Here are my FOOD BUDGET spending totals for MAY 2012.

I have posted May's totals on the right side bar under Total Grocery Savings for 2012 and updated the Yearly Totals.
I am listing subtotals for each store I purchased from in May.  If you aren't interested in that much detail, just skip to the bottom for the Totals Summary.

My spending includes Food, Toiletries/HBA, Pet Supplies, Cleaning Products, Paper Goods & tax where applicable. We are a family of 5(3-6 at home this month)& 2 dogs. No kids under 16.

Cash will go immediately into the Budget kitty, while Gift Cards will be calculated in when spent.

THOUGHTS & COMMENTS for this month.....

I went into May with $400 budgeted for food/toiletries for the month.  I was able to stay well below my budgeted amount, even with more kids home and more mouths to feed.
Of course, by not actively couponing and doing the drugstore deals, my savings percentage didn't come anywhere near to the 70 or 80% I can pull out of my ass when I try hard.

I used very few coupons again in May. My 40%ish savings was mostly just buying what was on sale and/or buying meat with store discount stickers on them.  Ok, I have a few Catalinas I used too.  I spent almost NO TIME working up scenarios or ways to devise more savings on my shopping trips.  This debunks all those naysayers who think you have to spend lots of time fooling with(fooling=clipping, getting, organizing)coupons in order to save substantial money at the grocery store.  Just buying on sale and stocking up at lowest price in the sales cycle can reap you significant savings.  And buying on sale/lowest price only requires you to keep track of the week to week selling price of goods.  Not a big time hog in my book.  ;-)

LOOKING AHEAD TO JUNE.....

I will be keeping my food budget at $400 for June.  I just don't know what is going on yet this month.  This week we have family coming to stay.  2 weeks hence #2 Son leaves for camp and I'm not sure when he is returning.....could be the end of June, could be end of July.  I'm not planning on any stock ups but you never know with me. lol
I don't feel like I'll "need" all $400 but I've got it there just in case....but I don't plan to use it all.

How did you do in May with your Food Budget?

  1. As a single Mom, I use to clip coupons until I realized all my son and I were eating was "fake" food. Not to mention the Sunday afternoons spent clipping and planning.

Lucky for me, my husband and son are not gourmet eaters, so dinners are easy. I budget $400 for the three of us but never come close, so I am thinking about buying some organic stuff and see has that goes. I too, buy only on sale, shop the farmers market and over all try to buy locally. I have started buying ice cream every week as that is our big treat and I do not feel bad about it one bit.

Cooking from scratch has been the biggest money saver for us, actually me as I no longer feel I need to "portion" everything out to make it last.

    blessings, jilly

  2. I am glad you can debunk the naysayers. I have a wealthy friend who is going broke any day. She and husband own two business and grown son owns a third. She tells me she does not have time to coupon, that she works too long and hard....with cleaning woman, yard man, and employees who are around to carry things at their house...lol.

The way she always says she does not have time is a putdown to me, as though my not working is why I can "play" with coupons. Psrdon me, but she would not have a successful business if husband had not inherited it. Okay, maybe she would.

She spends enough time complaining about her hard life (millionaires) to clip coupons.

I was wishing I could do as well as you, when it dawned on me you have more oop to spend than I have to spend. Plus, you are buying for many more people. You just plain need more of everything.

I probably save 50%, but I cannot do the big deals you do, plus I don't buy the products that make those deals possible.

    Good job!

  3. Hmmm.. What did I do over my May food budget... ? Probably cry.
I've realized just this morning that if my MIL didn't live here, I'd live more with a "Make do" attitude. No paper towels in the house? No big! We've got tea towels! No rice? No prob! Tons of various noodles in the cupboard. MAKE DO! Mix them! But I have to stay on top of things or she'll go out of her way to "help". Her kind of helping is a massive over dose of inferior products and things we don't need at all.

wow... sorry. Can you tell it's been a rough weekend? And it didn't help that I watched Hoarders before I woke up...

  4. You always do so good. I've got $200 a week. $100 for gas and $100 for food. Some weeks I use excess to cover the other. It works better for me.
I don't know what is going on with me anymore but I just can't get the lead out of my butt to coupon. If there is something that is 100% free from CVS I'll run over and get it but most times I can't be bothered. I have also been driving to Aldi a lot and shopping. It's the cheapest around. It just take 15 minutes to get there is traffic is good. But I did find out that we will be getting our own very soon!
