  2. I am in need a cheering up as I have not seen you in over a year! That is way too long.

  3. We plan to do our usual gathering on my dad’s side of the family. I’ve been doing Thanksgiving this way all of my 46 years. We gather now at my aunt’s small country church and eat and visit. We sing a couple of hymns as well.

    ReplyDelete
  4. We’re avoiding family this year. My brother in law is a sheriff and they have two girls in college. My mother in law lives around the corner so we’ll probably stop by and say hello from outside. Dexter would be happy with all the boxes since they contain his hair bands. 😁

  5. Usually we go to my brother in laws house for an extended family get together on Thanksgiving, However, it has been cancelled this year. Normally we have around 20 people. In addition to our pot luck dinner, we have a family photo contest. There are 5 categories: people, places, animals, nature, and travel. The photos are submitted ahead of the get together. My brother in law puts together a slide show of all the photos. The group votes by ballet for their favorite in each category. Winners are given a prize and everyone gets a calendar of the photos for Christmas. Sad, we won't be doing the contest either this year. So, my husband and I will have a quiet Thanksgiving at our house.

  6. Thanksgiving? The family isn't coming home so I will be cooking for my wonderful friends!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. We normally stay home but my friend who is one of the only people I see, will be joining us for turkey, masked potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and probably green beans. The saddest part is my daughter won't be coming home for Christmas this year from Washington - we decided since they are spiking and we are spiking it would not be a good idea to fly.....so I'm bummed, but better safe than anything!!

  9. My son and family moved in the house next door to us. My DIL is looking forward to cooking the dinner and so am I.

  10. Our tentative plan is to have a Thanksgiving Gathering with family, but I gotta tell you I'm not holding my breath. Our Covid numbers are going crazy in TN, and I could see us having to call it off. Safety first, but it sure would be nice to visit. Thanks for the giveaways!

  11. `We are suppose to go to DS#1 house for dinner. There are 24 of us . Our state has just ask for know large groups in home. Not sure what we will do with this. Menu will be normal Thanksgiving food, turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, winter squash, cranberry sauce, stuffing. Then apple and pumpking pies. We may split into two groups and do half at my house to be a little more careful with Covid babsgamtt@gmail.com

  12. For the first time, it will be just Tommy and me. There are no church dinners and if there were, we would not go. Well, if we did, we would wear masks, not eat, and take our meal home. And, even though I have friends where we could go and visit and eat, we will not go.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Sluggy. We do Thanksgiving every year. This year it will just be the 4 of us at home. Almost everyone else comes from out of state so we decided to do it virtually instead. We will still make a full Thanksgiving dinner, just smaller amounts.

    ReplyDelete
  14. We still aren't completely sure of our Thanksgiving plans. It's usually about 16 people at my families and then anywhere from 20 up at the in-laws. Everyone is still planning on having it, with the older generation it is more of a not wanting to miss out on any time with the people they love because they could logically go at any time at their age and the younger generation just doesn't take it seriously. Nothing really set in stone yet for us.

  15. How nice of you to have 3 give away boxes! Thank-you !!! We were supposed to travel to our daughter's. It's looking like it will be the two of us at home though ) :

  16. I have no plans for Thanksgiving. I plan on sleeping in, watching parades and knitting. No special cooking either. It's a day off for me after starting a new job.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Normally we do the extended family Thanksgiving with about 70 folks. This year I am not going since several of my cousins are going wherever they want to go and go maskless! Maybe next year.
If it I just TheHub and I here for Thanksgiving we have already decided we will have turkey sandwiches, chip and lots of goodies. Then we will lounge around and watch football or Christmas movies

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks for the chance to win a great box!
There will be the four of us here for Thanksgiving plus mil, I think.
    Menu
Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, cheesy taters, fried apples, green bean casserole, rolls, pumpkin pie. I may add sweet taters or corn pudding.

  20. You have gathered a wonderful assortment of goodies for your give away boxes. You are a very generous woman.

As the years have passed we do smaller & smaller Thanksgiving celebrations. This year we may just skip entirely! On Monday the 23 I am having my second cataract surgery. I also happens to be our wedding anniversary! We will not be gathering with friends or family.

We don't actually care for Turkey very much. I might roast a chicken. In years past we had 30 + people for Tacos on Thanksgiving. This solved a lot of problems that are presented with our crew. We have people who are gluten free and others who are vegetarian. Mexican food allows everyone to eat together without dietary issues.

Hopefully future holidays will allow us to see our family. Until then we will use facetime calls.

