Turkey Day Approacheth

Ok so I gave Hubs 3 things I need him to do before company comes for Thanksgiving--
*1*  Fix the 2 spots on the ceiling in the Dining Room
*2*  Hang the thermal curtains in the Living Room
*3*  Clean the DR and LR floors

He's known this since like November 10th.
So guess who waits until this week to do them?
Yep.
Hubs.

So currently there is a ladder, spackle, paint, patching mesh, tools and sandpaper in my dining room.  And item 2 and 3 haven't been addressed yet either.
sigh

With my HS and various other ailments(plus being old now)I have to pace myself when it comes to the Holidays.  All the cooking prep can be mind boggling and wear me out in quick order so I need to spread it out over multiple days.

I guess lots of other bloggers are off seeing to Turkey Day details as well(or traveling early as storms are due for most of the country later this week)since not many are posting much this week.

Here's my Turkey Day menu--

* a pickle, cheese, cracker and crudité plate(appetizer)
* turkey
* cornbread and sausage stuffing
* mashed potatoes
* roasted carrots
* green beans
* yeast rolls
* cranberry "glop"
* gravy and au jus(those who don't want gravy)
* pumpkin pie(whipped cream optional)
* cherry cheesecake pie
* coffee and tea

Here's my schedule to get all this on the table on Thursday--

Sunday
Begin thawing turkey
Take out frozen green beans and sausage rolls

Monday
Gather pantry goods(canned pumpkin, evaporated milk, stuffing mix, "glop", graham cracker pie crusts for cheesecake pie, turkey stock, etc.)

Tuesday
Make cornbread for stuffing
Cook sausage, onions, celery for stuffing

Wednesday
Assemble stuffing
Bake pumpkin pies
Assemble cheesecake pies and chill them
Put "glop" in fridge to chill
Make roll dough
Set table and get crock pots/serving bowls/utensils out

Thursday
Cut out rolls and proof 6 am
Get turkey stuffed and in the oven by 8 am
Get rest of stuffing in crock pot and start heating it
While turkey cooks--
Assemble crudité plate
Cook potatoes and mash them(put in crock pot to keep warm)
Assemble green bean dish put in oven 20 min. before turkey comes out
Prepare carrots put in oven 20 min. before turkey comes out
Turkey out of oven to rest, rolls go in oven
Carve turkey and ring the dinner bell to "come and get it!"

Hopefully I get it all cooked and serveable at the same time.

And squeeze in a trip to Rite-Aid at 8 am on Thursday too.   For that I am all ready to go with my written transactions and coupons.  8)))

What are you up to today?

Sluggy

  1. Well, we are SUPPOSED to drive to Lake Tahoe to have dinner with family but it looks like the weather isn't going to cooperate so.....I picked up 2 turkeys at 47 cents/lb last week, hopefully it will thaw in time but if not, DH gets a honey baked ham from work so we will have that with mashed potatoes, rolls, and Brussels sprouts. The turkey will get made over the weekend because I HAVE to have my turkey and stuffing sandwiches :)

  2. A+ for being organized!! I too am on a schedule to get every item either prepped or done so that the big TDAY isn't a nervous breakdown situation. Am decorated and the table is ready. I may be simultaneously cooking along with you ;-)

  3. I'm working a bit later as I then need to head across town to meet my daughter at her roommates. they car pooled and it was so nice to only ave a 30 minute drive, and then we'll be home about 35 minutes after that. I'm going to stop and get the remaining groceries I need, plus food for our next 12-18 hours being snowed in.

  5. My youngest is arriving home tonight. My oldest, her fiance and dog are arriving tomorrow night. Everyone else is coming on Thursday. I still have to clean the upstairs bathroom. I will vacuum Thursday morning again because you know, 2 dogs. Cooking will start tomorrow and go all day Thursday and then Leftovers into Friday. The kids are going back on Sunday morning so I will take a well deserved nap Sunday afternoon if Hubby can be quiet during the football game. Have a delicious Thanksgiving.

  6. I, too, have a schedule. Today, is making Stovetop Stuffing and baking a dozen sweet potatoes. I am old and tired, hence Stovetop! Yesterday, I made Jello with fruit and Green bean casserole. Wednesday, I put Hen in oven and Tommy takes it all off the bone for me. I think I will buy gravy and chop boiled eggs into it tomorrow. I am tired already.

  7. I’m going to mom’s for Thanksgiving, but hosting Xmas. I’m going to sit down and write out a timeline to alleviate stress, ha.

  8. Perhaps your hubs works best under severe deadline? lol. Happy Thanksgiving - ask for help from your family if they need it (with cattle prod if necessary)

  10. Wow, that's a lot of work. Homemade rolls even? You go above and beyond. I hope there are many hands to help clean up after the big dinner.

  11. Your menu sounds delicious, Sluggy. I need to bake a cake today, but so far am not feeling it for some reason. I too have to plan accordingly and cook all week just to have the energy to do what I need to do for the big day. I hope you and your family have a blessed one.

  12. At least he didn’t decide to fix the ceiling after he cleaned the floor and curtains. That stuff can be messy...ask my husband how I know. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Sluggy! JoAnn

  13. I am addressing letters from Santa today before I start the Thanksgiving prep. I think I have about 50 more to go and then I will begin to get my ducks in a row for the meal. I am not even sure yet what we are having. I do have a turkey thawed, and some sweet potatoes cooked and mashed. Other than that who knows?

  14. Your menu and plan look terrific. If you are old, I must be ancient. Take some time for yourself too.

    I just baked an apple pie and now my pumpkin is in the oven. Except to vacuum, I don't have to do another thing until the morning. But I might make the stuffing tonight and refrigerate it. Then put it in the turkey tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Sluggy!

  15. Sorry but I had to laugh Sluggy. I really do think that kind of procrastination is a male genetic trait! Good luck though!

  16. I only work under pressure so plan to do everything tomorrow morning. Thought about prepping but work was crazy until I left today. So drinking some wine right now and I’ll think about it tomorrow. (Scarlett had the right idea! 😁)
