Did Someone Say More Cowbell? The Week I Contracted Rite-Aid FEVER!

I am a BIG FAN of Christopher Walken.
Have been for years!

As Christopher might say....
"I got a fever, and the only prescription is more Rite-Aid!"

After having made TEN TRIPS to Rite-Aid in 1 week, it's true....I'm a bonafide nut case!

Or.....
Maybe with the sales, the Manu. Qs, the weekly flyer Qs, the IPQs, the AdPerk IPQs, the Wellness Qs & the Game Of Life Qs, it was just the alignment of the planets,er....the Qs, to make this past week the Couponers Dream shopping opportunity at Rite-Aid.

So by Friday, I had already made 5 trips to Rite-Aid and finished my Kraft/Planters Nut Rebate Mission.
But I still had good Qs to use and things on sale that I wanted to buy. Plus some items the teens had requested. ;-)
I had some $3 off $15 purchase Wellness Qs and some $5 off $20 purchase AdPerks Qs left so I was off to do more transactions.

Almost Free NAKED JUICE at WEIS MARKETS this Week!

Get your hiney over to Weis Markets this week(before the sale week ends on Wednesday night).
The 15.2 oz. NAKED JUICE bottles are on sale BOGO, so you get 2 for $2.99.
Go print this $1/1 Coupon HERE.  You can print it twice by hitting your back button.  If you can use a second computer, go print out 4 of the coupons.

Now go to Weis and buy 10 bottles, any flavor you like.
10 bottle with the BOGO sale will cost you $14.95.
Use 4 of the $1/1 Coupons and pay $10.95 OOP.

Now save your receipt and go HERE and download a copy of a Naked Juice Rebate Form.
Send in the information they need and the form and you will get back $10 on your purchase of 10 bottles.

$10.95 you spent - $10 Rebate=$.95 OOP for 10 Juices!

That's what I did today! ;-)
Of course, since my Weis won't take IPQs, I had to go to a different Weis outside of Teeny Tiny Town to get in on this deal.

Weis Deals this Week...1/7-1/13 What is Worth Buying?

Here are the Best Deals using coupons at Weis this week.  Their Sales ad runs until Wednesday night(will change over to Sunday to Saturday ad in a week or so).
Frankly, not as much of a snoozfest this week as last....MHO folks.lol

BEST DEALS(=Free or almost Free)

Tony's Single Serve Pizzas $1.00
--use the $.50/1 ManuQ(12/13SS insert)and if your Weis doubles pay ZERO...if you can find them.  My store is always wiped out when this is free after Q.

Yo-Plait or Yo-Plus Yogurt $1.50 each
--use the $1/1 ManuQ(1/3GM insert)and pay $.50 a pack(works out to .125¢ a cup)

Healthy Choice Soups $1.00
--use the $.75/2 ManuQ(1/3 SS2 insert)and if your Weis doubles pay $.50 a can or less if the store doubles fully

Purina Whisker Lickin's $1.00
--use the $1/2 ManuQ(11/15 SS insert)and pay $.50 a bag

Chapstick Lip Balm $1.00
--use the $.50/2 ManuQ(12/13 SS insert)and if your Weis doubles and they have the MEDICATED type, pay $.50 each when you buy 2

GOOD DEALS(=Cheap)

Green Giant boxed Veggies  $1.00
--use the $.60/3 ManuQ(11/15 GM insert-hurry it expires on Sat!)and pay $.67 a box if your store doubles up to $1(or less if they double fully)

Progresso Soup Classic varieties  $1.00
--use the $1/4 ManuQ(various ones out there) and pay $.75 a can

Healthy Choice Frozen Dinners  $2.50 each
--use the IPQ for $5/5 if still available HERE and pay $1.50 per Dinner  You do need to buy 5 however to use this Q.

PRODUCE DEALS

Romaine is $.99lb.  That's $1.50 off!  Good Deal.

Apples are $.69lb.  That's a Decent Deal.

MEAT DEALS

Perdue  40% OFF
--there is a $.75/1 Q on Perdue Shortcuts  due out this Sunday 1/10.  I'd hold off buying the Perdue until after Sunday.  Price...??

OTHER MEAT
Since meat coupons are so hard to come by, I recommend shopping the meat dept. on the night before or the morning after the Ad changeover.  This is when you are more likely to find discounted meat packs, either marked down or with store $x off stickers on them or if you hit it lucky with BOTH discounts!  I went to Weis on Wed. evening to use my Smart Taste Ronzoni Qs this week and found in the meat dept. a Pork Loin Roast marked about 50% off after store coupon, 80% Ground Beef for $1.72lb. after discount store coupon and 2 HUGE Roaster Chickens that had been BOGO that week, each with a $3Off Store Coupon on them.  And someone had NOT removed the BOGO stickers so I got 1 FREE and basically $6 off the other one.  Almost 14lbs. of Roasters for just over $5...that's $.39 a lb.!

