March To-Do List.....Update

I have pared down my monthly To-Do Lists.  Between being ill for 2 months this Winter and not feeling much energy to "do" I felt it was better to have a smaller list and actually feel like I was accomplishing something rather than facing a long list of items I didn't get to when the month was over.

With that said, here's what I wanted to get done in March.........

*  Pay Bills  DONE  If nothing else gets done, this does.  I paid two irregular bills early/for the year and earned a small discount off the price of each bill.  Every little bit helps, right?

*  Read 1 Book  DONE
"Twain's End" by Lynn Cullen

This author is making a career of writing historical novels(taking famous folks and writing about their lives in a part historical/part fictional way).

Cullen is a very astute writer and this tome was interesting and enjoyable and dare I say-a page turner.  Having studied Samuel Clemens life a bit myself it follows pretty closely to whom he actually was.....an insecure, narcissist borderline megalomaniac in his later life  as reported from first hand accounts of the people who knew and/or loved him.
This tale is told from the perspective of his personal secretary(Isabel van Kleek)and her relationship with Mark Twain.  It's apparent after reading this book that one of the most beloved popular American authors of the 19th century was a personally tortured man who made those around him miserable.
I recommend this book.

I wanted to read two books and had the time to but after I got started on the second book in March I lost interest in that one temporarily and picked up a third book to read.  Then this month I took a different book to see our eldest son so now have three books started but not finished yet for April. lol
I forsee lots of reading this month.  ;-)

*  Purge Coupon Inserts  DONE

I went through my inserts and pulled ones that were 1 to 4 months old and had mostly expired Qs in them.

I clipped any non-expired Qs but only if they were for items I might use before their time was up.

And I tossed what was left.

On the last day of the month I also make a habit of purging the coupon envelope that I take to the stores when I go grocery shopping so that got gone through on the 31st.

I try to purge the inserts every third month or the things just pile up badly.
It's a good habit to get into, to purge the old paper on a regular basis.

*  Sell Stuff  DONE  I sold 2 items on eBay in March....it wasn't much, but I'll take it!  I need to get things going on the local F/B sale site now that the weather is better.  I have shampoo and diapers to get sold. 8-)

*  Relist House in LA  DONE  The house went back on the market in early March.

*  Sell House in LA  IN PROGRESS  If everything goes as it should we will no longer own this house before April is done. 8-)))))

*  Hold Giveaway  DONE

*  Mail Giveaway  DONE  Marie won the box and I am sure the chocolate is all gone by now. lolz

*  Redo Passwords Book  IN PROGRESS  I did start on this but didn't get too far into the process.  It's just a tedious chore but long overdue.  Cross my fingers I get it completed in April!

*  Do Taxes  DONE  Actually Hubs did most of this.  He's taken over this chore since he's retired now.  He insists that we file electronically as he thinks that filing a paper return now sends up a red flag(as most people file electronically nowadays).  Not that we have anything to fear from an audit but you don't want to stick out like a sore thumb and get smacked with one if you can help it. lolz
Anyway, the taxes are done, filed and we've received a refund from the Feds.  Had to pay local taxes and state taxes in PA AND LA plus the cost of the software and filing fees(UGH)but even after these costs we came out ahead for 2017 $5K and change.  I was shocked it was so much but I'll take it. lolz

*  Plan possible 2018 Travel  IN PROGRESS  Well we went into 2018 wanting to do a couple of trips(big ones)but they involved other people's plans/lives and things haven't worked out to allow us all to travel/see each other at this point.  So we are making alternative plans.  I have been in a funk this Winter and not much wanting to go anywhere far away.  We are working on a trip to the Canadian Maritimes(already been to New Brunswick)but I am still not "feeling it" as they say.  We'll see what we figure out.......

*  Work on 2018 Goals  IN PROGRESS  You would think that by now(a quarter of the way through 2018)we'd have our goals set for the year.
Ummm, no. ;-)
It's still a work in progress.  We've got lots of balls in the air around here.  Selling that LA house, College Boy graduating next month and what is plans are, Daughter still here for another year, where to live in retirement, etc.  We are still at a crossroads of sorts and still figuring stuff out.  Maybe I'll sit down with Hubs this week and narrow down some "life stuff" so I can make some plans or nix other plans.

That's about it for March so let's put that month in the books and forge ahead into April and all the possibilities in store.

What things did you get to in March that were on your To-Do List?

Last Week's Weis Deals I Got

So I hiked up to Weis(PMITA)Markets between snowfalls last week on the ad that ended 4/4.  I got Mix and Match Deals, Freebies after sales/qs and Meats with discount stickers.

The hefty bags were on sale 2/$4 and I had $3 in Qs($1 on a digital Q attached to my card also came off along with my $2 in Qs)so $5 for 4 boxes.

The chicken broth was a Freebie Friday I talked about last Friday Saturday.

