The Other Side of the Food Budget

While I budgeted $300 for food/toiletries spending in November there is the "other" food spending every month.

The Eating Out spending.
Except for what Hubs spends at work on lunches(which he pays for out of his WAM=Walking Around Money)this amount includes all ready made foods/drinks from convenience store snacks/drinks to take-out foods to restaurant meals.

I like to keep it at $100 per month or less, unless we are taking a trip(s).  Trips always involve eating out spending(unless someone else is feeding us and that doesn't happen often).

In November we spent $79.90 on regular Eating Out and $33.00 Eating Out while on a trip.  Picking up College Boy last month meant an overnight stay in his college town and we took him out for dinner.
Luckily this trip was only a few hours so we left after lunch and the motel included breakfast in our room charge so there was only 1 meal out while away from home for all of November.

Combined total for Eating Out in November came to $112.90.  Below target for the regular Eating Out but a bit over with the trip meal.

I have a tab HERE where I have been tracking out Eating Out in 2015.
We are up to $2859.47 spent on this category so far for the year.

You can clearly see by looking at the monthly subtotals when we made trips this year.
Dang we were gone a LOT, weren't we? lolz

Keeping it under $3K for 2015 will be tight as we are off again on a short trip later this month so there will be more money spent on meals away from home.  I'll be lucky if we stay under $500 in December for trip meals.

I read that in 2012, the average American spent 4.5% of their income per year on meals away from home.  That seems like a LOT of money to me as a percentage of income to be spending on eating out.  I feel better that we are WAY under that for our income level.
I feel that if you aren't neglecting putting enough $ toward other categories of spending which are more of a priority in life(like rent/mortgage, utilities, retirement savings, etc.)then it's aok to spending on eating out if that gives you pleasure.

There's an interesting article HERE on Bloomberg Business online about how earlier this year Americans' spending on eating out surpassed their spending at the grocery store for the first time since this sort of thing has been tracked.

They hint that this new normal in spending can be chalked up to the Millennial Generation and how they spend compared to how Boomers and Gen Xers have spent.  Millennials appear to be freer with their cash on categories like cell phones, car purchases, clothing and eating out.  They also pay a larger proportion of their income to rent/mortgage as well.  It seems that they may have more uncommitted cash than Boomers especially if they are NOT saving-for home purchases, emergency funds or for retirement.  Typically 25-34 year olds aren't as "into" saving mode yet for the biggies in life nor do they have the burden of supporting children.

Do you track your Eating Out spending and/or do you budget for it?

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....
I went into November wanting to do a $300 food budget for the month and I only spent $295.96 leaving me with $4.04 leftover in the budget.  I met that goal. rah!

The monthly savings percentage went up by 19.65% in November to 78.99% compared to October's 59.34% savings average.  Anything over a 40% savings rate is a win in my book.  70+% is very rare and only happens now and again if I have a free store gift card to use.  8-)

The savings rate for the whole year so far now stands at 61.85%.  That's an increase of 2.64% in savings over October's YTD total(59.21%).  It's still hanging in well over a 40% savings rate for the year which is awesome!

I have spent a total of $4,019.37 on food/toiletries in 2015 so far at this point in the year. That averages out to $365.40 per month.  We are still under $400 per month average spending for the year.

LOOKING AHEAD To DECEMBER.........

We'll try for a $350 food budget for DECEMBER.  College Boy will be coming home the second week of the month when exams are over and will be home until the third week in January.  I suspect more money will be spent on food while he is home so I am not going to limit myself to $300 in December like I did in October and November.  I am planning on a Roast Beef dinner for Christmas and we all know how expensive beef is so there goes my $50 extra in the budget for this month. lolz

If you have other ideas or guidelines you follow please leave a comment and share yours with us all.
*  How much did you spend on food/toiletries in November?
*  Do you track your yearly food spending?
*  What was your savings percentage buying on sale and/or with coupons vs. buying at regular retail price last month, if you track that sort of thing?
*  What are your methods for keeping your food spending in check?