CATALINA DEAL
Nothing.

Just.
Plain.
Sad.

OTHER DEALS

I do want to mention that Weis has NAKED JUICE on BOGO this week.  The regular price there is $2.99 a bottle.
Naked Juice has a $10 MIR available until 2/1/10.  Get the form Here.  Buy 10 bottles, Get $10 back.  If you were to buy them at Weis this week, you would pay $14.95 and after the rebate be OOP $4.95 on 10 bottles.
I think you might be able to do better elsewhere, but maybe not before 2/1.  I am conflicted on paying $4.95 for these.
Anybody out there ever try this stuff?  Let me know if it's worth drinking, ok?

So what are you or did you get this week at Weis?  Any deals there you couldn't pass up?
Leave a comment and let us know what ya found!

My 2010 Savings Goals

Ok, so it's a new year and I need a new set of Savings Goals for it.
But which goals.....and how much?

First, where we stand financially.

We have no mortgage, so no mortgage to pay toward or pay off.  We did that in March of 2006. 8-))
We have no car loans, so nothing to pay toward or pay off there either. 8-)
We have a credit card but it's paid off every month.  Nothing is put on it unless it can be paid that billing cycle.  We don't fritter the money away on making banks richer.  ;-)
We have a fully funded 6 month Emergency Fund(the reason we don't have to put emergency purchases on the credit card), so we don't need to throw money into that fund.  We could put some extra into that though and make it a 9 month or 1 year EF I suppose.

There are 3 Savings Goals I do see we should fund.

First is throwing additional money into the Kid's College Fund.  We have a plan that will allow us to Cash Flow each child's undergraduate college career(4 years to complete the degree). We have told each of them how much they are getting from us and they need to find a school that can be paid for with it or if they want to go somewhere more expensive, they need to come up with the money for the difference through either grants, scholarships, work study, loans or working while attending school.
Graduate school?....that's on their dime, not ours.
We had ESAs for each child but when the stock market fell, those took a hit.  I am hopeful they will recover enough in time before we need the cash so that I can take the money out without a net loss.
We had a cash flow plan with this College Fund but we may come up a bit short between how we are funding it and the exploding costs of schooling.  At any rate, this Fund could use a bit more moolah.

Second we are going to have to replace a car very soon.  Not a new car but a 'new to us' car.  And we will pay cash of course.

Third is paying for a new heating system for our house.  This house was built in the late 1980's.  At the time, the builder got a tax incentive to put a thermal storage heating unit in his homes here.  The electric company had a special lower off-peak/on-peak rate for these systems that helped homeowners have a lower electric bill than the regular electric customers.
This year, the electric company is phasing out this special rate(thank you cap and trade) and in 2011, they are doing away with it completely.  Also, these thermal storage systems were only expected to last 20-30 yrs.  2 of our heating receptables have already died, one at the beginning of last winter and the other at the end of it.  Replacing 1 electric thermal unit was in the ballpark of 5 Thousand Dollars!  There are 5 in the house, along with regular baseboard electrical units in the smaller rooms.   It makes no sense to replace the dead units since the special rate is going away and we'll be a totally electric home with incredibly high electric rates after this year.
So we need a new heating system before next fall when the heat gets turned on again!
Replacing your heating system is NOT cheap....especially if you aren't set up for gas and you have no ductwork in your house already.
Ugh.

I had wanted to put solar panels on the house but that will have to wait as the heating system is more critical.  And heating with solar just wouldn't be realistic at this location or within our financial scope.
At this point I am leaning toward a GeoThermal Heating System.  We may have a problem however, since you need to excavate and lay underground piping next to your house for this type of system and we have buried/underground utility lines here on the property.  We may not have the room for the pipes.

Since I was able to sock away $23K+ last year, I don't feel I should settle for less than that this year.
Tentatively, I am going to set a $30K Savings Goal for 2010.
That's $2500 a month.
I still need to go through the bills for last year and get some final numbers together so I can set a realistic Budget.
Then I need to research more on the heating system options and get some estimates.  How much this bill will cost may help determine what the Savings Goal will be for this year.....or then again, it might not.lol

More later on the Savings Goals after I get a final Budget together.
Have you set your family Budget for the year yet?
Do you have any savings goals for 2010?
Do you have a plan to reach those goals?
Please leave a comment and tell us!

