April Goals.....How I Did

Here's a run down of how I did on my April Goals---

* Do 50 rows on Crochet Project
FAIL
Actually the crochet yarn got buried in a pile sitting next to my desk and I totally forgot about it until late last week, when I uncovered it while looking for my eye surgery paperwork.

* Clean House
FAIL
I cleaned a little bit(mostly bathrooms)but didn't feel motivated to really clean much other than the basics.
This is the BIG DRAWBACK with now having a "good eye"......I can actually see how dirty my house is!!!
I feel pressure now to clean and I sure don't like that! lolz

* Reorganize Toiletries Room
DONE
Got it done.  I still have too many toiletries! lolz

* Bike 30 miles
DONE
I shattered that goal.......

Photo was taken the night of the 30th, 52.50 miles for April.
I'll be upping my goal in May to 70 miles.  I've already passed the 12 mile mark 4 days into May so I don't think 70 miles will be a problem.  8-)

* Use Hand Weights 12 days
FAIL
It just hasn't become a habit with me yet.  Maybe I was too ambitious trying to start 2 different exercise goals at once?  I don't know.
I'll take the weights with me on our vacation though and attempt to get "into" this exercise goal since I can't take the bike. ;-)

* Pay the Bills
DONE
Everything has been paid off, except about $623 on a medical bill.  I could pay it now in full from the HSA but that would leave us very short in that account.  So I am paying it off a little every payday week as more funds get deposited into the HSA.

* Have Eye Surgery
DONE
I go for my 1 week follow-up on Friday.  I may try to drive tomorrow, though I am still not confident I can yet.  Having good vision in 1 eye and bad vision in the other eye is driving me crazy!  And walking is sort of difficult.  We went out to Lowe's on Sunday and I had a hard time walking around without feeling off balance.  I find myself either closing one eye or the other to look at something, depending on if it's close up or far away.  Typing at the computer the letters are sort of blurry using both eyes so I can't be on here very long before I get a headache or my eye waters up. bleh
I really need to have the other eye done and SOON!

* Finish May Vacation Plans
FAIL
Hubs has been no help with this so far.  I hate having to make all the plans myself!  I am easy to please, just put me in the car and go.....I can find things to do and make it up along the way.  Hubs wants plans and then gets annoyed when I don't plan things around what HE wants to do. ugh. men.

* Cut out 2 Tops and Sew Them
FAIL
Well I started making a pattern for the shirts but haven't gotten to the actual cutting and sewing of the fabric.  Does it count that I hemmed a pair of pants for Hubs during this time? lol

* Hold April Giveaway
DONE
Well not totally completed as the Giveaway is still going on until Saturday night but it will be concluded soon and shipped off to the lucky winner.

* Take donation to Food Bank
DONE
 10 Jugs of laundry detergent
4 jars of peanut butter to local food bank a week ago last Friday

* Pack stuff to take to LA
DONE
I have quite the pile of things to take to the Daughter, between toiletries and foodstuffs, assorted items and her stack of books......

and of course the gorilla suit. 8-)
She doesn't want this stuff it turns out............
a mountain of tampons and pads.  I've been getting this stuff over the last 6 months or so for free or pennies on the dollar, mostly at Rite-Aid for her, collecting it until we were traveling down there to see her so I could bring it all to her.
All that work for naught. sigh.
Good thing this stuff doesn't weight much and I can actually sell it on eBay, or locally on a For Sale F/B site.
Or just give it to the local food bank if I don't feel like dealing with selling it all.  I have options which is great.

* Write a letter
FAIL
Nope, didn't do it......goes on the May list.

* Put all headstone photos on F.A.G.
DONE
I got all my backlog of headstone photos put up on FAG.  Now I am ready to take more photos as the weather is perfect for that activity now.

* Work on Genealogy
DONE
I got quite a bit of progress made on the family history stuff.  I even started scanning more old family photos into the computer to get them digitized and online.  I worked on some other people's trees as well this month and connected with a fellow genealogist researching the ROCHE line too.  Unfortunately it looks like our ROCHE lines are not the same and I had to tell her about my doubts.  We did bond a bit due to both of us having some similar family issues with our grandparents and the secrets that were kept from us.  More information on my side of that coming in May in one of my long ass, boring genealogy posts.  ;-)

* Apply for Passport
FAIL
I actually filled out and printed the forms I need to do this but haven't gathered the other documents or written and check and taken it up to the PO where they will accept and send it off.  I was surprised to see that you have to provide an actual date of travel to even get a passport!  What if I don't have a definite date of travel yet, and it's just something I want for when I do decide to go out of the country?  It makes no sense to me.......should I just make a date and destination up?
sigh.  I don't want to lie but the government will force me to it seems. lolz

It was a mixed bag of successes and failures in April.  The FAILS get moved onto May's list and I'll add some new items(+ re-add items that need doing again this month)and come up with my new monthly goals list very soon.

Did you have any personal goals for April?
How did you do with your list?

April Eating Out

I was reading Cindi's latest post over at Thrifty At Sixty and decided to add up how much we spent at Chez Sluggy on eating out/take-out last month.

                                  Image credit the BarfBlog
Usually our eating out/take-out spending is counted in the Cash Withdrawals category of our monthly spending.  Cash withdraws encompass all small cash spending for the month which usually includes take-out, dining out(but that is sometimes put on the c/c instead), hubs haircuts, dry cleaning, his coffee habit and when he buys lunch at work, any incidental purchases for the home(repair items, tools, when some kid comes to the front door to sell us something for school fundraising, the Sunday newspaper, etc.)

