Healthcare Conundrums

If you read here regularly you know I had some medical procedures done lately on my face.
Before you think Sluggy is pulling a Hollywood celebrity stunt and having her face injected with Botox or even worse, having Plastic Surgery that isn't necessary(like for someone disfigured in an accident or born with a malformation on their face), I did NOT having something like that done.

Hey!, I'm no Joan Rivers or Kenny Rogers or Bruce Jenner, etc.
Seems lately that not only are women vain, the male side of the Baby Boomer Generation seems to be having difficulty aging gracefully too. ;-)

Anyway, I did have a Dermatologist "shave" 2 moles off my face and freeze 2 skin tags that were on my lower eyelids.
It was a quick and fairly routine out patient procedure.
But even for that, the human body does not react kindly to being meddled with.
The tags were frozen and I have to wait for them to "die" and fall off.  They are both taking their dear sweet time to do so and much like anyone who has every gotten in a car accident and was banged up, the tissue around my eyes is not taking this well and has left me with black and blue circles.  Just call me Old Racoon Face if you see me. lol

I am limiting going out in public for a few days, besides running to the grocery store, as I don't want to scare small children.lol
The worse discomfort has been where one of the moles was "shaved" off.  The muscle under this area isn't happy and has provided me with a headache since last Wednesday.  I don't notice until I am laying in bed trying to sleep so I pop a pain reliever to sleep these days.

I bring all this up not to elicit sympathy.  It's just my way to segue into talking about the insanity of our healthcare system.....more specifically, the insanity of how we pay for healthcare.

Anyone who has health insurance knows that there are items/procedures that your plan does and does not cover.  Any procedure of a dermatalogical nature is suspect when it comes to your insurance picking up the bill on most plans.  Many skin issues that aren't disease driven(or congentital) are not covered.
I knew the moles might or might not be covered.....if they showed precancerous/cancerous, they would be covered.  And I thought that since the skin tags were right next to my eyes and affected the functioning of my eyelids, those might be covered.

In the end, I didn't know what if anything I wanted done, if it would be covered by our insurance.
I had attempted to contact someone at my insurance company who could tell me whether any of these procedures would be covered.  I talked to 3 people and got 3 different answers.

So when I was finished and checked out I had to make a choice.
A--I could cut a check for $150, which is the price this facility charges people with no insurance coverage to have what I had done.
B--I could tell them to submit what I had done to the insurance company(which is also the owner of this facility and employes all the staff)and if none of this was covered, we would owe the facility close to $1,000.  Yes $150 or $1000(with 3 zeroes!).

Of course I chose to pay $150.  Whether insurance covered my work comes down to how the doctor codes the procedure.   She had asked me if there was a family history of skin cancer(in regard to the moles).  I had answered truthfully there was no history of this cancer.  If I had lied, she might have coded the removal and subsequent testing of the specimen removed differently so that insurance would have paid for this.  Since she commented that visually she could tell the moles weren't precancerous I knew I'd be paying for those 2 procedures.

With the skintags, since they affected functionality I thought they might be covered.  So before I decided to pay, I asked the receptionist to find out how the dr. had coded the procedure first.  She had coded it as ordinary skintag removal so I knew that submitting an insurance claim was a waste of time and would cost this trip to the doctor alot more than $150.

I'm not complaining that I had to pay $150 out of my pocket even though we pay many many dollars each year for a health insurance policy.
What make me sit up and notice and question is why does a couple of procedures that they charge $150 for, have to cost someone with health insurance $1000 in charges for the same exact thing?

Which cost-$150 or $1000-is closer to the "TRUE" cost of having been served?
Is $1000 of costs generated for performing this work or is the business out $150 in costs?

Are all those people paying $1000 (out of pocket for non-covered or covered because it's deemed medically necessary)subsidizing the cost of those who have work done who aren't covered and pay the $150?....meaning that each of us who pays for health insurance is actually already paying much more than necessary because we are subsidizing those who can't or won't buy health insurance?  If so, once universal healthcare is mandatory how will this be better or worse for those who work, pay taxes and will still have to purchase health insurance?
Or am I asking the wrong questions here?

I just think, irregardless of the mandated universal healthcare issue,  that our 3rd party payer system is broken.
Back before "health insurance"......when people had life insurance to pay for burying and funerals and disability insurance through jobs for when the breadwinners couldn't work, but we didn't have insurance policies to protect us from the costs of getting sick.......we didn't have a 3rd party in the transaction between patient and doctor.  People actually saved money as a regular thing, becaue you KNEW getting sick was just a part of life.   And when you got sick, you went to the doctor(or he/she came to you!) and then you took your money and paid the doctor.  And because you were directly affected by having to take money out of your own pocket, you were NOT disconnected from the real cost to the doctor for the service.  And because the doctor didn't need an entire staff of employees just to do the bookkeeping and submit claimes to a 3rd party insuror in order to get paid, he didn't have to charge extra to pay for all those employees, plus all the stuff the government said he had to pay into and track to employ those poeple....which required another bookkeeper to keep track of for his business.

People who have health insurance mostly have NO CLUE what the things they spend on through their policy costs.  No clue on the true costs or the inflated costs that the 3rd party marks everything up.  Why else do aspirin cost $20 a piece if obtained through a hospital or a large medical practice?  It's the same pill you can go to your local CVS and pay $4 for an entire bottle for!  It's all the levels of redundant  bureacracy and government regulations that often do nothing to keep us safer....they just make shit cost more!
And now we are putting the whole healthcare enchilada into the hands of Govenment?  The same government that has such an abysymmal track record at running ANYTHING EFFICIENTLY?
The post office(before they 'sort of' dumped it but they still subsidize it).....a national train system.....social security administration......the IRS(don't get me started on this one!).....

