  1. We usually gather as a family for the traditional Thanksgiving meal. This year is going to be rather disappointing and I may actually end up at Cracker Barrel by myself :(.

  2. Normally we do Thanksgiving the day after the holiday (due to the in-law obligations) AND no one likes turkey!! However, I bought a turkey fryer a couple of years ago and only used it once (also fried that turkey to a crisp!eeekkk! and yuk!!). This year I will adhere to the instructions!! and fry a magazine worthy beautiful turkey (or not)

  4. Thanksgiving for us is a part thankful meal part birthday celebration for Rebecca and my niece. Rebecca was born Nov 28 and my niece was born Nov 26. This year we will celebrate Rebecca's b-day on Thanksgiving. That means pumpkin pie AND birthday cake for our family. LOL

  7. Usually no family around. Maybe some turkey and the usual parades on TV. Remembering the years when it was fun to get together.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Since my daughters and grands are grown it's hard to get together on actual holiday. We have a family holiday weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas. First night is big Thanksgiving dinner. Next day is family treasure hunt and visit to animal shelter with bags of food and treats. That night we have a hay ride around community singing Christmas Carol's. We end the night with opening presents that have a different theme each year. Last year was second hand Christmas. Gifts had to come from thrift store, yardsale, etc. We always draw names for next year and pick a theme. The last day is Christmas dinner and a Happy Birthday Jesus cake and reading of Christmas story before everyone heads home.

  15. I am a long time reader but never commented or entered a give away. I was looking at this one and realized, "holy smokes, that would finish off my stocking stuffers." And being the frugalista I am, I decided to go ahead and enter.

Our family has a friendly competition as to who can find the best gift at the lowest price. Most gifts don't make it to competition level but we each strive for one entry. My little sister won last year. She purchased a brand new crockpot with my college logo. Normally, 69.00 for 15.00 because one corner of the box was damaged. I love it.

This competition started in the 90's when my mom gave me a gift bag with, " I hope you like your gift. Yard sales don't give receipts, " printed on it. Inside was a divided dish that was melamine and from the 60's.it cost 50 cents and was my favorite gift that year. It was only meant to be a gag gift along with my other gifts.

It was a duplicate of one featured in the Gladware commercials. It was the only one that was never lost when sent with food to a loved one or taken to a potluck. I love that thing. Sometimes, I'll take it to a gathering and people always recognize it as the ugly dish from the commercial. It always makes it back home with me. LOL! Unlike, some of my actual Gladware.

If I win this giveaway, I'll have more than one entry and have a great story to share about the acquisition.

  20. We normally do your typical Thanksgiving with turkey and all the extras but this year will be different. DD now lives in Washington and will be working so we won't get to see her and we recently reconnected with some family and will be getting together with them at a house they rented in Lake Tahoe. We will definitely still be doing a turkey because there is NOTHING better than Thanksgiving leftovers!!

  30. When the kids were little and the Christmas lists were longer I always did the up at 4:30 a.m. Friday after Thanksgiving shopping. Sometimes it was cold, sometimes it was sleeting, but whatever we were in line at a store. Now that everyone is older (and maybe a little smarter) I don't go in for the craziness. I may pay a little more but I get to keep my sanity :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. YOu had me at chocolate! We have an intimate, family (aplus 1 is OK) celebration at 12 noon, food is put away and then Y.O.Y.O. come supper. Traditional menu: roast turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, home canned orange whole cranberry sauce, creamed peas and onions, an additional veg TBD, sausage stuffing (my maternal great grandmother's recipe). Dessert is usually pumpkin pie but may offer a second option as well. No black friday. I happily have avoided the crowds but still got the deals from home w/ internet shopping. I always aim to be done with my limited shopping by Thanksgiving anyway.

  36. I love cranberry from a can. One year right after New Years I found them marked down to 9¢ a can at CVS. I bought all that they had which was over 70 cans. The cashier thought I was crazy. I gave 10 to my mom and 3 of my sisters. That left me with a little over 30. We went through them before they expired.

