25 ea., not pictured), which subtotaled $15.37.  After 7 x $1 Qs and the $5 instant discount($12 off), I paid $3.37 for 7 oatmeals and 3 veggies(or .34¢ for each of 10 items).

While I was down the cereal aisle, store employees were changing around the coffee section located across from the oatmeal section.  By the time I was finished shopping and headed to the register, the clearance bin I walked by at the front of the store to check out was filled with bags of coffee.  I don't drink this stuff but Hubs is addicted to it so I nosed around in the bin.  New England Coffee, Starbucks and Eight O'Clock brands were marked down to $3 a bag.  Sell by/Use by dates were 2 years out.  I went back to the coffee section and it looks like the New England brand has changed the color of the bags and they were no longer carrying this particular Starbucks and the Eight O'Clock varieties(very small store with limited selections), so that explains why it was in the bin.  I also wanted to check the regular price to make sure that $3 a bag was a "deal".....I told you I don't know anything about coffee!lol
They sell for $7.95 a bag at this store.
So I "scooped" up 3 bags for Hubs and dinged my grocery budget for $9.

Now I know everyone is thinking, "Gee Sluggy, why the heck did you buy 7 boxes of oatmeal, since you won a year's supply from Price Chopper last Fall?  Isn't that enough for you??"
Actually, it's not enough.  I gave boxes to the B in-law and #1 Son, plus we've gone through a case already.  The only oatmeal we will have left when the year is out will be some of the canisters of whole oats since nobody thinks to make those for breakfast and I don't have a wide repertoire of recipes using oats.

So the food spending for January as of Saturday, sits at $261.21, leaving me $138.79 to get through the rest of the month......ok, the rest of the month would be 5 days. lol

As for leftovers rolling into this week--there are beets, ginger carrots, beef tips and gravy and noodles.  Not much to use up.

Here is what is getting served this week.....

Sunday--KFC chicken
Monday--Pizza or Leftover KFC or Beef Tips
Tuesday--Steak dinner out(birthday meal)
Wednesday--Italian dinner out(birthday freebie)
Thursday--Chicken Fajitas
Friday--Ham and Bean Soup, homemade bread
Saturday--Not sure, leftovers, fend for yourself

Only 2 meals this week, since we are finishing the Birthday freebies this week.  The KFC is courtesy of a gift certificate for a 12 pce. meal I won at the Church auction.  Wed. dinner is courtesy of a local Italian restaurant birthday club and I get a free appetizer on Tues. when I have my Birthday dinner out.  There will be money spent but from the Entertainment budget.

Needed at the store to serve the 2 meals I am making this week?
I'll need celery, potatoes, mushrooms(Daughter bought on Sunday), and I might need more onions.
Not much needed this week but there is a Pet Food Catalina Deal at Weis which I need to do, so there goes $30 up front after Qs(will give me a $10 Cat for later too).  I'll try to keep the spending under $50 this week.

I'll be going to my 2 grocery stores this week to note prices for the new Price Book.

What's on your menu for the week?  Any good deals at the grocers this week?
Did you have any food waste this week?