  21. entry for Nov 15
I am cooking a turkey Sunday or Monday and will freeze most of it for Thanksgiving and other meals later. I have never made a sweet potato casserole for Thanksgiving, just mashed sweet potatoes.

We will have turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, sweet potato casserole, green beans, pumpkin pie.

I might make deviled eggs and a jello salad for me, but Tommy won't eat those.

    ReplyDelete
  22. OOH... three boxes, you are going wild! Yes, the holiday will be very different. We will only have a meal with the four of us who live here. I will miss the extended family and friends, but we want to be as safe as possible. Corn casserole is one of my favorite side dishes, YUM!

    Gravy
    Mashed Potatoes
    Sweet Potato Casserole
    Green Bean Casserole
    Cranberry Sauce
    Apple Pie

  27. We're not huge turkey fans, so we will most likely be making steak, mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, cranberry sauce (for the potatoes) & pie. We will likely do a pumpkin pie, although I have lime curd that a friend made, so may also try a key lime tart.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great giveaway. This years Thanksgiving will look the same as last year's. Just my small family and my dad and brother. Not much will feel different from last year since it was also a somber, intimate celebration as my mom passed away less than a month before Thanksgiving. Hoping in the coming years, things will become more festive and back to normal as life goes on.

  29. Just the two of us for Thanksgiving. We plan on having prime rib and baked potatoes with a side of our home canned strawberry/cranberry relish.

  30. Last year we brined our turkey and it was soooo moist.. so that is our plan again this year.
    Bonnie S.

  31. Just sticking to the four of us and my parents this year! It will still be yummy though!

  32. I'm cooking and we'll be five unless MIL decides she should stay home. Daughter is getting tested and will mask whem home from college and vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am assuming The Macy's Day Parade is cancelled. We are very sad about that. Has anyone heard anything about it?

    ReplyDelete
  34. We will be having our Thanksgiving with my parents and siblings as they have been part of our bubble recently. At least that is the plan. If anyone is showing symptoms of being sick that will change. I am supposed to cook the turkey this year!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I usually make the turkey and all the trimmings and take it to my dad's house. I don't know what we will do this year, my dad is 94 and we don't want him to get sick.

    ReplyDelete
  36. We normally attend a big family gathering, but will most likely have Thanksgiving dinner at home with just our immediate family.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You have me thinking of Thanksgivings past. My parents were from the south (Arkansas) so we had cornbread dressing and candied yams. I am sweet potato fan but not candied and certainly not with gooey marshmallows! I have attempted cornbread dressing but it never has been as good as my Mom's. Speaking of cornbread. In my family cornbread is savory.....NO Sugar. That being said, I do occasionally use one of those store bought sweet cornbread mixes. My husband enjoys the sweet version.

How about you? Is cornbread savory or sweet?

  38. My favorite pie for Thanksgiving and for Christmas is pumpkin. There were five kids in the family, so Mama made each of us a pie with our initial scratched in it when it was hot. She said she was tired of the bickering about who ate all the pie or got the most. We love pumpkin pie. The bickering did not happen on Thanksgiving, just the days after as pie became scarce...lol. My favorite cake is chocolate pound cake. A little lemon curd on the slice works for me. We never had that at home. It is my own tradition.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My favorite pie is probably either Sugar Cream or Black Raspberry. I am pretty sure neither of those will make an appearance at Thanksgiving. My Latino family like my Pineapple Upside Down cake so that will probably be the featured dessert.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This year we will be going to my mom's the weekend before and celebrating then. I am hoping the real day will be a quiet one at home.

  43. I will spend Thanksgiving with my son and grandsons. It is the same as usual for us. I don't do much cooking or baking anymore so my plan for Thanksgiving will be a Patti Labelle Sweet Potato pie for dessert. There will also be loads of cookies too! dkayhartwick@gmail.com

  44. Sluggy, as usual you are amazingly generous.

This year's Thanksgiving will be low key. I've been on home quarantine since the week before Halloween. I was exposed and the day I was supposed to be cleared, I tested positive. My father has been on a ventilator and he passed away on Veteran's Day. It is now just myself, little sister and my oldest sister with special needs. We decided that for the first time ever we will not cook the traditional meal. I will splurge and pick up three plates for us. We will watch a holiday movie and maybe play a game of our sister's choosing. We are hoping to be closer to traditional at Christmas.

  45. Thanksgiving will include a menu of turkey, stuffing cranberry salad, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, broccoli salad, rolls and apple pie for dessert. I am also making pumpkin bars.

  46. I tried to post and it didn’t go through-my iPad is not working right. Sluggy, you are incredibly generous! Not sure yet what is going to happen with Thanksgiving, but might be very very low key. That’s ok.

