Doggy Love

I an quickly turning into a crazy chihuahua mama here.

I have been trawling around to find a cute long haired female chihuahua for a couple of months now.
I wanted to stud him out a few times, which would earn him a few bucks and maybe get me a pick of the litter.  I'd keep one puppy(female)and then have Chester fixed so he wouldn't breed with his daughter.
But I am having a very hard time finding anyone in this area who wants a Chihuahua stud for their bitch.

So then I thought I'd like to get another Chihuahua, breed Chester with a cute bitch with some sort of registration(akc, aca, ckc, etc.)....maybe a few times, keeping some pups, selling some pups and then having the dogs/pups I keep all fixed.
Sort of making my own little herd of  Chihuahuas.
I know there are costs associated with having(a herd)of dogs and they would certainly keep us from traveling, but the love you get back would be worth the costs.

Am I crazy?

  1. Yes, but if it makes you happy, you don't need permission. If I remember correctly, you were looking forward to retirement and traveling. Why the change in focus? You could travel and still visit pet stores to get your furry fix.

  2. There is a lot to consider when having a lot of pets and vet bills is probably first on the list. Second is the travel issue. We haven't been away on a family vacation, (all 3 of us) in probably 6 years because I don't trust anyone to care for my pets the way I do. And the cost of having someone take care of them can be high. That being said, if I knew I never wanted to go anywhere ever again, lol, I would become a foster parent for dogs, (or puppies) until they could find forever homes. Yes, it's crazy. Sometimes I wish I had a farm. Not sure my neighbors or the POA would appreciate me having a bunch of dogs, but if I could, I would.

  4. Yes, traveling and my furniture is the reason why I won't get a cat after mine was put to sleep. You finally get to do what you want.

  5. No one loves dogs more than I do, but your post kind of made my heart hurt. I'm going to be very outspoken here and tell you our shelters are FULL of chihuahuas. I believe all the chihuahua love came from the Taco Bell dog years ago, but it's absolutely heartbreaking to see so many needing homes and knowing that not all of them will get a new home.

    1. As much as pup still is a barker, I live him to pieces. We did now get him fixed-no puppies ever again as all kids would be gone and we like/want to travel. If we ever got another pet, shelter adoption would be how we add to the family.

  6. Only because you asked...Chester is very cute but the ASPCA reports 670,000 dogs in animal shelters are euthanized per year. It doesn't seem like there is a need for more dog breeding. Many chihuahuas from California are flown to Seattle shelters for hopefully a better chance for adoption. On my trip back from Hawaii, 7 shelter dogs were flown to Seattle (Alaska Airlines flies them free on your ticket) to a dog rescue in hopes of having a better chance of adoption. For dog lovers there are many ways to help homeless dogs.

  7. I am a dog lover and love Shelby, the dog, but she does cause some issues when we travel. Of course you could always buy you a class a ,b or c rv and travel with the tribe!

  8. As much as I love dogs, we won't be getting any more after the two we have pass away. Aside from the on-going expense, you lose a lot of freedom. Have you given any thought to perhaps fostering some other dogs?

  9. As long as you can care for any dogs that won't get adopted. Then I say go for it. Our dogs are part of our family. I would love to add another one.

  10. I just saw on a post from city we live in they rescued 38 rat terriers from a boarding situation and it makes me want to go get 2 of them. We have 2 chi's now we rescued. I am a big fan of the terriers now after loving a couple.

  11. I agree with jeanie. We have a no-kill shelter, here. But, since we’re such a small town, everyone and their brother adopts. We have ‘lost’ animals all the time because they’re not taken care of properly. Many, many times, animals are turned back in to be adopted again. We used to volunteer at our shelter. It really does break your heart.

  12. I think the verdict is "no, it's not a good idea". However, the choice is up to you.

  13. It would be cheaper to adopt a pal for him. And it might come potty trained too - huge bonus!

  14. Are you crazy? That boat sailed a long time ago my friend and I was paddling with you...(in a circle)
