It's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades at Rite-Aid & Mass Confusion

I forgot to use my Free Item Lay's Chips Qs from the Facebook promo(was that last month?), so it was back to Rite-Aid on Friday while the Lay's Chips are on sale BOGO.....

2 x FREE SBCoffee drink ManuQ=$2.38
Coupon Total....$24.36

$24.63-$24.36=.27¢ OOP to put on my gift card.

But that's not what happened.
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth(by the cashier)and two, count 'em two managers putting their heads together over this(price modifying an item at a reg. sale price to free with a raincheck went ok but price modifying an item that was on sale AND was free after raincheck put the cashier into a tailspin, thus 2 additional people playing with the register), here is what my transaction looked like.....

4 x Lay's Chips BOGO sale=$7.98
1 x Renpure Shampoo(raincheck)=$0.00
1 x Renpure Shampoo(raincheck)=$5.83!!! --suppose to be $0.00
5 x R-A TP(raincheck from Mar?)=$0.00
1 x Colgate Toothpaste(raincheck)=$.99
1 x R-A Ginger Ale w/wellness discount=$.80
1 x R-A Raisins w/wellness discount=$1.35--suppose to be $1.00
1 x Foster Grant kid's sunglasses=$0.00--suppose to be full price $7.99, says raincheck?
1 x StyleScience kid's sunglasses=$6.39--suppose to be 50% off $3.49
2 x Seattle's Best Coffee drink w/wellness discount @$1.19=$2.38
SubTotal....$25.72--suppose to be $24.63

Coupons of $24.32(they took .04¢ off one of my free Lay's Qs because the register showed I would have been NEGATIVE .04¢ if they put it in for the full $3.99 value)

$25.72-$24.32=$0.00
Honest to Gosh my register receipt says TOTAL....$.00.
And I didn't even use a single +Up nor whip out my gift card.

HUH??? LOLOL

I know it doesn't add up correctly and I've been over the numbers line by line about 20 times, but the receipt shows a $.00 Total.

I think the problem started when the cashier started one of the Renpure Shampoos and had a problem/called the manager over but when they figured out what to do, she rang up a different item and made one of the sunglassess free instead(when it should have been $6 something)and then I just got a wellness discount on the Renpure instead of getting it free.
After the first laborious 28 minute transaction, I wasn't about to make them redo it for a .27¢ difference.
I'm sure Rite-Aid will get that additional .27¢ outta me in the future. ;-)

So, I paid $0.00 OOP and I received $5 in +Up Rewards back(WYB 2 Sunglasses).
If you have need of kid sunglasses, go watch the AdPerks/VV videos for the $5 off Foster Grants and the $5 off StyleScience sunglasses.  The sunglasses are BOGO50% until Saturday evening.  Your kid sunglasses will run you approx. $11.50 with the sale.  Deduct $10 in Qs for a total of around $1.50.  Use $1.50 in +Ups and you'll get a $5 +Up Rewards so it's about a $3.50 +Ups moneymaker.

HERE'S A NEWBIE COUPONING TIP--If you have a FREE ITEM Q, wait until a BOGO sale to use it.  This will get you 2 items free for your Free Item Q instead of 1.  (Especially now since you can NOT use a BOGO Q with a BOGO sale at Rite-Aid to get 2 items free.)  By doing this I made my 2 free chip coupons stretch to 4 free bags!

  1. I am not a newbie but you make me feel so inept with all your "razzle, dazzle, watch the total go to zero" talk. Okay, I had a coupon for a free item. It went to BOGO in a few weeks. I took the coupon and two items to the register along with other purchases. The cashier would not give me 2 free. She said she would get fired.

I tried to explain it to her. She told me I was buying nothing and the ad for the grocery said, BO. Finally, she called someone over cashiers who talked to me like I was three- or maybe two-years-old. She then got quite defensive, saying, "You are not purchasing when you use a coupon! We are giving that to you!" Me--"No, you are not giving it to me." I am paying you with a coupon. Won't the store be able to get money from someone plus money for handling?"

We started over about six times with the same conversation. Each time she got angrier and used smaller words when talking to me. Finally, she became very angry and said, "I am not going to argue with you any longer. You just don't understand. The store will just give you the first one and the GO even though you did not BO." She practically threw the money at me. She raised her voice. I smiled as I tried to explain.

It was a lost cause. But, every chance I get, I still use the BOGO at that store. What irked me was that a few days later, I bought something with a coupon and one clerk said to another, "What is she doing, trying to get stuff free again?" All the cashiers and some customers turned to look! All the cashiers were very cool after that, and examined and re-examined each simple coupon and sale paper, just distrusting acting.

  2. Parctical--First off what store was it? Was it a chain with a stated coupon policy? Many store now won't allow a BOGOQ with a BOGO sale. Rite-Aid use to but no longer does.
It's sad how employees are allowed to treat customers sometimes. Would a letter or face to face visit with the Manager or District Manager help things?
If I get grief from a cashier when I KNOW the store's policy and the cashier is wrong I don't continue to argue with them as it gets me nowhere. After 1 go around, I'll ask to speak with the manager instead. Or if things get ugly I'm all for just saying "forget it" and leaving the whole lot on the order on the belt and walking out. But always with a smile.lol
And the best way to handle whatever happens is to develop a thick skin and not care what anyone thinks or says to you.
    HTH....

  3. Oh, I have thick skin, just really annoys me. Yes, I was mortified at first. But, after that, I just related my tale to each cashier...lol. They are all so eager to know what happens...lol. This was about two or three years ago. There was no policy forbidding it. I don't even think there is a policy now forbidding it. The only coupon policy that is posted is no more than four coupons alike. It is a chain. I did keep asking for the manager when I was talking to the second person. She said she knew what she was doing and just explained me to death. I am not deliberately going to antagonize clerks...no use and they can make life hell or pleasant. It's funny that some of them understand or at least never question coupons. Others get really antsy and almost destroy the coupon trying to figure out what to do, turning it over and over...weird. Oh, I do leave, saying, "Never mind." Thanks for the suggestions. I did call the district manager who agreed that what I was doing was not trying to pull a fast one. I would not tell them which store or when it happened. Most cashiers are nice about coupon deals, get excited and want to know where I get some of the free ones, especially the free cases of Cokes from mycokerewards. Thanks!

  4. Practial--I know what you mean. Sometimes ya have to vent tho, right?lol
Me?...I have no luck at my local Target store, so I stopped shopping there altogether. Every time I'd get some cashier who made up their own rules.
Plus Target didn't put out a coupon policy in writing back then. Walmart was the same way with no coupon policy in writing tho I never had the problems at Wmart that I had with Target cashiers.
So basically now I just avoid both but I will venture into Wmart for something awesome or if I get a gift card. Target can do suck it.lol
