The Great Summer Road Trip of 2013.....Day Two

We were up bright and early(ok, maybe I lie?)on Wednesday morning.  Hubs went down to the lobby for some breakfast(free with the room but sadly pitiful pickings)and I took a pass on the repast and got myself ready to leave.

And as soon as we hit the car, we hit a snag.....

At last we were ready to hit the road. Day Two was a long day of driving as we had to get from north central OH to north IL near the WI state line.

We stopped to fill the gas tank before hopping onto the Interstate and I snapped this shot of the convenience store window..

Would you look at the price of a gallon of milk??
Seriously.....$2.75?!
We pay just shy of $4.00 in PA, land of the draconian dairy lobby.
Next time we go to OH, I should load the cooler up with moo juice!

No sooner than we got onto the interstate, we saw this......

Yep, Construction Season was in full bloom in August on the Ohio Turnpike.

After we hit Indiana we needed to stop for lunch.  So we got off the IN Turnpike, or tried to.  Seems the exit booths in IN are NOT manned, so you have to pay via an automatic toll taker thingy.  The car in front of us at the exit booth couldn't seem to figure out how to pay.  We sat there what seemed like hours before Hubs made the unlawful decision to back out of the lane and get into the other lane which was empty.
Yes, we are criminal fugitives now in the eyes of the state of Indiana.

Finally got out of the toll area and ventured into La Porte IN to find some food.
I found it interesting that we were in Indiana and driving down Indiana Ave.

Yes I AM easily amused sometimes.....

We finally settled on Arby's since it wasn't McDonald's and we wanted to get back on the road quickly as we still had miles to cover before our official stop for the day outside of Chicago.

Here is a video of my lunch......can you tell I am bored?

Then it was back onto the highway where I saw my first Triple Tractor Trailer Truck.  They are not allowed on the highways in PA.....

And then another one.....

We passed this building driving down the interstate outside of Elkhart Indiana.....

I looked it up when we got home.
It's The RV Hall of Fame.
They have a museum of RVs.
Only in America folks......

Ok, so I got bored with taking pictures of triple trucks fairly quickly so I started taking shots of these....

Every town we went by seemed to have a water tower with it's name on it.

Then we passed a big patch of weeds that had turned autumn colors already, in mid August....seriously?!

And after awhile we happened upon our first sign of what was just on the other side of the Indiana line.......

And then we hit it......Chicago traffic.
YIKES!
Now I realize when I mapquested(that is a verb, right?) this route out I made one strategic error.
I let the route take us through DOWNTOWN CHICAGO and the Skyway.
DOH!!!

Here are some shots I took as we approached from the IN side......when I wasn't closing my eyes and praying or hanging on for dear life as Hubs zigzagged through 6 lanes of traffic looking for our lane.....

Let's just say things got a little tense about now and bad words were flying about the cabin and I could have used a belt of something strong or a tranq but had to settle for chewing my fingernails and the thought of taking pictures was frowned upon by my chauffeur.

And I will stop momentarily here to bitch about highway tolls.
Really OH, IN and IL??
It cost us over $20 in assorted tolls for a one way trip through your states to Chicago.   That's some price to pay for the fun of being caught in the cluster f*cks of traffic that your highways are!
My one and only trip to/through Chicago before this was via train and THAT was a nightmare ride as well.
I have to say that neither is my idea of fun.  How do you people who live here deal with this all. the. time.?

I've now driven in Chicago, Metro NY/NJ area and Washington DC traffic and I have to say that I'd rather deal with the latter two than Chicago's nightmare.
I think about Tanner and how she wants to move to this part of the world and I just want to shake my head...... lol

After we got out of the insanity that are the roadways around Chicago, we made tracks to our stop for the day in Palatine IL.
I was finally going to meet in person someone I've been online friends with since about 1999.

On the way, we passed this intriguing building with a police car sitting at the end of that driveway.....

Turns out it is the Village Center for Inverness Illinois.
Those turret looking things are called "The 4 Silos" and it's a community landmark.
And don't speed through Inverness or the cops will get you.
Hey, I'm just sayin'....  ;-)

Finally we got to my friend Marsha's place.  After hugs and a short visit with her roommate too we went out to a local eatery, The Palatine Inn for a snack and more gabbing.
I got a plate of Kijafa Cherry Crepes and it was HUGE!  Marsha took half of it home for her roommate to enjoy.

We took a couple of photos outside by their garden before we took Marsha home and hit the road again.....

