This Week on the Dining Table

The "Broccoli  Boy" Edition....

Ok, so I had lots of broccoli stems leftover after I chopped up the heads to put into my Veggie Lasagna last week.  I tried to see if Chester would eat them.
Yup!  It seems he LOVES broccoli as much or more than green beans. lolz

One trip to Weis and a trip to the Amish Grocery Outlet brought the food spending last week to $78.99 and my May total to $219.27.

My savings percentage last week was 50.09%(without Rite-Aid trips)and May's monthly savings total came to 50.71%(w/out R-A).

I have 18 more food shopping/spending days in May.

Leftovers going into this week.....rolls, fajita filling, ham and beans.

Here is this week's "food plan".....

This week will see 3-? new meals cooked, ? nights of leftovers/FFY, and ? nights of Take-Out/Eating Out.
My brother is coming for Holly's graduation(for 5 days)and I have to figure out what he'll eat so that's throwing a wrench into the meal planning.

What needs buying for this menu?
Through Wednesday it's all good. After that?....No clue yet. My brother is a picky eater.  I don't want to have to go out for 4 dinners so I've got some thinking to do.
I know he'll eat steak and we've got some in the freezer plus the pork tenderloins I got last week but I can't serve steak or pork for 4 nights. lolz

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

Any great deals on food at your stores this week?

A Survivor's Story....Part Three, Things Go From Bad to Worse

Read Part 1 of this story here PART ONE
Read Part 2 of this story here PART TWO

So the murder trail of Richard Randolph and his sister in-law Nancy Randolph was over and they were both acquitted.
So it was back to their normal life.....or was it?

Though legally they were free and clear, the notoriety it brought on the families was altogether something else.

Not only was there the stigma that the unmarried Nancy had become pregnant and either miscarried or given birth to a stillborn infant but society of that time wasn't able to get past the murder trial.
There was no way for Nancy to stay among her social peers and have any hope of marrying within her social set and having the only type of life a woman of her standing in the late 1700's could hope for.  In that time the only thing a woman had going for her was her virginity and her good name.  Nancy now had neither and it was a widely known fact.  No proper young suitor would be trying to court her.

Unwed and widowed women in that time and culture were the burden born of their extended families.
Until a woman married she was either under the control of her father(and mother to an extant)or if her father was dead, she became the ward of another male relative-either a brother who was of age, an uncle, a grandfather, a nephew or some other male relation.  Very few women could own property outright, they certainly couldn't vote, or even enter into a legal contract during this time.

A young and attractive(and even better if her husband had left her with property/wealth)widow could still hope to remarry if a suitable societal match could be found.

Nancy had no hope of every making a proper marriage match now.  To be 17-18 years old and to know that your best days were behind you.....never to have a husband or your own family.  Nancy could only live at the pleasure of your male benefactor's whims for the rest of her days.

      Painting of Nancy Randolph in later years.

So Nancy continued to live at "Bizarre" Plantation with Richard and Judith and their two sons, John St. George Randolph(named after Richard's beloved stepfather St. George Tucker)and Theodorick Tudor Randolph(named for Richard's deceased brother and Nancy's secret betrothed and/or for Richard's maternal grandfather, Theodorick Bland).

Society was very strict place in Colonial times.  You associated with those in your social circle and you married within that circle or you didn't marry.  For the Founding Families in Colonial Virginia this meant a very small pool of folks from which to choose a spouse.  People did not move around and people did not as a rule travel far from where they were born so the available potential marriage partners were located within say 100 miles of where you lived.

And with these families, more than not, having a great number of children, who in turn, married cousins of varying degrees to themselves, the gene pool began to break down, much like the farmlands in Colonial Virginia did by the turn of the 19th century.

The Randolphs of Virginia were notorious for marrying within their extended family. Richard's brother, Theodorick died of consumption.  Consumption or Pulmonary Tuberculosis has long been thought to be one of the common side effects too close intermarriage within a family.
Richard and Judith's sons-John St. George Randolph(called St. George or as he was known within the family "St. John")was born deaf(another genetic defect)and Theodorick Tudor(called Tudor)also died at a young age of TB.

