$24K Savings Challenge.......November Update

Every year I keep a close eye on our monthly expenses and our monthly income.
Our income is mainly the salary my Hubs draws from his job.  We have money taken off each paycheck from the top to put into savings, before we even get our hands on it.  This money that's taken goes into various pots....life insurance, health insurance premiums, long term care insurance premiums, investments and retirement savings.  It's automatic so we are never tempted to NOT put it into savings.

Once the automatic savings amounts, plus taxes and medical/dental/vision premiums are taken out, it leaves what we get to "live on".  From this amount we budget for bills, both monthly and irregular bills(semi-annual, annual etc.) and our variable bills(like food, eating out, clothing  etc.)  Anything left over once our monthly expenses are paid, I put aside into a Savings Challenge.

For 2014 I am continuing my Yearly Savings Challenge.  I am raising the Goal amount slightly to $24,000 this year, $4K more than my goal for last year.

On to the November report.....

I have posted my November End of Month $24K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the Savings Challenge page tab at the top of the blog for the specific numbers HERE.

I have 2 goals each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $2,000.

I have to report that we finished up November with a large chunk of change.
The extra amount we ended the month of  November with?.......$2,877.50.

Income

We had $2753.83 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.
The lower utility bills with College Boy away at school have helped us keep more of our income.

Other monies received in November totaled $123.67.  This included interest made on non-retirement accounts.

This brought us to our gain of $2,877.50.
Since we have no debt, this goes into savings.

Outgo
As for the expenses this November, here are the good and the bad side of things....

HERE are the GOOD THINGS

*  The cable/internet was $89.68 lower than our new normal of about $40 because of a refund on a portion of October's bill when we got rid of cable.
*  The water bill went down another $5.10 from October's bill.  That's a total decrease of $37.79 since July's bill, the last bill with College Boy home fulltime.
*  Phone charges were approx. the same as last month.
 *  Electric bill was up $57.77 because the heat was on all of November, where it was only on sporadically in October.  We had our new heating unit repaired and didn't have to rely on the other electric heating system in the house.  I think the mini-split system is more efficient as we've never had a November heating/electricity bill under $200 before this month! 8-)))  Even though the electric bill was higher this month from last, I am putting this item under the "Good Things".

HERE are the BAD THINGS

*  Cash spending increased by $70.
*  The credit card bill(paid off each month)was up $574.34 from last month's bill.  Mostly due to some Xmas shopping and our OC mini-vacation.
*  We had some irregular spending too--a charitable $ donation, Kohl's Xmas shopping cc bill and final Vet expenses for our doggie.   Yeah, that last one was bad in more than the financial way. 8-(

The Food Budget costs for November are in another post, which is located HERE.

The 2014 GRAND TOTAL.....
With 11 months accounted for, our Savings Grand Total for 2014 is $26,353.19.

We have surpassed our goal for the year and there is one more month to save even more $!
Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!

I will be curious to see how much we can sock away in December.  I am hoping at least $1K.  With Christmas and traveling plans(expenses)I don't want to get my hopes up any higher than that.  Last December we put away just over $1,200.
It would be nice to have that kind of a cushion going into January as our medical high deductible resets and I'll be paying retail for some pricey drugs. 8-(

Looking ahead for December......

*  I will continue to do this Savings Challenge and report in each month on how it is going.

*  We have no irregular bills due in December.

So how was your November financially?

Did you spend less than the income you had in November?
Did you stay within your budget or not?
Did you pay off any debts or put extra toward your mortgage principle or into savings in an emergency fund or a retirement account?

If you posted your financial progress on your own blog, leave a link in the comments so we can go check out your progress too and celebrate with you or commiserate with you!

Groceries This Week

Well so much for just buying eggs at the grocery store this week.  ;-)

I went up to Weis(PMITA)Markets for eggs....2 dozen for $3.

But I ended up buying all this......

