Frugal Friday....the November 26th Edition

Here's what we had happen in the frugal vein around here this past week.....

*  I sold 2 items on eBay!  A set of Wizard of Oz themed playing cards in a tin and 6 tubes of discontinued Nexxus shampoo.

*  I've been pillaging Rite-Aid for the Black Friday sale.  I'll give a total in a few days for it all.  I will say it's not been a stellar BF this year at R-A.  Every store I've gone to has been out of Conair hairbrushes and the big Russell Stover bags of chocolate and most never got any of these items.

*  I got an unexpected giftie from a reader!

An Amazon package arrived last Friday.  I got a set of cat butt fridge magnets to go with my dog butt ones!

*  I returned some items to R-A early in the week and received a cash refund on 4 items and BC back on the 5th item.

*  I found money!

A penny I don't remember where in R-A since it was last weekend.

This nickel was found on Wednesday near the Higi machine in the pharmacy area.

And a penny next to my car in the parking lot at Rite-Aid.

Found This Week... .07¢
Found This Year.....$20.10

*  I hit up CVS last weekend.  I had a free beauty item Q($5 or less)on my card so I got this.

It was $4.99 so nothing out of pocket after that Q.
And then I earned this free ECB for buying it......

That's about it this week.

What frugal wins did you have last week?

Let us know!

Black Friday Time Again

Just had to reshare this again this year.
It's one of my favs.....

The only shopping I'm doing is Rite-Aid(of course)and Hubs went to Office Max this afternoon to pick up a couple computer mice.
We also went to Weis(PMITA)Markets for a few things and just got back.

Other than that I won't be going anywhere until Monday morning.

My shopping has been done for weeks now.
I just need 1 thing for Hubs to pick up(no hurry/no sale)and then write a couple of checks.

I wish you luck if you went/have to go out into that shopping madness fray.
Stay safe!

I'll be back later this weekend with a new Giveaway instead of posting it today like I had planned.
Contrary to popular believe I DO have a life outside of the computer. lolz

Tuesdays Trip to Rite-Aid to Roll +Up Rewards

Nothing too exciting here this trip.......

2 x Rite-Aid Tools on sale $1 ea.=$2.00
2 x Colgate toothbrushes on sale $2.99=$5.98
1 x Cella cherry 20% disc.=$.26
Subtotal.....$8.24

I used 1 x $1/2 Colgate toothbrushes ManuQ.

$8.24-$1.00=$7.24
I used $7 +Up Rewards, leaving me paying $.24 +$.02 tax=$.26 OOP.

I received $6 in +Ups back for this transaction(2 x $2 Colgate, 2 x $1 R-A).
Add those to the $1 in +Ups I didn't use on Tuesday and I now have $7 in +Ups to roll.

I got the last 2 toothbrushes at this store after finding Zero toothbrushes at the store on the way home from my dr. appt.
The only reason there are Beauty Tools that are free after +Ups is because this store had no signage up for them....but that didn't stop me from finding them and figuring out which ones qualified as a freebie........lolz

Then it's standing down until Black Friday hits at Rite-Aid.  One of the managers I was chatting with today told me their store is being required to stay open that day until midnight.
I have been in this store scads of times over the years, both during the Holidays and Not-Holidays and we both know the place will be deserted by 9pm.  I promised her I'd come by that evening to keep her company(and get some photos copied for my Great Aunt for something to do).

Later today I'll go up for 2 x Colgate toothpaste which will be free after 1 ManuQ and +Ups(spent and received).

Rolling the +Up Rewards on Monday & Black Friday Mania...Not!

Here's how I rolled my $8 in +Ups on Monday.....

1 x Pudding on sale=$1.00
2 x Wyler's drink powder on sale $1 but 20% discount made them .80¢=$1.60
2 x Nail Polish on sale $2.50 but 20% discount made them $2.39=$4.78
2 x Chocolates 20% discount made them .40¢=$.80
SubTotal.....$8.18

I used my $8 +Ups....
$8.18-$8.00=$.18 OOP

I received $8 in +Ups back($5 nail polish & $1 each for 3 food items).

I went in planning on doing the Blue Diamond Almonds x 2($4.00)and the Beef Jerky x 2($4.00)for stocking fillers, but they were out of all the food items that are free after +Ups except for the Wyler's drinks mixes and the Pudding.  I've maxed out on the limit of the pudding/ravioli, drink mixes and this particular brand of nail polish deals.