It was great to finally meet ya Marsha!

Back into the car pointing north and onward to near the Wisconsin border.

Even though it was rush hour, sooner than I expected we came into the town were we would be staying a couple of nights.

A typical little Midwestern town with a picturesque Main St.

And your typical Midwestern rush hour commuter train delayed us a couple extra minutes.....

And then we were pulling into the driveway at the one and only Sonya Ann's house.
And Sonya Ann was NOT home! lolz

Ok, so her hubs Den WAS home, as was the often maligned DJ so we got a nice laid back welcome.
Sonya had run out to the store.

But as soon as she returned from her errand, the frenetic energy and mayhem ratcheted up 4 notches and the drinking began.
Sonya Ann hugged me and then put a drink in my hands saying, "drink this!"
Pretty much everything about that night afterwards is a blur in my mind.....

Oh, I do remember Den made us a yummy Chinese dinner(2 different entrées!)and it was as good or better than anything at my local Asian restaurant.  As my kids use to say to me when they were little, "You sure are a good cooker!"  And that Dennis is!

After dinner, time just seemed to fly.  Everyone was getting along so well.
I suspect all the liquor had something to do with that......hehehe

And now I am going to post a photo and Sonya Ann is going to bitch slap me for doing this....but in a loving and kind sort of way......

The woman doesn't like her picture being took and I can't figure out why not!?

Oh, I heard me some stories that night......about her kids(when DJ wasn't in the room), her in laws, her friends in RL and also the internet buddies(I bet most of you reading this had burning ears that evening....hehehe).

But the funny thing about that night is that I can't remember a single story.
Dang!  I knew the liquor that never stopped being poured was all part of her evil plot so I'd never tell her secrets.  Otherwise, she would have had to kill me and hide my body....and honey, that's a whole lot of body to be hiding!

Just go ahead and draw devil horns on all those grinning faces in that photo because I know you want to and it would be quite accurate for what was probably being said at the time that photo was snapped.

And thus ended Day Two of the Great Summer Road Trip of 2013.

To Be Continued......

Random Goings-On at Chez Sluggy

Well the HVAC compressor is on order.....lovely......
Anybody want to lay odds when our new heating system is actually operational?

**********************************

Here's my daily eating regime lately.....

Trying to keep hydrated and the mucus thinned out as much as possible.
Add in doses of Vitamin C and lots of hot tea, lemon and honey too.
I haven't lost my voice yet but glands are still swollen and the throat sore.
Can't wait to see what happens next....

******************************

Hubs car died....yes, the new-to-us since June car.  So I am stranded at home until next week probably.  He has out of town business tomorrow and is having his car towed to the shop on Friday.
Who knows what is wrong and how long until it's fixed?
So much for the excess cash at the end of this month to put toward furniture if this is a costly repair.  Sigh.

********************************

I am continuing to sell a couple of pieces of fabric a week.  The good thing about Etsy is that it's only something like .40¢ per item to list it and it's online for 4 months.  Ebay charges about that but you only get 30 days of exposure to potential buyers.
And a buyer there sent me a note with cash in it.  Seems I mismeasured the fabric length I sent her and it was double the size I had put in the listing.  She can use the extra so just sent me some more cash for it.  She could have kept the extra and not said a word since I was clueless.  Nice to come across an honest person, isn't it?

I'd love to sell this fabric quicker but a slow steady drippy stream of pieces leaving the house will work. ;-)

******************************

eBay is still sucking eggs.
I've had quite a few potential buyers outside the US asking about shipping overseas.
I use to sell A LOT of items overseas, but that was before the USPS raised their international rates to criminal levels(see highway robbery).
Now I don't know why I bother to answer these "how much to ship to XXX?" inquiries.  The prices I have to quote are ridiculous.

Yesterday some guy in Argentina offered me an amount for a toy with a Best Offer feature that I accepted.  Not a half hour after I sent him an invoice he emails that he's changed his mind.
Asshole!

And then I get a "Question to Seller" from eBay and here is exactly what it said.....

Dear slugmama,
есть ли у вас доставка в Россию и сколько она будет стоить?

WTF?? LOLZ

Honestly, don't go on an English speaking platform and try to do business if you can't speak English!  You don't see me trying to buy stuff on a Russian language board.....that would be a ridiculous thing for me to do.
I don't know....maybe I am just getting too old and cranky to deal with people on eBay.  8-)

**************************************

The now dead car has this load in the trunk that was suppose to go to Salvation Army this week.  It won't get to go now until the weekend.....