Since policy holders know their insurance will cover this visit, that drug or procedure, they really don't care or watch how the insurance companies inflate costs.
People either can't afford policies or they choose to not have a family doctor nowadays and then when someone gets sick, they go to an emergency room for treatment, often because even if you can't pay, you are not turned away at an ER.  So ERs get clogged up with non emergencies like people with the flu, kids needing routine shots and stuff, decidedly not emergency situations.  But the ER is charging high ER prices and it all gets passed down into what people with insurance policies are charged for their coverage.
And since people aren't paying out of their own pockets, they think nothing of running to the doctor for treatment for things that will and should just run their course, both the insured and the non-insured.

I just know that the system we have now doesn't work and I have no confidence that a nationally mandated healthcare system will be any better.  I tend to think that what will come is a rationing of healthcare, as doctors leave the field.  We need to keep an eye on the number of new doctors coming out of medical schools to see if the numbers start dropping since it's not going to be as lucrative a career as it use to be.
And wait times for some procedures will grow quite long.  And the people who could afford it, flew here for quicker or better treatment from countries with regulated mandatory healthcare will have to find a new country to seek their hip replacements and time sensitive cancer treatments, etc. in.

We are all in for some turbulent times ahead.

Food Spending NOVEMBER Week 2, Meal Planning Week 3

Doesn't that look yummy?
It's a picture from when I made French Onion Soup a few weeks ago for dinner.  I'll be sharing some more photos and the recipe I use after I get Thanksgiving out of the way here.

***********************************

And here is what actually got served last week....
This week's menu....
Sunday--Halushki with Bacon
Monday--Chicken Pot Pie
Tuesday--Tuna Casserole, Beets
Wednesday-Pizza for some, Leftovers for others
Thursday--Lasagna, Caesar Salad
Friday--Pizza for some, Leftovers for others
Saturday--Leftovers

The food spending last week was $.11 for $51.11 reg. retail worth of goods. And if you don't believe me, go look HERE.  I've spent a total of $202.65 so far in November on $396.59 retail price of food.  This isn't counting my Rite-Aid purchases.

Last week, I used all but $10 in free food certificates/gift cards/catalinas I had accumulated to spend only 11 cents this past week of groceries.  I'll be heading out to spend my last $10 free food chit today to pick up the last of what I need to prepare Thanksgiving Day's meal.  We are down to 5 for dinner since #2 Son's sometimes job called him into work on Thursday-it's a restaurant.
The Daughter also has to work Thanksgiving....her retail job, thanks to all you Black Friday people! 8-( ....but she gets to eat because she goes in late and works through the night so people can buy MORE tvs, small appliances, pajamas and electronics that they don't need to fill up their empty lives and their already overstuffed houses!
But hey!, who am I to judge, just because in order to keep her job she is forced to work when she should have the option of being home with her family on a National Holiday. ;-)

***********************
Going into this week, I have leftover NOTHING!  Every blasted leftover got snarfed up. Ok, I misspoke...I have a bit of grilled chicken breast that wasn't used for the pot pie.  I made 2 lasagnas last week.  We ate one and the other went into the freezer for later.  So 1 single serving of a leftover item to use this week.

This week's menu....
Sunday--Chili, Cornbread
Monday--2 people Taco Bell, me that leftover chicken in a homemade Quesadilla, Corn
Tuesday--Spaghetti and Meatballs(stockpile and freezer), Green Beans(freezer)
Wednesday--Leftover Chili, Cornbread
Thursday--Turkey Dinner, Pie
Friday--Subway Sandwiches
Saturday--Leftovers

This week I want easy.  The big pot of chili they can eat on multiple meals.  I'll throw the leftover of that into the freezer after 2-3 meals.  Spaghetti meal items are all here and I'll only make enough for 1 full meal because between the chili and turkey leftovers, that's plenty!   I'll use up the leftover chicken for myself tonight and Hubs & #2 Son will get Taco Bell on the way home from son's music lesson.

Left to buy this week?.....4 items for Thursday's Thanksgiving feast and milk.  I'll be spending right around $10 this week but it won't cost me anything because of my $10 certificate.  But come Friday?....I'll be hitting some sales and the Bread Outlet and be back to spending the food monies!lol
I still think I'll end November with a surplus of $$ in the food budget.  That will be sweet....

Are you cooking the Turkey Day meal this year or are you lucky enough to have family/friends to visit and let them do the cooking?
How about the rest of the week.....are you cooking the whole week or making it a simple meal plan or eating out?

Used My Expiring +Ups..A Rite-Aid Post

Went out last night to use the last of my $8 in +Ups expiring on Saturday.
I bought this on my card.....

2 x Dove Men's Body Wash (raincheck price of $2.50)=$5.00
1 x Axe Gift Set(w/Wellness 20% diacount)=$9.59
SubTotal.....$14.59

Coupons Used
1 x $2/1 Load2Card Dove Men's Body Wash=$2.00
2 x $2/1 Dove Men's Body Wash IPQ=$4.00
2 x $1/1 Any Dove Body Wash VV/AdPerks IPQ=$2.00
1 x $2/1 Axe Gift Set VV/AdPerks IPQ=$2.00
2 x $1/1 Axe single items VV/AdPerks IPQ=$2.00
Coupon Total.....$12.00

$14.59-$12.00=$2.59+.28¢tax=$2.87

I used $2 in +Ups and put the .87¢ on my Rite-Aid gift card.
I received back $3+Ups(Axe gift set), so all this was FREE and gave me $1 back in +Ups.