  37. Celebrating an “alternative” Thanksgiving: once many years ago we went to an Indian restaurant for Thanksgiving. We were the only people there. One of the children fussed and the waiters did everything they could to cheer her up. It was sweet. But I have to say, I missed the real Thanksgiving and have never skipped it since.

  38. Oh my make up and chocolate. What fun! My favorite thanksgiving was when my mom, me and my sister in law decided to have lasagna, salad and garlic bread - cheesecake for dessert for Thanksgiving. None of the guys knew it and they were so upset on Thanksgiving day so we had to make a full Thanksgiving dinner a few days later so they would be happy. It was so yummy but they wanted tradition. Take care.

Come Morning we take a short nap. Then we get up, put the family Turkey in the oven, pack up to go plates and deliver to my hospice patients who have no one or no means to prepare. We come home check on the turkey and sit around chatting.

  60. We don't really do appetizers before Thanksgiving because thanks to my mom 12pm means 1130am for time to eat. and we strongly discourage a big breakfast to save room for all the food and desserts ….lunch seems to last all day!!

  61. Early in our marriage we always had extra people at our Thanksgiving table. One year 30 people! Some were teenage kids who lived on their friends couches because their parents kicked them out. ReplyDelete
  69. Grateful: I’m grateful to wake up every morning. For friends and family. Not just on Thanksgiving. But Thanksgiving is a good time to reflect on it!

    ReplyDelete
  70. One of the things we do after Thanksgiving dinner is to put a gingerbread house or train together (one of those kits from Walmart or Target) This year we are doing 2 gingerbread turkeys we picked up at Trader Joe's It turns out to be a lot of fun and somewhat of a competition to see who can to it worse sometimes!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. One year we had friends stop by and stay for Thanksgiving. They were very nomadic people. Living in their station wagon (this was about 10 years ago) with their little boy. Sort of like hippies roaming the country and homeschooling. When they needed new clothes just went to a thrift store and got them. Never carried much with them. I left my husband and her husband in the kitchen to make gravy while I set the table in the dining room. Little did I know neither one of them had ever made gravy. When I came back in a short while later gravy or what passed for gravy was on the stove, counters, walls and ceiling. I assume they used the mixer or blender. Never did find out. They had some cleaning to do after we ate. lol. Why do I have so many weird Thanksgiving stories? Who knows.

I don't need a recipe, but i make Jello like my mother did for every holiday or special occassion--black cherry and banana-strawberry Jello, bananas, diced apples, and fruit cocktail. It reminds me very much of my mother.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I don't do Black Friday shopping, in part because I dislike that it encourages companies to force their employees to work on Thanksgiving to prep for it. We do #OptOutside instead - we go hiking as a family. It's a nice way to work off all that pie, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  75. No, I dont watch football games or the parade. After we eat, most of us will sit around and look at Black Friday ads.

  76. We use to go to the beach sometimes for Thanksgiving and the cabin had a very small kitchen so I would order a T dinner from Boston Market. We would pick up our order on the way out of town, the food was really good, and preparation was minimal. My kids would tell friends I never cooked (not true!) and our T dinner came from Boston Market.

    ReplyDelete
  77. One year we went to The Nugget (Hotel/Casino)for our Thanksgiving Buffet. It was good and we were stuffed but I missed having leftovers so a few days later cooked a turkey breast and stuffing / some other sides. Lesson learned it was expensive to go - Mother in law wanted to go. And we missed our leftovers! Plus the walk to the Rose Ballroom where it was held was soooo long! Take care.

If the weather is nice on thanksgiving day ….the younger generation usually have a flag football game going on in the afternoon....the older generation have a new Christmas puzzle every year that we all sit around the table and get pieced together... I don't like playing cards but even the little ones like to play a game or two of UNO while we snack on leftovers from lunch.

All my frozen berries and canned cranberry sauce are in the dump. I may just get the canned smooth sauce this year and call it good.