This load also includes some hair coloring and women's plus size clothing that got forgotten in past loads.
Plus I have another full load here in the house just waiting for room to put it into the car.
So I am hoping to drop off two full loads to Sallie's this weekend.

*************************

Oh!, I almost forgot.  I went to get something out of the fridge in the garage last night and the fridge wasn't running.
Terrific.
Turns out the outlet is dead so now I have a heavy duty extension cord running from my den into the garage so we don't lose the food in that fridge. Oh, it's always something here, isn't it? grrrrr

******************************

Ok, I am off to go through more boxes from storage and decide whether to list any of what's in there. Then I'll finish writing up Part Two of the Summer Road Trip to post.....and you KNOW you don't want to miss reading that! ;-)

This Week on The Dining Table

The "It's Indian Summer Here and I'm Getting Sick" Edition.......

Since we have had a frost(not to mention 3 inches of snow last week!)it is truly Indian Summer outside now.
The Wind was wild here last night.  Power going off and on and off and on again as those storms that hit the Midwest rolled through.

Late yesterday, I started feeling puny.  My sinuses can't decide if they want to hurt or not and the barometric pressure changes going on here aren't helping much.

Today it hit 57 degrees here and was sunny but windy.  I didn't get much sleep last night so I'll be crashing as soon as I get this post sent.  I am beat.

Here are the meals that were planned last week--

Sunday--Burgers on Rolls, Collard Greens
Monday--Mushroom Parmesan, Salad
Tuesday--Roasted Chicken, Carrots, Stuffing
Wednesday--leftover Chicken Pot Pie
Thursday--Steak, Roasted Asparagus & Potatoes
Friday--Baked Fish, Coleslaw, Green Beans
Saturday--Chicken & Dumplings

Everything eaten as planned except no Chicken & Dumplings.  We had leftovers that night or just fended for ourselves.  I might have had a chicken sandwich that evening but I can't for the life of me remember now.

As for food spending last week....another bad spending week.  There were 4 trips to the store and I spent $76.66 on $131.06 worth of groceries at 3 different stores.  I've spent $62.45 OVER my $400 November food budget so far and there are 12 days left for this month.
Whatever.  8-P

Leftovers going into this week--leftover chicken(breast and legs/thighs) and coleslaw.

Here's this week's meal plan---

Sunday--Chinese take-out
Monday--Slaw Dogs, Fries and Veggies
Tuesday--Chicken & Dumplings(as I am getting sick and this sounds great!)
Wednesday--Leftover Chinese take-out
Thursday--Sloppy Joes on Onion Rolls
Friday--Pork Chop, Green Beans, Beets, Applesauce
Saturday--Ravioli and Sauce, Green Salad

What I need to purchase for this menu?......
Salad Greens.
On Saturday I'll probably go out and pick up what I need for Turkey day....like a TURKEY(lol), celery, rutabaga and I might buy some pies instead of making them this year.

Price Chopper has a deal this week.....Correction*** This deal is at Weis Markets!.....Mrs. Smith's pies are BOGO, plus if you buy 1 Mrs. Smith pie and an Edwards crème pie(love the key lime one!), there is a $1 PC Q in the weekly ad.  Add in that you can stack this with the ManQs for Edwards pies($.75/1 which doubles to $1)and the Mrs. Smith ($1/1)......So you get 3 pies(one is free)and you get $3 off the cost of the 2 you are paying for, so it comes out to something like $5 for 3 pies.
And that is one less thing I have to make for Thanksgiving, besides making ROOM in the Fridge for them. hehehe

So just a turkey, some veggies and pies later this week and I hope to spend nothing the last week of November on food.  I'll have my $10 gift cert. from the local market so if we need anything next week besides the Turkey day fixings I can use that and not spend any cash.
Sweet.

But then again, I feel like dog doo doo right now so this week's menu may NOT happen if Hubs doesn't feel like cooking this stuff if I take to my bed sick.  I'm sure he'll be fine and he won't starve while I live on Jello until I feel human again.
I went and bought myself a quart of Hot and Sour Soup at the Chinese place for lunch today and have been slurping on that all day to soothe my throat.  Just don't really feel like eating any solid food today.

Just a warning.....if you don't see my blog updates much this week, I'm just sleeping off whatever this sickness turns out to be.  I hope it passes quickly tho. 8-(

What got fixed and served at your house this week?