Then I got called home for a car emergency.  Had to go jump Hubs car and he needed to take my car to run an errand, so my shopping Friday night was done.

I now have 2 nice Christmas presents for my son's that didn't cost me a dime.....thanks Rite-Aid! 8-))

On Saturday I hit Rite-Aid again because I still had $6 in +Ups expiring.

I wanted to get Ziploc bags this week but my store was out, so I had to change it up.

Here are my gets on the BIL's card......

3 x R-A napkins on sale $2.50(3rd pack suppose to be $2.69 but rang up $2.50)=$7.50
2 x Tums Refreshers on sale $4.50=$9.00(1 is missing from the picture)
2 x ID Gum on sale $1.00=$2.00
SubTotal......$18.50

Coupons Used
1 x BOGO ID Gum(Target site ManuQ)=$1.49 *
1 x .25¢/1 ID Gum VV/AdPerks IPQ=$.25
2 x $1/1 Tums Refreshers Tearpad Q(on shelf)=$2.00
2 x $1.50/1 Tums Refershers VV AdPerks IPQ=$3.00
AND HERE IS WHERE IT GETS CRAZY.....
1 x $1/1 Tums Refershers Load2Card Q=$1.00
1 x $2.50/1 Tagament Load2Card Q=$2.50 **
1 x $1/1 Debrox EarWash Load2Card Q=$1.00 **
Coupon Total.....$11.24

$18.50-$11.24=$7.26+.21¢=$7.47
I used my $6 in expiring +Ups and a $1 +Ups from the ID Gum I bought earlier in the week to pay and put the .47¢ on my R-A gift card.

I received back $7 in +Up Rewards($3 wyb $7 in paper goods, $1 wyb2 ID gum, $$2 wyb2 Tums, $1 wyb2 R-A tissues/napkins), so I am "even" on the +Ups count n this transaction.

* First off, the cashier took the full reg. price off on the Gum and not the sale price.  The coupons had a limit of $1.29 so I need to go back next time and give them some change back.

** Now why did Tagament and Ear Wash Qs on the Load2Card come off for this transaction?  From what I've heard, all 3 of these products are made by Glaxo Smith Kline and that is what triggered them to attach to my Tums.  It would also explain by the single item $1 Axe Qs are attaching to your transaction if you only buy the Gift Set.....same brand name owns both gift sets and single items.  Now I can see this since they are BOTH Axe products, but it's truly crazy that those GSK owned different brands came off on my Tums.  But I am NOT complaining! lol  My 2 Tums cost $9 and I got $9.50 in Qs off of the cost between my $5 in VV/AdPerk and Tearpad Qs and $4.50 in Load2Card Qs.

I was NOT expecting that extra $1 +Ups for buying the napkins.  The ad stated "Spend $7 in Rite-Aid paper products, Get $3 +Ups".  I spent $7.50 on 3 packs of napkins and got the $3 and an additional $1 +Ups that was specific to the napkins.  And I got tracking on my receipt "Buy 2 RA Tissues/Napkins, Get $1+Up(Limit 2)".  I would suppose this is some kind of Monthly Deal for the Tissues/Napkins.
After both +Up Rewards on the napkins they ended up "costing" $1.17 a package(if you had to spend cash and don't have +Ups to spend).  That's not a bad price for 250 ct.!

My +Ups are good to go for another 2 weeks if next week's ad has nothing I want/need.  I can concentrate on Turkey stuff this week instead. ;-)

I Will Cut You....Meh

Remember this cute baby?
It made the internet rounds with the caption...."I WILL CUT YOU!"...a few years ago.

Well I have met "I will cut you" and she isn't a baby.....she's a dermatologist.

I had some outpatient surgery the other day.  No biggy, just some growths cut off my face and no, not the important ones.

But I am in more pain than I thought would come from this.
So I'm taking a few days off from posting on the blog.  I can't seem to do much of anything more than post some complaining comments on a few blogs and then go annoy some clueless socialist liberals on Facebook.

I got nothing coherent to say here.
And the pain in my face is keeping me from being my jovial, off-beat self.

I'll leave you with this YouTube video.
I about peed my pants the 1st time I watched it.
And before you get all uppity and call me a racist, the humor has nothing to do with this guy's skin color.
(This is probably what I sound like after I've had a few drinks too.)
We seriously need this man to audition for American Idol next year!

Somebody contact his representation management firm STAT! ;-)

Have a good weekend folks,

Do You Want to Live in a Free Market Society or One Controlled by Government?

I found this video on Youtube today that explains why Free Market Economics run counter to Government Controlled Markets, using the current SuperStorm Sandy example.
And in regard to those $30 flashlights?.....I'll contend that given the prices in Manhattan, $30 for a flashlight is NOT gouging anyway.  I've had to buy things in Manhattan and that place is ridiculously high anyway on EVERYTHING!lol

So are you a Keynsian or a Hayekian when it comes to economic theory?
Do you believe in truly free markets(not what we have now in America, which is NOT a free marketplace but Crony Capitalism)?
Or do you believe that government should control our marketplace and cause artificial dips and highs?

I Went & Spent Money....Or Did I?

After having my face all cut to shreds by the Dermatologist I went to use some of my Grocery chits that were burning a hole in my pocket.
And of course, due to some bad planning a had to spend a little bit of cash.
Sigh......

 At Weis(PMITA)I got.....
4 x Wheatables Crackers(for the holidays) on sale $2(With store Q and Must buy 4)=$8.00
I stacked 2 x $1/2 Peelie Qs so each box was $1.50.

1 x Simplait Yogurt on sale=$.50
I used a $.30/1 IPQ which doubled so I got paid .10¢ to buy this.

