Frugal Friday...The Last Two Weeks

Here are the frugal wins for this past week....

*  We have been hemorrhaging money lately.  Can't be helped.  I really don't want to go through this again.  Parts of it were a nightmare!

*  We got take-out only once at the new place.

*   The journey up here wasn't very frugal(more on that later)but we got to PA in one piece.

*  We finished up the Goodwill donations in LA. Go us!

*  Everything it turns out wouldn't fit on the moving truck(ugh)so some items got left behind and I wasn't there to  decide what got left.(double ugh)  Not frugal.

*  We've been paying deposits for services in PA which hasn't been very frugal but it is what it is and can't be avoided.

*  Entertainment the week before last was watching some tv shows and packing boxes. lol  It's hard to spend money if you are sitting home packing up your stuff. ;-)  Last week the "fun" was setting up the house.  And shopping for necessities and food.

*  We needed some room darkening curtains(the house came with blinds)for the bedroom so we hit Ollie's("Good Stuff Cheap!")and found what we needed at a cheaper price.

*   I got my mojo back and I found money!

I found .37 total at assorted stops along the way to PA.

I found .27¢ at the Aldi on the Sunday before last.

Then I found .01¢ at the Doctor's office on the Tuesday before last.

I found two pennies at Dollar General last Saturday.

I found a nickel at Walmart on the 21st.

Then I found another penny in a different Walmart parking lot.

Frugal Friday....the April 25th Edition

Here are the frugal wins for this past week....

*  I love finding marked down foods at Kroger(this really doesn't happen at Walmart).  There was a deal on strawberries, 2 lbs. for $2.99 so I bought 1 package.  Other than that, a bag of salad mix and a tomato were the only purchases.

*  We are getting to the bottom of the freezer but will have some frozen items left.  The guy who maintains our road is going to take whatever is left and the neighbors across the street are taking any canned/bottle/boxes food we are leaving, including our emergency bottled water supply,

*  We used up some more pantry items this past week.

*  We are working on documenting another Goodwill donation which will go out either this weekend or early next week.

*  We've been paying deposits for services in PA which hasn't been very frugal but it is what it is,

*  Entertainment last week was watching some tv shows and packing boxes. lol  It's to spend money if you are sitting home packing up your stuff. ;-)

*  I found money!

I found .02¢ at Walmart on Sunday.

I found a nickel walking out of the Kroger on Sunday as well.

Hubs had to go to Walmart on Thursday and found .37¢ in the coin return of the self-checkout change return at the machine he used.

Found Money This Week..... 44.¢

Grand Total Found in 2025....$3.17

Frugal Friday...the March 21st Edition

Here are the frugal wins for this past week....

*  I love finding marked down foods at Kroger(this really doesn't happen at Walmart).  I only did a small shop at Kroger so far this week...picking up 3 4-packs of clearance Activia yogurt, 2 marked down salad kits, a couple of sweet potatoes and strawberries.

*  We used up some pantry items as well.  I have had a craving for corn pudding.  It's not on my "diet" but I can splurge now and again since I haven't made and eaten it in 3 years.  We just needed sour cream(bought that at Kroger on sale)and I only had a small portion so no worries.  4

*  We also had no food waste last week.  We even used a rotting apple to catch an opossum in a trap.

*  There was no eating out this past week.

*  We took a load to the food bank.  Maybe one more trip there before we leave Lousyana.  It all depends on what deals I can find that we won't use before we leave.  Part of the next food bank donation will be courtesy of reader Diane R. 8-)))

*  It's been warm here so the heat had been off during the day.  The "Cajun Pony Express"(which is what we call the mail service here)lost our electric bill payment for February, so we had to pay it again online(and pay a "convenience fee" for the honor.)  Eventually the mailed ;payment showed up so now we have a large credit toward March's bill and it should cover a piece of April's bill too.

*  Entertainment last week was free tv, YouTube watching, sitting on the deck reading or doing genealogy.  I've got two books in process--a biography of Roger Daltery of the "Who" and a book on Jesse James, who is one of my ancestral cousins so watch yourself around me! ;-)

*  I found money!