The Dixie plates were on sale 2/$4 and I had .75¢/1 Qs that doubled to $1.50 off so .50¢ per package for paper plates.

I used an 8 O'clock Coffee rain check BOGO paired with 2 x $1/1 IPQs so $3.49 for two bags of coffee.

The Annie's mac and cheese was on sale for $1 each and I had 2 x .50¢/1 Qs that doubled to $1 off so those were free.

The Ken's dressing was BOGO(reg. $2.99 bottle)and I had .75¢/1 vinaigrette variety Qs which doubled to $1.50/1.  At Weis you can use a Q on both items on a BOGO sale so I got 10 bottles for free(gave 2 bottles to Eldest son).

The Red Rose tea bags, Kraft mayo and 38 oz. Heinz ketchup were all part of the Mix and Match Deal(Buy 6 items/Get $6 off).  I paired this $6 deal/sale prices with Qs for the tea bags($1/1)and ketchup(BOGO)making the tea bags $1.49 and the ketchup $1.49 for every 2 bottles(or .75¢ per).
The mayo was $1.00 each after sale price and $1 off MandM Deal AND I got $4.25 cash rebate on Ibotta for every 5 on each receipt I bought.
After taking Eldest son a mayo and ketchup(as well as 2 of the dressings)I had 9 mayos and 15 ketchups in the stockpile and we are set for cook-out season and more.  ;-)

The Perdue chicken was 40% off so $6 and I used a $1.50/1 Q so $4.50 for the bag.

Everything else in the photo above was part of the Mix and Match Deal--I used $1.50/1 Qs on the Sandwich Bros. sammiches making those .99¢ each, the frozen veggies were .99¢ per bag after Deal, the Eggplant Parm was $1.99 and the jar of mayo was .15¢ after sale/Deal/Ibotta rebate.

I also found some meat deals......the Sabrett dogs were on sale $4(reg. $6)and had $1/1 Peelie Qs on them so $3 per pack out the door.

The ground turkey was bought during the 3 day sale(which was last Mon-Wed)BOGO(reg. $3 each)so $3 for two packages.  I paired .75¢/1 Qs which doubled to $1.50/1 and used two Qs so FREE ground turkey.
The stew beef each had a $3 off sticker on them so basically half price and the Hatfield sausage was $3.50 each wyb2 plus each had a $2 off sticker on them so $1.50 per package AND I got $1 back on Ibotta(.50¢ per package)so $1 per pack in the end.  I took most of this meat to Eldest son too.

New in our area Chunky Soup Maxx that were on sale for 2/$5.
I had 2 x BOGO Qs and 2 x $1.50/1 Qs to pair with this sale which would have made all 4 tubs cost me $2 or .50¢ each.
Except remember the free ham cashier?.....yeah, I had him that trip so he scanned the BOGO Qs and they deducted $3.39 each which is the regular shelf price so.....
4 x $2.50=$10.00
2 x BOGO $6.78 and 2 x $1.50/1=$9.78 off
$10-$9.78=.22¢ for all 4 tubs of soup.

This wasn't everything I bought during that sale ad, just the best deals.  $125.25 was dropped on groceries over all my trips to Weis last week.

What grocery store do you feel you get the best deals at?

This Week on the Dining Table

The "Happy Birthday Hubs!" Edition--

We spent Hubs birthday evening at a brewery in Fredericksburg playing trivia with eldest son and his GF.  Drinking and mind games seems about right for us as a thing to do on your birthday. 8-)))

Moving On....

Onward to the meal planning!

This is what was planned--

1. Sunday--Ham, Deviled Eggs, Mac and Cheese, Rolls, Cauliflower/Broccoli mix
2. Monday--Hot Dogs, Beans, leftover Deviled Eggs
3. Tuesday--Spaghetti and Meatballs, Salad
4. Wednesday--Fend for Yourself/Easter Leftovers
5. Thursday--Eating-Out(Hubs birthday)
6. Friday--Fend for Yourself/Easter Leftovers
7. Saturday--No Clue Yet

And this is what actually happened--

1. Sunday--Ham, Deviled Eggs, Mac and Cheese, Rolls, Cauliflower/Broccoli mix
2. Monday--Hot Dogs, Beans, leftover Deviled Eggs
3. Tuesday--Fend for Yourself
4. Wednesday--Eating-Out(on trip)
5. Thursday--Eating-Out(Hubs birthday)
6. Friday--Chinese Take-Out
7. Saturday--Steak, Caesar Salad(I got a deal on steaks at Weis that day!)

Last week saw 3 nights of home cooked dinners, 1 night of leftovers/fend for yourself, 1 night of take-out and 2 nights of Eating out since we were out of town visiting our son(plus didn't feel like cooking so got Take-out the nigh we got home).  Too much $ was spent on eating out because our son didn't cook while we were there and our son has expensive tastes!
The spaghetti and balls didn't happen so it moves to this week.