While I was in the store I browsed the produce.  After last week's carb fest I was feeling the need for more greens.
I found cole slaw mix, baby salad greens and collards all 1/2 price w/instant discount stickers.
I also found croissants 1/2 off on the bakery rack.
We needed Greek Yogurt and a big tub of Cabot was $3.50.
The coffee was BOGO and I had a $1/1 Q so 2 bags for $4.69 total.
I was craving a pork tenderloin sandwich so picked up a small pack of that.
I found fresh cod fillets for $4.88(to go with the cole slaw of course).
The perdue breaded chicken cutlets were on sale $4 and then another 40% off so 2/$4.80.
Then I found meat discount stickers on some no nitrite bacon and hot dogs making them reasonable in price.
The best find was packs of Dogfish Head Brats......

$6.99 on sale for $5.99 this week.
These had $2 instant discount stickers($3.99)AND .75¢ peelie Qs(which doubled to $1) so I paid $2.99 out the door per pack.  Not bad for a special treat I don't pick up often.

OOP $39.91 on $72.21 of groceries.
A 44% savings rate.

I can live with that. 8-)

Sunday's Rite-Aid Trip & Today's 4 Day Sale Trip

I have $40.15 in Up Rewards to roll in the next 2 weeks so up to Rite-Aid I toddled.

My first transaction I had a $3 off $30 Catalina that spit out on Saturday on one of my cards so the goal was to get to $30 before Qs......

2 x Spinbrush on sale $5.99=$11.98
2 x Vaseline on sale $5.99=$11.98
5 x Gerber baby foods on sale but 20% discount better at $1.51=$7.55
SubTotal......$31.51

Coupons Used
1 x $3/$30 purchase Catalina Q=$3.00
2 x $2/1 Spinbrush(on Arm & Hammer website)IPQ=$4.00
1 x BOGOFree Vaseline ManuQ=$5.99
1 x $2/1 Vaseline Hangtag ManuQ=$2.00
1 x $2/1 Vaseline 20oz. Video ValuesQ=$2.00
1 x $1/5 Gerber foods IPQ=$1.00
Coupon Total.....$17.99

I also used a Unilever/Feed a Friend Donation Q(the company will make a donation to that organization wyb a Unilever product-Vaseline).  That Q expires today so I was glad to have the opportunity to use it though I derive nothing for it, besides the satisfaction. 8-)

Anyway, back to our transaction details--
$31.51-$17.99=$13.52 + .11¢tax=$13.63

I should have used $13 in +Ups and paid .63¢ OOP.
But the register wouldn't take 3 of my Qs-$1/5 Gerber, the second $2/1 Spinbrush and the $2/1 Vaseline Video Values, making my total $18.63.

So I paid $18 in +Ups and .63¢ OOP and then they gave me $5 for those 3 Qs out of the register.
I received back $19 in new +Up Rewards(2 x $3 Spinbrush, $3 Arm & Hammer wyb $10, 2 x $3 Gerber wyb 2, 2 x $2 Vaseline).
I am "up" $1 in +Ups and $5 back(the $5 +Ups I should have used converted to cash)for this transaction.

And the Catalina machine spit out another $3 wyb $30 Q for this card! lolz

Then I bought on my card.......

2 x Vaseline Men's Spray on clearance $4.14=$8.28
1 x Newspaper=.99¢
Subtotal......$9.27

Coupons Used
2 x $2/1 Vaseline Spray Video ValuesQ=$4.00
1 x .50¢/1 Vaseline Spray Load2Card=.50 *
Coupon Total.....$4.50

$8.27-$4.50=$4.77
I used $4.59 in +Up Rewards and paid .18¢ OOP.
I received back $4 in new +Up Rewards(2 x $2 Vaseline).

Total for the day spent......81¢ then got back $5 so spending is negative $4.19. ;-)
$12.59 in old +Ups used, $23 in new +Ups back.

$17.57 in old +Ups to roll + $23 in new +Ups gives me $40.57 at the moment.

The SpinBrush Deal double dips this week.  The SpinBrushes give a $3 +Ups per brush(limit of 2 per card/account) AND as they are Arm & Hammer products they also give a $3 +Ups when you spend $10 on A&H products.
So buy 2 SpinBrushes for $11.98.  Use 2 x $2/1 Qs and pay $7.98(+ tax) and get $9 in +Ups back(1 for each Spin Brush and 1 additional for spending over $10 on A&H).....a $1.02 moneymaker.
Nice.

