What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

Any great deals on food at your stores this week?

This Week on the Dining Table

The "Daughter Cooked!" Edition--

The daughter decided she wanted to make paella this weekend.  Barring having a paella pan she opted to use my Dutch oven.
It came out quite good.  She used chicken, shrimp, chorizo and mussels for proteins.  And I ate it even though it was choke full of peas.  I was just grateful somebody here besides me had to make diner. ;-)

Moving On....

Onward to the meal planning!

This is what was planned--

1. Sunday--Fend For Yourself
2. Monday--BLTs
3. Tuesday--Fish, Cole Slaw, Veg TBD
4. Wednesday--Breakfast for Dinner
5. Thursday--Chicken Parm, Salad
6. Friday--Brats on Rolls w/Onions, Baked Beans, Veg TBD
7. Saturday--Leftovers

4. Wednesday--Breakfast for Dinner
5. Thursday--Chicken Parm, Sugar Snap Peas
6. Friday--Brats on Rolls w/Onions, Baked Beans
7. Saturday--Leftovers

Everything planned was served.
Last week saw lots of cooking.
I also picked up two rotisserie chickens on special at the Shursave market so those will be sliced/diced up and become Chicken Salad and Chicken pieces on Salads this coming week.

Last week saw 5 nights of home cooked dinners, 2 night of leftovers/fend for yourself, 0 nights of Take-Out or Eating Out.

A trip to Weis, and 2 trips to Shursave market brought the weekly food spending to $85.21 and the monthly total to $400.84.  I am now officially over my $400 budget for food.

I've got $0 left in the food budget for June and 5 days left in my shopping month.

My savings percentages last week was 48.20%(without Rite-Aid trips)and June's monthly savings total so far is at 53.46%.

Leftovers going into this week......Cabbage, 2 slices of Corned Beef, 2 helpings of baked Flounder for Daughter, and 7 pieces of Chicken Parm(I made enough for planned-overs),

Here is this week's "food plan".....

1. Sunday--Paella
2. Monday--Chicken Parm(leftover), Pear Gorgonzola Salad
3. Tuesday--Caesar Salad w/Grilled Chicken
4. Wednesday--Seafood Enchiladas, Rice, Beans
5. Thursday--Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches, Cuke Salad
6. Friday--Assorted Things(Stuffed Peppers, Salad, Etc.)
7. Saturday--Leftovers

This week will see 6 new meals cooked, 1 night of leftovers/FFY and 0 nights of Take-Out/Eating Out.
Daughter used what I had in the pantry/freezer or paid for ingredients herself for the paella so that didn't add to my food spending in June.
I've got some items to make but don't have enough for everyone....leftover ground beef and 2 peppers for stuffed peppers(I don't care for green pepper so I'll have the last bag of Pear Gorgonzola Salad, plus a couple other things here that need to be used).

I've been Jonesing for seafood Enchiladas so I'm going to make some this week.  I've already got the shrimp, fake crab, cheese, spices and tortillas so why not?

What needs buying for this menu? Romaine lettuce and a cuke.  We also need milk, OJ, sour cream, almond milk, Cool Whip(for pies for July 4th cook-out and it's on sale now so I'll buy it ahead).  I'm hoping to get through the rest of June on $20 or less.

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

This Week on the Dining Table

The "Birthday" Edition--

If you hadn't heard, Sunday was my birthday.  Hubs got me flowers that morning and I had received 2 cards in the mail(and 1 from Hubs in person).  Amended-I received another card in yesterday's mail.  8-)
4 family members called on the phone, Daughter made me the dinner I requested(tempura shrimp and sweet potato wedges)and Hubs made me a carrot cake(also my request)from scratch.  THUD!  The man will be 60 in less than 3 months and this was the very first cake he ever made from scratch.  And it was down right tasty too! ;-)

Moving On....

Onward to the meal planning!

Here's what was planned last week--
1. Sunday--Turkey Breast, leftover Stuffing, Gravy, Butternut Squash, Sweet Potatoes
2. Monday--Lasagna
3. Tuesday--Turkey Casserole or Pot Pie(using leftover Sunday turkey)
4. Wednesday--Tuna Noodle Casserole
5. Thursday--Leftovers
6. Friday--Baked Ham, Rolls, Corn Casserole, Cabbage
7. Saturday--Leftovers

And this is what actually happened--
1. Sunday--Turkey Breast, leftover Stuffing, Gravy, Butternut Squash, Sweet Potatoes
2. Monday--Lasagna
3. Tuesday--Chicken Pot Pie(using chicken from the freezer)
4. Wednesday--Leftovers
5. Thursday--Chicken Quesadillas, Spanish Rice, Refried Beans
6. Friday--Baked Ham, Corn Casserole, Cabbage
7. Saturday--Leftovers

Last week saw 5 nights of home cooked dinners, 2 nights of leftovers/fend for yourself, 0 night of take-out and 0 night of Eating out.  Mostly everything happened but not when planned always.  We ate lots of leftovers so the Tuna Casserole didn't happen....that goes onto this week's menu.