Nuts to You!....Part I.....Free Food after Rebate

I completed the Keep the Jingle in Your Holidays $10 Nabisco/Planters/etc. Rebate for BIL last week, so I was looking at a way to do it frugally for me now.  I have until the end of January to purchase the 10 products to send for this Rebate.

And then I saw while in Rite-Aid on Tuesday(and after reading on the COUPONS DEALS AND MORE Blog, that some of the Planters nuts were BOGO and the "NUTrition" cans were on sale for $3.49 each.  The best part was the BOGO nuts included Cashews.....drool.....
I love cashews and use them often in cooking so this peaked my interest!
Hmmmmm......

I think I can use these nuts on sale this week to do this $10 Rebate AND I'll spend OOP LESS than $10 to do it!

So here is what I bought Wednesday to start my plan....

Rite-Aid this Week.......The Cough Syrup Made Me Do It!

So #1 son has been having allergy/sinus problems while home for college break.  He's on my last bottle of cough syrup in the house.
I went to Rite-Aid to get this.....

We love us some Delsym in this house!

At any rate, this stuff is NOT cheap.  The smaller bottle runs $10.49.  The house brand/generic of it runs $6.99.  But by using different types of coupons at Rite-Aid, and buying other stuff too I can use the overage from the coupons to get the Delsym brand for LESS than the generic brand's price.

Here's how I did it.....

I know the 2 Wellness Skin Care on the Lip Care items was pushing it, but the cashier and manager had no problem taking them.  Lips are skin, right?lol  I figured that if they wouldn't take those I could try the $2/1 Beauty Product Wellness Qs on the Nivea Lip care that is more of a Lip Gloss with color, hence a 'beauty' product.  Either way, I was going to try to get that $4 off those purchases.  This may be a YMMV situation though, depending on your store and manager.

I must say that once this Wellness Program comes to your area, DO SIGN UP!  Not only do they send you emails with links to PDF Wellness coupons to print, but you also will get Wellness coupons printed on the bottom of your CRT in the store.
Add in the AdPerks coupons you can sign up for, the $x off an $x Purchase coupons Rite-Aid releases now and again, store sales, Single Check Rebate items, and of course, Manufacturer's Qs, and you have just SO MANY opportunities to save money in that store!
And speaking of SCRs.....

This purchase qualified for these SCRebates.....

Weis this Week....What is Worth Buying 12/31/09-1/6/10

Here are the Best Deals using coupons at Weis this week.  I am a bit late so you have to get there by Wednesday night as the sale ends then.  Frankly, Weis is a snoozfest this week....MHO folks.lol

BEST DEALS(=Free or almost Free)
Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta  $1.25
--use the $.75/1 ManuQ and if your store doubles it's either FREE or if your store doubles up to $1 it's .25¢ a box

Yakisoba Noodles  $1.00
--use the $.50/1 ManuQ(10/18SS or last week's SS coupon)and if your store doubles it's FREE

GOOD DEALS(=Cheap)
All Detergent $3.99
--use the $2/1 ManuQ(12/6RP or 1/3RP) and pay $1.99

Sun Crystals  $2.00
--use the $1/1 ManuQ(11/1RP or last Sunday's insert RP) and pay $1.00 a box(50 ct.)

CATALINA DEAL
Buy assorted items(Progresso Soups/Progresso Panko Crumbs/Bunches of Fiber One items/Betty Crocker Warm Delights and/or Gluten Free Mixes/One-A-Day Vitamins/Slim-Fast bars/Ensure Drinks/etc.) Spend $20/Get a $7 OYNO Cat Coupon OR Spend $12/Get a $3 OYNO Cat Coupon

Remember to use the regular shelf price when calculating how much you have spent, Not the sale prices.  There are assorted Manu or IP Qs out there for these things.  Since I am interested in the Progresso and Fiber One items only IF I can get my butt to a Weis that will take IPQs I might do this deal.
But it's far from thrilling and I doubt I can get the totals using Qs down so that subsequent rolling of the Cat will be free or under $2, so I might pass if I can't get motivated.

The BIG NEWS with WEIS this week is they have announced they are going back to a Sunday to Saturday Weekly Sales Ad.  Yep, they are abandoning ship on the old Thursday to Wednesday midweek running Ads as of January 17th or so.

I am conflicted on this change.  On the one hand I always hated this midweek ad because there was never a sales flyer in the Sunday paper, just the midweek paper.  I don't buy mid week papers, just the Sunday one, so if I wanted an actual sales flyer to study I'd have to go to the store to get one just to plan my shopping there.  Which is an extra trip, wasting my gas and just an overall PITA.