Recreating The Past

You know how a couple years ago it was all the rage to recreate a photo from a place you had been years or decades before and then superimpose the new photo of the location over the original?

Like in this Chevy commercial....

Or at this website HERE.

Well I sort of did that back in September on the Family Reunion trip when I revisited the "old home place".
Here is the same location in 2 photos, 51 years apart.....Summer of 1962, Fall of 2013.....

Sadly, only one of those folks is still with us today.
That would be me.....the littleest one in the group.

Maybe next year I can bring my daughter along and we can sit for a family portrait in that same spot. 8-)

Certainly not I!

So I hiked up to Rite-Aid Saturday morning with a couple of $2 Lindt coupons from Facebook and got these.....

On sale for 2/$4-have to buy 2 to get this price.
I used 2 x $2/1 Lindt bar coupons from F/B.

Out of Pocket Total.....$0.00

Free chocolate works for me! lolz

Now I have $9 in +Ups to use by next Wednesday.  There was nothing I wanted this past week that was a great deal at Rite-Aid so now I have to come up with something to spend those +Ups on.
If you Rite-Aid shop, what are you buying there this week?

What's Been Happening at Chez Sluggy

Frankly, most of what's been happening is quite boring so I don't mind if you just skip over this post. 8-)

This......

....is now firmly secured back into place in my mouth.
A big shout out to my Awesome Dentist!
She responded to my emergency call within the hour and 2 hours later I was in her office getting my crown but back in.
And she didn't even charge me anything. 8-)

********************************

It's been a week now and still no word from the contractor about a new compressor for the HVAC system.
Sigh.
I am guessing this lack of information means we are going to have to wait for something to be shipped from overseas.
Sigh.

********************************
And while I am sighing.....lol.......let's discuss eBay sales.
I am just gob smacked at how anemic eBay sales have been.  It's so slow I just cant' even get up enough enthusiasm to finish listing the entirety of my 50 free listings!
I finally sold 1 item this week!
Then I had put an item on auction instead of BIN and it ended last Sunday for a very disappointing amount.  Even so, it DID sell, but as of this morning the buyer/winner has NOT paid me for it.
So frustrating....

And the other HIGHLIGHT of my eBay week was a potential buyer who wanted to buy a pretty rare NIB old Power Rangers toy I have listed.
It's so rare I have it listed for $175.
Gulp
And that price is very reasonable compared what others have sold for.
My target buyer is an adult collector, not someone's mom or dad buying this for Junior to play with.

Anyway, I get someone emailing me about the toy.
There are 3 possibilities on who this buyer is....either a collector, a dealer who wants it for pennies to resell it to a collector or a kid using his parent's eBay account.

Potential buyer says they really really really want it and to make HIM an offer.
What???   This person has it all backwards.....he's suppose to offer ME something.  lol

As for how much I want for it?
Duh....$175.

They go on to tell me they can't afford that.
So I retort that I have "Make an Offer" feature enabled on the item so they can offer me less.
(I also have MAO set up to automatically accept offers of at least XX$s so serious buyers aren't waiting around on me to respond when they make an offer.)

So they go and make me an offer.....guess how much this clown offers me?

$11

And when I rejected it I enclosed a note like this....
"$11?  Seriously dude??
Yah, I'm probably dealing with a kid here or someone pretending to be a kid so I take pity on them and sell it for nothing.

"$11 Man" has now been blocked from buying/bidding on my crap.

As of now I am up to 3 items sold(2 paid for)on eBay in the last 14 days.
Pitiful......

*********************************

In better news, over on Etsy I have now sold 21 items in the 19 days it's been open.
I have over 1000 views in my shop so traffic is building.
One thing I don't get over on Etsy is this "favorite" feature.  Someone can "favorite" an item in your store.  What significance does this have?  Is it making me money?  No.

If they like something so much, why don't they BUY it?? lolz
Someone buying one of my fabrics is the only true indicator of "favorite" I care about.  8-))

**********************************

And since eBay seems to be rolling over and playing dead and the local Fire Dept. lady who asks for donations for their raffle each year never called me this year, there is all this that went to the Salvation Army last weekend.....

And there is all this that is going there later today.....

And today I am collecting more items to ship off to Sallie's.  If we go out Sunday I might have another load full by then to drop off.

******************************************

I went to the Podiatrist earlier this week as well.

The verdict is that my feet are too small.
Earth shattering I know......lolz

Add in that my legs are not straight so when I step my feet roll to the outside and then to compensate, the feet roll to the inside, which puts stress on certain muscles and joints, which makes my feet hurt like a sonofabitch sometimes.
Ok, so he explained it differently but that's what I heard.