Tobacco had been successfully and commercially cultivated since 1612 in Virginia.  Tobacco is a bothersome crop in terms of the nutrients it takes from the soil.  But in the 1600's our forefathers knew nothing of crop rotation and such, so soils were depleted after a few seasons of tobacco and new fields had to be hacked out of the forests and put into use.  Tobacco by the 1790's was in decline as a cash crop, being replaced by the cotton trade which  flourished further South in the Delta lands.  To be successful with tobacco farming at this point in time meant continually buying more and more land to plant, and land in Virginia was getting quite expensive and these grand plantations, after primogeniture passed out of favor in the Colonies after the Revolutionary Way, got broken up or sold away.  The Landed Gentry Class in Virginia was hanging on by a thread by the 1790's.

Bizarre was founded by Richard's grandfather, Richard Randolph of Curles.  Upon Richard of Curles death, Bizarre would have gone to his son, John Randolph of Mattoax, Richard's father, but since John was dead, the plantation went to his son, Richard.
So Judith, Richard and their children lived life at Bizarre along with their relation Nancy.
Judith was not convinced that Richard and Nancy had/were still having an affair so she slowly simmered a hatred toward her sister Nancy.  After the trial Judith had written to the cousin they had been visiting at Glenlyvar when Nancy had given birth, Mary Harrison, "My health is very bad, indeed so much have I suffered lately, both in body and mind that I much fear that a few months will put an end to my troubles in this world, neglected and thrown off by all whom I once fondly relied on".

A mere three years after the scandalous trial ended Richard Randolph lay near death in June of 1796.  There are stories that still persist about that time.  One tale says that Judith changed the amount of ingredients in a concoction to alleviate Richard's pain which brought on his death.  Judith told Nancy to fix this altered potion and give it to Richard but then slipped the original recipe into Nancy' apron pocket thereby framing her once Richard passed and questions began to be asked.

Another story goes that Nancy knew Judith was trying to poison Richard but she was too afraid of Judith to say anything and expose her.

Still other's say Judith and Nancy were in cahoots to bring on Richard's end.

There was a witness to this macabre scene playing out, an English traveler who had come to Bizarre with a letter of introduction from yet another famous family member, Colonel Beverly Randolph(the 8th Governor of Virginia).  This traveler asked why Judith had not sent for a doctor yet to help Richard.  As a thunderstorm boomed large Judith replied that the doctor wouldn't come until the storm had passed.  Once the doctor arrived the next day Judith insisted on nursing Richard but it seems she didn't give him the medicines that the doctor prescribed but her own potions. Richard Randolph died within 2 days after that, a month past his 26th birthday.
We will never know what hand Judith and/or Nancy had in Richard's death or even what killed him.

After Richard's death the lone surviving Randolph brother, John Randolph of Roanoke inherited Bizarre but he spent very little time there.  Judith, Nancy and the two children, John St. George and Theodorick Tudor lived together at Bizarre in isolation from most of their family and society.  Between Judith and her brother in-law John Randolph, they spent the rest of their lives vilifying Nancy, blaming her for Richard's demise and twisting Judith's sons young minds against Nancy.

Once Richard died Judith became emboldened toward her sister Nancy.  She began to take away all of Nancy's privileges.  She no longer had free run on the plantation and house.  She no longer was allowed to ride the plantation's horses(one of the joys of her life), could no longer play the drawing room harpsichord, or given leisure time for reading.  She was forced to take all her meals in the kitchen or in her bedroom and not in the dining room with the boys and Judith.

For the next 12 years Nancy lived as a servant at Bizarre.  She was expected to work from rising until Judith went up to bed every night and to stay out of Judith's sight.  Nancy was expected to empty the chamber pots every morning so that "it would free up a slave to do other work" in Judith's words.  Nancy spent a lot of time in needlework(probably one of the few useful skills she had)when she wasn't reduced to menial labor like a slave.
Judith's mental state deteriorated over those 15 years and she was reported to suffer convulsions and fits.
The final straw came when a note Nancy had written to a literate slave named Billy fell into Judith's hands.  Nancy had written, "Dear Billy Ellis" and had asked him to polish the andirons.  In Judith's twisted mind she was convinced Nancy was having sex with this slave.  After screaming at Nancy Judith had Billy whipped, Nancy locked in her room until John Randolph could be sent for.
Upon hearing from Judith, John ordered Nancy to leave Bizarre plantation and never return.