The good side of mid week sales was if something was on sale and a coupon came out on Sunday, there was still a few days to get it using the coupon.  Some stores they put something on sale, sale runs Sunday to Saturday, and the day AFTER the sale ends, a coupon comes out.  Having 1 store run midweek, sometimes you could still get said item for cheaper at Weis since the ad was still running past Saturday.  I hope this makes sense.lol

At any rate, goodbye midweek ads, hello Sunday flyer in my paper again! ;-)

So what are you or did you get this week at Weis?  Any deals there you couldn't pass up?
Leave a comment and let us know what ya found!

Well, not quite as good as I would have liked but ok.  This is what happens when you don't take your calculator and have to rely on your brain.lol  I had and could have used 3 x $2/1 Wellness Beauty Q(since I had 3 beauty products), but since it was almost closing time on Saturday night, the staff had removed all the sale signage for the week's ad and I couldn't remember if the CoverGirl was BOGO or B1G50% 1, so I ended up being 6 cents short to use all 3 of my $2/1 Qs!ugh  If I had bought a pack of Ramen noodles or something similar in price I could have been OOP only .50¢ or so, for an approx. $1.50 Moneymaker.
Live and learn.

OUCH! It Hurts!

Daughter had 2 of her wisdom teeth removed this morning.  The Orthodontist wanted all 4 removed but the uppers weren't descended enough not to cause a possible problem removing them, as they were so close to her sinus cavity.

So we are starting 2010 with a $1175.00 Oral Surgery bill. 8-(
And at some point in the future, we get to do this all over again for the other 2 teeth....sigh....

Though my checkbook is feeling a bit poorer, Daughter is feeling fine at the moment as she has a prescription for Vicodin and Strawberry milkshakes as far as the eye can see.
Needless to say I haven't done much else today besides chauffer to the dr. and back, run for meds and shakes, prepare jellos in an assortment of flavors and make appropriate "you poor thing" noises at her.

I hope she either recovers quickly and WANTS to go back to school asap or she has enough pain, she wants the Vicodin and sleeps through the next 48 hours or so.
In the nursing department I am ok but that's with a cooperative patient.  Daughter does NOT fit the profile....lolol

I'm hoping to get around to posting my 2010 Hopes and Wishes, my Shopping Reports from late last week, and some other goodies I've been working on.
But that all will have to wait until later.  I need a nap and the rest of the family needs to eat so I've got to get hopping with other stuff.

Meal Plan Monday.....January 4th Edition....More Eating Down the Freezer

Last Week's Menu Postmortem...

All I can say is I had a great meal plan but except for the 1st 2 days, we didn't follow it.lol
Hubby was off from work for the week, kids off from school.....  Seems like most nights the teens all had other plans with friends so I did very little cooking.  Not saying that that's a bad thing now and again to get some time off from cooking!  I made a dent in the soup supply and hubby had plenty of leftovers to work on.
I did get rid of some meal-in-the-bag type things in the freezer that hubby and I ate. And one night he wanted fish and I didn't have it on the menu so we substituted fish from the freezer for the meatloaf.  So I have most of my Meal Plan already done for this week, as I'll just cook what I had planned last week and didn't get to and add in 2 fresh meals.

Here's what I will be serving our family of 5 this Week.....

MONDAY--Chicken Cashew Stir-Fry-this is from a kit(stockpile/freezer/using leftovers)
TUESDAY--Taco Salads or Tacos(diners choice)(freezer/stockpile)
WEDNESDAY--Date Night w/Hubby-the teens will fend for themselves
THURSDAY--Homemade Pizza(freezer/stockpile), Salad
FRIDAY--Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf for #1 son(freezer), Mashed Potatoes(stockpile), Cauliflower/Carrots/Broccoli(freezer)
SATURDAY--BBQ Chicken(freezer), homemade Mac & Cheese(stockpile/freezer), Peas(freezer)
SUNDAY--Chicken Alfredo(stockpile/freezer), Green Beans(freezer)
SNACKS/DESSERTS--Pineapple, Brownies, Cookies, Pecan Pie

Last week I spent $72.52 on food/toiletries. $38.33 was at the grocery Outlet, $24.63 was at Price Chopper(Seltzer sale/Nabisco Crackers which will end up costing $1 after rebate/$1lb. boneless pork loin), and $12.88 at Rite-Aid(which will net me $13.12 MORE than I spent after rebates). Beyond the milk/juice at the Outlet none of what I bought was necessities last week. We were almost out of seltzer and it was finally on special, the crackers were for the rebate, replenishing some spices, garlic and other grocery items, plus great deals on fish and breaded chicken strips at the Outlet and 8lbs. of pork loin for $8 at PC.  Stock up Opportunities that just popped up and I just went for it.  After the rebate money comes in my $72.52 will end up costing $36.52 OOP.  The Regular Retail Value of all these items purchases amounted to $282.72, a savings of 74.35% on the $72.52 spent or 87.08% after rebates so I feel I spent the money wisely.