Otherwise my feet are normal structurally, nothing broken or severely out of place, and I have good range of motion.
So the only thing that will help me at this point is to continue to lose weight(duh)and to wear diabetic shoes with good insoles or some other custom made footwear, since my feet are oddly shaped(wide as they are long.....I have cubed feet).

The sound of "Ka-ching" is ringing in my ears since this doesn't sound inexpensive.
Heck, I am really going to have to get $175 for that Power Rangers toy now to pay for these sort of shoes! ;-)

The only other thing the podiatrist can do for my feet if icing, resting them and pricey shoes doesn't help is to give me cortisone injections where the pain is located every few months.  But we aren't looking at that yet.

*****************************

On the Turkey Day grocery tally to get to my gift certificate front......went to that store earlier this week and I am $6.48 from having spent enough to trigger the cert.   So Saturday we'll be picking up about that much in groceries and then I am DONE.

I've got my menu made up for Turkey Day too.  Now to make sure I have everything I need to cook it.

*********************************

Can you believe that November is half over already!?!?
Dang.

The first paycheck of the month flew into the account yesterday so now I can start paying bills.
Goody! lol

I sent off a check for Daughter's next 6 months of rent yesterday and then transferred that amount from the college account back into our checking account.

****************************

I did a little genealogy work for someone this week.  Found them some goodies they didn't have.
I really need to email a couple of folks who contacted me from Ancestry and a post I did on Philip Packer a few months ago.  Might be that we all are related.

The tests came back from my son's Y-DNA sample last week too.  Very curious findings on that and not at all what my Hubs thought his DNA is/was.  More later on that.

****************************

Speaking of living rooms......when I went to return the wheelchair we rented in October I stopped over at Big Lots since I was in that area.  They have a sofa advertised that I think might fit in the living room plan.
It's a small chaise sectional like the one we found at Just Cabinets this Summer......

It's a better maker than the other one at Just Cabinets and they want $100 less than JC for it.
Comfort is comparable to the other one too.
In person though, this one had this green cast to the color.  I am thinking it was because of the fluorescent lighting in the store but can't be sure.  Maybe I'll go back with Hubs and see if they'll let me take one of the pillows(the backs are the same fabric as the upholstery on the sofa)outside to see it in natural light.  I didn't think to do that yesterday.

Here is the other sofa contender.....

What I REALLY want is a leather or faux leather chaise sofa in this color and small size/style.
If anybody knows where they sell that, please let me know!  I hate to have to settle this time.

Here's the co-ordinating accent chair.....

Only thing is this chair is for looking at and not sitting on.
Very uncomfortable so I think I'll take a pass on this.

They also had this recliner that I think my Daughter would just ADORE for her Birthday.......

Now how to get it to Louisiana is the problem! lolz

***************************

This weekend I need to get out into the garage and do some organizing and cleaning since the temps are going to get into the 50's(and maybe 60's)here.
It's a disaster out there....again!
Too much hauling stuff into the garage and NOT putting it away in the correct spot and not enough hauling stuff OUT of the garage.
Plus we still have boxes out there from cleaning out the dining/living room so those need to be dealt with.

And Hubs and I have been on a liquor bender of sorts.  The last few months have been a Spending Spree of adult beverages.  And as I don't NEARLY drink the stuff as quickly as Hubs seems to be going through it my stuff is all over the place.  Add in that some beer I bought this summer for #1 Son for part of his Christmas present he doesn't want.(He is uber picky about not letting beer sit for 2-3 months between when you buy it and you consume it)  I now have about 3 6-packs of microbrewery beers I can't give him and I don't drink beer! lol  I'm going to try to get Hubs to drink it instead....I don't think that will be a hard sell. ;-)

And the bbq smoker & wood chips needs to be unearthed out there, so we can use it soon.

Otherwise this weekend we don't have much planned.  Cleaning, Salvation Army, a quick trip to the grocery store, maybe cleaning out the roots from the garden beds but no other outside work as the leaves are all raked and hauled off already.  I could get Hubs to rake the leftover leaves into the back garden bed though to decompose there.  Yep, I think I'll do that.

*****************************
Ok, I have stuff to do.....more fabric to photograph and measure for Etsy, toys to list on eBay, a garage to organize and on and on and on.

So what's going on at your place this week/weekend?

Sluggy