In the year 1808, at the age of 33-34, Ann Cary "Nancy" Randolph left Bizarre, her home for the last 19 years.  Both her parents were long dead and she had no relationship with her father's second wife who was only 2 years older than Nancy, and the reason she had fled her father's home 19 years ago. Nancy had no relatives who would take her in being a social pariah and nowhere to go and no financial support.

Part Four next time..........

Frugal Friday......the May 10th Edition

Taking a look around Chez Sluggy here are the frugal wins I see............

*  I sent my $15 rebate stuff in.............

Copied and mailed it all in early in the week so let's see how long this one takes.

*  I got these in the mail this past week..........

I sent away for 2 $100 Lowe's gift cards using credit card points and they arrived this week.
$200 of free money to work on home projects this Summer?  Yes, please!

*  Tuesday we hit the garden nursery we like..........

I bought a flat of plants....3/4 of which were veggies-cucumber, squash, broccoli, cauliflower and 4 different tomato varieties-Brandywine(like a beefsteak), Cherokee purple, Amish paste and an Early something.  2 tomato varieties for eating fresh and two for canning.
Spend a little on plants to have fresh veggies this Summer.

The back bed is all planted now.  Once the rain clears out early next week the few tomato plants in the front bed will go in.

*  When we were out on Tuesday we hit the Amish Grocery Outlet....

I picked up some deals plus bottled water and sparkling seltzer.  The mac and cheese cups were .50¢ for 2 cup packs so I got a couple for Ex-College Boy.  The chili beans were .39¢ a can and the family loves them in the chili I make.  The taters and meal kits are for Hubs to make when I am not cooking.

I got lots of other things not pictured like cornbread mix, Asian sauces, fresh blueberries and strawberries, roasted red pepper cream cheese, eggs for .59¢ a dozen, etc.
I didn't go looking for any frozen foods but I had to get these.............

2 x Smithfield frozen mesquite pork loins.  They were 1.7 lbs. each and cost $2.19! That's less than .10¢ an ounce for meat!
If my brother and his wife do come for Daughter's graduation next week I'll serve these up for a meal then.  If not they'll stay in the freezer for awhile. ;-)

*  I used my Rite-Aid Bonus Cash Gas Reward to fill my car..........

6.669 gallons for free, thank you Rite-Aid!  I shouldn't have to get anymore gas for my car in May now.
I have another one of these cards to use before June is over.

*  I got the Weis(PMITA)Markets Friday Freebie last Friday........

A packet of Free taco seasoning.  Not something I use(too much salt!)but if the men folk will be cooking for themselves soon they will need it.....well, Hubs will need it as he can open a packet but he won't look up a recipe and make his own seasoning for tacos. lolz

*  I did hit Rite-Aid on Wednesday and picked this up.............

2 x Softsoap hand soap w/20% Wellness Discount(better than the sale price)=$5.42
I used a $1/2 ManuQ from the Sunday inserts and 2 x $2/1 In-Ad RAQ so $5 off.
.42¢ + .03¢ sales tax=.45¢ OOP paid with Bonus Cash.

*  I found money this week!

.25¢ in the washing machine from an unknown person's pants.

And I found this .02¢ in the drive-thru line at McDonald's when I went to get a $1 drink on a day out.
It was lunch rush so the line was so slow I could stop the car, undo the seat belt, open the door, get out and snag the money and get back in before the line moved again. lolz

That's about it from here.

Any frugal wins at your place this week?
Tell us all about it. 8-)))

Dollar General Clearance Sale

So last Friday to Sunday Dollar General stores had a 50% off Clearance Sale.  Anything marked down as clearance was an additional 50% off.
This is the first time I went to one of these sales but go, I did early Saturday morning.  I might haven't gotten some better things(like toilet paper)if I had gone on Friday morning but I wanted to pair these deals with that "$5 off when you spend $25" Coupon in my digital Q account for DG stores.

Here is what I got, first the non-food stuff,,,,,

I got the 5 air fresheners(car ones-2 single ones and a 3 pack), the .45¢ Renuzit and the $1.25 Glade candle for our use.  All the generic Airwick refills I picked up for my Sister in-law as she uses them in her mom's bathroom.  She buys them when she sees them cheap at yard sales but these were super cheap so I had to buy them for her and she'll reimburse me.  8-)
The garbage bags are for us as well.  $1.80 for a box of 25 garbage bags?  Couldn't say no to that!

