Frugal Friday.....the June 17th Edition

So here are a few frugal things that happened here at Chez Sluggy this past week.......

*  Not really frugal but a win nonetheless.....

I culled more items from the house to send off to charity.
More stuff out of our lives that we can't/don't use.
Here's the tote I cleared out from the kitchen pantry.  I only kept 1 item that was in there-my immersion blender.  This is the 4th tote I've emptied this year. ;-)

*  I had a free $5 in Kohl's script that was expiring so I went last Sunday and found 2 small stocking stuffers for Daughter(not showing them in case she is reading).  After my 30% discount and $5 script I paid $1.06 on my Kohl's card.

*  The only eating out this past week was on Tuesday.  I picked up Subway since the kitchen was not fully operational while Hubs is painting.  Used a gift card to pay.

*   Again, another not strictly frugal item--I went through all my paper recipes.  They were either cut out from publications or printed from online or handwritten.

Here's the stack of recipes I threw out.  It's stuff I'll either never make or recipes I did make and we didn't care for so why have all this clutter laying around for no reason?

*  I did some Ibotta deals at Rite-Aid which I already recounted....

More stuff for free.  Some to keep, some to sell and some to give away.

*  On my Monday post I said I was doing Lobster this week.  I found out Weis(PMITA)Markets was going to have Lobster on sale for $2 less per lb. than the place I usually get them.  Even though it's a splurge I'll say when I can by paying less for the product than I was planning on.

*   I found money this past week!

When I was out on Tuesday I found a penny by the Rite-Aid waste basket.  Whoopee..... ;-)

Total Found in last Week.... .01¢
Total Found This Year.....$13.04

That's about all I've got for this past week.

Any frugal wins in your neck of the woods?  Let's hear all about them!

And have a good weekend!

Working on Genealogy for Someone Else & Finding Surprises!

It's interesting what I find myself involved in sometimes when working on genealogy.  You just never know whom you will interact with and why.

I am a member of the Find A Grave community.  This is a website that catalogs cemeteries and records whom is buried where.
There are many older cemeteries up in my neck of the woods and I've documented quite a few people in a cemetery in Saint Johns, PA.  Including this one........

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/112278362/harry-p-balliet

Harry P. Balliet, someone who died as an infant in 1892.(He's listed on the left hand bottom of this headstone(right side on the photo).

Back in January I received an email.  Here is how it began....

"Bom dia, Denise.

Tudo bem?

Prazer, me chamo Bruno da Silva Smith Filho e sou Brasileiro do Rio de Janeiro."

So I started reading(or trying to read)the email. WTF? It looked sort of like Spanish but not quite.  Then I saw "Rio de Janeiro" and realized it was written in Portuguese and was from Brazil!
I went to good old Google translate to decipher the message.

It seems this gentleman, Bruno da Silva Smith Filho, is Brazilian and he is looking for information on the Smith family.  Harry Balliet, the infant, had an older sister, Florence Balliet, who married Arthur Ray Smith, a veterinarian who worked in this area of PA.  Florence and Arthur had a son, Arthur Balliet Smith, who died in 1970.

Florence and Arthur are Bruno's 2 x GGrands and Arthur B. is his Great Grandfather.  After WWII Arthur B. had immigrated to Brazil so that's how Bruno's Smith line came to be in Brazil.  Florence and Arthur R. also had a daughter, Bette Lorraine Smith.
Bette married in 1944, in Palm Beach FL to Kenneth Shergold, an Australian resident and 11 days later they flew to Australia to settle and raise their family.  I found an obit for Kenneth that listed additional relatives of his in Australia, including a daughter(who had also passed away), 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren(who most probably are all still living).

Bruno wanted to find any lost branches of his family who he assumed were in the USA.  He didn't know there was only one branch beside his own left and it was in Australia!  I supplied him with whatever little information I could from here about his Australian relations but tracking down his living relatives there would be on him as I had little access to information on living folks in Australia other than information I could find in an obituary.

He also wanted to find his great grandfather's birth certificate from the US.  I had to let him know the image for it was not online, just the data from it but he'd have to contact the state where Arthur B. was born, Nebraska, for assistance and I gave him the website link.
Not knowing if Nebraska officials would mail the records to Brazil for Bruno or not, I offered to have them mail it to me, within the US and I'd forward it to him via USPS Priority mail.

We had a couple of back and forth emails but he stopped replying to me a few months ago.  I guess I'll email him once more to see if I can lend any more assistance with obtaining the birth certificate.

I just think it's amazing how I got up one morning and found an email out of the blue, from Brazil, written in Portuguese from a complete stranger related to a long dead infant who I catalogued the gravesite for on a website of cemeteries.  Every family has twists and turns in their ancestry, some more than others.
Who'd a thunk it! ;-)

Rite Aid on Sunday

I went out on Sunday and hit Ollie's(to use another 15%Q), Kohl's(too spend my free $5 script)and to a different Rite-Aid.  I had Bonus Cash expiring and a $7/$35 Catalina Q so here is what I bought on my card and of course there was an issue......