Weis and more Rite-Aid This Week

Well I went to Weis(PMITA)Markets last Friday as I withdrew the December food money last Friday.  Weis seems to be running 1 Day Specials lately and I didn't want to miss out on a few of them last Friday.  They had Helluva Cheese blocks 50% off so $1.50 for an 8 oz. chunk, good price here.  They also had a lb. bag of breaded flounder for $5, another good price for those nights I need a quick dinner for Hubs and I.  I also got a bag of salad mix 50% off and a box of croissants for College Boy to take back to school for 50% off.  I also got CB 5 12-packs of his favorite soda for $1.99 each(you had to buy 5 for the deal).
Hubs needed coffee filters(NOT ON SALE-EGADS!) and a bag of chips(on sale $1.77)and I had forgotten to get vanilla ice cream for the apple pie we had on Thanksgiving(Heaven forbid!!)so we found some Edy's on sale to finish the pie.
Oh, I also found a lovely london broil on sale that day only for $3.48lb. which ended up costing $5.08.  Hubs and I should get 2 meals out of that.

All in I spent $36.38 OOP.
This family gets expensive needing filters not on sale and non-essentials like ice cream, soda and chips. ;-)

Then I went to Weis again on Monday the 30th as the coupon on tomatoes I wanted to use was expiring that day.

Furmano's tomtoes were .67¢ each so I got 3 and used a $1/3 Q, making them .34¢ a can.
The half n' half was $1 per pint, $2 total for 2.(I plan to make quiche.)
The Daisy sour cream was on sale $1.99 and I have a .50¢/1Q that doubled, making this item .99¢.
The Grands! whack biscuits were an unexpected clearance find(Corn variety discountinued-$1.14 each).  I think I have a SavingStar rebate for .75¢/3 which should apply to this making them .89¢ per can.
An also unexpected find were 2 seasoned "cook in the bag" whole chickens for .98¢lb. I had already put one in the freezer when I finally got around to taking this photo so I only have the one I am cooking tonight to show.

This lot after deals/Qs set me back $16.92. That's just over a 50% savings rate over regular retail on this group.

I am up to $53.30 spent in December on the food budget and it's only the 2nd. meh.

And then I went back to Rite-Aid this morning for more freebies..........

I found a clearance HE hair conditioner marked down to $1.49 and I had a $2/1 Herbal Essence item Catalina Q so that was a .51¢ moneymaker.

The freebies for the Wed-Sat. Sale this week are the flavored seltzer water bottles-buy 3/$2 get $2 back in points(limit of 2 deals per card or 6 bottles)and select reg. candy bars-buy 3/$2 get $2 back in points(limit of 2 deals per card or 6 bars).  They give back as much in Plenti points as they cost so free if you roll your points(outside of the tax if any).

This lot was $7.70(with .21¢ tax on the conditioner)and I earned $8 in new Plenti points.

Then I rinsed and repeated and bought the same candy bars and seltzer bottles on my son's card.
That lot was $8.24(don't know why there was .24¢ tax on this as food is NOT taxed in PA and we don't have a bottle deposit either!)and I earned $8 in new Plenti points.

I also bought 2 more Kohl's gift cards on the card I didn't buy them on yet and earned "free" $10 in Plenti points.

The Weis ad changes tomorrow but so far the only thing I want there is maybe the Angel Soft TP-12 roll packs for $3.87.  There are $1/1 Qs on coupons dotcom right now for the 12 mega roll packs(I need to see if they apply to the size on sale at Weis still).  If these coupons are good on this size item at Weis, plus there is a SavingStar Rebate for $5 off wyb $15 Angel Soft so this could be $6.48 OOP for 4 12-roll packs after Qs and Rebate.  That's $1.62 per package of 12-rolls.  Awesome if it works!

I also need to pick up napkins at the local market this week for .99¢ per package and then I am done for the week.