2 x Freschetta pizzas(this will be dinner tonight because I am hurting)on sale $4.99=$9.98
I used 2 x .75¢/1 IPQ which doubled to $1, so the pizzas were $3.99 ea.=$7.98/2

1 x Cabot Cheese on sale=$2.50
1 x Cabot Greek Yogurt=$4.29--it's cheaper than the store brand in qt. size
I used a $1/2 Cabot items IPQ, so the cheese was $2.00 and the yogurt was $3.79.

Subtotal was $19.67.
I used a $5 OYNO Catalina, $14.67
Then I used my 2 gift cards, 1 had $5, the other had $10, so the out of pocket was ZERO and I have $.33 left on 1 card.

At the Shursave market I got....
1 x Bag o' Romaine Salad on sale=$2.50
1 x ground beef=$5.85
2 x Stove Top stuffing on sale(.88¢)=$1.76
No coupons used so Grand Total was $10.11.
I used one of my $10 gift certificates to pay so out of pocket was......11¢.

8-))

The stuffing was for Thanksgiving.  I make a killer homemade stuffing with mushrooms, walnuts and other goodies.  Since we have people who can't eat nuts and won't eat mushrooms I also serve the boxes stuff for them.  I used to compromise my stuffing recipe and serve something watered down that we don't like but I don't do that anymore.
Life is too short, ya know?
If they don't like my stuffing, they can go make their own.....8-P

None of this I bought above  is what I need to buy for the Turkey Day meal however. lol
I still need celery, taters, parsnips and rutabagas.
But I still have another $10 food certificate which I will save to buy those items early next week.

I hopped into Rite-Aid today as well on the way to the dr. appt.

1 x Axe Gift Set on sale=$9.59(20% wellness disc. was lower than the sale price of $9.99)
2 x ID Gum on sale $1=$2.00
Subtotal.....$11.59

Coupons Used
1 x $2/1 Axe gift set VV AdPerk Q=$2.00
1 x BOGO ID Gum IPQ=$1.19(It took off the reg. price, not sale price, automatically)
1 x $.25/1 ID Gum VV AdPerk Q=$.25
2 x $1/1 Axe Load2Card Q(these came off automatically)=$2.00
Coupon Total....$5.44

$11.59-$5.44=$6.15 + .05¢tax=$6.20
I used $6+Up Rewards to pay and put the .20¢ on my gift card.
I received back $4 in +Up Rewards($3 Axe gift set, $1 wyb2 ID Gum).

So basically I got paid .44¢ to buy the gum packs and the Axe set "cost" me $2.59.
The Axe Load2Card digital coupons are for individual Axe items, not the gift set but they are coming off when you purchase the gift sets.

Both son's love this Axe stuff so I might pick up another one with the BIL's Wellness card.
I've got another $8 in +Ups I have to spend/roll/convert by Saturday so I'll be heading back to Rite-Aid later this week.

Stupid Crap People Really Buy!....Episode #1

Just in time for the 2012 Holiday Shopping Season, it's a new Feature here at Chez Sluggy I like to call--

"Stupid Crap People Really Buy"

Today's Selection comes to us directly from the Sunday Coupon Inserts.  The Inserts on Sunday we get here aren't filled with lovely lovely high value coupons....no.  Instead they are filled with lovely lovely offers of fine quality merchandise that no store would deem to carry.
This particular item caught my eye recently......

It's the beautimous ELVIS FASHION BAG!
This beauty is available exclusively from the Bradford Exchange.
You know, that clearinghouse of all things "collectible".
Yes, this Elvis bag is a collectible that you can actually use to function as a purse...what a concept!

Stand in awe of it's custom designed golden faux leather featuring silhouettes of Elvis, his replica signature, the braided faux leather handle with metal rings attaching it to the bag, and a key fob with the TCB(or Taking Care of Business) charm.  Strong demand is expected so hurry and order NOW!

Now do you want to know the kind of customer I see walking around in life with this purse on their shoulder?

And this fine vinyl, er.....faux leather purse will run Miss "Kiss my Grits" Flo $100 in 4 easy payments(plus shipping of $10.99).
What a bargain!!!
Even if she has to tighten her Aqua net and chewing gum budget for awhile and stop throwing wild Canasta parties at the trailer park until this is paid off.

Yes, Style may be "Golden" like the ad states, but this purse is neither stylish nor golden.

Here's a thought--If you really must have an Elvis bag why not go down to one of "The Marts" and buy a plain bag, then buy some Elvis stickers and some fabric paint(though vinyl isn't really fabric, is it?) and create your own decorated bag.  This way, you save yourself a shit ton of money by not paying the extortionist price for a licensed Elvis product(which the lion's share goes to a division of JP Morgan Chase-which owns the rights to the Elvis name).  You save your money and I bet you'll have a much more tasteful and unique bag in the end.

It's just a cheap made in China bag anyway, just like all the other "faux leather" bags in the stores.  These probably cost $1.50 to produce and even with the print advertising it didn't cost anywhere near $100 to get to market.  What makes it cost $100 is the licensing and the horrendous markup charged by the owner of the bag company.
Yes, Sluggy has been watching SHARK TANK lately.....lol

And if you still have another $60 laying around to throw away, you can also buy the Elvis Performance Ballet Flats Shoes to complete your ensemble.

So I ask.....I know they must sell oodles of these......
But Who buys this crap?!?!
Anybody you know?
And what kind of need is filled in anyone with this stupid crap?
Or do people who buy stupid stuff just keep buying more and more until they end up on "Hoarders"?

