It's hard to empathize with statistics and battles but put a human face on it and it's easier to get involved in a story.slugmamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12728856166374248591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1611711622146875201.post-74461632285953389182013-07-04T01:08:04.606-04:002013-07-04T01:08:04.606-04:00Some of what I am finding IS fascinating.....if yo...Some of what I am finding IS fascinating.....if you wade through enough of the boring parts. lolslugmamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12728856166374248591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1611711622146875201.post-83730467045963739552013-07-04T01:07:23.687-04:002013-07-04T01:07:23.687-04:00Yah, the "good old days" always seem so ...Yah, the "good old days" always seem so much more pleasant with hindsight. After all, the Founding Fathers founded this country as a republic, a confederate of states, each with it's own rights to govern. There was a balance of powers with the central government having some and each state also having powers over their own destinies, with the states holding slightly more of that power. Lincoln and the federalists changed all that. The country that was set up in 1776 is nowhere near what it has become today.

As for John Lee's wife....Ellen Lawson Holt. She married John in 1859 at the age of 22. When he left home, she was 24, the mother of a 16 mo. old son and more than 6 months pregnant with their daughter. She became a widow at 26. She is found with her 2 children, living back with her parents in the 1870 census, then living with her widowed mother and 2 children in 1880. Her son died in 1891 at 31 yrs. old and never married. By 1900 she is living with her married daughter and her family. She applied for a widow's pension in 1888 from the state of VA which she was granted.
She died at age 85 in 1922, having never remarried.slugmamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12728856166374248591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1611711622146875201.post-9936160188174638852013-07-03T23:46:14.615-04:002013-07-03T23:46:14.615-04:00War of Northern Aggression? I agree that we should have less government intervention but letting states withdraw at will crosses that line, in my opinion.

Leaving at 32 with a toddler at home and a baby on the way must have been so hard. They seem to need a few history lessons about the "good old days."444https://www.blogger.com/profile/18317761558076527630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1611711622146875201.post-67814531602977802992013-07-03T18:17:37.995-04:002013-07-03T18:17:37.995-04:00Your family history is absolutely fascinating!!!Your family history is absolutely fascinating!!!Lenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16064081200654561079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1611711622146875201.post-58021377809910374682013-07-03T14:12:50.913-04:002013-07-03T14:12:50.913-04:00Very interesting to see one vein alone of history ...Very interesting to see one vein alone of history instead of a string of battles involving hundreds and hundreds of men, and even more hundreds of families affected. Sad story, but interesting nonetheless. Taniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11075300256482920618noreply@blogger.com