Two pennies found in the dryer on Sunday when I did laundry.  Finders Keepers, right?

Frugal Finds This Week.....Sept.13 to Sept. 19th

 There are very few Frugal wins over the past couple of weeks.

*  While in the Rehabilitation Hospital I noticed the side effect of the Focuses Ultrasound where I can't write seems to be getting better.  I still have a way to go and my keyboard skills are still lacking(retyping everything I type is so tiring).  But I'll take any improvement win I can get.

*  I had Hub do some rebate shopping for me since I was in a rehab hospital until last Sunday.  Didn't hit that big 2 week bonus and Ibotta didn't give me a Weekend or a MidWeek Bonus either last week so I really wasn't motivated to spend money on anything.

*  I got out of the Rehabilitation Hospital and the Hospital Hospital(This was after 3 trips to the ER) Back home and had a visit with my Orthopedist Wednesday and my PCP yesterday.  Suppose to start more  outpatient PT on Wednesday, see a Neurosurgeon on the 1st and then get a nerve block injection on Oct. 2nd with the Spine & Pain doc.  Still can't lay down in a bed flat(I can lay down for a few hours bent up like a pretzel before the excruciating pain starts again))and then I am back to sleeping upright in a chair with my head on a stack of pillows on a table still in pain and the Rehab hospital doc only sent me home with 3 day of pain meds so we had to jump through hoops to get the Pain Management doc to relent to give me enough pills to get to the Oct. 2nd injection(thank you Federal Government and Opioid Crisis!!).
Not that I want to be ill in this way but in a way it's good we couldn't go to Idaho as Kim & Sissie are dealing with a death in their family and aren't home now.
That is terrible and my prayers are with their family and I am bummed  about having to miss our Alaskan cruise as well due to my continuing health issue.  At least we bought the travel insurance so we'll get back most if not all the $$$ we spent on this cruise.

*  I found money!

Went to Walmart(with electric carts)on Thursday and found a penny leaving the store.  That's it.

Total Found last week..... .01¢

Grand Total Found this Year.......$8.08 & 5.30 Euros

That's all I got and all I can do right now.

Frugal Friday....the March 8th Edition

There are very few Frugal wins(more like a week of medical frustrations)this past week but here goes....

*  I tried to use the Dental Discount Plan that came with my United Healthcare Supplement this week to schedule a dental checkup and cleaning.  After an inordinate number of phone calls over the coarse of this week and texts to United Healthcare and various Dentists here who "supposedly" accept this discount , I gave up.  They basically lied, there is no Discount Plan in this area because there are no Dentists who accept it.  So frustrated!  Why offer this "perk" if you buy this Supplement but you can't use it United Healthcare???  United Healthcare will be hearing from me and possibly won't get my money next calendar year for a Medicare Supplement.
Anybody out there know of a good dental insurance plan for us old foggies 65 or more?  Please send me a message.  Thanks!

*  I had a follow up with Pain Management.  One week out and the Ablation is not helping much yet. The PA there had written me an Rx in January for a muscle relaxer while I waited on having the Ablation done.  I got a Denial letter from my Part D saying I get one "courtesy" fill but they will not cover this medicine going forward as it's not in my formulary.(I double checked before signing up for a Part D plan that ALL my normal meds are in the formulary but how are we to know what random Rx some doctor will prescribe and whether it's on your formulary?  You can't unless you bring a computer to your appointment and look that drug up before he/she sends that script and you can advise said doc on this and they can try another drug.) So frustrating!
So I let the PA know I have to refill this Rx totally OOP next time and she says the office can contact my supplement provider and ask for an exemption.  Fine.  So I go to Walmart to pick up the Steroid pack the Ortho put me on and the pharmacy tech hands me TWO prescriptions and there is no charge.  ???  I see one is the Pain Management Rx(insurance said they wouldn't fill again), but filled in tablet form(not the capsules the PA wrote for this drug last time).  I am reading the paperwork you get with your drugs and it says, "Do not change from the capsule form to the tablet form and vice versa. ???  So I call the Pain Management office to advise them of all this.  A nurse calls back and tells me don't worry about switching from capsules to tablets and that Medicare supplement insurance plans never cover the capsule form but they do cover the tablet form of this drug.  Sooooooo, WHY on earth did the PA write the script for capsules in the first place?  They KNOW how old I am and I'm on Medicare! Just another cluster you-know-what.  I've got to laugh because crying does no good.....