Food Waste Report....no waste this week, beyond the usual veggie parings into the compost.  Hubby was working hard to eat all the leftovers before going bad....and he succeeded!lol
By next Monday I should be able to do my full Freezer DeFrost and Inventory if I cook all this week's meals.

This week's menu doesn't require many grocery purchases, since it's last weeks menu and I have most of it already.& I'll need to pickup milk and fresh salad greens as I am almost out. Daughter had her wisdom teeth out this morning so I'll need to get a few things for her as she's on a liquid/soft food diet and needs jello/pudding/yogurt/applesauce for a couple of days.  The grocery ads this week here are pretty lame so I'm not tempted there.  I'll have to make a Rite-Aid run later today for the "SCR deals" and I might venture back to Wags and/or CVS this week.  I'll try to keep the expenditures low.

Check out ORGANIZING JUNKIE to see what other Home Cooks are serving this week.

$60K Savings Challenge DECEMBER Totals & The Year End TOTAL

I have posted my DECEMBER End of Month 60K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the side bar to your right(near the bottom) for the specific numbers.

We had another Excellent month growing our Savings in December!

I have to report that we finished up December in the Black again.

The amount we ended the month of December with was..........$2,104.79!
And that amount was AFTER Christmas spending so I am pretty excited for the total.

Besides Hubby salary we had a hefty amount in Rebates, some rolled Coins and I sold a few things on eBay.  While not a large sum of money, it does add up and help to beef up the savings amount.

As for the expenses in December.....
The electric bill jumped $60 from November, as December was quite a bit colder overall here and the heat was on full time.
The water bill jumped $17 from last month. No explanation for that one.
All other regular bills...Cable, Internet, Phone, etc. are the same each month.

The Food Budget costs for December are in another post, which is located HERE.  Food/Toiletries spending in December was low after rebate income was figured in and compared to the value of the items bought we saved just over 92%.

We had some out-of-the-ordinary expenses in December.  There was Christmas & daughter's birthday spending(gifts, travel, special food, etc.), though we didn't spend all of the $800 we budget for that so we are under on that expense.
But there were unexpected bills such as--the veterinary hospital($182.90), an electrician visit($109.55), an additional car insurance fee($209.51)since the daughter got her license this month, and 2 car repairs/maintenance bills($1072.94).  If not for these $1574.90 in unusual expenses, the amount to put into savings would have been 50% larger.

The credit card bill, which is paid off EVERY MONTH,($826.58) wasn't very high considering 1/3 of that Dec. bill was Christmas gifts bought early and now are paid for already.  We only have about $170.00 in Christmas & Birthday purchases that will be on the January credit card bill.

The way things turned out, those unusual expenses I was anticipating having to pay out on in December are going to be due in January instead.  These would include Oral Surgery for both Daughter and #2 Son and Orthodontic Work for #2 Son.  It will be a very expensive month for our family's teeth. 8-(

At the end of TWELVE MONTHS of this $AVING$ Challenge, and we have a Savings Grand Total of $23,865.36  for the Year!

While it is nowhere close to the $60 THOUSAND I shot for, I am pretty pleased with the Total we were able to save.  Believe me when I tell you that every penny of that is safely snuggled into an account earning interest.

So what exactly is $23,865.36?

$23,865.36 is paying CASH for a Nice Car!
Not that I would ever spend it that way.lol

$23,865.36 is a total kitchen remodel or a bathroom addition on your home for CASH!
Ok, this is a way I might consider spending it.

$23,865.36 is sending your kid to college for a Year with NO LOANS!
Oh yeah, that's a most excellent way to use that money.

$23,865.36 is paying off a car loan, a student loan, a second mortage or line of credit, or putting on the principle on your mortgage so you are one step closer to being DEBT FREE!

$23,865.36 is a ready made CASH Emergency Fund so that the next time Life hits you with a money emergency, Life can't kick your ass and make you put that emergency on a credit card!

So how was your December financially?  Leave a comment and share with us what you did with your money, both the good and not-so good.   Do you have any tricks or tips that help you to end your month before the money runs out?  Let us know!