A got 2 x boxes of Band-Aids for .50¢ each. The Old Spice body wash and the DG body wash were $1.80 each(the DG one wasn't the best deal but I like that scent), the Bic single razors were .37¢ a pack, Head & Shoulders conditioners were $3 each and the Secret deodorants were $2.25.
I paired Qs w/the Secret and Head & Shoulders so those were $1.25 and $1.50 each respectively.

I got some canned foods, 6 cans of baked beans, 2 cans of a mix of tomato/okra/corn, 2 cans of dumplings and chicken and 2 bottles of buttermilk ranch Hidden Valley salad dressing.  The dressing is for Ex-College Boy' and the other canned goods were for Hubs when I go on this elimination diet and he has to fend for himself with cooking.
Some of this was a good deal, some not so much.  Many items were NOT marked so I had to keep asking for a price check.  Perhaps I'll try a different store next time instead.

I think I did alright given that I also got another $5 off it all since it came to over $25 before that $5 off $25 Q.

Will I go and do a Clearance sale at DG again?  Maybe.  But I'll be a bit more discerning with what I bring home.

Have you ever gone to a Dollar General clearance event?

April To-Do List.....Update

We had a pretty long To-Do List for April so let's see how things turned(or didn't turn)out..........

*  Pay Bills--DONE  Everything got paid early or on time.

*  Read 1,2,3 Books--DONE  I had time leftover after reading my 2 books so I read a 3rd small book.

"George Washington and Benedict Arnold-A Tale of Two Patriots" by Dave R. Palmer
It's a more thorough history of the life of Benedict Arnold than any I have read before(not that there are many BA books to begin with).  It delves into his part in our American history and his intersecting history with another American Patriot that is revered today, George Washington.  You will learn many things in this book that I am sure, unless you are a American Revolutionary scholar, you didn't know and they don't teach in school about Benedict Arnold.
Did you know that George Washington thought Benedict Arnold was the best battle tested and valuable General in the Continental Army?  That had the Northern campaign of 1775 to take Quebec from the English of which Arnold helped spearhead had been successful, what was Canada at that time may have become America's 14th state?  Just a couple of nuggets of information contained in this book.
Written by a former Lt. General of the US Army and a past commander of West Point, the author Dave Palmer is well versed in and knows his territory here.

My take away from this-had Arnold's character been less flawed(who of us is perfect?)and there had been less backbiting and in fighting between and among the American military staff and the Continental Congress(even then the politicians added little to our progress!)would Arnold have become a turn coat?
It raised a lot of questions about how our history could have been different if certain dominoes hadn't fallen in the way they did.
Four thumbs up(if you like history).

"Presto!-How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales"  by Penn Jillette.
I love books by people who think outside the box and have a non-conformist outlook on life.  Jillette is funny as heck, profane and a Libertarian to boot so how could I NOT read this when I saw it at Ollie's(Good Stuff Cheap!)?!?
Besides anecdotal stories and ramblings about his life/outlook it's all about how, when faced with a life/health crisis he took his life into his own hands and make big health changes(and thus lost over 100 lbs.).  It pretty much spurned me on to take charge of my health and medical issues and attempt to make my own changes.
Even if you aren't contemplating health issues and changes it's a very interesting read.
Four thumbs up.

"You Can Stay Home With Your Kids!-100 Tips, Tricks and Ways To Make It Work On A Budget" by Erin Odom

This book took me a couple of hours to finish as there wasn't much new information here.  the author runs a blog which is highly subsidized and commercialized(her husband quit his job to help run the blog so it has to furnish a living for their family).  I don't fault her for her blog, she is doing what she has to do to make it profitable.  I just don't think her blog has much in the way to help someone else stay home with their kids.
The title-about making it work on a budget-is silly. Of course you need a budget to make this career choice work, unless your name is Gates, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, etc. and money is no object. lolz

She has filled her small book with what would be a starter's guide to being able to afford to be a full time homemaker/mother.  If you are young and wanting to be a stay-at-home-mom, this book may give you some food for thought on the subject but there is nothing really new here.
It was not applicable to me in my season of life.
I give it a one thumbs up.

*  Make Food Bank Donation--DONE

I got off my a$$ and got this done in April finally with Hubs' help.

This food bank takes toiletries, laundry detergent, paper goods, etc. too so
I loaded them up.
Laundry and cleaning supplies

Non-perishable foods and even cookies! lolz

Some soups and even canned dog food

A few more items I pulled from the stockpile.