*  I also saw the Orthopedist about my shoulders again.  He wants to see MRIs of my shoulders before he injects anything else into me because x-rays don't show you the whole story internally.  I might be more a candidate for PT(or if it's really bad, a candidate for surgery bleh)but he can't know until he looks at MRIs.....and he believes there is more going on in there besides Bursitis.  So we are waiting on approval from Medicare for MRIs while I spend this week on Steroids(which aren't helping my shoulders so far but I'll continue the med and hope for the best).

*  I also had a week of trying to get 2 regular prescriptions filled that I am on.  Our HSA debit card wouldn't go through for my ultra-expensive specialty drug.  At first we thought it was because we got new debit cards and they changed the security code on them unbeknownst to us. So I had to delete the old card on my rx plan account and then add the new debit card with the correct security code.  But the payment still wouldn't go through so we had to go back to the bank that handles the HSA account and it turns out there is a $2,500.00 limit on any one drug charge.  So we had to go back to the bank and have our limit raised so I could fill this $2,612.08 prescription.
Then I couldn't get another less expensive non-specialty drug filled at Walmart.  I texted on March 3rd to refill.  Walmart replied it's out of stock and will be 1-2 days to get it back in stock and they will contact me.  Walmart never texted me back so I had to go in person to the pharmacy counter and ask again at the end of the week.  and Walmart pharmacy I use tells me it's back ordered and no Walmart or Sam's Club pharmacy(which are in my Part D network)can get it in my area. Fan-so-tastic!
I ended up having to go to my approved mail order pharmacy to finally get this drug.....after contacting the PCP AGAIN(had to contact him before about a pre-authorization)that he had to write a new prescription so mail order could fill it.  Hopefully it arrives before I run out.  I really don't like to cut it this close.

*  I've already blogged about what groceries/toiletries I picked up last weekend.  I did get picked for a Dove campaign and picked up these new products on Wednesday........

It's through a company called "The Insiders" I joined(don't need a code to sign up).  I do have to review the items, etc. but I will received $34.00 in a rebate for purchasing these.  The items cost me $19.94 OOP making it a $14 moneymaker.

*  We picked up some produce(and a couple of steaks for $3.47 lb,)at a grocery store while over in Texas after having BBQ there for lunch,  All fresh produce, best prices and it actually looked good too-broccoli, green beans, yellow squash, sweet potatoes and a cuke.  We also bought Hubs a pack of English Muffins they had reduced to .47¢, and the bill totaled $14.00.
AND to top it all off there was NO sales tax on food in Texas and since it was Thursday I got a 5% Senior discount at this grocery store.  That seems to about the only perk of being old lately. lolz

*  I found money!

At Walmart last Friday there was .17¢ in the coin return of the checkout machine I was using.  Then I found another penny on the floor nearby.

Last Weekend I was going through stacks of old papers and found this Birthday card my youngest made for me years ago.  It was written in cursive so he was about in 5th or 6th grade(not that they even teach cursive writing in schools nowadays but they did back in the early 2000's).

Inside the card, on the page opposite where he wrote a message, was a dime taped to the card.  I am counting this as "found money". ;-)

Another 2 pennies found as I strolled out of Walmart on Tuesday evening after picking up an Rx.

I ran into the crappy Kroger on Tuesday while we were out seeing the Painful doctor and found another 2 pennies in there by a register.

Stopped for gas at the Walmart on the way home and found a penny by the pump.

That grocery store we stopped at in Texas?  I found this penny in the foyer while leaving the store.

