$28K Savings Challenge.....February Update

Every year I keep a close eye on our monthly expenses and our monthly income.
Our income is mainly the salary my Hubs draws from his job.  We have money taken off each paycheck from the top to put into savings, before we even get our hands on it.  This money that's taken goes into various pots....life insurance, health insurance premiums, long term care insurance premiums, investments and retirement savings.  It's automatic so we are never tempted to NOT put it into savings or these other categories.

Once the automatic savings amounts, plus taxes and medical/dental/vision premiums are taken out, it leaves what we get to "live on".  From this amount we budget for bills, both monthly and irregular bills(semi-annual, annual etc.) and our variable bills(like food, eating out, clothing  etc.)  Anything left over once our monthly expenses are paid, I put aside into an interest bearing Savings Challenge account.

For 2015 I am continuing my Yearly Savings Challenge.  I am raising the Goal amount slightly to $28,000 this year, $4K more than my goal for last year.

On to the February report.....

I have posted my February End of Month $28K $AVING$ CHALLENGE Totals.
Check out the Savings Challenge page tab at the top of the blog for the specific numbers HERE.

I have 2 goals each month.....
The 1st is to actually finish each month in the black and not the red.
The 2nd is to hit the targeted savings amount of $2,333.33.

I have to report that we finished up February.
The extra amount we ended the month of  February with?.......$3,423.09

Income

We had $3285.23 left over from our income after our monthly expenses were deducted.

Other monies received in February totaled $137.86.  This included interest made on non-retirement accounts and a couple of mail-in rebates for products I bought last year.

This brought us to our gain of $3,423.09
Since we have no debt, this goes into savings.

Outgo
As for the expenses this Febuary, here are the good and the bad side of things....

HERE are the GOOD THINGS

*  Phone charges, internet and  were approximately the same as last month.
*  Water bill went down $10.20 from January's bill.
*  Credit Card bill went down $1,240.98 from January's bill.  I think it helped not to have a $1K car repair on it like in January.  lol
*  Gas charge card went down $33.94 from January's bill.
*  Cash withdrawals went down $300 from January's withdrawals.

HERE are the BAD THINGS
.
*  The electric bill was up $23.14 over January's bill due to more heating.  Actually maybe this should be under GOOD Things since only used $23.14 more in energy in the middle of Winter is a "win".
*  We had some irregular spending too in February--we paid 6 months of car insurance and 6 months of garbage pick-up(I usually pay the garbage bill in 3 month chunks but we had the money now so why not pay ahead until July?).

The Food Budget costs for February are in another post, which is located HERE.  I spent more than I wanted to but it was still less than what was spent in January on food.

The 2015 TOTAL.....
With 2 months accounted for, our Savings Challenge Grand Total for 2015 is $4,898.26.
That averages a bit more so far than we need each month to reach our $28K goal so we are ahead of schedule for the year slightly.

THOUGHTS going forward into March----

We didn't make our $2,333.33 goal for Jan. but were able to make it for February with a bit to spare.

Irregular bills coming in March, after a glance at last March's bills, include our local real estate taxes.  Actually they aren't "due" until June 1st but I get a whole $26.97 discount for paying them before April 1st. ;-)  I know it's not much but why pay $26.97 more in June if you have the cash in March?  Spend a lifetime paying ahead for a small discount and over the course of your bill paying life it does add up.  8-)
We will also have the sewage bill to pay(I pay it once a year) and will be cutting a check for the state when I file the PA taxes(we always owe a bit, this year about $50).
Hopefully to offset the irregular/added expenses will be a modest federal tax refund.  The filing has been received and the money should be deposited into our account within 3 weeks(unless I screwed it up again this year(I always do-damn you Education Credits!)then it will be a week or so later.

With 2 months behind us we have $4,898.26 down and $23,101.74 left to save in 20015.
Let's just eat this elephant one bite(month)at a time and not worry about the whole pachyderm for the time being.  ;-)

So how was your February financially?

Did you spend less than the income you had in February?
Did you stay within your budget or not?
What did you do with any money leftover at the end of the month?
Did you pay off any debts or put extra toward your mortgage principle or into savings in an emergency fund or a retirement account?
Or did you blow it on something you wanted?