* The .50¢ Load2Card Vaseline spray Q was totally unexpected, but I'll take the savings! lolz

Then I went back up today for the 4 Day Sale Deals.

The problem was the Spin Brushes are part of this 4 Day Sale as a BOGO Free Deal and now aren't $5.99 each but you pay $9.99 or $11+ depending on the type you pick for 1 and the 2nd one is free.
You still get the $3 +Ups for each one(even the free one)but this is a worse deal than what it was earlier in the week.
Before you paid $11.98-$4 in Qs, paying $7.98 and got 3 x $3 +Up Rewards back.
During the 4 Day Sale you pay $9.99 but you can only use 1 x $2 Q(b/c the other brush is free), so $9.99-$2 in Qs, paying $7.99 and get only 2 x $3 +Up Rewards back, because now your total for Arm & Hammer/Spin Brush spending is only $9.99 before Qs instead of $11.98 before Qs so the $3 +Ups wyb $10 doesn't get tripped as you are 1 cent from $10 in spending.
Got that? lolz

So here is what I did today........I did end up spending down some +Ups as there were good deals, not free but good.......

2 x Spin Brushes or refills BOGO=$9.99
2 x Arm & Hammer toothpaste BOGO=$4.99
2 x Kleenex BOGO=$2.79
2 x Lipton tea bags BOGO=$4.29
4 x Scotch tape 2/$2=$4.00
1 x Aleve PM 20% wellness discount=$5.43
1 x Dial Hand Soap on sale=$1.49
SubTotal.......$32.98

Coupons Used
1 x $2/1 Spin Brush IPQ=$2.00
1 x $1/2 Arm & Hammer toothpaste IPQ=$1.00
1 x $1/2 Kleenex Load2Card Q=$1.00
1 x $1/2 Kleenex Facebook Q=$1.00
1 x $1/2 Lipton products ManuQ=$1.00
2 x $1/1 Scotch product VideoValues Q=$2.00
1 x $2/1 Aleve PM MaunQ=$2.00
1 x $2/1 Aleve PM Q given out in store valid today only=$2.00
1 x .75¢//1 Dial hand soap Facebook Q=.75¢
Coupon Total.....$12.75

$32.98-$12.75=$20.23
I used $19.98 in +Up Rewards and paid .28¢ OOP.
I received back $11 in new +Up Rewards(3 x $3 Arm & Hammer, 2 x $1 Scotch tape).

The Aleve PM purchase puts me over $25 spent so I'll be getting a $5 SavingStar cash refund.

The only free items(give back +Ups for what I paid out)were the Aleve PM and the Scotch tape rolls.
The Dial hand soap cost me .75¢, the tea bags cost me $3.29(for 2 boxes) and the Kleenex cost me .79¢ for 2 boxes(the Facebook Q and the Load2Card Q stacked).  The 2 toothbrushes and 2 toothpastes cost me $2.98 for all 4.  I have more SpinBrush Qs to use with my 3rd Wellness card but probably won't do that deal anymore this week as it costs me +Ups now with the 4 Day Sale.

So I am "down" $8.98 in +Ups for all this but I am "up" a $5 cash rebate.

What in the Pan Fried Hell?!

Is the World going nuts lately or what?!

Last week here there was a shoot out between a cop and a druggie in broad daylight in the parking lot next to the CVS in Wilkes-Barre.  This is the same CVS where my daughter rammed my van into the pole holding the awning at the front of the store when she was learning to drive and near a Chinese restaurant we like to go to on occasion.

On Monday when I went to my closest KMart the parking lot was swarming with police cars.  Assorted cops where asking people in the parking lot whether they saw anything amiss in the parking lot caused by the HOME INVASION that happened that morning a block away from that store.

And my local news feed this morning is reporting about a worker at Weis Markets in a nearby town who was stabbed in the back, with a pair of scissors, by a customer in that store.

WTF?!?!

Is the moon almost full or is it the gloomy weather lately or just a big case of the Christmas Whackos?

UPDATE-The whacko with the scissors told the police officers that he is a pirate who came to American on the Santa Maria in 1776. 8-P

It's getting to the point where I just don't want to leave my house......