And what are your plans for your money in 2010?  Do you have a Budget or some kind of Plan for your Money laid out IN WRITING for 2010?  It's time to start thinking about how to get a fresh start to Financial Freedom in the new year!  You need to let your money know what you expect it to do for you.  If you don't, your money will do what it wants and just fritter away.  Don't be left standing at the end of 2010 with nothing to show for all your hard work!
Make a plan!
Do it NOW!!

STOCKPILE Cheers & Jeers for 2009

So how did you do with your Stockpile in 2009?
While I've always had a pantry of foodstuffs & a closet of toiletry extras, this year was the first time I had stocked and maintained an actual Stockpile of food and toiletries.

My Best Stockpile Buys for 2009....

1. Marcal Small Steps FREE Toilet Paper/Napkins/Facial Tissue
2. FREE Bags of Iams Dog Food
3. Sugardale Bacon for $1 a package
4. Free or almost free Gillette Products
5. Free Crest Toothpaste (large hauls from Weis and Wags)

My Worst Stockpile Ideas for 2009....

1. Free or almost Free Soy Joy
2. Free or Under $1 Cold Cereal
3. Free Diabetic Meters
4. Moneymaker BC Fruit Snacks
5. Almost Free Kraft Salad Dressing (good to get but just not so many at one time)

My Toiletries Stockpile went from this in March....

To this in early October.......wait for all the photos  lol......

those photos are a 2 year supply organized and put away.
There was also THIS EXCESS STUFF beyond that 2 year supply....

Those 18 Boxes and a few Bags of stuff are what ended up going to the Flea Market in October and this is ALL that came home with me from there.....

The Flea Market Report is HERE if you'd like to read about it again.

My Toiletries Stockpile multiplied faster than Bunnies in those 7 months from March to October!
It got out of hand so fast!!
And that amount of Excess Stuff is AFTER I had a Garage Sale in July too!lolol
So with what I sold at the Garage Sale added in, the overall stockpile was even larger than what you see in the photos!

And just to remind you......this is JUST THE TOILETRIES STOCKPILE!
I'm not even talking about the FOOD STOCKPILE/PANTRY.
Oh, you don't even want me to show you photos of that!!

So, what is the state of my stockpile today?
I still have my 2 year Toiletries supply organized and put away.  I've added a few things to it that we weren't stocked up on, but not more than I have room for in the organized storage.
But more excess has crept back in.
Excess meaning free stuff we don't need more of....like toothpaste, shampoo, soap, razors.....

My Toiletries Stockpile Goal in 2010 is to replenish as we use up items in the 2 year supply.
I am also going to try to only "buy" other toiletry items if they are free or $1 or less with coupons/sales.
I will collect these other toiletry items until May, at which time I'll evaluate how to dispose of them-by either donating them and/or setting up at a flea market again.

So what state is your Toiletries Stockpile in?
The new year would be a good time to take stock of what you have, what you need, organize it and see what you need to get rid of by donating, selling or passing on to neighbors or friends in need.

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month-
With the high amount of income from Rebates received I was able to have a low out of pocket for this month.  While an OOP of $330.31 for food spending for a month is good, just over $100 after the rebates are applied is GREAT!
I was able to stay our of the grocery store for almost 2 weeks total this month and we ate through quite a bit of food in the freezer...food in the stockpile?....not so much.   I made headway in my USE IT UP CHALLENGE but we have more to use up.

What's ahead for January 2010.....
Since I have #1 son home for most of this month and my Sis-In Law is coming to stay for a week mid month, I should be able to continue to eat down in the Freezer and Stockpile.  The SIL though will prove to be problematic for my food budget as she eats from a very narrow selection of foods so the challenge for that week is to come up with meals that include these few foods but are acceptable to my family's palette as well.  I am trying very hard to avoid having to cook TWO meals each night!  Two meals will mean more waste and more cost.

The January 2010 Food/Toiletries Budget is set at $200 cash out of pocket.  Any rebates received this month will offset this OOP spending.  This means that I have UP TO $200 of regular income to spend on the food budget and any rebates that are received are added to that budget.  (IE; If $150 in rebates are received in Jan. so I'll have $350 to spend on food shopping this month.)If I don't spend all the money in the budget in January, I'll carry over whatever is leftover into February's food budget.

How did you do in December with your Food Budget?  Leave a comment or link to your post and let us hear!  By sharing our struggles and efforts we can help each other stick to our budgets and learn to be better guardians of our resources.

The Couponing Year in Review....My List of Deal FLOPS in 2009

Now that we are safely into 2010....
Here is my Rant about what I consider to be the DEAL FLOPS of 2009.  I kept it to 12 items.  Wish I had less to report in on.lolol

COUPONING DEAL FLOPS & FAILURES FOR ME IN 2009.