2 Trips to Weis and 1 trip to the Shursave Market was the extent of the shopping last week and the bills came to $132.74 for all.  That brought January's food spending total to $314.74
There are 9 days left in my shopping month.

I didn't set a food budget for January when I did my wrap up of December's food budget/spending.
The reason being is there are often good deals/loss leaders in January here and I didn't want to do a low spend and miss out on them.

If I had I would have not gotten--
6 large bags of Lindt truffles for $2, 6 boxes of .67¢ pasta, 8 cans of .60¢  Campbell's soup, 3/4 lb. of fresh flounder for $3.55, 2 boxes of .97¢ Raisin Bran, 6 cans of crushed tomatoes for FREE, a cup of Greek Yogurt for FREE(plus I got a $1.25 cash rebate for buying this), 4 MM OJ for .89¢ each, 8 cans of .62¢ Progresso soup, 1 lb. pack of Mozzarella(after instant $2 off/sale/doubled .50¢Q)for $1.99, 4 cans of  good chili for $4.47 total(rain check/doubled Qs) and $25.52 worth of Clorox products after sale/instant $5 off/$3Qs for $12.98.  These were all things I didn't necessarily "need" this month, but are items we will use eventually.
Since I don't have to keep a set budget for food I can buy when it's low and not buy when items are high in the price cycle.  Down the road this will mean less food spending/shopping in Feb. or Mar. or beyond.

Seeing as I am over $300 spent for January I'll be more mindful of picking up "wants"(ie-things I don't "need" right now but will need later)over the last 9 days in January.  If I come in under $500 in January it will all be good. 8-))

My savings percentages last week was 55.93% and the monthly savings so far ends up at 54.06%(without Rite-Aid trips added in).

Leftovers going into this week....... lasagna, ham, cabbage, corn casserole. There isn't enough lasagna for a whole meal so that will be lunches for Hubs for a couple of days.

Here is this week's "food plan".....

1. Sunday--Tempura Shrimp, Sweet Potato Fries
2. Monday--Beef Shepherd's Pie(my version w/Cornbread not Mashed Taters on top)
3. Tuesday--Birthday Dinner Out?
4. Wednesday--leftover Ham Slices, leftover sides
5. Thursday--Beef Goulash, Rice
6. Friday--Tuna Noodle Casserole
7. Saturday--Leftovers

This week will see 4 new meals cooked, 2 nights of leftovers, 1 night of Take-out/Eat-Out unless we need to eat more leftovers to use them up then 1 of the new meals will get pushed back into next week.

The only thing I need to buy to make these meals is nothing.  I stocked up on ground beef plus bought 2 bags of frozen veggies last week so the Shepherd's Pie was done last night.  Peppers and London Broil for the Goulash is in the freezer and I have everything for the Tuna Casserole.

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

This Week on the Dining Table

The "The Bombogenesis" Edition--

We got a little snow from the Bombogenesis aka Bomb Cyclone aka Nor'Easter that hit the East Coast last week.  Just about 2 inches in total over a couple days.  My brother down in SEVA got 12 inches at his house.  They don't "do" snow down there and certainly not a foot of it at a time.  He's been shoveling for 4 days now and they haven't gone anywhere since it started snowing as the roads are still a mess.
The photo above is of a fridge magnet I saw this past Summer in a gift shop in Wyoming. lolz

NYE was finger foods of items picked up for cheap and I turned some premade meatballs Daughter bought this Summer into cocktail meatballs with a great sauce using a can of cranberry glop and a bottle of chili sauce.  I used part of the leftover Roast from Christmas to make hash one night.  A Stouffer's meatloaf picked up cheap at Weis last week was served with leftover mac and cheese also from Christmas with fresh asparagus as well.  The ravioli was a quick meal and the enchiladas(a big production)happened the night Daughter's BF arrived from Louisiana.

2 Trips to Weis was the extent of the shopping last week and the bill came to $60.60 for all.  That brought January's food spending total to $60.60.

This Week on the Dining Table

It's the "You Really Need All This Food?" Edition......

This is what College Boy "insisted" on taking back to school with him(well except for the baking trays and that pen).  All this extra food plus the case of water I dropped off in his room when I went to pick him up a week ago and 2 containers of peanut butter cookies and assorted sodas.....and the Easter candy I gave him before he left so I didn't have to mail it in a week's time.

