Rite-Aid Lately


I bought this on Daughter's card last week in an effort to spend down the Bonus Cash...........

I used.....

Coupon Total....$10.00

$23.58-$10.00=$13.58 paid for w/ BC and gift card.

I earned $8 in new BC($1 Crest, $7 wyb $20 select food items).
The toothpaste was free after Q and BC.

I had also returned some things Saturday and should have had $8.24 more on the card but for some reason by Monday when I checked those BC hadn't shown up so I had to contact CS. sigh.


The CS person checked and for some reason the BC didn't get applied but I gave her the transaction info. to prove I returned the items so she credited me with $9 in BC and it's now on the account.

On Monday I bought this on Daughter's card........

1 x Oral-B toothbrush=$4.00
2 x R/S Halloween candy=$1.00
SubTotal......$9.00

I used 1 x $1/1 Scope L2CQ and 1 x $1/1 Oral-B L2CQ so $2 off making this $7.00 paid for with BC.

I earned $7 back in new BC($3 Scope, $3 Oral-B, $1 R/S).

Then I bought this on my card...........



1 x Oral-B toothbrush=$4.00
I used a $1/1 Oral-B L2CQ and paid $3.00 OOP in BC.

This earned me $3 back in new BC.

I have $1.77 expiring in 2 days on this card so I'll go back and buy a tube of toothpaste soon on this card.  Any BC left on this card after this week will go toward paying for my next Rx refill and I'll be down to 2 cards with BC on them.

This Week on the Dining Table

The "I Can't Keep Up!" Edition................



Here is the latest large colander of tomatoes Hubs picked on Sunday.  He had just picked another bowl worth on Friday.  I am drowning in tomatoes!  That's always how it is with tomatoes(and zucchini).....you either have almost none or you have bowls of them all at once.  8-)))

Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be ready to process it all in the water bath canner.  I've been throwing bags of tomatoes into the freezer(easier to de-skin them that way)and have almost a full stock pot of mater pulp now.  The jars are out and ready and canning will happen soon now! ;-)

Moving On....

7. Saturday--Steak, Salad, Corn Casserole

And this is what actually happened--

1. Sunday--Chinese Take-Out

7. Saturday--Breakfast for Dinner(I had eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns)


Last week saw 5 nights of home cooked dinners, 0 nights of leftovers/ffy, and 2 night of Eating Out/Take-Out.
Everything happened except the steak but it didn't necessarily happen on the night it was planned.  Meals were changed up according to Ex-CB schedule, weather or me being too tired or not inclined to cook a particular entree on a particular night.

What got put into the freezer last week.....
* 3.31 lbs. corned beef brisket
* 1 pack sausage w/peppers and onions

What got taken out of the freezer and used last week.....
* 1 bag cooked chicken breast
* 1/4 of a bag of chicken tenders
* 2 packs Kielbasi
* 3 packs of shrimp

Two trips to Weis($34.14),a trip to Shurfine Market($16.42), a run to the Bread Outlet($10.00)and a forgotten trip earlier in the month to Ollie's($5.17) brought the weekly spending to $65.73 and my August Grand Total spending on food to $304.16.


My savings percentage last week was 60.65%(without Rite-Aid trips)and August's monthly savings total comes in at 52.16%(w/out R-A). 

Onward and upward to September!I have 28 more food shopping/spending days in September.  The budget is $400 but we always hope to do a little better than that amount. ;-)

Leftovers going into this week......Corn from 2 Corn on Cob, Shrimp Scampi, Linguine, Harvard Beets, Peppers and Onions, Kielbasi, 1 Pancake, 1 Sausage Patty and 1 strip of Bacon, a helping of Hash Browns, and a helping of Broccoli in Cheese Sauce, which I'll turn into Broccoli Cheese Soup. The leftover corn went into Sunday evening's corn casserole.

Here is this week's "food plan".....
1. Sunday--Steak, Corn Casserole, Garlic Mashed Taters
2. Monday--Haddock, French Fries, Cole Slaw
3. Tuesday--Leftovers(Probably Beets and Scampi + Tomatoes)
4. Wednesday--Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches, Squash and Onions
5. Thursday--Pizza, Salad
6. Friday--Pork Chops, Glazed Carrots, Rice(Hubs is cooking this.)
7. Saturday--?

This week will see 5 new meals cooked, 1 night of leftovers/FFY, and 1 night of ?.