I started this exercise thinking, "Gee, we hardly spent ANYTHING on eating out/take-out this month!".
Well I was wrong, as usual.....lol

April Eating Out/Take-Out Spending
Chinese take-out  $18(we got 2 meals out of this)
Bob Evans eating out  $22(used a coupon)
Popeye chicken take-out  $20(we got 2 meals out of this)
Subway sandwiches take-out  $12
Domino's sandwiches take-out  $12
Total.....$84

Granted 2 of the meals we got 2 meals out of them so 7 meals for $84

I noticed a pattern that ALL of these meals were Weekend(does Friday night count as the weekend? lol)expenditures and all but 2 of them were Lunch meals.  Only 1 of the 7 was eaten away from home.

I was going to start keeping track of this category of spending but we are on vacation in May so I KNOW most of the meals(if not all)eaten while traveling will be eaten out, so this won't be representative of our usual amount of eating out/take-out spending.

Since we can afford this amount easily in our budget, I am not looking to reduce this spending.
But I do like to know what we are spending and where.
If we ever need to cut corners more on monthly expenses, this is the kind of thing I'd target to reduce or cut out altogether.

Our eating out/take-out spending is more about a break from the routine of cooking at home for us, rather than it being about a great tasty and flavorful adventure in dining.  We don't buy fancy foods when eating out, just stuff we don't make at home(fried chicken, Chinese cuisine, etc.) or a quick sandwich.
It helps that we are not paying for a family of 5 any longer when we go out.  Heck even Chinese take-out for 5 use to cost us $40+!

Have you ever kept tracking of your eating out/take-out spending?
Do you have an eating out/take-out category in your budget?
Are you trying to cut down on your eating out/take-out spending?

This Week on the Dining Table

It's the "Busy Weekend" Edition--

Well we seemed to have gone from Winter right to early Summer weather.  This weekend was gloriously warm and sunny so we headed outside to work on some outdoor projects.  This pile of white stones figured into one of those projects.

Anyway, onward to the meal planning!

Here's what was planned last week.......

1.  Osso Buoco, mashed Potatoes
2.  Leftovers
3.  Leftovers
4.  Leftovers
5.  Leftovers or Take-Out or Fend for Yourself
6.  Leftovers or Take-Out or Fend for Yourself
7.  Leftovers or Take-Out or Fend for Yourself

And this is what actually happened--

1.  Osso Buoco, mashed Potatoes
2.  A big Salad
3.  Leftover Meatloaf, Yellow Squash and Onions
4.  I had a burger and salad, Hubs had leftover Spaghetti and balls
5.  Grilled Quebec Chicken, Green Beans w/confetti peppers
6.  Chinese take-out
7.  Leftover Chinese take-out

Everything went as planned I guess.

Last week I made 6 trips to 5 different food stores and spent $191.43 OOP on $312.70 worth of reg. retail groceries.

I had 0 transactions at Rite-Aid last week....again.

$191.43 spent of my $? May food budget.  That's 2/3 of my April budget spent in 1 week or so.
Yikes!

Leftovers going into this week are---taco filling, macaroni salad, lemon chicken w/zucchini, rice, green beans and some veggies leftover from the osso buco and mashed potatoes.
A bit of leftovers and lots of groceries bought last week so I don't need much(if anything)at the stores this week.

Here is the plan for this week.........

1.  Leftover Lemon Chicken w/Zucchini and Rice
2.  Leftover Taco Salad
3.  Kielbasa or Hot Dogs, homemade Boston Baked Beans(maybe), leftover veggies and macaroni salad
4.  Chicken Parm, Tomato and Cuke Salad(use up some produce)
5.  Ravioli,  Sauté of Squash and Onions
6.  Fend For Yourself
7.  Pizza?

3 new meals and 2 leftover meals, 1 FFY day and maybe a take-out pizza(paired with whatever leftover veggies we have)on Saturday when we get home with College Boy and all his crap.

Since I want to have Chicken Parm this week I'll make enough homemade sauce to do another sauce/Italian meal, using up 2 small bags of ravioli that have been lurking in the freezer(and we'll have leftover ravioli then for Hubs to eat over the weekend).

While I have not gone paleo I have been cutting down on the amount of carbs I serve.   When we have a side that calls for rice or noodles I only have 1 spoonful(if any) and am trying to cut down on the bread I use/or make it "healthier".
When I am making a protein or veggie dish that has carbs(like chicken parm has breading and cheese)I don't serve a carb/starch dish as well.  The BBBeans will be a lower sugar version so I can have my fiber/protein w/out too many "bad" carbs.
It's all about making better choices and adapting what your family likes to eat.  If I stopped serving pasta altogether Hubs would divorce me.  The man can't live without pasta. lolz

What I need to buy for this menu....... nothing at all.

Not cleared to drive yet(plus I am dizzy)but I need to go out on Wednesday for an Rx refill so I hope to be better by then so I may go to see if I can find any meat discount deals then.

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten that week?

Any great deals on food at your stores this week?

May Net Worth

Just a quickie because staring at a computer screen with one good eye and one "I need glasses to see" eye makes me dizzy and using one eye only is tiring.

New Worth calculations have been done for May 1st.
The non-retirement monies are up $6,005.48 and the retirement monies are up $5,359.38 from April 1st for a grand total gain of $11,264.76 last month.
And we are up $98,945.54 from May 1st 2014.

Yay!

Now back to the recliner and closing both my eyes.....
