Stupid Crap People Really Buy!....Episode #1

Just in time for the 2012 Holiday Shopping Season, it's a new Feature here at Chez Sluggy I like to call--

"Stupid Crap People Really Buy"

Today's Selection comes to us directly from the Sunday Coupon Inserts.  The Inserts on Sunday we get here aren't filled with lovely lovely high value coupons....no.  Instead they are filled with lovely lovely offers of fine quality merchandise that no store would deem to carry.
This particular item caught my eye recently......

It's the beautimous ELVIS FASHION BAG!
This beauty is available exclusively from the Bradford Exchange.
You know, that clearinghouse of all things "collectible".
Yes, this Elvis bag is a collectible that you can actually use to function as a purse...what a concept!

Stand in awe of it's custom designed golden faux leather featuring silhouettes of Elvis, his replica signature, the braided faux leather handle with metal rings attaching it to the bag, and a key fob with the TCB(or Taking Care of Business) charm.  Strong demand is expected so hurry and order NOW!

Now do you want to know the kind of customer I see walking around in life with this purse on their shoulder?

And this fine vinyl, er.....faux leather purse will run Miss "Kiss my Grits" Flo $100 in 4 easy payments(plus shipping of $10.99).
What a bargain!!!
Even if she has to tighten her Aqua net and chewing gum budget for awhile and stop throwing wild Canasta parties at the trailer park until this is paid off.

Yes, Style may be "Golden" like the ad states, but this purse is neither stylish nor golden.

Here's a thought--If you really must have an Elvis bag why not go down to one of "The Marts" and buy a plain bag, then buy some Elvis stickers and some fabric paint(though vinyl isn't really fabric, is it?) and create your own decorated bag.  This way, you save yourself a shit ton of money by not paying the extortionist price for a licensed Elvis product(which the lion's share goes to a division of JP Morgan Chase-which owns the rights to the Elvis name).  You save your money and I bet you'll have a much more tasteful and unique bag in the end.

It's just a cheap made in China bag anyway, just like all the other "faux leather" bags in the stores.  These probably cost $1.50 to produce and even with the print advertising it didn't cost anywhere near $100 to get to market.  What makes it cost $100 is the licensing and the horrendous markup charged by the owner of the bag company.
Yes, Sluggy has been watching SHARK TANK lately.....lol

And if you still have another $60 laying around to throw away, you can also buy the Elvis Performance Ballet Flats Shoes to complete your ensemble.

So I ask.....I know they must sell oodles of these......
But Who buys this crap?!?!
Anybody you know?
And what kind of need is filled in anyone with this stupid crap?
Or do people who buy stupid stuff just keep buying more and more until they end up on "Hoarders"?

Vacation & Savings By The Numbers....How I Paid for It

Speaking of money......aren't I always?lol......
I finished doing the accounting on the cost of our Vacation to Ocean City.
For you math nerd/listmakers, here is how it breaks down--

Hotel Room 5 nights oceanfront....$411.03
Pet Boarding 2 dogs.....$174.00
Restaurant dotcom certificates....$16.00
Movie and Museum(including books)....$28.75
Gas.....$102.77
Tolls....$18.00
Sundries.....$15.90
Food Out and Drinks/Liquor Purchases....$278.29
Tips 7 Restaurants....$59.00

TOTAL....$1,103.74

How I did this trip more frugally?

*Going in the "Low" Season to the Ocean means much lower room rates.
Do you know what our room booked for last Summer?
$339 a night.

Going in October?
$89 a night weekday/$109 a night weekend(Sunday night is considered weekend).
Then you add the state taxes and the room charges equaling approx. 10% of your room cost onto that base number.
I brought the cost of the room down more.  Since I am on this hotel's mailing list I had a Rate Book from them that noted if I booked via telephone instead of online, I would get a 20% reduction in my room rates....20% off the discounted off-season rates.
This means I saved $100+ more on the room charges.

*I could have skipped on the pet boarding since 2 of the kids were home.  But with their schedules it would have meant making the dogs either "hold it" for too long stretches during the day and having their feeding schedules disrupted.  We have no pet sitting options here(we tried that last year with bad results)so it was money we had to spend in good conscience.
Not frugal but the best way for us.

*We didn't do much that cost money for activities.  1 movie, 1 museum, a few cheap books.  Besides eating and drinking we concentrated on the free stuff...... walking the boardwalk, people & ocean  watching from the balcony, plus a little tv.  We don't see the reason for "doing things" that don't take advantage of where you are and what makes that place special.  Beaches are for hanging out by and enjoying nature, not spending your whole vacation in the mall or an activity you can do anywhere.

*Gas and Tolls are what they are.  Toll roads could have been avoided mostly but it would have taken us more time and more gas to get to and from where we went.

*The only non-food type item we bought was a pair of clip-on sunglasses for Hubs.  They cost more than I wanted to spend but at least they are good quality and not a "cheapie" pair so Hubs should get a few years of use out of them, so frugal if they last.
No junky souvenirs were bought.