If you posted your financial progress on your own blog, leave a link in the comments so we can go check out your progress too and celebrate with you or commiserate with you!

My Low Spend Shopping Week

So I had $4 in +Up Rewards to spend/roll before Thursday at Rite-Aid and a $10 Catalina to use at Weis by today.
So I went out this morning before the next snowstorm hits here.

First to Rite-Aid......

4 x Garnier hair products on sale $3.33=$13.32
Then I used a bunch of rain checks I always forget about--
1 x cotton balls(rain check)=$0.00

1 x ear buds(rain check)=$0.00
1 x Vaseline lotion(rain check)=$.99

But my receipt after using $4 in +Up Rewards said I owed .21¢ NOT .61¢.
I didn't buy the ice cube choice at first and tried to use my $4 in +Ups but the last $2 one wouldn't go through.
So I added that and the register said I owed .21¢.
I've double checked the receipt and no extra discounts or Load2Card Qs came off so I am at a loss for the discrepancy.
Unless some extra tax attached because of the ear buds(which are taxed in PA)but then disappeared when she used the rain check.
As the King of Siam in the "King and I" would say, "Is a puzzlement!"  ;-)

Anyway I used my $4 in +Ups and paid .21¢ OOP.
$41.19 in regular retail of products brought home.
I received a $3 +Up Rewards for spending $12 on Garnier, which means I spent down the +Ups by $1.
I am good to go until next Tuesday with my +Up Rewards so I'll go back before the middle of next week, when it's a much better week for deals at Rite-Aid.

Then I went up to Weis(PMITA)Markets to spend my $10 oyno Catalina Q......

Total OOP today--.48¢
Total of products brought home--$62.64(plus $3 in new +Ups)

Now I am off to dig into some more genealogy.

This Week on the Dining Table

The "I Am SOOOOO Over This" Edition ........

We got another 5 inches over the last 24 hours.  This isn't boding well for March. bleh.

Here's what was planned last week.......

1.  Beef Taco Salad
2.  Salmon, grilled asparagus, yellow squash casserole
3.  Ham & Bean Soup/Asparagus Leek Soup, Bread
4.  Pumpkin Ravioli w/Sauce, Salad(use leftover Alfredo sauce)
5.  Leftovers(Chicken w/Zuke, rice)
6.  Leftovers(Chicken Fajitas or Beef tacos)
7.  Leftovers(Chicken Stir-fry)

And this is what actually happened--

1.  Beef Taco Salad
2.  Salmon, grilled asparagus, yellow squash casserole
3.  Ham & Bean Soup/Asparagus Leek Soup, Bread
4.  Pumpkin Ravioli w/Sauce, Salad(use leftover Alfredo sauce)
5.  Leftovers(Chicken w/Zuke, rice)
6.  Leftovers(Chicken Fajitas or Beef tacos)
7.  Leftovers(Chicken Stir-fry)

Everything went as planned for some reason I can't fathom why! lolz
Well except I didn't make the squash casserole so that moves to the coming week.

Last week I made 2 trips to grocery stores(but am holding back 1 trip's spending until March) and I spent  $7.74 OOP on $13.96 worth of reg. retail groceries.  I had 2 transactions at Rite-Aid(but am holding back on 1 done after I closed out the books on Feb.)and spend $.23 OOP on $14.87 worth of toiletries, so $7.97 total spending last week.

My spending for February on food/toiletries was posted on Sunday so go have a look if interested.

Leftovers going into this week are asparagus/leek soup and ham/bean soup.

Here is the plan for this week.........

1.  Beef Stroganoff, rice, veggie
2.  Salmon, Squash casserole
3.  Pasta with meat sauce, salad or soup
4.  Pork filet or Country Fried Steak(diners choice), Steak fries, leftover squash casserole
5.  Pizza, Salad
6.  Leftovers or Soup & fresh bread
7.  Ginger garlic duck & veggie stir-fry, rice

What I need to buy for this menu......not a thing.  The meat for the stroganoff is cubes of beef roast that we didn't eat for Christmas and has been sitting in the freezer.  The duck breasts are from that great deal at Wegman's a year ago December that are still lurking in the freezer too.
The ready made pizza is from the Snack +Ups Promo from Rite-Aid at the end of Jan. before the Super Bowl that we didn't eat yet.  It's taking up valuable real estate in the freezer so it's getting used NOW!
The salmon, pork filets and the ground beef for the pasta sauce I bought last week when it was super cheap with instant discount stickers on the packages.  I also bought the 2 bags of fresh stir-fry veggies last week on discount too that are being eaten with the duck breasts.
Unless there is an awesome deal I won't be shopping this week except too use the last of my $10 Catalinas I earned the week before last.