1.Natural Dentist Rebate

THIS is the ONLY Rebate I sent away for in 2009 that DID NOT HONOR THEIR OFFER.
A great big Phhhht!! to you Natural Dentist. Your products are WAY overpriced and work like crap! This is one consumer who is NEVER BUYING another of your products. I hope your company goes belly up and fast!

Me disgruntled?
Nahhhhh....

2. KFC GRILLED CHICKEN GIVEAWAY

Offering a Free Meal to anyone in America on 1 certain Day to advertise your new healthier chicken option. How did you think this would NOT turn into a Major Cluster Copulation?lol

What a big fiasco that probably ended up costing KFC millions more than they had envisioned and caused hard feelings with the public. They did do a good job of damage control though by offering subsequent FREE MEALS with a FREE DRINK a few months later.

3. LEE JEANS GIVEAWAY

In December Lee Jeans held a Giveaway via Facebook for a FREE Pair of Jeans. They gave away in the neighborhood of 150 pairs a day for most of the month.  I'm not sure what the deal was, but the Way to Enter the Giveaway changed after the Giveaway began, so Lee made a rules change on the Giveaway. This led to an unfair advantage for some entrants, so Lee declared that if you entered the contest before a certain date and time, you are an automatic winner.

This has been very confusing for the entrants and has led to a lot of hard feelings among the public.
This will cost Lee Jeans massive amounts of product and has done damage to their business's image.
And in case you are wondering, I entered but missed the cut-off under the Original Entry Rules by 45 minutes to get a free pair automatically.lol

4. BEE Md REBATE

A new cough drop product, Bee MD, offered a $1 Mail-In Rebate this year. After you paid for the postage, the ink to print the rebate form and the cost of an envelope, your gain was about 50¢. A full price rebate would have been worth sending away for, not 50¢. Thanks for nothing Bee MD! Luckily Rite-Aid offered this item as a FAR(=Free After Rebate) plus you didn't have any mailing costs associated with the rebate if you sent for it online.

5. KMart Kellogg's $5 CEREAL GIFT CARD REBATE

Back in March or April, Kmart offered a Kellogg's Cereal Catalina Deal. You had to buy 10 boxes of Cereal and submit in a rather short time frame receipts, form and 10 UPCs to qualify for a Whopping $5 Gift Card. $5....not even cash but a KMart Gift Card. Lots of product to buy and mailing costs for $5GC. Not such a great deal, but if your KMart held Double Coupon Events, you could have gotten the 10 boxes of cereal for cheaper during the DCE and saved the $5 GC to use during a subsequent DCE, it was an ok offer.

6. ConAgra "GREAT TASTE BIG SAVINGS OFFER"

Don't quite remember what I had to buy for this....5 certain items?.....but I sent away and there were no FREE Item Coupons or any Cash Rebate involved. All you got was 5 coupons for items I don't buy/use much if at all and the amounts were crappy too. Of the big corps. out there, ConAgra has not impressed me with any of their offers-EVER! Kraft, Kelloggs, Unilever offer some good ones....ConAgra, notsomuch.

ConAgra....feh!

7. The lack of FREE TURKEY DEALS at area Grocery Stores

Use to be, it was a given that once Thanksgiving time rolled around(and sometimes at Christmas too), your local grocery stores, both big and small, would offer some kind of FREE TURKEY DEAL. Either you had to spend a certain amount during a certain time period at their stores or you had to buy certain items and be a frequent/loyalty card shopper to qualify. In the last 2 years, 2 years that have seen consumers earnings fall and food prices rise significantly, these Holiday Free Turkey deals have all but vanished. Locally the best you can do is a reduced price for Turkey with a qualifying purchase at Price Chopper. The only Grocery Chain I found offering FREE TURKEY when you spent $Xs was Acme and that is NOT a local chain here. Luckily, it was also running at the same time as a Spend $30/Get $15 Catalina Deal at Acme, and since I went to Acme for that Cat Deal, I got a free turkey as well.

The WORST Thanksgiving Scheme locally was at WEIS. During the pre-Thanksgiving time period you could qualify for a % off 1 Shopping Trip. The more you spent during the qualifying time period, the larger your % off that Shopping Trip. The Shopping Trip & % off Discount had to be taken within a short time at the end of the qualifying period too. So you had to spend something like $300 on groceries and then the week after you qualified by buying $300 worth of food, you got a 5% discount on your next trip. Now, maybe it's just me, but if I have bought $300 of groceries, I really don't need A LARGE AMOUNT of food in my next shopping trip, so coincidentally, my actual savings on the 5% discount trip won't amount to very much saved. Buy $300 in food......make your discount % trip and spend $100.....get $5 whole dollars off. In the end you've spent $400 and you've saved $5....which is a Savings of only 1.25%!!! When they gave FREE TURKEYS out instead, figuring $.99 a lb. on a modest sized 18lb. turkey, you were saving $17.82 for those qualifying purchases.
Thanks for NOTHING WEIS!