What needs buying for this menu? Cabbage, Yellow Squash.  Lobsters are on sale this week so that might happen instead of something if I feel up to going to that store. ;-)

Income & Spending Report 2019..........the August Edition

Now that we are living on an annuity and 401K$ withdrawals, I am still going to keep track of our monthly spending and income, and hopefully we'll still be able to live BELOW our means and I'll have some leftover monies each month to tuck aside.

Two changes we implemented for 2019 at our financial meeting in Jan.--

* Hubs wants to take $150 per person WAM(aka Walking Around Money)in 2019.  I found last year's $100 per month adequate but Hubs chafed at that little so we are upping it this year to $150 per person per month.
                                                                                                                                               
*As for our 2018 Slush Fund, this is how we are going to handle it in 2019......
We won't be taking a quarterly 401K withdrawal in 2019 until we "need" to, instead of taking one each quarter as we had planned back in 2017 when Hubs retired.  Why pull 401K monies out when they are earning more than our other regular bank funds?  Use those instead for now!

Since the Slush Fund ended 2018 with $23,164.17 in it and the Sinking Fund ended 2018 with $468.37 in it, we are, for now at least, not taking any more 401K withdrawals and using what is in the Sinking Fund and/or Slush Fund to cover all irregular bills that come up in 2019 plus a few projects around the house.

  I am trying to be as transparent as I can with how much is coming in and how much is going out.  8-)


On to the August report---

I had 2 goals for August......
The 1st is to actually finish the month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to try to have a little cash leftover at the end of the previous month to tuck back into a slush fund.  This slush fun may be to apply toward unforeseen bills that are coming due in subsequent months, to spend on "extras/wants" during the year or to just sit there and grow until the end of 2019.

I can report that we finished up August in the black.
The amount we ended the month of August with?.....$286.13

Income or Funds We Can Access

The "income" in August---

* Monthly annuity payment of $3222.24(after tax withholding)
* RMSA(Healthcare account)reimbursement of $1848.67
* Interest earned on non-retirement accounts of $601.16
Total "Income" for August.....$5672.07

Expenses in August---

* Healthcare Premium for August was $1,848.67(paid for with RMSA reimbursement)
* Variable Expenses in August came to $3537.27
Total Expenses....$5,385.94

$5672.07-$5,385.94=$286.13

Slush into August $19,971.81+ $286.13=$20,257.94

We also had more expenses we planned to be paid out of the Slush Fund instead of regular "income" in August--the carpet and installation in the second bedroom(aka the Hubs' room), a chunk of $$ Hubs' wanted to spend on "his fun" and a large ER bill. The carpeting was one of the big expenses/improvements we are paying for in 2019 from Slush Fund monies but the other two expenses we decided to take from the Slush Fund too.  These three bills cost $2,259.29 out of the Slush Fund.


Outgo
As for the variable expenses this August, here are the good and the bad side of things....

HERE are the GOOD THINGS

*  Phone charges and internet were approximately the same as last month.(Within $2 or so).
*  The electric bill was .23¢ lower than last month.
*  The c/c bill was $1,314.67 lower than in July.
*  The WAM was the same as in July.
*  The health insurance premium was the same as last month.
*  The Chase/Amazon c/c was $112.08 lower than July's bill.


HERE are the BAD THINGS

*  The water bill was $17.20 higher than last month.
*  The gas card bill was $20.67 more than in July.
*  Had a $44.98 on store card paid for new "drawers".
*  Annual House Insurance was paid this month out of reg. income.


The Food Budget costs for August are in another post, which is located HERE.  Food costs are included in the credit card payment(mainly but sometimes our WAM cash too).

So we end August "income" in the black with $286.13.

Then we deducted $524.37 for the carpeting, $749.45 for the ER bill and $985.47 for Hubs' "fun" purchases equaling $2,259.29 from the Slush Fund.

We added $286.13 to the Slush from August income overage and then deducted $2,259.29 from the Slush which leaves the August Slush Fund ending at $17,998.65 going into September.

The Sinking Fund goes into September 2019 standing at $468.37 since nothing was paid out of it in July.

FINAL THOUGHTS on August----

Though we had a couple hundred bucks in income overage last month, we also had three large of "out of the ordinary" expenses in August(1 planned, 2 not).
Luckily we could tap the Slush Fund for those expenses as $286.13 overage in income didn't go far to cover that $2,259.29 in expenses.  ;-)


THOUGHTS going forward into September 2019----

We have 2 irregular bills due this month; long term care and the annual school tax(which is a property tax).  Both of these will be drawn from the Slush Fund as planned.