What is getting fixed and served at your house this week?

Was last week's plan successful, did you go off plan or did you not even plan what was going to be eaten that week?

Any great deals on food at your stores this week?

Sunday, March 1, 2015

Well I Lied!

Because the weather was nice and sunny though frigid, Hubs and I went out for a bit yesterday.

I had $5 to spend at Kohl's.
I ended up spending a bit more to use that $5 but it was a clearance find or two(or three).

Then we had lunch.....

Of course I used a coupon.  ;-)

Then it was off to the local craft brewery.....

Hey, that looks good, I'll have one of those!

Hubs got an IPA, then a small flight of 3 samples and a Growler fill before we left to go home.
I had considered stopping in at KMart to check out the Winter clothing clearance deals but we decided to head home instead after using my gas points to fill my car's gas tank.

Oh, and the first stop when we headed out was to Rite-Aid.
You see, I had a $1 off coupon for a brand of hand cream Hubs likes.  After coupon and 20% wellness discount I'd still have to spend down the +Up Rewards about $5.  So I also bought some tubes of Cerave lotion.......

1 x Working Hands 20% off=$5.83
2 x Cerave lotion BOGO50%=$7.93
SubTotal......$13.76

Coupons Used
1 x $1/1 Working Hands ManuQ=$1.00
1 x $7/2 Cerave porducts ManuQ=$7.00
Coupon Total......$8.00

$13.76-$8.00=$5.76 + .41¢ tax=$6.17

I used $5 in +Up Rewards and paid $1.17 on a gift card I need to use up.
I received back a $3 +Up Reward for buying the Cerave items(They cost me .93¢ after coupon but I got back $3 so that was a moneymaker item and helped cover a bit of the cost of the Working Hands cream.)

Since I've closed out the books for February on Friday night I'll put this trip on March's food/toiletries budget.

Today it started snowing way earlier than they forecast so I've been inside doing book work, genealogy, DNA, and binge re-watching Downton Abbey in between popping outside to do a little shoveling.

Yes, just another thrilling weekend here in the armpit of PA.  ;-)

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....
I was on target for a $250 monthly spending until Weis had that $10 oyno Catalina Deal.  Let's just say we are STUFFED to the gills with bacon, coffee, turkey breasts and ground beef now. 8-)
If it's any consolation(and it isn't much)I DID spend less this February than in 2014.

Perhaps spending so little monthly on food for a household is unrealistic given what we eat normally.
We won't give up meat/seafood or dairy here(though we have been eating very little dairy the last 2 years)to keep our food spending super low.  If we just ate veggies, bread and carbs I am sure we could get off spending less every single month.
And it seems that the cost of food rises(or the size of packages shrinks)each and every month after the last.

The monthly savings percentage went down by 13.79% in February to 60.30% compared to January's 74.09% average.
I'm not too concern by that since a 60.30% savings rate is still higher than normal(normal for me is about 40%).
The savings rate for the year so far now stands at 68.24%.  That's quite high all things considered.

LOOKING AHEAD To MARCH.........

I want to continue to eat down some of our stockpiles of food and empty out the freezer a bit more. It's just 2 adults for March except that College Boy will be home for a week this month too.  He is the Wild Card in this.   I didn't get anywhere near a $250 spending month for February so I am upping the budget a bit to $300 for food/toiletries in March.  I shouldn't have to buy anything until about a week in. Let's see how close I can get to that $300 mark without exceeding it(IF I don't exceed it).

If you have other ideas or guidelines you follow please leave a comment and share yours with us all.

*  How much did you spend on food/toiletries in February?
*  Do you track your yearly food spending?
*  What was your savings percentage buying on sale and/or with coupons vs. buying at regular retail price last month, if you track that sort of thing?