Vacation & Savings By The Numbers....How I Paid for It

Speaking of money......aren't I always?lol......
I finished doing the accounting on the cost of our Vacation to Ocean City.
For you math nerd/listmakers, here is how it breaks down--

Hotel Room 5 nights oceanfront....$411.03
Pet Boarding 2 dogs.....$174.00
Restaurant dotcom certificates....$16.00
Movie and Museum(including books)....$28.75
Gas.....$102.77
Tolls....$18.00
Sundries.....$15.90
Food Out and Drinks/Liquor Purchases....$278.29
Tips 7 Restaurants....$59.00

TOTAL....$1,103.74

How I did this trip more frugally?

*Going in the "Low" Season to the Ocean means much lower room rates.
Do you know what our room booked for last Summer?
$339 a night.

Going in October?
$89 a night weekday/$109 a night weekend(Sunday night is considered weekend).
Then you add the state taxes and the room charges equaling approx. 10% of your room cost onto that base number.
I brought the cost of the room down more.  Since I am on this hotel's mailing list I had a Rate Book from them that noted if I booked via telephone instead of online, I would get a 20% reduction in my room rates....20% off the discounted off-season rates.
This means I saved $100+ more on the room charges.

*I could have skipped on the pet boarding since 2 of the kids were home.  But with their schedules it would have meant making the dogs either "hold it" for too long stretches during the day and having their feeding schedules disrupted.  We have no pet sitting options here(we tried that last year with bad results)so it was money we had to spend in good conscience.
Not frugal but the best way for us.

*We didn't do much that cost money for activities.  1 movie, 1 museum, a few cheap books.  Besides eating and drinking we concentrated on the free stuff...... walking the boardwalk, people & ocean  watching from the balcony, plus a little tv.  We don't see the reason for "doing things" that don't take advantage of where you are and what makes that place special.  Beaches are for hanging out by and enjoying nature, not spending your whole vacation in the mall or an activity you can do anywhere.

*Gas and Tolls are what they are.  Toll roads could have been avoided mostly but it would have taken us more time and more gas to get to and from where we went.

*The only non-food type item we bought was a pair of clip-on sunglasses for Hubs.  They cost more than I wanted to spend but at least they are good quality and not a "cheapie" pair so Hubs should get a few years of use out of them, so frugal if they last.
No junky souvenirs were bought.

*Food and Drink was a mix of eating in(groceries), eating cheap and moderate restaurant meals.  I didn't figure in the cost of the groceries we bought and consumed on vacation since those are counted under our Food Budget for the month.  17 meals were eaten--3 breakfasts and 1 dinner at the room and 13 meals(plus 2 snacks) out or on the way to or from on the road.
Between not eating every meal out and using some Restaurant certs. to try new places we had a successful eating experience on this vacation.  We didn't plan on skimping on meals out since it was vacation and that is what we decided to spend on, not souvenirs or activities.

*Having been a waitress in one of my previous lives, I make tipping in establishments that require it a priority.  Seriously, if you can't afford to tip the help, then you can't afford to eat out and you should stay home or go visit Ronald's or The King's Place.
I had an online friend who refused to tip when we ate out together.  It pissed me off so badly that I stopped going places with him.  He'd get all up into his psuedo-European attitude that we shouldn't have to tip an employee.  Well, until the whole restaurant business model changes in this country, you are required to tip that waitperson Mr. Jerk Face!  And you are NOT in Europe and you are NOT European so get off that popsicle stick stuck up your ass and deal with it.
Deep cleansing breath.......

Yeah, I get a little prickly about the dining public that stiffs their wait staff.  I tip well.....no apologies.

$1,103.74 for 2 people for 5 nights is how it all shakes out in the end. That's $110.37 per person per day inclusive.  Our room slept 4 so we could have reduced the cost maybe(though food/eating would have increased)if we had brought the kids, but then again, our "enjoyment factor" for the trip would have fallen with 2 sullen teens along. Just putting up with all that eye rolling from them would have necessitated more adult beverage purchases which would have negated any frugality.  lol

So the question now is..... where do we find the $1,103.74 to cover the cost of this vacation......much of which was put on our credit card?
That's easy.
We will take $1,103.74 from the money we saved last year in my Savings Challenge in 2011.
We saved $34,461.31 in 2011.

As is my routine, any expenses in the following year that aren't earmarked to be paid for with current year income, we pay for from the money we saved in the preceding year.  Expenses paid for in this fashion are not the normal bills, either monthly bills or irregular bills that are planned for and expected each year.

They are the emergencies like "the car motor needs an overhaul", the fridge can't be repaired so we're buying a new one" or  the "wouldn't it be nice to have X because we are frugal and have the extra money for it" expenses.  I guess you would call my savings challenge pile of money our emergency fund for the following year.
Having saved $34,461.31 in 2011 meant we had an emergency fund of $34,461.31 for 2012.

So far in 2012 we have spent $1,523.42 of the 2011 Savings.
--$600 was used toward the Ohio trip in June of 2012.
--$923.42 was used toward the purchase of the 3rd car for the children's use n August 2012.  That car was paid for with the insurance check from the driver who totaled our last 3rd car in May of 2011 and a small inheritance check.  The $923.42 was the difference between those 2 funds and the price of the car.

With the addition of the Beach Vacation expenses we have now spent down $2,627.16 of the 2011 Savings Challenge monies.

Even though 2012 is not over yet, I am going to close out the books on the 2011 Savings amount now.
Since we are only $400+ short from the savings goal for the 2012 Savings Challenge with 2 months to save that amount AND we have an extra paycheck in November, even if we run high on expenses for the last 2 months of the year, I don't foresee having to dip into the 2011 Savings monies again this year to cover any overages in our expenses.
So I can close out the books on the 2011 savings/2012 emergency fund monies and report that we ended up hanging onto $31,834.15 of the monies we saved in the 2011 Savings Challenge.  This amount can now be invested since we won't tap into it again until we retire.