Which leads us to #8 on the list....

8. The Local WEIS Grocery Store

Not only does the WEIS chain hold crappy Thanksgiving Promotions and half-hearted Catalina Deals or better yet, Catalina Deals for items when their are NO AVAILABLE COUPONS for these items, but my local WEIS store is even more stingy with savings.

In this enlightened computerized digital age, my local Weis store has an owner/manager who REFUSES to ACCEPT INTERNET PRINTED COUPONS! My guess is that since the local teeny tiny independent Grocery Store in our town also does NOT accept IP Qs that they feel they don't need to honor these valid forms of couponage either. But the head scratcher here is that 1--every other Weis store in the chain DOES accept IP Qs and 2--the WEIS Website offers printable Coupons that I can't print and use at my local WEIS location! Yes, their own website says, "Here! Have these coupons and use them at Weis." and the store management says, "NO! You can NOT use those coupons here!"

Why does WEIS Allow this store to remain part of their Chain?
Whatever.....WEIS has lost a lot of my business over this year that other Grocery Stores are more than happy to accept.

9. Local WALGREEN'S

First they did away with the Easy Saver Rebate Program mid year and as of now have NOT replaced it with anything.

My other problem with Walgreens has been 2 fold....1-having LARGE AMOUNTS of employees who do NOT know the Coupon Policy or how the REGISTER REWARDS really work. The people who run the store, the MANAGERS here on the whole, have NO CLUE how it works. The worst thing is they misinform the staff and the employees give out wrong information constantly. I have been in line and heard some of it first hand. Oh brother!lol I can guess that the arguments and embarrassment these employees cause some non-confident customers works against Walgreens profits. Some customers choose not to go back and find somewhere else to shop. I have found overall, the employees that are most likely to actually know how to take coupons properly and know how the Cats work are the full time Cashiers! They are also the only employees that are TRAINED in how to run the registers, the Managers are mostly clueless on how to operate a cash register correctly!lol

And 2-never having the Register Reward Items on the shelves. The RR item Deals run hot and cold for me....some weeks what's a deal is great and some weeks I couldn't care less about getting a deal. It really doesn't matter though since no matter what RR Deal item I want, it is always sold out. Locally, it's probably a case of too many customers wanting their deals and not enough stores to stock it. We only have 2 Wags within an hour's drive here. This area is not lousy with Walgreen's yet. I am hoping that if they have a few more stores locally, it will be easier to get in on some of their deals. Let's just hope they train their employees on how the RRs really work.

10. Local TARGET...or lack thereof

Target makes the list for basically the same reasons as Walgreens. 1--employees who are clueless on the coupon policy or even worse, employees who don't care about the coupon policy and enjoy giving people who use coupons a hard time! Now that Target has officially come out with an "In Writing" Coupon Policy it's a little easier for couponers and we don't have to stand there and let some coupon-hating cashier look down their nose at us! We can just whip out our copy of the Q Policy, look them in the eye and INSIST on our coupon discounts at the register.

2--Again, there is ONE Target here for 50 miles so unless you are there waiting in line for the doors to open on the morning a sale starts, you are SOOL on finding that deal on the shelves. I won't be held hostage like that so I generally avoid Target unless I happen to be over there. I NEVER expect to get any deal at Target so I am never dissappointed anymore when it happens.

11. TERRIBLE Coupons in Local Newspapers

Living in an area where the Marketing gods give us bad coupons or don't give us coupons at all for certain products is not something in my control. It sucks and it's something you have to find a way to work around. It causes me at times to have to spend more to buy Sunday papers from other regions or to have to spend money ordering from a clipping service or off of eBay.

12. ME+No Restraint on Which Deals I Did=Overspending & Waste

Buying things just because they are FREE or buying things for FREE or cheap to get something else for FREE has got to be my Shopping Achilles Heel. At least now I recognize this is a problem for me, so I can be aware of making better choices.
In 2010 I hope to be more aware of whether my shopping choices are wise or not.

So what do you consider the Deal Flops of 2009?
What did you buy that your regret you spent the money on now?
Leave a comment and let us know what the losers were for you.