So I got rain checks and will hope the nuts and jerky come back into stock before Dec. 15th(when I need to mail a package).  And they were out of the oatmeal cups too so I'll get a rain check on that as well.

The only thing left of the $30.99 of freebies after +Ups I want is a body spray/parfume for $3.00.
I'll probably do that and the toothbrushes or toothpaste later today(thought the brushes won't be free but almost)when I go out for a dr. appt. and then I am done at Rite-Aid until the Black Friday sales hit and I can get more free or real cheap toiletries.

I don't go out to "real stores" on BF or that whole weekend usually because the only things they have deep sales on are things I don't want/can't use.

BF as far as I can see from perusing the ads is all about televisions, electronics, smart phones, appliances, overpriced jewelry, pajamas and kid's clothing, movies & cds, holiday food "gifts" or junk food and of course TOYS and whatever the HOT "must have" gizmo of the year/season is(which is usually an electronic gizmo or game system).

I no longer have young kids.....I HAVE a tv, have a "dumb" phone, appliances & jewelry.
Don't want most of what they are hawking or need ANY of those things enough to get up before dawn & fight crowds.

I will confess that I did venture into KMart about 10 years ago, the first time they opened ON Thanksgiving for a few hours to get my youngest some handheld game system thingy.  That was a year they were hard to find(sold out everywhere)and it was his main desire, so after I got the turkey in the oven I went down to KMart and bought it for him and headed straight home.  No browsing around to look at all the rest of the shiny baubles, I was on a mission. lol

The only other time we did the BF shopping thing was as a family when all the kids were younger and still living at home.  Hubs had BF day off from work(VERY rare!)so we picked up the nephew and took the kids out shopping as a family at the outrageously early hour of 10am. lolz
No crowds and no hassles as all the crazy shoppers had left the building and were home napping.
We leisurely meandered around stores looking for a few items and the kids did their Christmas shopping for family and friends.
Then we went to Bob Evans for a late lunch together and headed home.
Yes, we are a zany, crazy family....what can I say??

After the Mad Holiday Shopping Frenzy is over with, what I do want to buy is this.....

But that desire can wait until next week and maybe they will go on sale too. 8-)

Commercialism and Consumerism and National Holidays

There is quite the discussion and consternation going on lately about the whole opening of stores on Thanksgiving and the wee hours of the morning Black Friday madness.

Looking at it from a business owner's POV, HERE is a valid reason why some stores NEED to open on one of the sacred cows of Holidays, Thanksgiving.

I'm not going to get into a debate with anyone over if stores opening Turkey day or in the wee hours of the morning of the Friday following it is a good thing or bad.  It all depends on your own situation I guess......

* If you are a business owner, it's one extra day to make sales during the Holiday season, so your company has the potential for a bigger profit.
*  If you are a consumer you get another chance to get a great deal on more crap to fill your home or get into a fist fight over a toaster.
*  If you are a worker in the retail industry then you get the burden of having to work at a "holiday".....just like nearly ALL food service employees & hospital employees have had to do for many years on that day.  Working on Holidays is a well-known hazard of certain occupations so either find another line of work or, how can I say this in a nice way?.....STFU. 8-)
I have worked both food service and retail in my younger days.  Was it a PITA working Holidays?  You bet!  Did I bitch about it non-stop?  No and I was glad to have those jobs.

I think that this whole contentious issue will be moot in a couple more years anyway.
Now that the "Stores not open on Turkey Day/Black Friday foolishness" line has been breeched, there is nothing keeping stores from starting Black Friday sales/promotions on the Tuesday before the holiday or even earlier in the month.

My feeling is, as a consumer, if you want to participate in this shopping craziness, knock yourself out!  And as an employee, if you don't want to have to work at this time of year, don't get yourself hired into the retail business.

Personally I have conflicted feelings about the whole celebration of Thanksgiving anyway.

I DO like that we have a national holiday that doesn't revolve around a religious event/theme.  There are many great people out in our society who are not religious, or not a follower of a Judeo-Christian sect.
It's nice to have a day set aside that we can be Americans together and not exclude anyone due to a belief system.