Once 2012 is over, the money in that Savings Challenge fund becomes the new Emergency Fund for 2013, and I will continue to save in 2013 and put that money into a new Savings fund to tap into for 2014.

It's just a never ending circle of frugality and savings.  I try to stay 1 year and 1 emergency fund ahead of the expenses. 8-)
It's sort of like putting money away as soon as you pay off a car, to purchase your next car so you never have to finance a car again.
I put money away for future emergencies so that I never have to finance anything in my life again!

How do you save for vacations and those nice little things in life?  Do you plan ahead?  Do you put money specifically into a fund for fun?  Or do you fund a general emergency/expenses account?

Food Spending NOVEMBER Week 1, Meal Planning NOVEMBER Week 2

This has nothing to do with Meal Planning.  I just thought it was funny. 8-)

***********************************

And here is what actually got served last week....

Sunday--Steak on grill, Salad, Roasted Potatoes & Onions
Monday--Reuben Sandwiches
Tuesday--Grilled Pork Chops, Green Beans, Cinnamon Apples
Wednesday--Kielbasi on Rolls, Onions and leftover Sauerkraut, Corn
Thursday--Chinese Take-out
Friday-- Ravioli with Sauce, Spinach Salad
Saturday--Leftovers
The food spending last week was $96.30 for $157.04 reg. retail worth of goods.  I also earned $20 in food Catalinas to spend in the coming 2 weeks so I should have little or ZERO OOP food expenses from now until Thanksgiving day.

***********************
Going into this week, I have leftover corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut from the Reubens, and 1 large helping of Raviolis and Sauce.  I'll either have sandwiches for lunch or freeze the corned beef for later use.  I'll have the ravioli dish for one of my lunches.  Moving the 1 meal we didn't have last week to this week's menu and the big side dish of Halushki as well.

This week's menu....
Sunday--Halushki with Bacon
Monday--Chicken Pot Pie
Tuesday--Lasagna
Wednesday-Honey Mustard Chicken, Rice, Broccoli
Thursday--Chili, Cornbread
Friday--Tuna Casserole, Beets
Saturday--Leftovers

On Wednesday it's possible we'll have leftovers as well instead of the Honey Mustard Chicken.  There is leftover Halushki from Sunday, there should be leftover Pot Pie tonight and there will be leftover Lasagna on Tuesday, so the second chicken dish may not be needed this week.
What do I need to buy to serve this menu?  The local market had their semi-annual meat sale last week, so I picked up a huge pork loin(to cut into chops)and 2 large pkgs. of chicken breasts.  I've got 2 chicken dishes on deck for this week(or note) to use some of what I bought.  Chili will use some of the beef cubes in the freezer that are aging and the ricotta was bought last week to make the Lasagna this week.
Left to buy this week?.....maybe some romaine lettuce for a Caesar Salad to have with the Lasagna.
Add in some fruit and milk and we are done.
So what are you cooking at your house this week?

Lest We Forget

Never forget that many that have gone before you have given of themselves to keep you free.
Many have given their all doing their duty.
And many who didn't have their all taken from them, were changed irreparably nonetheless.

Take a moment today, on this Veteran's Day to remember the great cost at which your freedom was won and is protected to this day.

Thank the veterans in your family tree, both living and dead.

Here, we'll be celebrating men like.....

Robert Foster, Ensign Army, Revolutionary War

Joseph James Hamilton, Private Army Reserve Corp., C.S.A., died as a POW

Raymond Maxwell Harper,  Private Army, World War II

Frank Bowman, Sgt. Army Corp of Engineers, World War II

Steve Arcure, Private Army Air Corp, World War II

and Anthony Arcure, Navy, Vietnam War (no photo)

Except for the last name above, our veterans are all gone now.

War is terrible.  Ask anyone who has had to fight.
We should not enter lightly into wars of an offensive nature.
A strong defense is however a different matter.

While we don't have troops fighting in Iraq any longer we need to bring the troops home from Afghanistan as well.

Show some appreciation to those veterans in your life who are still with us.
And donate to the WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT to help our Military Heroes who need a hand transitioning back to civilian life.
They gave themselves to keep you safe.
What can you do to keep them well.

Food Spending Limit Until Thanksgiving...Can I Do It?

If you come here often, you know I operate on a Food Budget of $400 per month.  That amount includes pet foods and all toiletries and paper products too.
Well, most months that is what I strive for but we seem to have spent more than $400 on food in 4 out of the last 10 months. 8-(

For our family(size, habits, etc.)and income I think $400 is a good amount.  It's not so low that the only foods we can afford are highly processed and/or nutritionally questionable....though we do buy some processed and questionable foods on occasion.  I know others spend less on food but given the prices in my area and the dearth of competition between stores which keeps prices lower, this is about as far down in the budget I care to go on this expense.
Of course, should something in our lives change(job loss/income disruption/kids moving out//DEFLATION of prices...hahaha, had to throw that one in for a laugh since prices NEVER go down!), I would be re-evaluating the budget in a heartbeat.

As for November's Food Budget.....
I have just completed buying groceries at the local Shursave grocery to earn a food certificate for free food at their store in the next 12 days before Thanksgiving.
DID I JUST SAY THERE ARE ONLY 12 DAYS LEFT BEFORE THANKSGIVING???
Anyway, I have spent so far in November on groceries a total of $202.54 of my $400.  Along with the weekly items I needed to make the meals served, I have picked up loss leaders and meat & frozen veggie deals along the way this month to use on down the road.  And I earned $20 in free food certs for buying things now(or last week)that I would have bought anyway at the end of the month.  I have also been picking up Thanksgiving meal items as they have gone on sale.  I got a turkey earlier this week so I am set for most of what I need to throw the Thanksgiving meal together.
The only items left to buy are Celery, a small bag of Potatoes, a couple of Rutabagas and Parsnips.