I did get a container from trader joe's for how I make my cranberry sauce (there are lots of variations) and it is exactly like mine so I may just add that do the table this year...wonder if anyone would notice?? :)

  89. I love to read all the Thanksgiving posts from everyone. This year on Thanksgiving would have been my dad's Birthday. He passed away 4 years ago. The last time his birthday fell on Thanksgiving (Nov. 28th) we had a huge amount of people over to my sister in law's house for dad's 75th birthday and Thanksgiving. Everyone but my granddaughter got food poisoning. Funny thing was all the vegans in the family (and not normal vegans -annoying ones who think they are always right) said it was the smoked turkey that gave everyone food poisoning. Well the vegans all got sick first by that night and the rest of us during the night or into the next morning. My little granddaughter cried because she didn't get to be sick like everyone else. lol. Dad got it too but also cellulitis in his leg and ended up in the hospital Thanksgiving evening. Oh what a mess it all was. Yep, good times. NOT. lol. I now call my Sister in law - Typhoid Nicola when she annoys me because it happened at her house.

My kids won't be coming home until the day after Thanksgiving so I am going to be spending it with very dear friends and we will be having a Mexican feast. He is a cook at a Mexican restaurant so it will be top quality! The down side is that there will be no cold turkey left over for sandwiches :(

    ReplyDelete
  93. We are definitely the type of people who wait until the day AFTER Thanksgiving to decorate for Xmas. With small kids, they go a little Christmas Crazy once all the decorations are up!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Christmas decorations are never put out before Thanksgiving. That was the tradition growing up and my husband and I have continued it. Besides, I am always ready to have the tree down and the mess cleaned up and life back to normal. I cant imagine having it up any earlier.

  95. One year a friend had his new bride (from a foreign country - a small one but I forget which one it was) and they came to the big noisy Thanksgiving at our house. We had such a huge table. She couldn't figure out why were were eating such a big bird and in trying to explain Thanksgiving to her she got so confused about the whole concept. It was odd explaining something to someone that didn't come from here. She must of thought we were crazy.

  103. I went and bought all the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner today. We're not big pie fans so I'm going to make apple crisp with vanilla ice cream!

  105. I bought two turkeys this week for .49/lb. I got a large one for the whole family on Thursday and then a smaller one just for us at a later time.

  106. When I host Thanksgiving at my home, we rent a giant bounce house for the kids and the adults. It's a big hit with our guests. Keeps everyone busy and provides entertainment. Certainly not frugal, but the memories are priceless.

  107. I am thankful for everything. I am seeing so many people going through terrible things and tough circumstances and it makes me so grateful for my life.

  110. We always cook at home. We deep fry our turkey in peanut oil after a liberal application of lemon pepper.
We use the barefoot contessa’s cranberry conserve recipe without the raisins. We make green beans with bacon, scalloped potatoes, I doctor up some stove top for my husband and cornbread dressing for the rest of us, gluten free gravy, Rolls for the wheat eaters.
We have cherry pie and gluten free brownies and pumpkin bread.
Serve with water, iced tea and wine.
This year there will be only four of us, but we are still doing it.
Hope yours is amazing. Patti in Cali

  113. We've done Thanksgiving in Hawaii before. It was the last night before we flew home (poor planning), so we had to eat whatever was left in the condo fridge/freezer. Pretty sure we had chicken nuggets. But, no complaints, because we ate on the lanai & had a glass of wine watching the ocean. The scenery totally made it work.

We're having steak this year, as neither kid likes turkey. I love cranberry sauce (homemade), but have no reason to buy it this year. I did pick up some at Trader Joes, and will put it on my mashed potatoes, just to make it feel a bit more festive. ;-)

  120. Haha...I scrolled down to comment, and have forgotten the specific questions :)

Thanksgiving is at one of my daughter's place this year, but we'll all bring food.

I make 'real' cranberry sauce (mostly for me, but I digress..) We serve the traditional meal, but have incorporated new to us dishes from our girls' husbands/boyfriends Thanksgivings.

We always watch the parade while getting the food prepared. We were never much for football, but the young guys have initiated that new tradition.

I have shopped Black Friday in the way past, but now I'm too tired for that craziness and am mostly done before then. If I do venture out, it's to a small shop and for a reason (never been a big shopper.) When our girls were at home, we'd go on that day to cut our Christmas tree at a place about an hour north of us....a much more fun tradition!

Happy Thanksgiving! Sdelar @ frontiernet (dot) net