Frugal Friday.....the February 23rd Edition

There are a few Frugal wins this past week so here goes....

*  Evelyn/Evelyn the Egret has moved on and we didn't see him/her this past week.  I blame the lack of rain filling up the fishing holes in the yard.  Goodbye for now my bird friend.

* As for saving money last week at the grocery stores, I already posted the details on my Walmart trips from last weekend........

*  Hubs and I had a Valentine's Lunch at a local Chinese restaurant last Friday.  Doing Lunch is more frugal than doing Dinner out.

*  I received a quarterly Rakuten rebate check this past week..........

A whole $22 and change.  Most of that was earned from hotel stays on our 3K+ mile trip in December. Better than nothing I suppose.....

*  No grocery shopping this week(so far).  My wallet likes that. 8-)

*  No eating out except for Valentine's day at lunch this week.  Shopping from my pantry and freezer this week.

*  We took all this to a local food bank on Thursday.....

Not necessarily frugal but it made me feel good after a day of dealing with my shitty kids. 8-)  Bonus-my gift buying list for Holidays shrunk by two(plus 2 spouses and a grandchild)this week!

*  I bought a few clothing items and a purse online.  My wardrobe is still pretty bare so I used some gift cards for Kohl's I still had and bought a vest, a thinner jacket, 3 shirts and a pair of pants at their 70% clearance sale and ended up spending under $9 OOP.  Though the pants are a petite I still need to hem them up 5 inches! lol  The jacket may be going back as the color is not what my monitor showed and it's a tad long and shortening it involves a zipper so...no!
At any rate, I earned $20 in Kohl's cash which I now need to spend. 8-)   Vera Bradley had an outlet sale online too so I splurged on myself and bought a dog themed purse and wallet because I am all about the dogs. lol  I ordered smaller sized dresses, the sort I like to wear in the Summer, and 2 pair of pants in a smaller size as the company that sells them had a President's Day sale as well.  My last stop was on online t-shirt vendor for some of their offerings with free shipping. I went through Rakuten to earn rebates when possible at all these online venues.

*  I spent a good deal of time finishing trying on every clothing item I own.  I sent 6 dresses, some pants(don't recall how many pair)and 5 shirts to Goodwill(also had to pitch a bathing suit and bras), and I have many items I like which I'd like to save by altering them but only about 4 or 5 only require hemming to make them wearable(2 are dresses I bought last Summer that just need hemming).  Most items require more extensive alterations-raising shoulder seams and/or taking in seams(side and other)and with my ET I may never be able to save those.  It's a shame really. 8-( This was a big time consuming project but it didn't require spending any money so that's why I have included it as a frugal activity.

*  I found Money!

The Chinese restaurant referenced above is inside of a run down extended stay motel.  As we pass through the lobby I always check the coin return slots in the two vending machines there and one had a quarter in it!

Then I found a dime in Walmart when I returned a shirt at the Customer Service Desk.  There is a "change your coins into bills" machine there and I spied a dime that got lost by someone on the floor next to the machine.

Then on Sunday I hit up a different Walmart for 2 items and I just found pennies all over the store--next to the freezer section, in a self check-out machine coin return, on the floor in toiletries and in the foyer while leaving the store.

Frugal Friday.....the October 13th Edition on Saturday

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

There are a few Frugal wins this past week so here goes....

*  Grocery shopping this past week--
I hit Walmart for some stuff(can't remember what right now as I am in a drug induced fog.  8-)

*  As part of my Ibotta big bonus I was trying to finish,  I had to have 1 online purchase so I downloaded Ubereats.com and when through ibotta on Sunday to order dinner from Bob Evans restaurant here in Ohio.  Not only did I earn the $10 Ibotta bonus but I  got $25 off the food order(first order with Ubereats.com)and I earned another $10.35 on Ibotta.  I  used the stipend credit card the medical travel program provided to pay(meaning this food order cost $0 OOP)plus turned it into an Ibotta moneymaker of $20.35.  Nice.

