I have posted January's totals on the Total Grocery Savings Page located HERE and have updated the Totals there.

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....
I did well in spending below my usual $400 per month on food/toiletries.  I would have liked to have stayed under $100 but I'll take under $150. 8-)

The monthly food spending savings percentage went UP by 5.26% in January 2020 to 78.98% compared to the December 2019 rate of 73.72% savings average.   The fact that a larger percentage of my spending was at Rite-Aid(where I don't actually spend money)vs. grocery/other stores in January gave us such a larger savings percentage from December.

With 1 month accounted for, I have spent a Year-To-Date Total of $149.73 on food/toiletries in 2019.

2019 Yearly Grand Total Spent....................$149.73
2019 Yearly Grand Total Value of Items....$712.41
2019 Grand Total Saved...............................$562.68
2019 Yearly Savings Total............78.98%

The average per month amount spent is $149.73 in 2020.

LOOKING AHEAD To February 2020.............I am going to try to keep the grocery spending low again in February but on the other hand, there will be little Rite-Aid shopping to boost my savings percentage this month as I spend down the Bonus Cash.
I am shooting for a $200 spend this month and a savings percentage in the 40-50% range.

If you have other ideas or guidelines you follow please leave a comment and share yours with us all.

*  How much did you spend on food/toiletries in January?

*  Do you track your yearly food spending?

*  What was your savings percentage buying on sale and/or with coupons vs. buying at regular retail price last month, if you track that sort of thing?

*  What are your methods for keeping your food spending in check?

Is anyone out there up for tracking expenditures and trying to spend less but still eat well?

  1. Wow, I would love to achieve those numbers, food is so bloody expensive in Canada. If I didn't scrimp like I do my budget would be twice what it is. I did manage to come in $28 under budget this month, likely due in part to all the treats/stuffed fridge from Christmas. My fridge/freezer and pantry are full though going into February and it is a shorter month, one can hope, right?

  2. I talked with Tommy last night about recording what we spend. I am not motivated when i have to sit on couch and record things. Besides, with the light in here, it is a pain to readjust my eyes as i look at receipts and record information. So, he will be the recorder as i call out the information. I will have categories, not just what we spend but how it is spent.

  3. Your tracking skills are amazing! I find using grocery store apps to help estimate and maximize savings help. I only go grocery shipping once per week. I purchase my household supplies only once per month as needed.

  4. I've tracked our expenses by category monthly since 2000 so I will continue with you. January saw our total expense food in/out at just 46% of our 2019 average.

I'm being careful to truly use what I buy. That is a challenge this week as I bought up a lot of veg for guests last week, and there was no snacking away as there has been in the past. We'll try our hardest to eat not waste.

In October our neighbor gifted us about 15# of beef in a variety of cuts. We still have 2 packages left.

2w ago I bought 2 large organic chickens. Hubby smoked them. We had 2 dinners on those and shredded the rest which is enough for another 8 meals total. I have 10c of wonderful rich chicken broth in the freezer too. So those 2 chickens really stretched their $23 cost.

I get organic free-range eggs for $2/dozen from a RN I used to work with....she continues to provide them even though I've retired. This saves me $2.65/dozen.

I buy our organic veggies at Costco-best price and we rarely have waste when we're eating home regularly. Hubby is good about taking leftovers to work for lunch.

I look forward to learning new ways from others!

    1. Well done!! I too try to eat organically as well, but it is expensive. Eggs are my main source of protein, so I alway buy the 18 count organic pasture raised. I can make that last for two weeks. Organic meat is not in my budget, but organic beans, and veggies are.

  5. January was a new norming month and I was just off. We exceeded my target by over $100 and I sort of just gave up. Fresh month though.
