  2. Hi Sluggy, I can applesauce and all our jams- apple butter, blackberry, peach, etc. I need to learn to use a canner- but I am "scerd." I have way too much tomato sauce taking up valuable real estate in my freezer! Angela

    1. I read that alot about folks being scared? Why?....is it just learning the process or is it the potential for botulism? Water bath canning is so easy! And the food poisoning think?...very easy to know when your canned goods go bad without even opening them.lol
Tomatoes and jams are the easiest things to can IMHO. I found it helps if you can find someone who cans and help them, sort of on-the-job-training. 8-)

  3. Those J & J soap buddies bars are great for adults if you have a hand strength issue. Easy to hold on to.

I got as far as buying some canning jars this year. Then we got hit with the record high temps, drought and water restriction, Japanese beetles, ants and skunks. My garden did not survive. Will try again next year.

    1. Marci, I didn't think of that about the soap buddies! I'm forever dropping the soap in the shower and having a devil of a time finding and picking it up(my mobility and eyesight issues w/out glasses). Maybe I should break open one for myself.lol

My garden is a crapshoot every. single. year. Last 2 years?...no tomatoes-one yr due to late blight, the other due to flooding. This year?....lots of tomatoes but the collards are a bust.
      It's always something, right?

  5. I have not done any canning by myself but growing up was forced to help at home. :) We canned Tomatoes, tomato Juice and Pickles. My Mom always did the water bath canning also. I have never done any with the pressure cooker. I would love to get back to do thing but don't have a lot of storage at our current house. Love reading your blog.

  7. I grew up eating almost exclusively home-canned foods and had to help my mom do the canning each summer...usually on some of the hottest days of the years, since that is when everything suddenly ripened and needed to be dealt with!

After getting married I did some pressure canning, mostly beans and carrots and corn. I haven't canned fruits or vegetables in many years, but want to start again. I have my mom's pressure canner but need to have the gauge checked for accuracy before trusting it.

I do make jams. I've made raspberry, peach, blueberry, strawberry, and LOTS of blackberry. I currently have about 40 pounds of blackberries in the freezer which I've picked over the summer and also have mashed mangoes and plums in the freezer, waiting for a good sale on sugar :-)

  8. Oh...I forgot that I have recently made orange marmalade for the first time and it was wonderful! We never had orange marmalade when I was growing up. I don't ever remember my mom making it, so I was well into my 20's before I ate it. I definitely will be making it again! Yummm :-)

  10. I had a neighbor when I was a kid who canned veggies and also made candy from orange and lemon rinds! Also hung her laundry on a clothes line! What a huge influence she was in my life!