But then again, this whole Pilgrim/Plymouth Rock thing everyone "thinks" this event stems from is a myth.
It is a fact that the "not driven by religious persecution" immigrants to America who came to Jamestown in 1607 were the FIRST to celebrate an ersatz Thanksgiving, and they did it BEFORE the Pilgrims even landed at Plymouth Rock.
Add in that the first Europeans on the continent were the Spanish in Florida and they have a good case for being first too.

At any rate, the native peoples who were here FIRST have always seen Thanksgiving as a day of mourning.  The Europeans arriving on their shores signaled the beginning of the end for their way of life and their culture.

Maybe we should start fresh with a new national day of peace and thanksgiving and not premise it on cultural genocide and exclusion and not celebrate it with overconsumption of both material possessions and food.

The Darkest Day of the Year is Here!

*It's 3 am and I am headed to bed after staying up too too late to pack up things that sold on eBay and need to ship out today.  Don't make too much noise and wake me as y'all head out the door to shop, if you are so inclined.
Here's a repeat of my teeny rant last year on Black Friday.
The clip at the end is funny yet too close to the truth sometimes to be hilarious.
Enjoy!

***************************

Will you be out with the Shopping Fanatics on Friday morning?
Or will you be snug in your bed or headed to work at that early hour?
Me?....I don't 'do' Black Friday.

Besides the fact that I don't have many people to buy "stuff" for during the Holidays, it's rare that I want/need something so badly at an insanely low price that I'd brave the traffic headaches, go out into the Chaos of Crowds and stand in lines a mile long to pay in order to save money on an electronic/appliance/toy/article of clothing/etc.
But that's just me I suppose....
Hey, I am all over a great deal but even I have my limits.

If you do have the "Shopping Monkey on your back" and you'll be hitting as many stores as time will allow in a Shopping Bachanalia, remember that all that "stuff" you buy needs to fit into your already crowded with "stuff" home and once you are done with the new "stuff", it will most likely end up clogging up a landfill somewhere....and we are fast running out of places to dispose of all our unwanted "stuff" on this planet.  Consider these points and buy judiciously if you have to purchase "stuff".

The teens mostly want cash or gift cards and Hubs and I don't need more "stuff". I'm going to try to find ways to support local businesses this year when I do buy.
I'll try to find gift cards/certificates to buy off of local small merchants(for consumables or experiences mostly)and try to stay out of the big box stores.

Speaking of big box stores and Black Friday, have a lookie at this SNL skit and tell me that this isn't where we are headed.....

Since I sold a few things on eBay on Thanksgiving(bless all those cyber shoppers with nothing to do but watch football on Thursday!lol) I'll be packing and shipping when I'm not strolling down the aisles at Rite-Aid on Friday seeing what food/HBA items I can bring home for free(or close to it).

Whatever you are doing on Black Friday, stay safe, stay sane and stay warm!

No Black Friday Here!

Ok....I am going to shock a bunch of you readers today.
Especially if you have read my shopping exploits all these past months.
Ready??

I do NOT go shopping on Black Friday!

There I said it and I was not struck down by lightning.

Ok, so why does a Shopping Maven like myself NOT imbibe in this Buying Holiday Ritual?
No, I am not Scrooge or the Grinch or Anti-Christmas/Hanukkah in any way, shape or form.

My reasons....
I do not enjoy crowds of surly people.
I do not enjoy standing in long lines, especially if it involves doing so in cold weather.
I do not enjoy being led by retailers like sheeple on the pretense of getting a "deal" that probably isn't.
And mostly....
I do not enjoy the mindlessly consuming of STUFF!

Add in that I don't enjoy DEBT....because that is what happens when you mindlessly comsume and spend all your money, or worse, spend money you Do NOT have.....can you say Credit Cards?...hello??

But if Black Friday is a day you enjoy the commraderie and excitement of going shopping, the best of luck to you in your pursuit.

Please keep in mind these points before you go....

1. Stay Safe!
Every year we hear reports of people being injured or even killed on Black Friday(remember that poor Security Guard at WalMart who was trampled to death?).  In your haste to get a deal, don't put yourself in a situation where you could be trampled in a rush to get into a store or to a limited quantity item.  Also don't get into a tug-of-war with other shoppers over a product.  Some folks, as my momma would have said, "are not raised right", and would just as soon hit you as smile at you if you try to take the last $2 toaster from the bin that they had their hands on when you went to grab it too.