*Food and Drink was a mix of eating in(groceries), eating cheap and moderate restaurant meals.  I didn't figure in the cost of the groceries we bought and consumed on vacation since those are counted under our Food Budget for the month.  17 meals were eaten--3 breakfasts and 1 dinner at the room and 13 meals(plus 2 snacks) out or on the way to or from on the road.
Between not eating every meal out and using some Restaurant certs. to try new places we had a successful eating experience on this vacation.  We didn't plan on skimping on meals out since it was vacation and that is what we decided to spend on, not souvenirs or activities.

*Having been a waitress in one of my previous lives, I make tipping in establishments that require it a priority.  Seriously, if you can't afford to tip the help, then you can't afford to eat out and you should stay home or go visit Ronald's or The King's Place.
I had an online friend who refused to tip when we ate out together.  It pissed me off so badly that I stopped going places with him.  He'd get all up into his psuedo-European attitude that we shouldn't have to tip an employee.  Well, until the whole restaurant business model changes in this country, you are required to tip that waitperson Mr. Jerk Face!  And you are NOT in Europe and you are NOT European so get off that popsicle stick stuck up your ass and deal with it.
Deep cleansing breath.......

Yeah, I get a little prickly about the dining public that stiffs their wait staff.  I tip well.....no apologies.

$1,103.74 for 2 people for 5 nights is how it all shakes out in the end. That's $110.37 per person per day inclusive.  Our room slept 4 so we could have reduced the cost maybe(though food/eating would have increased)if we had brought the kids, but then again, our "enjoyment factor" for the trip would have fallen with 2 sullen teens along. Just putting up with all that eye rolling from them would have necessitated more adult beverage purchases which would have negated any frugality.  lol

So the question now is..... where do we find the $1,103.74 to cover the cost of this vacation......much of which was put on our credit card?
That's easy.
We will take $1,103.74 from the money we saved last year in my Savings Challenge in 2011.
We saved $34,461.31 in 2011.

As is my routine, any expenses in the following year that aren't earmarked to be paid for with current year income, we pay for from the money we saved in the preceding year.  Expenses paid for in this fashion are not the normal bills, either monthly bills or irregular bills that are planned for and expected each year.

They are the emergencies like "the car motor needs an overhaul", the fridge can't be repaired so we're buying a new one" or  the "wouldn't it be nice to have X because we are frugal and have the extra money for it" expenses.  I guess you would call my savings challenge pile of money our emergency fund for the following year.
Having saved $34,461.31 in 2011 meant we had an emergency fund of $34,461.31 for 2012.

So far in 2012 we have spent $1,523.42 of the 2011 Savings.
--$600 was used toward the Ohio trip in June of 2012.
--$923.42 was used toward the purchase of the 3rd car for the children's use n August 2012.  That car was paid for with the insurance check from the driver who totaled our last 3rd car in May of 2011 and a small inheritance check.  The $923.42 was the difference between those 2 funds and the price of the car.

With the addition of the Beach Vacation expenses we have now spent down $2,627.16 of the 2011 Savings Challenge monies.

Even though 2012 is not over yet, I am going to close out the books on the 2011 Savings amount now.
Since we are only $400+ short from the savings goal for the 2012 Savings Challenge with 2 months to save that amount AND we have an extra paycheck in November, even if we run high on expenses for the last 2 months of the year, I don't foresee having to dip into the 2011 Savings monies again this year to cover any overages in our expenses.
So I can close out the books on the 2011 savings/2012 emergency fund monies and report that we ended up hanging onto $31,834.15 of the monies we saved in the 2011 Savings Challenge.  This amount can now be invested since we won't tap into it again until we retire.

Once 2012 is over, the money in that Savings Challenge fund becomes the new Emergency Fund for 2013, and I will continue to save in 2013 and put that money into a new Savings fund to tap into for 2014.

It's just a never ending circle of frugality and savings.  I try to stay 1 year and 1 emergency fund ahead of the expenses. 8-)
It's sort of like putting money away as soon as you pay off a car, to purchase your next car so you never have to finance a car again.
I put money away for future emergencies so that I never have to finance anything in my life again!

How do you save for vacations and those nice little things in life?  Do you plan ahead?  Do you put money specifically into a fund for fun?  Or do you fund a general emergency/expenses account?

Food Spending NOVEMBER Week 1, Meal Planning NOVEMBER Week 2

This has nothing to do with Meal Planning.  I just thought it was funny. 8-)

***********************************

And here is what actually got served last week....

Sunday--Steak on grill, Salad, Roasted Potatoes & Onions
Monday--Reuben Sandwiches
Tuesday--Grilled Pork Chops, Green Beans, Cinnamon Apples
Wednesday--Kielbasi on Rolls, Onions and leftover Sauerkraut, Corn
Thursday--Chinese Take-out
Friday-- Ravioli with Sauce, Spinach Salad
Saturday--Leftovers
The food spending last week was $96.30 for $157.04 reg. retail worth of goods.  I also earned $20 in food Catalinas to spend in the coming 2 weeks so I should have little or ZERO OOP food expenses from now until Thanksgiving day.