1 x Kotex on clearance=$1.69
2 x Colgate toothpaste on sale=$7.00
2 x Neutrogena facial mask BOGO50%=$4.93
2 x Wink condoms on clearance=$12.98 *
2 x Bic razors=$8.98
2 x Soft Disc menstrual discs on clearance=$4.98**
1 x CoverGirl concealer=$6.99***
1 x CoverGirl eye palette=$3.24
1 x CoverGirl eyebrow pencils=$4.69

This didn't fit in the above photo........

2 x YooHoo 3 pack on clearance=$.68
1 x Wild Harvest cat food on clearance=$1.92
1x V8 Sparkling drink on clearance=$1.62
SubTotal........$59.70

I used in Coupons....
1 x $7/$35 CatalinaQ=$7.00
1 x $1/1 Kotex L2CQ=$1.00
1 x $3/2 Colgate toothpaste L2CQ=$3.00
2 x $3/1 Colgate toothpaste In-AdQ=$6.00
2 x $3/1 Neutrogena IPQ=$6.00
2 x $5/1 Wink PeelieQ=$10.00
2 x $4/1 Bic In-AdQ=$8.00
1 x $4/1 CoverGirl face L2CQ=$4.00
2 x $4/1 CoverGirl eye Qs(1 L2C/1 IP)=$8.00
Total.......$53.00

$59.70-$53.00=$6.70 + .11¢ tax=$6.81 paid for with Bonus Cash

I earned back $6.00 in new BC for the menstrual discs(2 x $3)
I also earned $1 in rebates at Ibotta on the Kotex item so even with all the issues this was a .19¢ moneymaker. 8-)

Now let's talk about everything that went wrong with this transaction--

*  The condoms were suppose to be 75% off but rang up 50% off(same with the menstrual discs but I let that one go-you will see why soon).  I didn't catch the price problems until after she finalized the transaction.  So I pointed out the price issue on the condoms and after checking that these were suppose to be 75% off the cashier attempted to return and rering them so the difference I was owed would go back onto my Bonus Cash.  hahaha  Rite-Aid has changed it's system in such a way that this can't be done.  When she attempted to return the condoms they came up as a $1.28 return each.  WTF?!  Ok, even if you deduct the $5 Q that was used they should have come up as a $1.49 return each.  I am thinking that if you get back BC on a transaction(even if the item being returned didn't give any BC they are deducting the BC over the WHOLE transaction so every item has a bit of BC attached to it?

That's the only logical reason this happens.  So back to the return.  After about 15 mintues the cashier "solved" the return.  She had me use my driver's license, then she rang the return, but just one of the boxes(sine that would be the same amount due to me)and it rang up for $6.99???  I paid $6.49 each.
So she looked at me and said, "Can you live with that?"  Of course I said fine-I had been in thh store way to long at this point and giving me an extra .50¢ didn't hurt much. LOL  I didd eventually scan my reward card in and assumed I'd get $6.99 back on my BC but the register drawer popped open and it prompted the cashier to give me $6.99 in Cash.  I didn't object. ;-)  Instead of counting out .99¢ in cash, she popped a penny from their "if you need a penny" pot in the drawer and gave me $7.......

Why has R-A changed their system so you can't get a price correction without jumping through hoops like this?!?  Not only is it annoying for the customer but also the employee.  And it's all the fault of the computer's system not being updated in a timely manner!

** Now you can understand why I didn't turn around and inquire about a refund of the difference between what I was charged for the menstrual discs and what they were suppose to ring up.  Nobody wanted to go through all that again so I just left it. 8-)  But I should have been refunded another $2.48 on those.  They gave back $3 in BC each so they were free anyway so I just kept walking. lol

I didn't realize that the bag of 75% pet food was cat not dog food.  I won't return it, I'll just give it to the food bank.

***  Ok, my CoverGirl items should have gotten me to the $5 in BC reward but the total fell short by .08¢ of the $15 total needed. sigh.  So I'll buy another cheap item, use a $4/1 IPQ and get my $5 BC once I return to R-A.

Then I did a transaction on Hub's card.......

4 x GM/Posts cereals on sale=$12.00
1 x Nestle flavored water 75% off=.87¢
1 x V8 Energy drinks 75% off=$1.62
1 x SoftDisc menstrual discs clearance=$2.49
SubTotal.......$16.98

A $1/2 GM cereals L2CQ came off, as well as the $1/1 Peelie on the one box of cereal so $2 in coupons making this transaction $14.98+.05 tax=$15.03 paid for with BC.  I earned back $6 on this transaction(1 x $3 wyspend $10 cereal, 1 x $3 SoftDiscs).  Total after Qs/tax should have been $13.78 if the Soft Discs had rung up 75% off instead of 50% off. sigh.  I'm turning into an old softee I suppose by just letting things go.