*  I  also found a $5 in free Extra bucks  on my CVS account last week.  So bought 2 boxes of Special K cereal there as it was BOGO.  $6.29 OOP but I got $2 back on Ibotta for that purchase, making those cereals better than free!
.
*  At the surgery consult on Monday in Ohio it was recommended I have flexible gel packs for icing my wound so Hubs hiked up to CVS and bought 2 of those.  Again, using the travel stipend card to pay so no OOP.  And on  the receipt was $8 in Extra bucks so $8 free script but Hubs used it the next day to get a bottle of CVS branded Miralax so no getting to splurge on that $8. lol

The purchase as earned me .58 on my CVS card but I'm not sure if he used that too.

*  I found money!

Found this nickel under the self-checkout register I used at Walmart last Friday.

Then at the airport in Louisiana on Saturday I found a  penny under a bench.

Then at the airport in Charlotte I spied this dime near our gate under a row of seats.

Total Found in last Week.... .16¢
Total Found this Year.......$3.27

*  And the bestest thing was getting a knee replacement at no charge to me due to this travel program our insurance provided.  I've been suffering since 2018 with this bum knee so I am very grateful for the people involved who got me to this point.(Including all my friends and family who have cheered me on and listened to me bitch about stuff along the way).  You are all rock stars! 8-)))

That's all I got.

Any frugal wins in your neck of the woods?  Let's hear all about them!

Blogging will be taking a backseat to getting me healed so there might not be many posts here for the foreseeable future.8-)

Frugal Friday 2023...the August 11th Edition

Welcome to Frugal Friday!

When will this living hell of a Summer end???  And the photo doesn't even mention the "Heat Index temp" here.  This photo is just from a random day last week.

There are very few Frugal wins this past week but here goes......

*  Got a few things at Kroger last Friday....pounds of blueberries and strawberries for .99¢ each, reduced fresh produce like .54¢ lb. mushrooms, slaw mix for .75¢, a salad kit for $1, a lb. of local Kielbasi for under $4, a lb. of salmon for $7.49, non-green peppers for .99¢ each and BOGO olive oil.

*  Staying inside mostly, needless to say, due to this extremely warm Summer still.  Who else thinks that Mr. Willis Carrier should be canonized a saint?!?  Right up there with him is Mr. Frederick Jones who invented the first portable a/c unit. 8-))

*  Two PT appointments this past week which costs Zero OOP.

*  After PT last Friday we went to Kroger(see ABOVE)..  I had points worth .30 discount per gallon of gas at Kroger so Hubs got gas there and used my discount.

*  My new clothes arrived last Saturday...

I needed a black dress as I had none.  When we went to pack up and move our wardrobes in PA the black dress I had from 16 years ago when Hubs mom died was nowhere to be found.  Roaman's was running a 60% off your first item and 40% off your 2nd item deal(really, if you got items that were the same price it just meant they were both 50% off).  So I got another of the same dress in a different color as more of my clothing is just hanging off me so these are a size smaller.  I also had a $10 Reward Certificate that was expiring this month and a Free Shipping code I could use.

And it's a good thing I had that free ship code.  They charged $19.99 for shipping just these 2 lightweight dresses(but I didn't pay that w/the code).  And in that package were all these various catalogs from them and their affiliated companies.  I think this all weighed MORE than the dresses!!  And I am certainly not paying shipping on all this cr*p I didn't ask for or want!

*  The doggies got groomed!
They were way overdue too.......
Some shaggy dogs.
And the after......

Nice and clean and short cuts.
We found a local person who does dog grooming instead of paying out the nose for PetSmart workers to do it.
She charges less than PS, did a better job and they are looking mighty spiffy(and smell much better)!

*  I found money!

A penny on the floor at Kroger last Friday near the registers.  This may be the wrong penny photo but whatever.  It's a penny and if this isn't the "one", the actual one looks just like this(but maybe with more wear on it). lol

Total Found in last Week.... .01¢
Total Found this Year.......$3.03

That's all for this past week.  Just sitting home is frugal, right?