*  Take Food Bank Donation--DONE
We were able to take it in surreptitiously this time.  The doors were unlocked as there was some sort of Lenten weekday service starting when we went so no having to get buzzed in.  We got to be Anonymous this time.  ;-)

*  Hold Giveaways--DONE

One giveaway for non-winners

And one for previous winners and/or folks who brought in new readers.

*  Mail Giveaways--DONE  All mailed and received.

*  Work on Health Goals--DONE  I've been fine tuning what I eat and am preparing to go on an Elimination Diet of sorts later this month.  I need to "restart" my metabolism both to reduce my weight and to deal with diet issues with my HS condition.  We are ready to start this adventure once Daughter leaves on the 19th.

*  Fill 6 Months of Giveaways Boxes--DONE

 6 boxes ready to fill.....

And 6 months of giveaways ready to go!  I have since filled another 3 boxes too. ;-)

*  Plan Home Projects Timeline--SORT OF DONE
It's impossible to plan EVERYTHING that needs doing at this time so we have planned out(and time lined)the first 4 or 5 projects with the steps necessary to completion arranged in order.
These Home Improvements/Repairs will be ongoing for a while.
The first items to complete are.....1-Daughter's ex-bedroom, 2-Ex-College Boy's ex-bedroom, 3-Hubs man cave room.  Also involved will be moving items out of the master bedroom and walk-in closet and once those are moved the master bedroom and closet to can addressed.  Sluggy's big ol' game of Dominoes begins!

*  Email a Company--DONE
On the way back home from SC in late March we stopped in Chambersburg, PA for a late lunch at a Bob Evan's(love me some Bobs).  Our waiter was really GREAT(the right mix of personable/friendly/above competent)! I got his name and made a point of emailing the company about him and what an outstanding job he does.  I did get an email back from Customer Services.  Here's the bulk of what they replied.

"How nice of you to share such kind remarks about Terrance!  It is always an encouragement to our employees when they receive positive comments from our guests.  Your compliments have been shared with the restaurant and the director of operations so proper recognition can be given."

I hope that "proper recognition" included some financial recognition(not just a pat on the back).   They would REALLY NOT want to loose him to another employer.  I hope they thanked Terrance well.

Also contacted was Rite-Aid Corporate about a candy bar I bought down in VA that looked like this when I opened it...........

That white thing on the left in the bar is a MAGGOT!  The holes were were it had eaten out the almonds in the candy bar while sealed in the package.
ick

I did a chat w/a CS person online and they said a "team leader" would contact me.  The next day an asst. manager of the store where I bought this called to apologize and said I could get my money back if I came into the store.  Well, I live 375 miles from that store so I said no, I can't come in.  SUPPOSEDLY they were going to contact me again and mail me a check.  That was about a month ago and I have heard nothing.

*  Purge Garage--SORT OF DONE
We went through everything out there and pulled out all of Daughter's crap(except for the dreadmill)oveer the course of April.  It's sitting in my living room waiting to leave now. yay!
We still need to finish purging the rest of the stuff out there over the course of the Summer.

*  Clean Garage--DONE
Well it WAS clean but then Ex-College Boy started cleaning out his room and he's strewn stuff out there.  Once we get around to purging the rest of the garage the cleaning will happen in earnest.

*  Dental Appt.--DONE
Teeth are cleaned and checked and no cavities.  Go me.

*  Prepare Garden Bed--DONE

We picked up more top soil in April.  We raked a bunch of leaves into the fire pit and once the ashes were cooled we put them in the garden bed. The bags of fertilizer I got last Fall at Walmart for $1 each were mixed in with the ash, top soil and all was tilled.  A photo of the result with Cinnamon the dog supervising pictured above.
The planting will happen in the coming weeks.

*  Cash in Savings Bond--DONE
Bond was presented for redemption the first trip to the bank we made last month.  No point in keeping the thing once it matured, right?  Get it somewhere else it can earn interest again.

*  Purge Q Envelope--DONE
I always purge the coupon envelope(the one that accompanies to the store)either at the beginning or the end of the month.  The Q inserts on the shelf didn't need purging in April but will get purged in May.

In the end it was a pretty successful April and we ticked off lots of items on our list.
Did you get a lot done on your To-Do List in April?  Tell us about your successes!

Sluggy