I have between $35 and $40 in free food catalinas, certificates and gift cards to use.
I have $20 to spend at the Shursave Grocer and between $15 and $20 at Weis(PMITA)Markets.
(I have a $5 Weis Cat to use by 11/15, and 2 gift cards--1 is for $5 but I can't remember if the other one is also for $5 or $10.)
8-)

I am going to try to use these chits to cover our food expenses up to and including those 4 Thanksgiving meal items.  $35-$40 should cover anything I need to buy until the 22nd.
All meals the next 11 days will be from foods I already have here or we can use one of the pizza coupons I won at the Church Auction last month if we feel like eating take-out during that time frame.

I'm all excited now to see what kind of meals I come up with so I only use that $35 in chits and don't have to buy any food until after Thanksgiving.

Do you think I can do it?
Do you have enough food laid back that you could do this?

Thoughts in The Random Fashion

** First off, here are the fundraiser gift baskets from last week(or was it the week before that one?) after I finished arranging/decorating them....

The Band Competition was last Sunday so the baskets are gone!  I hope they raised some $$$s.

Our Band did well at that Competition.
Tonight is the 1st Play-off Game for the Football team......can you hear me saying "Oh Goody!"?lol
So the Band has to march and play tonight.  The Band is hoping the team loses so that this is the last Football game they have to attend.  Nights are just too bone chillingly cold here to be outside performing with a metal instrument up to your face.  I have visions of getting a call that my son's tongue is stuck to his flute.

 I'll keep my fingers crossed.....

** Saturday is the State Championships in Hershey.  They did so well this season that they got pushed into the Open Bracket section.  They went from 30th to 9th place in our state's region since the last tournament.
Go them!!
Not sure about how that affects the Band(probably makes their odds of winning anything worse)but #2 Son is bemoaning that now they don't get to stop at Friendly's for lunch on the way down, like they have done since forever.  He will just have to eat nasty "made at home" food on the bus instead.
#2 Son is not amused.....

I think Saturday marks the end of Marching Band Season.
#2 Son has already started with Pitt Orchestra rehearsals.  That's the band for the School's Musical Production which is staged right after Thanksgiving.
Then December they start rehearsals for the Jazz Band and the Concert Band, so 3-4 rehearsals each week continues until the end of December.
Oh, and add in his weekly private music lesson too.
And that doesn't begin to address the academics and studying for the SAT he's taking on December 1.
I can't wait for January!

** I haven't been on Ancestry or Find A Grave dotcom in over a week!  Weird, huh?
Cemetery walking Season is coming to a close as the temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall.
I just felt a need to lay off the dead people for awhile.  I'm sure the feeling was mutual on their end as well.   I'll be back at it sometime soon.

** If you look at my Blog Roll you may find new Blogs there in the coming days/weeks.  I have dropped a couple that have fallen off the face of the Internet and added a few, in my vain attempt to stay relevant and "hip".   You will find all kinds of folks on my Blog Roll because that's how my Blog Roll rolls.
If you have a blog you enjoy, feel free to drop me a note about it.  I am always excited to find a new morsel....

** I did go through my Christmas box this week......

The things I pick up over the year when I spy a great deal go into this box.  Sometime in November I pull it out(the box silly!)and dig through the goodies.  I make little piles of gifties for each person I buy for at the Holidays.  Here's some of it spread out over the bed.....

The Christmas/Gift box has changed over the years.  It use to be many boxes worth of stuff and eventually, when the kids were young and I had many more friends, family members, as well as teachers, professional contacts and others to gift, the Christmas Box was a whole darned closet!
That's when I came to my senses and put a stop to shopping on this level.  Now that I'm not buying toys, nor expensive electronics, the Christmas box is at a small manageable level.

Most of what I pick up for cheap/free gets used as Stocking Stuffers.  More and more of what I pick up is consumables or "needs" based because, really, how many useless tchotchkes does one human have to have?  The lot above consists of socks, combs, brushes, more socks, bath salts, incense, more socks, gum, candy, more socks, snacks, humorous pasta, and yes, more socks!

I take a grocery store bag for each person I gift and dump everything for that person in that bag and label it.
The few things I wrap for 'stand alone' gifts get bagged together and once I drag out the gifts bags, wrapping paper and Furoshiki cloths, I'll attend to them at that time.  For now, it all goes back into the Christmas box once it's all bagged.
I've pretty much got all the kids and Hubs stocking goodies completed.  A couple of gift cards to procure and I'm done with that.

The few presents I'll buy for under the tree won't require a trip to the mall, that's for sure!

** And I know it's the Christmas Season without looking at a calendar.
I just have to look into my mailbox.....

Why does it have to be that if you buy a few things online, you get on everyone's stupid catalog mailing list?
I had just about gotten the superfluous barrage of Holiday Catalogs down to a lone LL Bean one a couple of years ago.
And then I went and bought some unmentionables for me and for Hubs from Hanes and BAMM!.....we are back on the lists.
bleh.

I have a new Holiday Tradition I'll be instituting here at Don't Read This; It's Boring! this Christmas Season.
Look for my new Weekly Feature called "STUPID CRAP PEOPLE REALLY BUY" next week!
And feel free to send me your submissions.  While I feel there will be no end to the stupid crap I find to post about, my readers imput is always encouraged and looked forward to.  8-)

The Morning After Quarterbacking & Feeling Good About My Personal Choices

I've been reading around the internet since the election.  Yes, Sluggy isn't one of those, "I vote every 4 years and then forget about our political system until the next presidential election" type of people.  Sorry about that. ;-)
Anyway I was doing some, as they like to call it in the sports world, some post-game analysis.