3 trips to Weis for the deals  brought the shopping to $125.25 for the week and brought April's food spending total to $125.25.

My savings percentages last week was 65.09% and April's monthly savings total so far is at 65.09%.

Leftovers going into this week.......ham, mac and cheese, Hawaiian rolls.  The kids didn't eat any of the Easter leftovers left while we were gone.  I gave them a Domino's gift card to get pizza one night and they just pulled something from the freezer the other night.

Here is this week's "food plan".....

1. Sunday--Lasagna
2. Monday--BLTs, Ham or Club Sandwiches
3. Tuesday--Leftover Lasagna, Zucchini side dish
4. Wednesday--Pork Chops, Sweet Potato Fries(baked), Sugar Snap Peas or Green Beans
5. Thursday--Spaghetti and Meatballs, Salad
6. Friday--Fish, Sautéd Squash, Mashed Taters
7. Saturday--Leftovers

This week will see 5 new meals cooked, 2 nights of leftovers/FFY and 0 nights of Take-out/Eat-Out.  We are tamping down on eating out/take-out after last week's blow out....ugh.

What needs buying for this menu?  A head of lettuce, tomatoes, squash, zuke and lasagna noodles.  I went to Dollar Tree and restaurant supply for produce/a log of Cooper cheese on Sunday already(those trips go on this week's shopping)to report next Monday.  So nothing else is needed for this meal plan.

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten last week?

Any great deals on food at your stores this week?

Calling All My Canadian Readers for Travel Advise

While driving home from Virginia Hubs and I did some thinking/talking about where to head this Summer and/or Fall for a trip.

And Canada(Eastern)seemed to be the place that we circled back to.
I've been to Ontario four times and Hubs and I took the kids to New Brunswick one Summer, oh, and there was that spontaneous trip to Campobello Island on a coastal Maine excursion before we had kids.
And my family went to Montreal in 1967 to the Expo '67 shindig.

We'd really like to go to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and maybe even Newfoundland, all provinces we haven't seen yet.

Here's why you, my beloved readers come in with your advise.
When is the best time to go to these places?
What are the "must see" things/places to go?
What are things/places to avoid?
Is the CAT ferry(Portland ME to Yarmouth NS) worth the money and is the St. Johns NB to Digby NS ferry worth the price too(rather than driving the whole way to NS)?
Where are the best places to stay overnight(good but frugal)?
And who wants to meet-up with us?

Either leave a comment on the blog or email me privately.

Now I am off to buy a new FUNCTIONING computer mouse.
Mine lived a good, but brief and hard life.  Well it did get a LOT of use! lolz

Frugal Friday....the Day After, April 7th Edition

A bit late on this due to traveling and computer issues(mouse issues really thankfully)but here goes my Frugal Friday week wrap-up........

*  I paid the real estate taxes early so I got a $ discount on that bill.

*  On Thursday I found money!

A dime on the floor at Hardee's in Fredericksburg.
Of course I picked it up and kept it. ;-)

* Last Friday(Mar 30)I brought home the Weis Freebie on Friday item........

A carton of Chicken Broth(low sodium variety).  The digital coupon actually worked that week!

* I also got back the $1.50 I was overcharged for the previous week's Freebie item, a bag of shredded coconut on that trip.  There were 2 digital coupons attached to my loyalty card for this item and the $1 off one came off, not the one that made it free.

* I paid the sewage bill.  This was frugal in two ways....1-I paid it in full for the year and saved a bit of money doing that and 2-I dropped the payment off at a local bank where the sewage company has their account so saved a stamp/envelope.  These may be small ways to save a bit but it all adds up, doesn't it?

* Hubs' birthday was on Thursday.  Instead of buying him "stuff" I gave him my half of the gift cards our eldest gave us for a Xmas present a couple of years ago to a beer store and a liquor store in Virginia.  While we were visiting our eldest son there for a couple of days this past week Hubs got to go pick out $100 worth of alcoholic beverages he wanted.....and it didn't cost me/him anything. lolz
This meant no "stuff" in the house to contend with/declutter in the future since this was all consumables.

*  I also sold something on eBay last week.
3 tubes of discontinued Nexxus shampoo that cost me nothing.
I sold another thing the week before.............
....a small discontinued Lego set but forgot to include in on that week's Frugal Friday post.  So 2 items out of the house and $29.14 in my pocket after selling fees and what the items cost me to buy.
I also got a lowball offer on some Star Wars lego sets but I'll wait for Xmas time to sell them for full price since they are small and I have room to store them until then. ;-)

*  I also made a few trips to Weis(PMITA)Markets this past week and spent money, including on all this........

I'll write up a post about all my Weis deals later today.  This was just the tip of the iceberg and I don't want this Frugal Friday/Saturday post to be consumed by my Weis adventures. ;-)

So what did you do that was frugal lately?