I've already got next week's menu almost all planned and I don't need to buy anything for it, using items picked up this week or stuff I had already in the pantry/freezer.

So what have you gotten a good deal on this week at the stores?

Want to win this box of Christmas Cheer?

You may get ONE ENTRY per Day by leaving a comment on this blog post until the Giveaway ends.

Please leave a comment if you become a Follower or are a Follower already and give me your ID/name on there so I can verify it.
* Join the Bloggers United Federation if you have a blog to get 1 more entry.  Leave a comment saying you want to join up with your blog addy and I'll hook you up.

Disclaimer--This giveaway is open to those with mailing addresses within the US or Canada only.
If you are in Canada, you will receive a smaller box of goodies, as the shipping rates internationally are ridiculous and I am not taking out a mortgage on my house to pay to ship this stuff.  ;-)

**
If you need this shipped to Canada, I'll have to change the box and it's contents a bit.  I can ship a plain box weighing up to 3lbs. via 1st class mail, which, while much more than the flat rate Priority to US addys, is still affordable.  These prize boxes usually weigh 7 or more lbs. when full, so if the winner is in Canada, I'll let them pick and choose which of the items they prefer sent in their box, until the box weighs 3lbs.  I hate to have to do this(not ship ALL prizes to them)but I would hate it even more to exclude them totally from entering the giveaway.

***NOTE***
Please make sure there is a way for me to contact you in your comment.  If you're not a registered Blogger User with your contact information(email)on your User page, please put your email addy in your comment or email me your email addy privately(if you don't want it publicly put in a comment) when you leave a comment so I can get a hold of you if you win. If your Blogger associated user profile is a GOOGLE one with those Google Circles nonsense I CAN NOT CONTACT YOU as Google Circles doesn't show your contact info.  I again had to disqualify some entrants in the last giveaway because their profile is linked through Google and not Blogger.  Please check your profile!

And if you ARE entering through a Blogger profile PLEASE have contact info(email addy)in that profile.  If I can't access your email addy I can't contact you so email me your email addy or fix your User Profile.

If I can't contact you then you can't win.  I have had to disqualify more readers than I care to, due to this issue and I sure don't want it to happen again.  Thanks!

So let's get this started!

More Rite-Aid This Week

Well this week's ad had me going back up to Rite-Aid Sunday morning after College Boy left to go back to school.

First on my son's card..........

6 x Schick men's disposable razors on sale 2/$14=$42.00

Coupons Used
2 x $7/2 Schick razors IPQ(coupons dotcom)=$14.00
1 x $7/2 Schick razors Load2CardQ=$7.00
Coupon Total.........$21.00

$42-$21=$21.00 + $1.90tax=$21.90 Subtotal

Used $21.90 in Plenti Points and earned $20 in new points with Zero OOP.
This means each package "cost" me .31 & 2/3¢ in this transaction.

Then I bought 6 more packages with my card and rinse and repeat........

6 x assorted Schick disposable razor packages on sale 2/$14=$42.00

I used the same 3 coupons as before.

$42-$21Qs=$21 + $1.92tax=$21.92 Subtotal
I don't know why this transaction tax was 2 cents more. 8-P

Anyway, I used $21.92 in Plenti Points and earned $20 in new points with Zero OOP.
This means each package "cost" me .32¢ in this transaction.

So I now have a 2 year supply of razors at .31 or .32¢ per package or 145 razors for .026¢ each.
Sweet!

I also bought 2 x $25 Kohl's gift cards on my card and earned $10 in new Plenti points.
I may go back later this week and buy 2 more gift cards on my son's card too for the points.
I use these Kohl's gift cards for gifts or to purchase clothing when College Boy needs replacement items so the cash for them doesn't come out of the food/toiletries monies.  It's spending ahead on the gift cards for money that will have to be spent later on but doing it this way I get "free" points/money to put toward toiletries at Rite-Aid.