  47. We are having Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes and rolls!! (Thanks, Ibotta!!)

  48. We're vegetarian so we experiment with different mains every year. I'm not sure what main we'll have this year, but we'll definitely have mashed potatoes, broccoli casserole, corn, dinner rolls, and apple crisp!

  49. Nov. 17
My mother made two special cakes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. One was pineapple upside down cake. It was baked in an iron skillet. The other was a white cake with Seven Minute Frosting. She grated fresh coconut, put the juice in the cake batter. The cake was a vision with freshly-grated coconut all over it. It was between the three or four layers of cake and frosting between layers. She specifically made this because she loved it and remembered her own mother making it. But, we all loved it too.

  50. I mentioned earlier that we don't really care for turkey but I assure you it is not for lack of trying. I have baked, smoked, fried, bought an electric roaster and roasted one in one of those huge rectangular things. One year we even cut the turkey into pieces and grilled it!

We do like the day-after Turkey Soup!

I do make a wonderful turkey gravy. I always made the gravy several days ahead of Thanksgivings.

PS That roaster was used twice. It is under the bed in one of the spare rooms. I'm going to get that darn thing out and put it on Craig's list!

  51. Looking forward to the days off (school secretary) and relaxing. Plan to make pumpkin cheesecake to share with elderly family.

  52. It will be a small Thanksgiving for us - The core four in our circle plus my DIL's mom who NEVER leaves her house! This will actually be the first time she's left her house/yard since May! Dinner has become gluten free over the last few years due to allergies so I've shifted my recipes to accommodate everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I forgot something from my extensive menu - mushroom or brown gravy. I’ll have to buy some mushrooms or brown it is. Dave hates both so it’s all mine.

    Jen G.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I really really love stuffing - home made stuffed in the turkey. However, I haven't actually put the effort into making it in quite a while. We'll just have to see what I feel like next Wednesday.....

    ReplyDelete
  55. My nephew and his girlfriend live with me. We are cooking the meal and bringing it to my 93 yr old uncle. I am all about the cranberry sauce. Use to visit the bogs in Cape cod but have not seen them in years. Gerry T. Merlinsfamily@outlook.com

  56. I'm already looking forward to the pumpkin pie. That just makes it feel like Thanksgiving, though sometimes I eat so much of the meal I can't handle dessert. Thanks!

  57. Think I'll venture out tomorrow and pick up a turkey breast for the crockpot. Making the usual sides potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole and corn.

    ReplyDelete
  58. November 18
This 11 lb turkey will be the death of me. I always bought just a boneless turkey breast since it was only me eating it. Those were years I spent with friends but wanted leftovers at my house. Anyway, I think I will revert to my breast only decision. This is too heavy for me to handle. I can always use chicken legs and thighs for giblet gravy.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Looking forward to the pies: pumpkin, pecan, and apple. We have turkey, cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, mashing potatoes, and sweet potatoes. We watch Thanksgiving TV episodes all day. We like to stay home and keep it small.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don’t like pie crust but I do like pumpkin pie filling. Luckily the husband and dog enjoy my leftover crust.

    Jen G.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like all the traditional Thanksgiving foods....and it’s my favorite holiday because there’s nothing commercial about it. I love that.

    ReplyDelete
  62. First Thanksgiving with the ex actually out of the house-it will be different but hopefully more peaceful and relaxed. Looks like I am going to be cooking the 20 pound turkey and all the fixings! I enjoy your blog so much :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just noticed a new holiday roast in the Fresh Thyme ad. I need to go there for a few other things so may try that instead of the usual pot pie.

  64. Staying home and having a simple quiet thanksgiving. One son working. The other who is a chef helping with the cooking. Me and my husband and his mom. Leftovers will go home partly to the "boys" to eat up. We will keep our favorite stuff. lol

  65. We had plans to get together for Thanksgiving with friends, but with the recent spikes I think we're just going to do a quiet holiday with our family only.

  66. November 20
Well, I was three minutes late to get an entry in for the 19th. On Thursday night, I baked the turkey. So, the prep has begun.

    ReplyDelete
  67. This year I am thankful for the peace that has surrounded me. I have been through a divorce and a cancer scare this year (along with all the COVID drama) and I think I have come out a better person. Looking forward to what the future brings!

    ReplyDelete
  68. We’ll probably do a FaceTime call with my husband’s family. My family is old school so that will be a regular call. My mother plans to skip out on crazy family using the virus as an excuse.

    Jen G.