2. Don't Stand in Lines for Hours.
Getting some valuable, highly sought after item for a really low price is exciting, I'll grant you that.  But think about what you are willing to do to get it for cheap.  How valuable is your time?  How much of that time are you willing to trade for a inexpensive electronic or 'hot' toy?  Is saving $50 on it's price worth spending 3 hours of your time waiting in dark frigid weather for a store to open?  Especially when that same electronic/toy will probably be on sale for a lot less next month or so, for what they are charging for it today?

If those lines entail waiting outside for a store to open it's doors, please be aware of what is going on around you.  If the store is in a questionably safe part of town and it's still dark outside please be vigilant and safety-minded.(This also would fall under #1 above.)  Many is the time someone has been attacked while waiting outside in the wee hours of the morning.  Also be aware that many people have been assaulted or robbed upon leaving a store if they were successful in obtaining some very limited item.  The frenzy retailers whip people up into selling these highly-limited-special-price-items makes some folks so crazy if they don't get the goods, that they'll commit a crime to get the item from you!  Don't be a victim of this.

3. Do some research and a reality check before you go.
Don't get blinded by consuming lust in regard to the Deals available on Black Friday.  Those glossy ads for that Plasma TV or whatever are created to suck you into spending money, true.  But make sure what they are advertising and what you are buying is truly a Good Deal.  Many times the 'incredibly low priced item' on Black Friday is a Non-Standard model or what they call a 'derivative' in the business.  It will not be the same as the standard model that sells for regular price.  There will be less features or other differences(made of cheaper materials, less or no warranty, etc.) in Black Friday's model.  That is why they can offer it so cheap.  That $2 toaster is probably only worth $2 and it might be just something else to dispose of in 6 months.  Retailers don't give you a great deal out of the goodness of their hearts.  They are in business for one reason....to make money.  To think anything else is naive on your part.
I'd recommend for starters that anyone who is 'chasing the deals' on Black Friday read THIS ARTICLE before shopping this year.  I think in regards to the 'deals' on Black Friday you need to keep the old adage, "You get what you pay for" in mind.

4. Remember what makes sense for your Budget and don't stray from that!
It's so easy, given the mass hysteria atmosphere in the stores on Black Friday, to spend too much money.  Buying something just because it is a STEAL is very common.  There is a physiologically proven "rush" to your system (via endorphins)when you get a bargain.  But raise your hand if you have succumb to buying a bargain just for the sake of it being a bargain, and when you got something home had no clue WHY you bought it and wish you had your hard-earned dollars back.  Before you hand over your money at the register, ask yourself, "do I REALLY NEED THIS ITEM?".  If the thrill of the moment has you in it's grips, try walking around the store with the item in your cart for awhile until you can think with a clear head.  You might find you end up telling yourself you can pass this bargain up and go on to the next deal.
If you are going shopping, take CASH ONLY and leave your credit cards at home.  Or if you plan on spending a lot of money and taking cash would be foolhardy(see #1 above), take a Debit Card that will deduct the money spent from your bank account directly.
And stick to a budgeted amount to spend.  Make this Holiday Season the first one where you have everything paid for BEFORE the HOLIDAY!  It makes for a much more enjoyable Holiday if you don't live with that thought in the back of your mind that you'll be paying it all off for months to come.

So why, you may ask, doesn't Sluggy feel the need to have to chase all those potential bargains on Black Friday?  I'll tell you.
Besides not enjoying crowds, cold, lines & too-much stuff, I don't have to endure those things to save a few dollars during the Holidays.

Because dear readers, if you look to the right along the side of my blog you'll see the evidence in my SAVINGS TOTALS for the YEAR, that I've spent wisely, using sales and coupons all year long.  Having managed my money throughout the year means I don't have to be a crazy person(my apologies to any crazy people out there) when it comes to saving on Holiday spending.  I don't go hog wild consuming at the Holidays like many in our culture.  Between living a frugal life during the rest of the year and spending moderately during the Holidays I have a paid off house, no credit card debt, no car payment, and I can put money away for emergencies, my kid's college and retirement.

So ask yourself what would you rather have?
Piles and piles of Stuff and no money to show for all your hard work?
Or no debt, high savings, a little bit of stuff and the freedom to live your life without owing anyone anything?
I know what I'd pick.....and have! ;-)

Happy Shopping and Stay Sensible.  I'll think of you while I'm toasty and warm in bed until Noon on Friday.

Sluggy