I am the 1%
who voted for
peace,
balanced budgets,
to end crony capitalism
federal overhaul of tax system
federal marriage equality
federal end of drug war
and to LIVE FREE
I voted Gary Johnson for President.

While I knew Gov. Gary Johnson had a less than zero chance of winning the election, I still feel he made some inroads into the process.

More of the open-minded folks in this country heard of us Libertarian "nut jobs" and our message and embraced it.  Just like many in this country are now embracing "preppers".....though i still think a few of those folks ARE nuts!lol
The Libertarian Party now has achieved ballot access in 30 states and the District of Columbia.  This means the next election cycle the party only has to work to get onto 10 state's ballots.

Just having ballot access is a big step forward for a 3rd party.  It means that less money has to be wasted on defending our candidate(s) in the frivolous lawsuits that the 2 major parties throw up in an effort to keep control of the political process in this country.

Just in PA alone, the state Lib. party had to spend NINE WEEKS throwing money, time and lawyers at a lawsuit brought by the state Republican party to keep a 3rd party candidate off the presidential ticket.
NINE WEEKS of courtroom intimidation and protesting legitimately collected petition signatures.
Hey, it's not like we went all old school Chicago style and hit the local cemeteries for votes!

Isn't freedom and choice something American's believe in?  And the more choices we have makes our country better, right?
Apparently that is only true if you are a Dem or a Rep. anymore.

Gary Johnson garnered 1% of the popular vote in this year's election.  He had the highest vote total for a Libertarian Presidential candidate ever.  I will take the little victories.

I was reading an article online on the Missouri Libertarian Parties website by Cisse Spragins, you can view the whole item HERE if you wish.

The part that got my attention was this exceprt at the end.....
*********************************
" "I used to think that the number of votes cast for Libertarians was a measure of our discontent as a nation," said the party's chair, Dr. Cisse Spragins, "but I now realize it's a measure of our courage." "Discontent is high - congressional approval ratings are in the toilet, yet virtually everyone was re-elected. And yet while millions of alleged fiscal conservatives wasted their votes on Romney and millions of alleged anti-war, pro-civil liberties voters wasted their votes on Obama, over a million people were willing to step up and vote their conscience for Gary Johnson, and millions more cast Libertarian votes down ticket," Spragins said. "That gives me hope. I'm really proud of our candidates and our voters."

Voters who recognize that the two-party duopoly has jointly led the country to the brink of economic disaster and who are tired of never-ending foreign wars and a ballooning Big Brother police state will find common ground with the Libertarian Party. The LP is Americas third-largest political party and has been working for smaller government since 1971. The Missouri Libertarian Party has been a recognized party in the state, with continuous ballot access, since 1992. For further information visit www.lpmo.org or call 877-Vote-4-Us."
 **************************
I think that Ms. Spragins has something there, don't you?

Yes, a lot of people look at Libertarians(or any 3rd party really)as just a bunch of malcontents.

But the thing is, disapproval ratings for ALL politicians is high.  Look at any of the polls taken in this country.....when asked about approval ratings and how you think your 'fill in the name' politician is doing to make this country better/do their job/be accountable to their constituents.....a majority of the public will and continue to say that none of them are doing their job well and need to go.

But come election time, we continue to rehire them?!  If you look at all the races held on Election Day, a majority of incumbents, no matter the race, were re-elected!
So we thing they are doing a shitty job but we rehire them??  If it wasn't so insane, it would be funny, wouldn't it?

So if so many of "We the People" are not pleased with these representatives, why do we keep electing them over and over again?!?!

People need to stop believing the rhetoric and start looking at what our elected officials DO.
Track records people, track records.
Does your political party say one thing but vote another way?
Do your elected representatives have the best interest of you, your state, your country at the core of what they do or are they "in it" for their own glorification, power and bank accounts?

Listen, we ALL want only the best for ourselves and our families....can we at least agree upon that?
We all want to live in peace and have the right to enjoy our lives as we see fit as long as we don't infringe upon someone else's right to pursue their peaceful life.

And we all want our government to defend us and protect us from aggression both foreign and domestic.
There has got to be a better way to go about the fine details to make this all happen that doesn't oppress any one group in this country.
Yet, every election we let the people in charge divide us so they can conquer us.  We point fingers at each other and The Powers That Be keep their control over our rights and our wallets.
Does no one else see this but me?!?!
Some days I think I am all alone out here tilting at windmills.....

"I" am not the problem in this country.
I am NOT the malcontent, because I voted my conscience on a candidate who aligns with my principles.

Everyone in this country who voted for someone &/or a party whose principles they don't believe in because they were A-- too lazy to find out what that party ACTUALLY stands for and/or B--voted AGAINST someone instead of voting FOR someone, THOSE PEOPLE and all the people who came before them and have done the same exact thing, THEY are the people who will get what they deserve; a country that doesn't respect their rights or protect their freedoms.

In retrospect I feel only contentment about the choices I made for me, my family and my country this election season.  No "Wednesday Morning Buyer's Remorse" here!
I hope you can look beyond the party rhetoric at what your party actually stands for and feel the same way.

If you can't, then maybe you need to look closer at whom you are entrusting you and your children's futures to.

Don't just Question Authority....Challenge Authority!
Take back your power.

If so, go print the same Q out on Coupons dotcom and both can be used on 2 bottles of this product.