    ReplyDelete
  69. My oldest sister( special needs), was disappointed that we planned to pick up plates instead of cook. Sooo, I will cook a Turkey breast, a few sides and sister will make her famous deviled eggs as she has traditionally done every year. I'll also deliver a few plates for my needy and shut in hospice patients. I have three houses that won't have Thanksgiving. It all works out in the end and dad would have been pleased.

  70. Can't wait to visit family and have pumpkin pie! Thanks. --Angie O.

    ReplyDelete
  71. 100% my favorite is broccoli dressing casserole. I could eat that and mashed potatoes and nothing else and be perfectly happy.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have two little pie pumpkins that were on sale for $1. I’m off all week so maybe I’ll do something with them. I’ve roasted seeds before but never baked a pumpkin.

    Jen G.

  73. My mother in law has gone back and forth about coming to Thanksgiving or if she has "better plans" Now she texted she wants to bring a friend. I told my husband you need to call her and tell her I am not comfortable with a stranger in our home with all that is going on especially with my compromised immune system. I don't know how careful this person is in their life. I told him she is welcome to take a plate to her friend when she leaves. I have brand new containers just for options to give away to someone. But I am sure I will be the bad guy. Family -sometimes you don't know exactly what they are thinking!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yesterday I tried something new and added Semi sweet chocolate chips to my pumpkin bread and will definitely be doing it agin!
    Bonnie S.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Think I'll break with tradition and make a pineapple upside down cake instead of pumpkin pie this year. I might try to find a small box of Walker's individual mincemeat tarts since I'm the only one who enjoys mincemeat pie.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Husband has to work, so headed to my moms for Thanksgiving. Keeping it small this year!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I really enjoy reading the responses to this post. My oldest sister is special needs. She and I have enjoyed reading the responses from different households. Each post has sparked stories from past holidays in our family. We've had a great time with everyone's post. We plan to spend the holiday reviewing memories. Thank you Sluggy and thank you everyone who shated your holiday comments.

  78. I tried leaving a comment at the butt crack of dawn but I don’t think it went through. I’ve been up at 3 am for the last week for no apparent reason. The gist of it was the holiday roast looked gross. It was flavored with cranberries and filled with a wild rice “stuffing.” Real stuffing should be made with bread.

  79. Had a little “pre-Thanksgiving” dinner with Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and the rest with friends yesterday, because the weather was nice. We sat outside and it was fine. They had a heater and I had a winter coat just in case, but it was ok without. This is the year for trying new things!

    ReplyDelete
  80. If everyone stays well, we hope to gather with family. Everyone brings something, so it isn't too much on anyone. I'm to bring dressing, Pineapple Delight, sweet/unsweet tea. Thanks! --Angie O.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Starting to get things ready for Thanksgiving. Buying a pecan pie this year instead of making it.

    Michelle F

  82. I am plugging away, cooking one dish each day. Maybe by Thanksgiving I will have a full meal. I may add crowder peas and coleslaw if my energy holds out.

  84. Change of plans. I picked up a Tofurkey ham roast for Thanksgiving so I made the pot pie yesterday.

I also bought a red plaid union suit at Aldi. It’s kind of funny looking but feels festive.

  85. So much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. My son is doing really well, all of my kids are healthy and employed, and a negative result of a breast biopsy!

  86. Today, starts the prep for Thanksgiving. First, no new cooking unless Turkey Day related. All leftovers in fridge must be eaten. The fridge will be cleaned out Tuesday night and I will make cornbread for dressing. Wednesday, my little sister and I will make the dressing. My older sister will make the deviled eggs. Early Thursday, I will put the turkey breast in a baking bag and cook. While the Turkey is cooking, I'll finish the sides. We will prepare a few take out plates and I will deliver to 3 houses. We will then sit down and enjoy our meal.

  92. Finishing up my first semester of law school and friends are all far away - so I treated myself to a dinner from a local restaurant - being delivered - and I will open up my Zoom line all day for friends to "drop in" and say hi. Making it work. ---Suzanne

  93. Thanksgiving will be just the 4 of us for dinner, however, we are planning a drive by to see Hubby's mother (who is 100) and staying at his sister's. Dinner will be the traditionals (Daughter wouldn't have it any other way and Son keeps telling "Mom, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Turkey, green bean casserole, stuffing, dinner rolls, stuffing, and definitely pumpkin pie with whipped cream for dessert. Hubby carves the bird by cutting half the breast off and we freeze it for later on, so we don't get sick of turkey in the first week. We hope everyone has a happy, safe, thankful and healthy Thanksgiving. With love and prayer from our house to yours. :)