***********************
Going into this week, I have leftover corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut from the Reubens, and 1 large helping of Raviolis and Sauce.  I'll either have sandwiches for lunch or freeze the corned beef for later use.  I'll have the ravioli dish for one of my lunches.  Moving the 1 meal we didn't have last week to this week's menu and the big side dish of Halushki as well.

This week's menu....
Sunday--Halushki with Bacon
Monday--Chicken Pot Pie
Tuesday--Lasagna
Wednesday-Honey Mustard Chicken, Rice, Broccoli
Thursday--Chili, Cornbread
Friday--Tuna Casserole, Beets
Saturday--Leftovers

On Wednesday it's possible we'll have leftovers as well instead of the Honey Mustard Chicken.  There is leftover Halushki from Sunday, there should be leftover Pot Pie tonight and there will be leftover Lasagna on Tuesday, so the second chicken dish may not be needed this week.
What do I need to buy to serve this menu?  The local market had their semi-annual meat sale last week, so I picked up a huge pork loin(to cut into chops)and 2 large pkgs. of chicken breasts.  I've got 2 chicken dishes on deck for this week(or note) to use some of what I bought.  Chili will use some of the beef cubes in the freezer that are aging and the ricotta was bought last week to make the Lasagna this week.
Left to buy this week?.....maybe some romaine lettuce for a Caesar Salad to have with the Lasagna.
Add in some fruit and milk and we are done.
So what are you cooking at your house this week?

Lest We Forget

Never forget that many that have gone before you have given of themselves to keep you free.
Many have given their all doing their duty.
And many who didn't have their all taken from them, were changed irreparably nonetheless.

Take a moment today, on this Veteran's Day to remember the great cost at which your freedom was won and is protected to this day.

Thank the veterans in your family tree, both living and dead.

Here, we'll be celebrating men like.....

Robert Foster, Ensign Army, Revolutionary War

Joseph James Hamilton, Private Army Reserve Corp., C.S.A., died as a POW

Raymond Maxwell Harper,  Private Army, World War II

Frank Bowman, Sgt. Army Corp of Engineers, World War II

Steve Arcure, Private Army Air Corp, World War II

and Anthony Arcure, Navy, Vietnam War (no photo)

Except for the last name above, our veterans are all gone now.

War is terrible.  Ask anyone who has had to fight.
We should not enter lightly into wars of an offensive nature.
A strong defense is however a different matter.

While we don't have troops fighting in Iraq any longer we need to bring the troops home from Afghanistan as well.

Show some appreciation to those veterans in your life who are still with us.
And donate to the WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT to help our Military Heroes who need a hand transitioning back to civilian life.
They gave themselves to keep you safe.
What can you do to keep them well.

Food Spending Limit Until Thanksgiving...Can I Do It?

If you come here often, you know I operate on a Food Budget of $400 per month.  That amount includes pet foods and all toiletries and paper products too.
Well, most months that is what I strive for but we seem to have spent more than $400 on food in 4 out of the last 10 months. 8-(

For our family(size, habits, etc.)and income I think $400 is a good amount.  It's not so low that the only foods we can afford are highly processed and/or nutritionally questionable....though we do buy some processed and questionable foods on occasion.  I know others spend less on food but given the prices in my area and the dearth of competition between stores which keeps prices lower, this is about as far down in the budget I care to go on this expense.
Of course, should something in our lives change(job loss/income disruption/kids moving out//DEFLATION of prices...hahaha, had to throw that one in for a laugh since prices NEVER go down!), I would be re-evaluating the budget in a heartbeat.

As for November's Food Budget.....
I have just completed buying groceries at the local Shursave grocery to earn a food certificate for free food at their store in the next 12 days before Thanksgiving.
DID I JUST SAY THERE ARE ONLY 12 DAYS LEFT BEFORE THANKSGIVING???
Anyway, I have spent so far in November on groceries a total of $202.54 of my $400.  Along with the weekly items I needed to make the meals served, I have picked up loss leaders and meat & frozen veggie deals along the way this month to use on down the road.  And I earned $20 in free food certs for buying things now(or last week)that I would have bought anyway at the end of the month.  I have also been picking up Thanksgiving meal items as they have gone on sale.  I got a turkey earlier this week so I am set for most of what I need to throw the Thanksgiving meal together.
The only items left to buy are Celery, a small bag of Potatoes, a couple of Rutabagas and Parsnips.

I have between $35 and $40 in free food catalinas, certificates and gift cards to use.
I have $20 to spend at the Shursave Grocer and between $15 and $20 at Weis(PMITA)Markets.
(I have a $5 Weis Cat to use by 11/15, and 2 gift cards--1 is for $5 but I can't remember if the other one is also for $5 or $10.)
8-)

I am going to try to use these chits to cover our food expenses up to and including those 4 Thanksgiving meal items.  $35-$40 should cover anything I need to buy until the 22nd.
All meals the next 11 days will be from foods I already have here or we can use one of the pizza coupons I won at the Church Auction last month if we feel like eating take-out during that time frame.

I'm all excited now to see what kind of meals I come up with so I only use that $35 in chits and don't have to buy any food until after Thanksgiving.

Do you think I can do it?
Do you have enough food laid back that you could do this?