Electric will be lower due to less a/c usage and not needing heat yet.

The credit card bill will be higher again in Sept.....besides the usual stuff we put on the card(and pay off each month), we bought a new mattress, adjustable base for it, and a twin mattress for the daybed in Hubs' room.  I shopped around, got free shipping and used a discount code but this still comes in at $1108.23 total and will be on the September c/c billing cycle.  Might be able to fully cover this on regular "income", might not.  It all depends on how the monthly bills play out in September(and if Hubs goes rogue again spending money for his fun lol).

But no worries here on going over the "income".  We have almost $18K in overage left from last year when we were withdrawing from the 401K so we just use that overage to absorb extra costs until that is gone and then we'll sit down and re-evaluate the spending, probably at the end of 2019 if any monies are left in the Slush Fund by then.

Here are my FOOD BUDGET spending totals for AUGUST 2019.

I have posted August's totals on the Total Grocery Savings Page located HERE and have updated the Totals there.
I am listing subtotals for each store I purchased from in August.  If you aren't interested in that much detail, just skip to the bottom for the Totals Sum.  My spending includes Food, Toiletries/HBA, Cleaning Products, Paper Goods & tax where applicable. We are a family of 5(3 at home this month). No "kids" under 23.

My best 3 Store Savings Totals were Rite-Aid at 100%, the Bread Outlet at 72.81% and Malacari's at 52.09%.  My worst savings rate was at Ocean State Job Lot with 42.45%.  Having a worst rate of over 40% is still awesome. 8-)))

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....
We spent well UNDER my $400 budgeted amount for food/toiletries in August(almost $100 less!).  I put fewer things into the freezer in August and I spent less money.

The monthly food spending savings percentage went UP by 4.11% in August 2019 to 68.56% compared to the July 64.45% savings average.



With 8 months accounted for, I have spent a Year-To-Date Total of $3,051.44 on food/toiletries in 2018.


2019 Yearly Total Spent To Date....................$3,051.44
2019 Yearly Total Value of Items To Date....$12,136.40
2019 Total Saved To Date...............................$9,084.96
2019 Yearly Savings Total To Date of............74.86%

The average per month amount spent so far is $381.43 in 2019 which went down $11.04+ per month due to less spending in August.
The yearly rate went down .54% from July's percentage for the year-to-date mainly due to "buying" less items at Rite-Aid in August compared to July's haul.
May was a lower than usual savings percentage and it's been slowly rising every month since that.

LOOKING AHEAD To September 2019.......
No trips, no company coming so a usual food/cooking month.  I have a $15 prepaid debit card earned at R-A but I'll put it toward food spending in September.
I might venture into Target at some point in September which will mean lower OOP spending on food as I'll use discounted gift cards.

Frugal Friday.....the August 30th Edition

Let's take a peek into Sluggy's World and see what frugal things happened this past week--

* Weis gas points were expiring so I filled up my car's gas tank plus Hubs' gas can for the lawnmower..........



$2.94 saved.  Not earth shattering but it all adds up, right?

* I earned $7 at Rite-Aid and .25¢ at Weis from Ibotta since last Friday.  I bought a corned beef at Weis put got credited the .25¢ rebate for ground beef? lolz  I guess they are both beef so what the heck!

* I received a coupon in the mail...........


A free dog treat?  Chester and Dixie say, "Yes, please!".

*  We had an Anniversary meal out on Wednesday at Outback.  I didn't have any Qs or a gift card to use but I got the Walkabout Wednesday Deal....a 6 oz. sirloin with fries and a drink for $10.99.  Hubs' 9 oz. steak, baked potato, salad and iced tea cost DOUBLE what my meal cost! Geez

*  I found money!


Another dime at Rite-Aid last Friday under the cane display in the pharmacy area.


And a dime in Weis(PMITA)Markets near the battery display on Wednesday.
August must be the "Month of Dropped Dimes" because this is my third dime I've found this month....lolz

*  I got some deals..........

Green chiles for .75¢ a can.


And free candy bars at Weis.

*  I picked more produce out of the garden...........


All these tomatoes plus 1 cucumber weighed in at 9.71 lbs.
I also picked 26.6 ounces of broccoli that I didn't get a photo of before I cooked and we ate it on Tuesday. ;-)