This is the boy who we are paying for a full meal plan for as well, at the school!
He only has 6 weeks left until the semester ends.  I would have hated to see what he felt he needed if he had had to slog it out longer than that. lolz

I am just enjoying the relative peace and quiet reigning in the house now that he is safely ensconced back at school.  8-)

Onward to the meal planning!

Here's what was planned last week.......

1. Sunday--Roasted Chicken, Stuffing, Deviled Eggs and Roasted Carrots and Cauliflower
2. Monday--CB's Birthday Meal out

7. Saturday--Philly Cheese Steaks

5 meals cooked at home.
3 new meals and 2 nights of leftovers in some form or another and 2 nights of Take-Out/Eating Out.

As for my grocery spending......3 tiny  trips that came to $19.47 combined and a larger shop at Weis which was $64.65, making my weekly total $84.12.
I have spent $181.41 in all for March so far.
Between $68.59 and $118.59 of the potential $250-$300 March food budget left to spend with 17 days left in the month.

Leftovers going into this week......Halushki, Assorted Veggies, Breaded Fish, Taco filling(CB made this), Coleslaw, and Roasted Chicken meat.
I'll make Chicken soup from the leftover chicken and throw some of the leftover roasted veggies into that.  Fish will become a fish sandwich for 1 lunch.

Yah....famous last words. lolz

This Week On The Dining Table

This is the "Not Doing Much Cooking" Week.

Here's what was planned last week--

Sunday--Potato Crusted Flounder, Roasted Potatoes and Onions, Brussel Sprouts
Monday--Tacos, Corn
Tuesday--Lasagna, Garlic Bread, Salad
Wednesday--Chicken medallions, Spinach, Squash or Zucchini
Thursday--Pork Chops, Green Beans(from last Summer's garden), Mashed taters, Applesauce
Friday--homemade Pizza-maybe barbeque chicken pizza(using more of that mozzarella cheese & cooked chicken), Green Salad
Saturday--Leftovers

We were good with this plan until Wednesday.
Thursday and Saturday we had Sausage Sandwiches(one night w/Coleslaw, the other night w/Corn on the Cob).  The local market had a new brand from NJ on special for $1.99 lb. so I picked up a few packages.  Making those was quick and easy and didn't involve the oven and I jammed 2 pkgs. in the freezer for later.  Friday I took the rest of the chicken breast meat from that 8.5lbs. I got for less than .99¢ lb.(After using some for fresh chicken sandwiches for lunches....), and made chicken and dumplings.  I threw in baby carrots that were getting old that needed using up.

So Pork Chops and Pizza are moving to this week's menu....again. lolz

I spent more anticipated last week because of the sausage patties on sale, the son wanted a frozen pizza and I hit the produce stand in town on Saturday morning and spend an additional $10 on fresh produce.  So last week,  I spent  $56.36 on  $83.78 worth of groceries at 1 store & 1 produce stand.
If I don't buy any more groceries until Thursday, August 1st, I will have spent $357.86 for food in July.

**We did have some food waste this week.......Sluggy hangs her head in shame.......
We hardly ever have food waster anymore here so I'm not too broken up over this happening.  I just don't want it to become a regular thing, ya know?
A small portion of Coleslaw and a bigger portion(2 maybe?)of Fajita filling mix went to Food Waste Heaven last week.

Leftovers, that are still aok, going into this week's plan......1 portion of Lasagna, 2 sausage patties, 3 helping of Chicken & Dumplings.

This week is Band Camp so #2 Son won't be here for dinner all week.
I can't eat Thursday, due to Colonoscopy prep(yuck!)so I am not cooking and Hubs is on his own.
(I told him to get fast food because I don't even want to smell food cooking that day. lol)

(I've made bold the leftover items I've used in the menu below.)

 Here's this week's meal plan--

Sunday--Leftovers or Whatever you can Find in the Fridge
Monday--Leftover Lasagna for me, Sausage Sammies for Hubs
Tuesday--Chicken & Dumplings
Wednesday--Pork Chops, Green Beans, Roasted Taters
Thursday--Fend for Yourself night, I can't eat. eek!
Friday--Probably Chinese Take-Out as I won't feel like cooking but will be ravenous lol
Saturday--No Clue yet....maybe that grilled Pizza I never made ?

On the shopping list for these meals--turkey deli meat(for my lunches), bread and possibly more fruit.
There are a few Catalina deals at Weis PMITA Markets this week I might be tempted to do(Unilever and Purina)but I'm not sure yet if I will.  I might hit up the bread outlet this week as we are low on all bread products.

I'm figuring about $20 for the list above.....more if I do the Catalina deals.

That's what's appearing on the kitchen table this week here at Chez Sluggy.  Not much cooking or shopping going into August.

What's getting fixed and served at your house this week?