This was the point at which we had the condom issue so after getting it fixed and the cashier knew to ring them up for 75% not 50% off I went back and got more(since they were moneymakers after using those $5 peelie Qs)and a couple other things to absorb the overage on my third card.......

5 x dog treats=$5.00
1 x Centrum calming vitamins 50% off=$9.99
4 x Wink condoms 75% off=$12.96
SubTotal......$27.95

I used a $2/1 PeelieQ on the vitamins, a $2/1 Centrum CatalinaQ and 4 x $5/1 Wink Peelies so $24 in Qs.  My total was $3.95 + .28¢ tax so $4.23 paid for from BC.  No new BC was earned back.

Total spent was $28.02 in BC.  I earned back $12 in new BC $7 in Cash and $1 on Ibotta making this an $8.02 spend down.  Should have been a $4.30 spend down but  I am leaving it alone. ;-)
I'll be putting alll those condoms and mentrual discs on eBay.  I didn't spend anything on them so as long as I can cover the eBay fees whatever I get for them is gravy.

This Week on the Dining Table

The "Well There You Go!" Edition....

Last time I was in Walmart I snapped this  photo.  It's the "feminine care section" and look at the display of M and M's next to the tampons!! lol
Yes, women need chocolate when they are hormonal.  At least the management at this Walmart agrees. ;-))

Onward to the meal planning!

Here's what was planned.....
1. Sunday--Nuggets, baked Sweet Potato Fries, Brussels Sprouts
2. Monday--Fend for Yourself
3. Tuesday--Chicken Marsala, Mashed Potatoes, Veggie TBD
4. Wednesday--Pork BBQ Sandwiches, Cole Slaw
5. Thursday--Tacos
6.  Friday--Take-out
7. Saturday--Leftovers

And here's what actually happened........
1. Sunday--Nuggets, baked Sweet Potato Fries, Brussels Sprouts
2. Monday--Fend for Yourself
3. Tuesday--Chicken Marsala, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans
4. Wednesday--Chicken Sandwiches, leftover Baked Beans
5. Thursday--Fend for Yourself
6.  Friday--Domino's Pizza
7. Saturday--BBQ pork sandwiches, Cole Slaw

Most everything happened though not as planned.  No tacos since we had a free pizza token from Domino's.

What got put into the freezer last week....
*  Veggie Dogs
*  Breaded Chicken

What got taken out of the freezer and used...
*   Chicken Breasts
*   Green Beans
*  "Chicken" Nuggets
*  Brussel Sprouts
*  BBQ Pork

I spent $58.14 on food/toiletries/HBA this last week(after using $10 in free gift cards)at Walmart, Aldi's AND Ollie's.
This brings our food/toiletries/paper goods Total to $61.99 for June.

There are 17 shopping days left in June.

I've earned $11.25 on Ibotta in June.
I've earned $0 on Checkout51 in June.
I've earned $4.00 on Coupons dotcom in June.
I've earned 683 points from shopping on Fetch in June.
I earned 5,702 points from food shopping on Shop Kick in June.
I've earned $3.71 from food shopping on Swag Bucks in June.

That's $15.25 in rebates(not counting the Shop Kick/Swag Bucks/Fetch)on $61.99 in grocery spending so in reality it's $46.74 spent after the 3 rebate apps I count.

My savings percentage for the last week was 42.46% (without "regular" Rite-Aid trips)and the monthly savings total for June comes in at 48.03% so far(w/out R-A).

Leftovers going into this week....Chicken Marsala, BBQ Pork, Cole Slaw.

Here is this week's "food plan".....
1. Sunday--Chicken Marsala leftovers, Green Beans
2. Monday--Subway Subs
3. Tuesday--Salmon, Carrots, Green Beans
4. Wednesday--Grilled Steak, Salad
5. Thursday--Lobster, Corn on Cob
6.  Friday--? Maybe eating out?
7. Saturday--?

What do I need to buy to fix everything on this menu?   Will have to buy lobster.  Cheapest these days is $9.99 lb. so it's a treat to have.  Also need to buy COC. The salmon is  one of those $2 clearance meal finds from Walmart I got a couple of months ago.  I've got a London Broil I'll marinate in Asian seasonings and grilled.  That will provide leftovers I'll either put in a salad or mix with a stir-fry Sat. or Sun.  The subs will be bought with a gift card I have.  It's a low grocery store need week for this menu so maybe a $30 shop this week for the lobster and corn.  ;-)

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

Any deals on food at your stores this week?
